I've been having some issues with the kindle file utility. I keep have the error "the system cannot find the file specified" this error pops up with virtually everything i try to do, even when i try to install the drivers. Any idea whats going on? I saw in the main forum for the kindle fire utility that a few other people had the same issue, but no one had responded to them.

I guess you are trying to run the "install_drivers.bat" script in the drivers subdirectory. Just move it one level higher (where the run.bat is) and it should work.

The "install_drivers.bat" utility is kinda hackish - it tries to run both 64-bit and 32-bit devcon utility hoping one of them suceeds. The other one always throws error (AFAIK).
Btw. I had to manually install Windows drivers for Kindle Fire. Just open the Device Manager and check if there is a yellow exclamation mark beside the "Kindle" device. If it is there, click "Update driver" in the context menu and point the wizard to the drivers subdirectory of Kindle Fire Utility - it should install the drivers and the device in the listing should be called "Kindle Fire ADB Interface" or something like that.
It does show up as that in device manager for me, but the utility still doesn't work

Check your home directory to make sure .android\adb_usb.ini exists. If not, copy it to there from the drivers directory of the utility package.
I have the adb_usb.ini file in my .android folder already and I've even downloaded the Google USB drivers from the SDK but W7 x64 still says it can't find the specified file when I choose Update Driver from the Device Manager, i.e. Amazon device still has a yellow exclamation mark. Any ideas?

I would like if someone could give me the drivers for the Kindle Fire. I've tried the drivers packaged with Kindle Fire Utility but they don't work with XP for some reason. Help would be greatly appreciated.

These are the drivers I used on XP. Unzip, open up, click on install(make sure it put adb_usb in your avd(or something like that) folder inside the .android folder(C:/documents and settings/User Name.) Then right click on my computer, properties, hardware, device manager. Find the Kindle with an "!". If you don't see it, look under Android Phone, and if you see "android composite device" or something like that and uninstall it. Then look under disk drives and uninstall the Kindle Fire or whatever its named. Then close device manager and my computer properties. Then open up device manager again and find the Kindle with an "!". Update the drivers with the Kindle Fire Driver folder(link at top). If you get something about Google(maybe googlewinusb) and if you see something about 4.0.0 select the first one. When you get a message about CoIninstaler or something, choose the files in the i386 folder, not the amd64. Now you should be able to root.

My girl got a Kindle Fire and wants Jelly Bean on it. I plug it into the laptop, Windows start to look for drivers, can't find them. So, thru KFU I install the drivers, open KFU, device is not showing. I open adb, run adb devices, blank. Run adb usb devices,, device not found.
The kindle will say that its connected to the computer and I can transfer files. But windows will not show an external device is attached. So, I go to Device Manager, its an "unknown device". So I looked through post after post, finding out that I need to edit the adb_usb.ini file. Problem is, I can't get to it......
I'm not a noob when it comes to computers or android, but this has me lost......

I had same problem. Errore was plug first kindle then install kfu with drivers. Remove all drivers you installed. Now install drivers provided with kfu. Make sure SDK and java is ok. Then plug kindle.

smsrat84 - when you plug KF into USB and Windows starts to scream about new unrecognized device, choose an option to install drivers manually from a specified location, and choose {KFU_HOME}/drivers/kindle - KFU will see it after that. Then install FFF, TWRP with KFU and so forth.
Try using Linux (yes I said the dreaded 'L' word ) because apparently it's not as fiddly with drivers as Windows is.
Personally, I used Mac and it was plain sailing all the way. No drivers, everything just worked first time [Just make sure you're careful, nothing is foolproof ]

Try this;
Download the Android SDK and unzip it and copy the 'adt-bundle-windows' folder to your documents folder
Navigate to Documents/adt-bundle-windows/sdk/tools and run the android app - this opens the android SDK manager.
Go to tools - Manage-addon-sites and select the User defined Sites tab. Click new and add the following url
http://kindle-sdk.s3.amazonaws.com/addon.xml
Hit OK and close
Now scroll to the bottom on the SDK manager and under extras will be 2 kindle fire options 'kindle fire device definitions' and 'kindle fire USB driver' select both and install.
Now close the SDK manager.
If you have previously used your kindle on your PC, plug it in and go to device manager and un-install the drivers for it - now unplug it.
Navigate to \Documents\adt-bundle-windows\sdk\extras\amazon\kindle_fire_usb_driver and install the kindle USB drivers
Now add the location of the ADB.exe file to your path

I downloaded the SDK and it didn't have a 'adt bundle' in the contents but i ran sdk manager and I had already added the link you mentioned and I also had already added the extras you mentioned earlier from a article I read and Nothing so I stumbled across this article and it had a few extra steps so I thought to give it a try only problem is, When I go to my device manager to uninstall the kindle drivers i don't have that option to uninstall a 'kindle' driver rite below it there's a android adb interface and i have the option there to uninstall but before I did so I wanted to post here what's going on with me. I wonder if it worked for the person who started the post?

Are you using the adb from the latest sdk?
I couldn't get adb to recognise my kf2 until I used the latest adb.exe
I rooted my both kindle´s before a week.
no idea why the other driver did not work.
The Driver from http://kindle-sdk.s3.amazonaws.com/addon.xml work perfectly.
I had this same issue until I updated the driver with the latest. I don't have it in front of me, but when I looked at it, it's dated approx Dec 8th 2012 in Device Manager. Update the driver to the latest and you should be good to go.
know that if you install the drivers after connect your kindle it can mess it up, if you go into device manager and uninstall the drivers after you've disconnected you're kindle and install them then reconnect it, it should work.

Powerpoint is so right here, If you use any linux distribution, it's going to be much easier to get your kindle connected to adb.

That must have been my problem. I ended up moving to my Xubuntu machine to get it to work. I think my adb was from November,

This probly isnt the right place for this but I have been to so many areas and so many websites that I am crosseyed now. I managed to root my kindle the other day and was attempting to install a mod on it. At this point I cant even remember which site I was on to share the steps I took. Needless to say, I messed up and now the kindle boots to to the logo for a few seconds, shuts off and boots back to the logo, over and over. I'm not very good at all this but not completely stupid either. I'm simply ready to pull my hair out. I have installed Android SDK and am having trouble getting the correct drivers for my kindle apparently. Its a kindle fire hd 2012. I went through all the trouble of installing the sdk and got to the part with the addons and manually putting in the amazon site, only to read on and discover its no longer supported so I can not get the different kindle fire definitions. In my device manager, it shows kindle fire and expanded shows Android ADB Interface (no composite.. does it matter?). I have verified that abd is installed and working, but doing a devices command, doesnt show any devices. It executes without errors, just doesnt list anything. I have a fastboot cable and it does currently say Fastboot on the kindle when I plug it in.. thats all it says tho, is it supposed to go any further then those words?
I have tried so many suggestions on here to get it to see my kindle to no avail. I follow tutorials, that seem to link to other tutorials because the previous ones had prerequisites and THOSE have links for downloads that no longer work and so I do a side load of a webpage trying to find the missing download I need and THOSE pages end up leading me somewhere else or going a different route then the previous tutorial took me and I just CAN'T get anywhere with this! It shouldnt be this hard (and I'm venting at this point so I apologize). FIRST OFF STOP USING KFU UNLESS YOU ARE SURE IT'S A KF1 WHICH YOU PROBABLY WOULDN'T HAVE RECIEVED TODAY.
1) was the box black or brown
(black)=kf2
(brown)=kf1
uninstall the drivers from device manager, unplug kindle, install drivers from kfu, plug in kindle, profit

Not trying to be difficult but I suggest you keep reading until it becomes more clear.
ESPECIALLY if you are "new to all this".. just try to read as much as you can in all of the KF2 threads.
PS. It sounds like the drivers are installed.. either check device manager or test with "adb devices"

I don't have windows 8, but you may have to turn off driver signature verification.
I've already turned off signed drivers. And ADB is enabled on my Kindle, if that matters.
I uninstalled the Kindle drivers with the Kindle unplugged, then installed the KFU drivers, then plugged in my Kindle. It says it's using the MPT USB driver. I tried to update the driver software, clicked "browse my computer for driver software," clicked "browse," found the folder containing the .inf file. It said my software is up to date. I tried again, hit "have drive" instead, found the .inf file, it said the folder I specified doesn't contain a compatible file (even though I selected a file, not a folder??)
I ran KFU, tried to root it, it said fastboot uses a different device than ADB.
I don't know where to go from here, this is where I've been stuck for like an entire day. I've looked for ways to change the driver and I can't find anything that works.

What software version do you have?
I'm thinking you will have 10.2.6, which would make it a Kindle Fire 2.
If it is a KF2, I think you would be best following this guide.

You are welcome. Could I suggest that you now run a backup of your current partitions. They would come in useful in case of the device becoming soft bricked.

Thanks for the linky, i grabbed it today and for some reason, it's not detecting my device. I've installed/reinstalled the drivers that came down with v0.9.8, still same results. Shows the driver Android ADB Device
When I run the option 2 to install root & superuser error encountered. We are unable to locate your kindle fire. Fastboot uses a different device than ADB. ck device mgr for Kindle or Amazon (when looking, neither are listed.)
So tried to just boot it to FastBoot and same results, device not found.
So being dummy me, i ran the Run script as admin, now i get the Tools\wget cannot be found. Thought maybe it was a long file name issue, so copied folder to c:\temp\ - still same results.
What am I doing wrong here guys?

Put everything back where it belongs first. Also, your computer recognizes the kindle as an Android adb device in device manager? You are on 6.3.2 also?

I do have it on 1.4.a as well.
I did remove all of the drivers to the point win7 was showing kindle with an !. Reinstalled and rec'd same results. Got pissed at it and removed drivers again rebooted and removed the files under .android. When I get a chance, i'll try reinstall. Maybe by manually deleting the inf file will do some good???. I'll update the post when I have a chance to work on it.

Have you tried running KFU under compatibility for Windows XP SP3? Once you do that, it'll automatically ask for admin privileges.

The one that ichigo said is good.
So I was using the new KFU 9.8+ on my first gen kindle (6.3.2)
and during the procedure while I think it was attempting to install FFF bootloader it was on <waiting for device>, my laptop lost batter life and shut down. Upon booting up my computer and trying KFU again
ADB Status: Offline
Boot Status: Unknown
My kindle now displays the logo. I assume it's bricked right now.
Are there any remedies to fix this?

It is on the orange logo? And it won't boot properly? So the kindle just stays on that screen without getting dim or anything, right?

I know how to delete the .android folder, but how can I be sure that the deleted drivers are the one associated with adb and not with other programs ? are those the drivers in Windows/system32 ?

The .android folder is found under the root of your sdcard or you ext-sd. To remover the drivers:
If you are on Windows 7/8:
Hit the "Start" button on the keyboard, and when the homescreen (Windows 8) or the Start dialogue (Windows 7) pops up, type in "Add or remove".
Hit enter on the highlighted option, which should be "Add or remove programs". (Note: You may have to go into the settings tab if you are running a search on Windows 8)
This will show you a window where all the apps that are currently installed on your computer shows up. (Metro apps don't show up here.) Look through the list until you find your KF drivers. This should be listed as something like this: Kindle Fire Drivers
Highlight the driver and look towards the top of the window. You should see that a "Change/uninstall" button has popped up. Click on that and follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the drivers.
You're done!
If you are on an older version of Windows:
The procedure is the same, only you have to go into Control Panel > Add or remove programs to do this.

I had the Same issue found it was just stuck in Fastboot mode and Windows does not handle it well at all. I was getting a USB device not recognized error and wouldnt let me change the driver for it. To get back booting again I used

Followed the direction and everything was good.... Almost I found no matter what computer I use fastboot always comes up as a bad device. :crying:
But that should help you with the "Brick"
Kindle Fire 6.3.2 successfully rooted

When I run the option 2 to install root & superuser error encountered. We are unable to locate your kindle fire. Fastboot uses a different device than ADB. ck device mgr for Kindle or Amazon (when looking, neither are listed.)
So tried to just boot it to FastBoot and same results, device not found.
So being dummy me, i ran the Run script as admin, now i get the Tools\wget cannot be found. Thought maybe it was a long file name issue, so copied folder to c:\temp\ - still same results.
What am I doing wrong here guys?

I have the same error.
What i did was...
1. Download KFU 0.9.9 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192818)
2. Download TWRP (http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/blaze)
3. Download FFF (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1369405)
4. I rename them as "twrp" and "fff" respectively and place them in the "recovery" folder in KFU
5. I manually install the drivers
6. I check in the device manager to show me "Android Phone - Android Composite ADB interface"
7. I run the KFU
and that was all...
I check the root was complete with the https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5qb2V5a3JpbS5yb290Y2hlY2siXQ..
not visible on my pc.
Hey, I took the first step to root my kf on 6.3.2. I can no longer see the devise on my computer to do anhything else. I only loaded the utility file onto the devise and now what? I can't even delete it. Any thoughts?

*Takes a deeeeep breath* okay, I thought it looked like the most promising instructions I've found so far too... so, from a TOTAL novice at all of this, here goes! Thanks for the endorsement ( I will definately thank him too! )
So, I went through all the steps outlined by xarenmi, but it STILL doesn't recognize my kindle when I try to use the run tool.
I'm not the best with all this, so...

Hey, I finally got the google winusb driver installed (I had to do it via SDK manger) but it still recognizes my kindle as "kindle" under "other devices" in the device manager. Also the KFU will not recognize it.. period. just nothing and I'm getting really fed up.
I have followed all instuctions to the T and I am still having issues.
