[Q] microSDcards 32Gb formats to 30Gb and doesn't mount in clockwork recovery - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried this to no avail. Used gparted to partition and format several times.
when using adb, I don't see devices attached, strangely enough. and so expectedely, subsequent commands from above link do not function
when I put the sd card in a pc under linux, I see all the partitions.
when I boot leedroid, card storage is available.
tried a vast amount of hints and solutions, but nothing helped.
During my trials, lost 2gb of sdcard storage...nowhere to find them...
phone is rooted, s-off. a 16GB sd card works like a charm but is getting small
I want to use cm7, as it give me more room for sw. (phone is always full as for many of you!)
best regards,
Olivier

Most people has problem with a class 10 sdcard, 16gb or 32gb class 6 and below, no problem.
I had same problem with 16gb class 10 but not with 16gb class 6.

So my recommendation is to get 16 GB Class 6 SD card from a good manufacturer like A-DATA, Kingston, Lexar or SanDisk. It will be fast enough for all operations.

[Q] SD Card Class Check

I've read many threads about certain apps needing a sd card of class 6.
I am currently using one that came with my HTC desire, which is a 2gb one.
How do i check if my SD card is class 6 or not?
Thanks in advance.
It is usually written on the card you may see a number in a circle. Benchmarking apps can also help, try antutu or sd card tools from the market.

iirc: the stock card is a class 2 card but a fast one (> cheap class 4)
Yep, the stock card is Class 2.

Any advice on which are the best higher class sd cards to purchase, taking into account cost, speed & reliability ?
play.com had a sale on some class 6 8gb cards. i don't know if they still do. i got mine from them.
One of compatible class 10 cards are from A-Data.
I also have class 2 4 GB card, SD tools can't detect the class and selects the "?" radio button. However the read are write speed are 23MB/s and 5.3MB/s. Is this normal?

It depends on the free space on your sdcard...
I have a Lexar 32GB Class 10 and when I have free space of 20GB the read speed is cca 35MB/s and the write sp. is 10MB/s. When a 10GB free space: 25 and 8MB/s.
EDIT: Can somebody confirm that I'm right?
EDIT2: MB/s not GB/s

What MicroSD Classes Work with the Desire...?

My question was concerning my 16gb Class 6 card (which actually appeared to be corrupt/broke'd anyway)
I asked about compatibly with the Desire...

Thank you for contacting us.
In regards to SD Cards
I can help you with that.
The card that you are trying to use is not compatible with the phone as the class is too high speed for the device to be able to keep up with the speed. I have included a link to a webpage with the sd cards that are compatible with that device.
http://www.expansys.com/a.aspx?i=196001
If you look under the accessory tab then down the bottom is compatible memory.
I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required.

I'm sure I read some threads about class 10's working fine in the Desire?
The link seems to suggest only a class 2 or a class 4 will work...
I'm using a class 4 without problems so far.
On a dutch board I read a guy was using a class 6 on Starbust so it should be possible I think.
I've just bought a 16gb class 4 Sandisk and the speed tests show it as being quite a bit faster than my class 4 (non Sandisk) 8gb card!
I'm using class 4, working fine
I'm using a 8GB class 6 card with Custom ROM and A2SD with no problem. Been over 6 months now.
A lot of class 10 cards have issues, class 6 seems to be the most reliable thus far. Some people have had good experiences with A-DATA 16gb class 10.
So from user experience - a good Class 6/10 card should work just fine?

For C6 yes.
For C10 Mostly yes... but usually class 10 is not really faster... so save the money.
Just my two cents.
I'm using Transcend 8GB class 6 without any problem. Try to format by gparted or similiar. Are you using it for any other purpose than storing photos, music or etc? For example for data2sd or apps2sd?
I just bought a transcend 16gb class 6, working perfectly so far with no problems.

I bought a 16gb class 6 to use with data2sd but struggled as the card was broken - so i've sent it back and just have the 8gb class 2 that i got with my phone now - and on stock rom again, so it is just photos and music and froyo app2sd at the moment
basically all branded cards will work fine, the thing you shoud be concerned more onthe capacity you are gonna use. It aint worth buying a 16GB sd when u cant fill even half of it with useful stuff
If speed is your thing then get a class 4 or 6 but I had SD mounted as read only with a class 4 8 gig Kingston SD, so I swooped with a buddy of mine for a class 2 SD from a Nokia n95, no problems since then.

Which to choose Apps2Sd or Data2Sd

Hi,
I have two partition 14 gb Fat32 and 2 gb Ext4 and I want that all installation goes on ext4 (without using internal strorage) so in this case what should I choose Apps2Sd Or Data2Sd?
thanks.
I wouldn't bother with data2sd unless I had a card of class 6 or higher.
I very much agree Class 6+ to get the benefit
Well you would want to choose data2sd, if you want as much to be on the sd-card as possible, however it is usually quite a lot slower than using internal, and there is no reason to leave internal completely empty.
Also you can't run everything from the sd-card. The system-partition will still be on internal as well as boot and so on.

Thank you mortenmhp,
I have sd-card of class 10, will still be a lot slower than internal?
thanks.
I use class 4 and have done from day one with droidzone's roms and it runs great.
I use a class 10 8GB card, and use Apps2sd. Dont really feel the need to use Data2sd.
Ive got alot of apps and still got some memory left so its all cool
Well it might not be too slow, but only do it, if you need the space, in which case it's a good solution.
But the more you move to the slower memory the more time will be spend accessing it.
But I'll encourage you to try it out for your self, as it's very individually(just make a nandroid backup and try different rom solutions) personally with my sd-card there is no way i'd use it for everyday use(flashed it a few times, and always got a slow and lagging system), while other people seem to have it working fine
Ok I will try,
Thank you mortenmhp...
Your question should be which do i need?
People rarely 'need' data2sd - apps2sd is 'usually' enough!

how do you know what class your sd card is?
there is a figure 2 or 4 or 6 or 10 in a circle printed on the sd card or you can install sd tools from market to benckmark it ( 2 means 2 mb/s , 4 means 4 mb/s,... aso )
i'd say go for apps2sd then if you need data go for that after

I now use data2sd with MIUI rom and a class 6 samsung sd card £16 from play.com
I would defo recommend this card, I didn't think from class4 to class6 would be that much difference I was wrong. I can now record videos without a single lag, phone is easy 10x faster and smooth, also MIUI is superb rom
Hi,
Most of the times a class 6 or 10 is much "slower" than a good
class 4 like the sandisk mobile ultra of 4Gb (The one of 8 Gb is slow !!).
The problem is that te typical test of writing/reading to/from a single file doesn't guarantee the behaviour of the card when used intensively.
When many files are involved, things change dramatically and a good memory controller is a must, and many of the class 6 /10
don't have one.

[Q] Whats the best SD card to use with an SD ext partition?

Hi,
Im currently using sebastians rom on my htc desire. Everone says it runs super smooth, but im having huge lags. I thought it was the rom, so i tried cool3ds room, which was said to be smooth aswell. Also with this rom, some huge lags.
Both roms use an sd ext partition to store a part of the rom. It got me thinking, could it be my sd card being too slow? I dont know what kinda sd card i have, since i got no knowledge about sd cards whatsoever.
Could these huge lags be causes by my sd card? If so, what sd card would you guys recommend to buy, for maximum performance?
Thanks in advance!
So we learnt what - that smooth and stable terms should be taken with a grain of salt here.
If you don't don't know what sd card you have, I think it is safe to assume that you have a default Samsung class 2 card, which is too slow for anything. Pull out your card and see what number is inside the small circle written on it.

To sum up my experiences and what I read, I can recommend a Class 6 SD card from A-DATA, Kingston, Lexar or SanDisk.

Youre right, I indeed do have a Samsung class 2 SD card. Could this really be causing the lags in the rom?
It's not that Im allways experiencing lags, sometimes the rom is super smooth and other times it's soooo slow. For example, when I click the settings icon, it takes 3-4 second before it actually enters the settings menu, and when I scroll between my homescreens, it freezes for 1-2 seconds.
Could a class 6 SD card be a solution? Is class 6 the best to use? I saw some class 10 sd cards around, arent they faster than class 6?
I have a class 4 Sandisk 32gb and seems to work fine
Why not just go for a class 10 card? I got myself a Lexar 32GB from Amazon and every Runny rom is super smooth
Class 10 SD cards are not always recognized by the Desire. So to be sure, one should use a Class 4 -6 SD card. Especially Class 6 works well for all 'technologies' (even DATA2SD).
Is there a noticeable difference between class 6 and 10 when using e.g a runnymede rom? If so, which microsd class 10 cards are confirmed working on the htc desire?

Ye I did. But notice erklats comment. He says class 2 sd cards are too slow for anything. Since I got a class 2 sd card, big chance this is causing the occasional lags.

I did not notice any lags with my Class 6 SD card (in AOSP roms). Never heard / read about anyone who had speed problem with a good Class 6 SD card when using Sense roms.
So in theory Class 10 SD card should work more than ever without a lag. But in practice Class 10 SD cards cause some lags. Don't know why, maybe their are too fast (ATTENTION: dangerous superficial knowledge).

Because sd card is only one side of the coin. Then you have your memory controller and if that one doesn't cooperate with class 10 card, congrats on money wasted.

i read that class 10 cards for desire will only perform as class 6 as that's the highest it can handle. samsung is a reliable brand to go for imo, and you can always test the speed or return it if it doesn't perform to standard. to be honest i'm still on class 4, does the job for me.

only you can answer this question the best...how much local storage do you want or use? do you use it for music/video, and have enough to fill it the space?
- if it's comfortably less than 16gb, then go for 16gb
- if it's between 16gb and 32gb, then go for 32gb :good:
or in the long run, 32gb cards aren't that much more expensive nowadays, so you can buy 32gb and then worry less about space
thx for the replies but i was asking if this card is compatible with htc desire? read the desire is picky on sd card brands, etc...
