[Q] Using the GN on AT&T - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi!
Two questions about the GN.
-I currently own an iPhone 4S(on ATT) and I have an unlimited data plan that goes along with it. Will I be able to use this data plan with the GN?
-Will I be able to pop the sim from the 4S(using an adapter) and use the GN right away or will I have problems?
Thanks in advance for the help!

I am sure someone with far more experience than I will post soon but here is what I know. Make sure you get a SGN that is able to work on the AT&T GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA Network.

If you have the GSM unlocked version of the GNex you can just pop the 4s sim card right in without an adapter. I tried using an adapter and it got stuck in the GNex sim card slot. Took me a while to get it out so now I just use my micro sim card with the GNex. I have the unlimited data plan for iPhone too and I have great speeds faster than the iPhone. Go for it.

Make sure you setup the correct APNs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1149523.html

I just switched from the iPhone 4 to GN. Here are some pointers I believe are correct:
- Get an unlocked GSM GNEX
- Get a SIM card adapter (though I have heard of people not using one. and warned of getting SIM stuck in phone...BTW DO NOT put SIM adapter in phone w/o SIM--it will get stuck).
- ATT has you provisioned to HSPA with the iPhone 4, but to have them provision you to to HSPA+ you need to provide them with a new IMEI #. Get someone w a HSPA+ phone (like the iPhone 4s) and ask for their IMEI#. Then call ATT and state you want to add this phone and be provisioned for HSPA+ and keep you unlimited plan. The IMEI # is just there to open the option...using GN's # will not show then the HSPA option. Also, have them reset the voicemail as it get removed when they modify the plan (but I do not use it anymore).
- Look at the APNs on the board. I am using one I found on here noted as "phone" But the link has a few as well. Enter them and do speed tests to see if they work. I got at most over 5MBPS on mine...but it fluxuates.
- For Voicemail, I opted for Google Voice and did not activate ATTs. There is no visual voicemail, but GV sents text or emails. I think I like it better.
Hope this helps. I was hesitate at first, but the transition was smoother than I thought! But be warned, you will be searching for the home button AND anyone sending texts via iMessnger will be sending it to dead space...they need to re-identify you as an SMS.

Install the Google Voice app and you'll get visual voicemail. It even (poorly) transcribes voicemail.

Before you move from the 4S to GN, make sure you turn off iMessage on your 4S before doing anything. I forgot to do this and I wasn't getting texts from my iPhone buddies since my phone number was still being recognized as an iOS 5 user.

Hi! Thank you so much for the help. However, there is one part that I do not understand. (see bold) I already own the 4S so shouldnt I be provisioned to HSPA+ already or am I misunderstanding the whole situation
Thanks again for the help!

Yes you will have HSPA+ already if you have the iPhone 4s. The guy above thought you had an iPhone 4. Should work fine.

If you're switching from the iPhone 4S do you need to add or change any of the apns or will the standard one work fine?

Not too sure....I would assume they would work fine. I have been "Testing" a few APN settings on here and noticed for some I get better speed rates than others. I think the generic cingular APN that pops up does not support HSPA+ speeds.

Anyone go from iPhone 4 to GN on AT&T?

I currently have an iPhone 4 on AT&T in NYC and am thinking about making the jump to the GN. For anyone who has done this, I have a few questions:
- I assume a micro SIM converter will work to allow me to use my AT&T iPhone SIM? Correct?
- Can I still use my unlimited iPhone data plan? or do I have to switch provisions? AND If I can keep it, will I automatically get HSPA+ or will i be locked to HSPA?
- How does Visual Voicemail work for AT&T? Does that need to be re-provisioned?
I really like the Nexus, but having a family plan and loving unlimited data, I am hesitant to jump to VZ.
Finally---what speeds are people seeing in NYC on HSPA+? Seen other locations, just not NY
Thanks!

the wife had Iphone 4, sold it for the Gnex.
-Micro sim converter works fine.
-you need to be previsioned for "4G" HSDPA+. To keep your unlimited data, just borrow someone with a att 4G phone and have att cusomter service grandfather you in.
Speed I am seeing in LA, about 7MBs down, faster than my Inspire.
Thanks! I know a few people with the iPhone 4s!
Question, did the visual voicemail "just work" or was there another call to AT&T for that?

Oh yea FYI - no Visual Voicemail for andriod. you might have to use google voice.
when you make the data change, make sure they add your voicemail back on. when they remove the iphone data plan, they usually remove voicemail.
This might be a stupid newbie question, but how do you know when you get a message if there is no visual voicemail? Is there the icon in the corner?
I have to play around with my google voice account and figure out how to best set it up.
THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP! My phone should arrive tomorrow!
Now to figure out a) best nav software and b) best car dock w audio out (may go with samsung dock)

Visual voicemail shows the voicemail in text. The normal app gives you a notification in the status bar. You just can't tell what it says unless you call and listen

I had the iPhone 4 on AT&T, switched to the GNex and I love it. I don't use a micro sim card adapter as the ones with the cut out will get jammed in your GNex sim card slot and you will have a hard time removing it and will damage the device if you are not careful. So I just use the micro sim as is in the GNex sim card slot, no worries. No visual voicemail like they said above, who cares though. I have unlimited data plan and I am seeing really fast speeds and it is HSPA+. Have fun!
Thanks. The micro SIM adapter was like $2 on Amazon. If it does not fit right, I will try it with nothing (didn't know that would work).
I may try the Google Voice Voicemail. Then I would get the VM icon and the Text/email alert.
Now to just a) get the iPhone 4s w my SIM and get provisioned for HSPA+ and b) have them reset my VM.
They UPS guy better have my phone tomorrow! lol

Help using my Nexus on ATT

Hello everyone, im very new to android, just recently switches from IOS... I currently have the G Note, love the device and screen but for me its a little to big and haven't been able to adjust to it yet...
Im selling my Note on ebay and have already purchased a Nexsus from ebay unlocked GSM, the research ive done tells me that I can get HSPA + plus speeds and ive heard some talk about LTE to? just curious as to what setting with the network that I would need to input so I get HSPA+ speeds... I know on the G Note forum there was a great link as to what settings to enter (APN and Proxy addresses)
I hope what I wrote is understandable, excuses my newbenes lol
Thanks for the help, you guys are the best.
You can just put your SIM in. If your SIM was provisioned properly to get HSPA+ on the Note, you'll get it on the GNex also, possibly with some small APN changes.
You will not get LTE.

What he said. It'll work on AT&T out of the box, just pop your sim in.

Nano SIM in GS3 = No Data

So I have a ATT GS3, and got an ATT iPhone 5.
Then I bought a Nano SIM Adapter to switch between the tow, but for some reason with the Nano SIM in the GS3 calls text all work but NO Data.
I've read on the ATT Forums people having the same issues.
Any fix for this?
I did notice my Data plan now says iPhone 4G LTE Data, when it used to say Smartphone LTE data, and I was able to switch from an iPhone 4S to the GS3.
Anyone also using a Micro SIM from the GS3 converted to a Nano SIM?
Are you getting LTE on both devices this way??
I could always fall back to the GS3 being the primary phone and Data package if the Smartphone LTE Data worked on the IP5.
Thanks
You may have to switch back to the smartphone data LTE plan to use the GS3.

That's because the people at ATT agree that the iPhone 5 isn't really that smart (Feed the troll!)

Yeah I'm in the same boat. I've come to find that you do have to switch the data plans. Kind of like with the blackberry, the iPhone has its own type of data plan for some reason with att. Hope this helps!

before you switch check APN settings.
I looked at the APN settings on the GS3, and they are the same as they were when they worked with the Micro SIM.
It has to do with the iPhone data.
What I want to know is will the SmartPhone LTE Data work on the iPhone 5?
It won't work, like what others have said they both have different data plans. If you want to use your GS3 you have to call AT&T to have the LTE Smartphone data plan activated. If you want to use your iPhone you have to call them again to switch back to the iPhone data plan.
Yep, as the others said you will need to switch to an LTE plan to enable data. I manually changed my APN to get data working when I switched from a temp iPhone to my GS3. I got a text from AT&T telling me I needed to change to a 4G LTE Data plan the next day.
I do the same thing with my GS3 using a micro sim adapter. Since I don't live in a LTE area, i just switch my APN settings from PTA to Phone. I also switch back to iphone for a day just to verify the sim is still working on it. Been doing this for about two weeks, haven't received any text from AT&T, my account still says I'm on the LTE unlimited data plan.. so all is well.
Have iPhone 5. Want to use Nano SIM in Samsung

OK, so I do live in Dallas which has awesome LTE coverage. I just joined ATT and got an iPhone 5. I plan on purchasing a Samsung Note or Galaxy S III. I already purchased the Noosy Nano-Sim adapter and want to be able to use my nano-sim in the Samsung.
So, I've read multiple posts and I'm still not sure what is the solution.
Do I make the Samsung the primary phone and data package? Will the iPhone 5 work now?
I would like to be able to make this change without having to switch my data package from Smartphone LTE to iPhone LTE.
Can anyone help me??

I am on the iPhone LTE Unlimited data plan with ATT, and switch back and forth with various other phones (htc one x+, LG optimus G, and S3) using the same iPhone 5 Nano SIM card with no problems. I'm not sure of the answer if my data package was a smartphone LTE instead of the iphone LTE package.

Thanks for the info shockandawe. I'm a new customer on the mobile share with my primary geing an iphone, so I would think ours would work the same. I'll try it out. Need to find me an LTE phone on craigslist or ebay.
I dealt with that exact thing. I had to call AT&T each time I switched the sim to get the data working properly. Just like others said, if I take my sim and put it in my GS3 all will work except data. AT&T never gave me a hard time about calling and switching plans. But I didn't want to keep going through that.

Anyone try the P-601 on AT&T

I'm hoping to do this as I currently have a One-XL and the HSPA+ is fast enough but am sick of the hotspot, anyone try it?

Yep. And I used a N-8000 (N10.1-12) for over a year before that. It's great not only from a constant connectivity perspective (not having the device bog down syncing every time it connects to Wi-Fi) but also from having a full keyboard for MMS and a gigantic battery for long conference calls so your phone's battery isn't hosed. Using Pen Window minimized with the phone app for a call when you're using S Note to take notes from the call is pretty spiffy. I don't know if it still exists for new service but AT&T's IMEI database doesn't know what the SM-P601/N-8000 are. I added them to my account for $9.99 as a non-Smartphone and got unlimited data for non-Smartphones for $10 more.

4 Questions
1. Would you be willing to run a speed test for me?
2. Where did you get yours?
3. Is it the unlocked model or a country specific model
4. Did you have any issues connecting it to the towers?

The SM-P601/5 are really just giant phones. They most likely have the same radios as the S-800/Exynos N3's and would perform the same way. Pop a SIM in that's on a smartphone data plan and you've got voice, MMS, and data just like you would on a phone. HSPA+ download speeds on AT&T are between 5-8MB which I'm fine with.
Mine's from Negri and its got a Trinidad CSC which most of their HSPA+ devices do. All international devices are unlocked and it didn't have region lock applied like some of Samsung's newer smartphones do.
P.S. - The LTE versions that will eventually be sold by the U.S. carriers will have the voice and MMS features disabled; they always do.

nexus 7 as phone

Hello,
I tried searching but for whatever reason I came up with absolutely nothing, nothing! Guess some things screwy with search or my account.
So I've used sprint for years now basically because its the only provider with towers in my area. I'm currently using a nexus 5 and recently started using a at&t gophone Sim in it when I go out of the county. I then bought a Nexus 4 to put the Sim card in but now I'm missing LTE which seems to be way faster that sprints and much more readily available. Heck hpsa+ is much faster than sprints LTE here when I go far enough to get sprint LTE.
Is it possible to but a LTE version of the nexus 7 and then root it with a ROM with a dialer and then pop my gophone sim in and use it through Bluetooth?
I don't think it supports cellular calls at all; AT&T also might flag it as a tablet.
You could try voip out with, if you have good T-Mobile reception, one of their tablet plans. They do allow SMS on them. You might be able to use Vonage with that number. I've paired them up just fine on a Samsung T869. You won't have any incoming calls or voicemail (maybe through Vonage?) but voip worked great for me on T-Mobile LTE.
Also, if you know anyone with postpaid T-Mobile you can get a data plan really cheap on their account. Verizon postpaid plans don't look too bad either but you'd have to go all voip.
Thanks for your response. I unfortunately don't have T-Mobile coverage for probably 50 miles or more. I have a Magicsim dual Sim tray on the way for my nexus 5. If that doesn't work I'll be buying another nexus 5 then for my att Sim. Thanks!
