[Q] boot from removeable SD? - Samsung Captivate Glide

Has anyone managed to boot directly from the removable SD?

We are in the early stages of development, so no. Why would you want to anyway?

I'm interested in running a mini Debian system (not "Debian inside Android") without any chance of bricking the system.
The Captive Glide's HW looks promising but I'd have to buy via third party resellers because it isn't available in the EU...

Switching from captivate to desire.

Ok so I'm switching carriers and have to select a new phone. I'm absolutely in love with my captivate on 2.2 and am hopeful that the desire will be an acceptable substitute since the new carriers selection just sucks for android (hero, milestone, desire) But before I bite the bullet theres a couple questions I was hoping to get answered.
Wifi tether: I used the wifi tether app that you can sideload and hated it. Have since switched to a new rom that includes the native mobileap app and it works flawlessly. Does the desire have a similar native app that can be loaded with a custom rom?
Apps. I am an iphone convert and haven't had anything but the captivate. Are all my apps tied to my device or google info? Ie: will I have to rebuy apps when I get a new phone

first of all the desire ****s on the captivate as far as tethering goes, the desire comes with an app called wifi hotspot, this lets you turn your desire into a portable hotspot, you can then connect to it using a laptop/pc, and share the devices internet connection, ive even used my desire to connect to xbox live lol as long as you use the same gmail ID, you can download all the apps you bought on your last phone and use them on your new one
I promise, not disagreeing or being a fanboy. But in what way is the desire better? On paper, the captivate has the larger, better quality screen, better gpu, and just generally faster specs. Is it Sense? Because I do love sense (used an aria for a few days on loan from AT&T) but I hear a lot of people gripe about the speed hit you take (similar to touchwiz does on captivate).
Also, it will not be on vzw it will be on a local carrier that has em. Will custom rooms still work or will it require modification on my part?
The custom rom part is important.because the rom that comes on it is 2.1

The captivate also has a better screen without any multitouch bugs too. But I'd prefer the Desire because of sense. If the desire you get is unbranded FroYo is already out for it, but if it's not you can root it and put custom roms on it. Or you can debrand it if you want official froyo.
As long as you dont need so much fps in games, the Desire owns the captivate. Roms are available everywhere and you can get alot of them in the dev section! you won't regret
Thanks guys! A little less worried now about it. I despise going to a local carrier vs. national but can't justify the cost of staying on att

[Q] HTC Desire Z / G2 Successor (Upgrade)

Hey,
Has there been any rumours of late of a decent replacement to the HTC Desire Z / G2 with a QUERTY keyboard and MicroSD card slot?
Although I love the DZ (and the Android System) I am starting to see performance defects with using multiple apps - being a bit of a power user as I am .
Sadly HTC have decided to give up making QUERTY phones so I hope some company with make a phone to the same or exceeds the standard HTC made.
Thanks,
dounowhoiam

The terrible keyboard on the G2 cured me of my reliance on a QWERTY keyboard.
Recent phones from HTC has cured me of any loyalty I had for them (after having a G1 and a G2)
If I were to get a new phone today it would absolutely be an SIII.
I'd say currently the only actual available upgrade to the G2 is the Motorola DROID 4:
1.2 GHz Dual-core CPU
1 GB of RAM
16 GB internal storage (plus MicroSDHC slot)
1080p video
HDMI port
- mcsmart
Give large screen phones a go, the keybaord is easy to use there and to be honest sometimes faster to use (swype anyone).

Unfortunately no. This is something I am obssessed with following (had the G1 back in the day) and love the tradpad, qwerty combination on an android. There has been several rumors and wisphers but nothing solid. And it looks like google is moving more against qwerty (gnex has basically no physical buttons), and HTC had publicaly said no more qwerty's.
The droid 4 might be the closet match but I am not a fan. I tried the keyboard at VZ, not impressed (although Im currently spoiled by the best qwerty on a bb 9900), and its bootlocked.
I second waterscent, I actually liked the gnex at VZ so much I am seriously considering upgrading to it. Either that or the G2. I might just get a G2 and hold until my dream phone.
Either way I have basically made TONS of posts about this, g2 replacement idea. Check out my username and other posts/threads I have made about it..

windows rom on sd card

ok have to ask i remember when we could run android from the sd card on windows phone htc hd2 this was great when i had the hd2 now got the galaxy s2 with ICS and its great but now am wondering if windows rom can be ported to the sd card on the galaxy s2 without the use of magldr or nand.
Basically impossible... drivers first of all... and honestly... probably little to no demand.... easier to just go buy a windows phone...

For now. Jelly Bean was supposed to be the first step away from carrier borking of android framework. Essentially, the intention was to stop the current segregation. And it was said there was interest in supporting dual boot. Who knows, money talks, so neither may ever become a reality

If you want to boot different roms From sdcard you can try this boot manager https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.drx2.bootmanager

He's asking for WP7 not multiple android ROMs. However i use that app mentioned and its freaking awesome. It better helps me pick a DD when new releases come out
But per OP:
WP7 on any phone other than WP7 or HD2 is going to be impossible. As the second post stated. the drivers and guts to get it working are not avaliable for the S2 as they were for the HD2. I have an HD2 as well and the reason for the vast choice in ROMs and platforms is because they were able to get a hold of the raw sources for the drivers which the devs than sprinkled some xda-dust on and tweaked the code to run in different platforms. The HD2 is one of the most vastly developed devices ive ever seen/read/owned. I wish mine was still in pristene condition. lol.
thank you for all your info guys and looks like i will need to get the htc hd2 to injoy windows, i started out with windows as my frist smart phone the tmobile dash lol that one died and aslo the dash 3g, but still injoying the galaxy S2 still has a ton of life to it, but then i remember having the htc hd2 and then got the galaxy S2 and befor i sold the hd2 i did some compairing using youtube play on both phones and the screen display on the hd2 was so close to the galaxy S2 also speed wise was close but then just one thing that the hd2 lacked was a front camera, but still always :good: for the hd2.

Safe strap 3.0 for nexus?

idk if yall know what safestrap is but its the recovery hash of codes made for the droid 3,4 raz and other motorola phones but the cool part is anything 3.0 and up has the abilty to multiply os's like 5 slots you can choose from it would make testing roms much easier if we could get this, i no developer so i couldnt make it happen but maybe someone will read this and make some magic...
I just installed 3.0 for my spare Droid 4, and it's actually pretty cool. I wonder if they got the idea from the (now dead) Boot Manager app in the Play Store. (I used to love that app)
This would be pretty awesome to have on our Nexus phones. I wonder if it's too large of a project seeing as how Nexus phones aren't locked down as much as motorola phones?
We have TWRP and CWM. No need for a bootstrap. You want to switch between multiple ROMs easily? Just use a NANDroid of each one and alternate as desired.
Razr and other motorola safe strap compatible phones usually have a memory card expansion slot, whereas our phone is solely dependent on that 16gb. So its not really a feasible option to give up the precious storage for the partition slots.

Dual Boot on S4

Is there any way we could get dual booting on the S4? It doesn't matter if its a port or whatever, I just wanna be able to easily dual boot between stock and CM10.1
Currently we do not have an option to duel boot. I would love to see something like this but with the size of the roms we are dealing with the system partition would not be able to handle it. Not saying it absolutely cant be done but it would take a pretty dedicated dev to knock this out i think.
I'm pretty sure that it's possible to boot off sd (I'm pretty sure that's how the hd2 has stayed alive all these years) but i wouldn't know if it's possible on our phone. Would be awesome though, would be able to test ubuntu os n fire fox os if they are ever ported to our phones

There is a dual boot kernel for the galaxy Note 2.. Maybe the same guy can make one for the s4
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda premium
So far, this is the only thing my Thunderbolt could do the S4 can't.
The second (and third, fourth...) ROMs are stored on SD until you boot them.
I was booting between 10 Roms on my evo3d , check YouTube for my nino-boot video, if anyone has the time, porting bootmanager would make it possible.
This would be awesome to have.
I would pay for this.
I'm on Sprint BTW, if it matters for this feature?
I found this thread via Google search s4 dual boot.
if we achive the dual-boot will be possible to boot another os without any other work? as said a guy up here it would be lovely to try firefox os or windows phone or any other os...
Dual boot would be awesome. I had 4 different roms on my RAZR... Downside of the sa4 having a huge os I guess.
Hopefully it can be done! I would pay for it as well

i wouldnt recommend messing with that, since its in the i9500 forums , our phones cant use anything from those forums because of the different hardware, unless this is an exception
