Face unlock? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Will the play be getting face unlock via ics or is there a gingerbread version of it anywhere?

Probably yes, the problem is that this feature can be cheated by simply scanning a picture of you on facebook or a paper photograph. Makes the app quite useless in my opinion.

Depends on what you want. If the security is to keep out casual snoopers then it's good. If you keep nuclear secrets on your phone owning an xperia play was probably the wrong choice.
Thankfully for me I don't and I don't hand out free photographs of my face so it's sufficient. Then again I also use the swipe pattern which is even easier to crack then face unlock. Each to their own really.

Also with the poor resolution on the front facing camera it would be pretty hard to unlock your phone in dark places.

I used to have an app that required your face to unlock an app, you need great lighting.

The app was called Visidon App Lock
And you need light lighting or sunlight to get it to reconize anything, so I would assume the ICS Face Unlock feature will be the same.

A way around the picture scanning thing would be to unlock the phone with a stupid expression. As for the light...don't know

The only reason we would not get it is if Sony Ericsson think it may challenge their beloved Arc which has no Front facing camera.

I just downloaded an app called "FaceRecog PhoneLOCK" i will try it out and report back with what i find.
**UPDATE: It seems to work, but you do need pretty good lighting, and if you wear glasses, you will have to take them off, or the app wont be able to find your eyes.**

Idea for a new application

Hey peeps!
I have this new idea for a app that runs on phones with secondary front cams.
Unlock the screen by it doing a face recognition of your face, no need to passcode or pattern lock it...
Hope to see it soon.
If an app like this is alredy available, please post it here, if not - DEVELOP IT AND POST IT HERE!
thats a great idea, the tech already works well enough on laptops so hopefully some bright spark can make it a reality
Would it always have the camera running or only when a button is pressed. I can definitely see this being possible and not too hard to dev.

Exactllly! And still, only noobs like me are seeing seeing this stuff... Some real programmers! Do this!

Camera will wake up as soon as the screen wakes up, and if it sees you, it should unlock.
This is a great idea for an app. Unfortunately, I don't have nearly enough coding skills to pull off facial recognition...
...and I only have skills to successfully use it
It would need something along the lines of Google Goggles recognition software.

Maybe someone can rip off the api's from goggles and make it work offline
Not a bad "concept" but not likely to be done until Gingerbread is used by all the phones.
You see the api to access the ffc on Froyo is very phone specific wich would only make this app run on the Galaxy S (other phones would work also but with a lot of work).
Second problem is how would you unlock your phone when it's complete black (I mean no light at all) would be a very stupid situation to find yourself in isn’t it ?
The sight of my hungover face first thing in the morning is enough to make my phone go to sleep for good lol
Nice idea though, might have an issue with varying light levels though

Taking photos when locked?

Before I got my arc, I had an LG Optimus Seven and with it it was possible to take photos, when the device was locked (screen off).
It was easier to take pictures when I had dirty hands or wearing bandages...
I find it ugly to unlock the device to take photos...!
Hope someone can help or write an tool for this...
Thanks in advance!

hello--i made the exact same move (from optimus 7).
i think the locked mode to camera is a wp7 feature and not available to andriod w/o hacks.
I'd love to be able to take pics, without unlocking the phone. Maybe someone can make an app that opens the camera when long-pressing the camera button and then when you push the back button or turn off the phone, it would go back to being locked. Hope this is possible.

Then someone would request saying that every time the camera switch on by itself in the pocket or handbag . LOL.
Widgetlocker lockscreen. It allows you to make a second lock to whatever you want (so photo if you want )

The button is so small and hard to press, I do not think anyone can experience this...
On my old phone it did not happen either.
The button has also 2 pressure points, to take first the focus and than the picture.
Custom Rom developers grant me this wish!

No clues here brought me to change the arc with the galaxy2.
When I have an phone with a shutter, which is only useful, when in the camera apply and unlocked, I don't really need this anymore.
Sony, you had your chance after the first xperia and you miss it!
The G2 has a lot more power, a Frontcam, much internal storage (apps2sd and then the sd is broken?!) And so on...
With the G2 its possible to activate the camera with the homebutton long pressed and than take photos with the power button.
I thought someone can program this too for the arc, but nobody here seems to be interested in using that small 2 presszones shutterbutton wisely...
That was the reason for me to buy the arc...
All new androids had no camerabuttons!
What was yours?
Sony Fans?
Or do they trick and blend you like me?

[Q] Is there a touch to focus app(camera)?

I have searched.
Anyway, I am just looking for a camera app that has touch to focus. I can't seem to find one on the market. Anything will work really, as long as it doesn't require root or anything in that matter. Is there one?
look on the market for xperia play camera mod, lets you use the L button for focus and R button for taking a picture.
I have that, not exactly what I'm looking for. I want to be able to touch the area I want to be focused. Thanks though

I'd love that option too. My dad's xperia neo can do that, why the hell the play wont?
It's such a nice option and gives a lot more flexibility to compose better pictures.
I know right?
I'll have to keep looking around..
Anyone else?
Please post when/if you find one. I've not encountered one yet and i've tried quite a few camera apps from Market.
Regards Dousan...
Try fast burst camera. There's an icon in app where you have to tap and do manual focusing first before shooting.. Good for sports shots too, this is what i'm using to capture some skateboard tricks of my friends..
I haven't given up yet...still looking.
EDIT: I found one! It's called Camera360 Ultimate(I think the free version will work too).
To enable the Touch to Focus:
Press the settings(the gear) in the upper right hand corner>Favorite Settings Tab>In the first drop down box, select "Press to focus, and click shooting button..."
Yes,camera360 can make it.But it locked some functions until you pay for it or you had use a China Telecommunications operator.....

Just want to make sure, it will focus where you touch right? Because otherwise it'll just be like the [amazing] app that focus with L and shoots with R, which is easier to handle.

Yes, where ever you touch. Just try the free version, if you are unsure.

[Q] How do you activate PIN and that fancy camera picture take on screen lock?

Hi
i know you can get slide unlock to work so that if you slide to the left you can take a picture instant and to the right to unlock
but how do you get that feature with a PIN code or a PATTERN?
You can't. Going to camera directly would bypass the security test so its just not available.
yeah but i was thinking that the camera app would open in a kind of jail and would only allow to fill up your phone with pictures

[Q] Stop Game Pad From Unlocking Screen

Well I have been looking around but havent found this anywhere...is there a way to stop the screen from unlocking when the gamepad slides out. Its getting really annoying when the phone is in my pocket I pull it out and I have 1000 things open. Thanks.
It's funny I have the exact opposite problem. I want it to open up every time i slide out my gamepad.

I feel ya, man. I hate how sliding the pad open unlocks the phone. I have to turn it off if I'm doing something that requires a lot of movement, otherwise I take my PLAY out to find it loaded with about a dozen apps (not exaggerating). Would've been much better as a flip phone, IMHO.

exact same thing that happens to me...was building a cat thing (something like this) for my fiance the other day to find tons of stuff open and lots of settings changed...was not a very nice surprise lol. I agree a flip phone would of been better.

There should be an option to "Launch Xperia Play by sliding phone" or something like that in the Xperia Play Launcher Settings.
You can also install a custom lockscreen from the Play Store that allows Landscape orientation, i.e. WidgetLocker (Not free) or some other one.
Sorry, I don't much about modding system files.
