Why do I need to pay to unlock my bootloader? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This seems like a huge rip off, what is the true way to unlock the bootloader with the r800at?

You can try and devise a free way to unlock the bootloader, but so far it hasn't been done. For now, in order to unlock the bootloader you need SETool credits which cost money.

How is it a rip off? You device is locked to AT&T and thus the price of the device was subsidised by the carrier meaning your device was cheaper, sony refuse to officially unlock the bootloader of carrier locked devices to protect the investment AT&T made in your device, if you don't want to incur extra costs in future, put your hand in your pocket and pay for a factory unlocked device and all the benefits that come with it.

The fact I say its a rip, is because im coming from an atrix which I was able to unlock my atrix with.
How can I buy these credits myself rather than pay people on here?
And also, I did not know about the credits until now. Its why I originally asked, because I wanted to know where my money would be going.

SEtool only sell there credits in bundles, i think 60 is the minimum, thats why these bootloader unlockers offer this service, you can buy a single unlock licence for omnius, but omnius is much harder to use than SEtool, and you need a special cable to connect the testpoints as the battery needs to be inserted to use omnius, on the other hand all you need with SEtool is a paperclip.

I'll be paying to get my bootloader unlocked today, being charged $24, now that I know why the cost is there, I have no problem paying now.

Remember unlocking the bootloader removes all security from the phone including sim lock, so it's not a bad deal, i payed more to get the sim lock removed from my DHD

I was wondering the same thing as OP til you said this, but i have another question/Comment on why. I Work for att and get a "Special" rate plan with no contract.
IE i dont get a discounted price with a two year contract. Although im sure the answer is the same since its through att, why dont i get mine for free, since i received no price cut.

Another reason is the person unlocking your bootloader has to sit individualy with every unlock run all the programs and do all the work and you really are complaining over $24 for simple and bootloader unlocked plus when I got mine done he answered every question I threw at him and never complained that's priceless Imo
if you don't want to pay don't get the service there are alternatives to root and recovery. Pay or don't but don't complain if you do.

Absolutley, I dont think anyone person in this thread is complaining about paying a person to do it. I think its more of, that Some HAVE to pay and some don't, which some one explained. If EVERYONE had to pay for there bootloader unlocking then i highly doubt anyone would complain. Get it?

Ahh... this thread answered my question. I was wondering the same thing, about why we have to pay, and how they get the unlock key. My new question however is.... So i pay and get SEtool, and pay to get 60 licenses or whatever the minimum is you have to get, is there a tutorial or anything to teach me how to do it myself? I dont mind paying to have it done by someone, I just love learning how to do these kinda things myself.
(mainly, i dont like relying on other people. Plus this way, if i brick my own phone, who cares, i did it, but if i pay some one, and they brick it then i would be pissed! In my opinion if you pay someone for a product and its damaged, they assume responsibility for it by charging you. It would be like, if you paid to have your car worked on by a mechanic, and he blew the head gasket in the process, would you be ok, with them telling you, its your fault for having the work done, and they arent liable?... HELL NO!..... lol)

The free way is at unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com. The specific criteria is you need to have a GSM model Play, which is not SIM locked to a carrier.
You cannot currently use this tool with the CDMA Play. For a time, we exploited a weakness in the tool's form validation to submit MEID's to the tool. This exploit was made public and has been fixed. If you want a more detailed explanation see my post here.
You cannot use this tool with a SIM locked (Carrier Locked) GSM Play, as the SIM lock prevents the phone from booting into fastboot mode. Without fastboot, you cannot issue the unlock command with the key generated by the tool.

I consider the free unlock a rip-off because it ruins the DRM for customers who paid more. I want my HULU+, Netflix, Playstation Pocket, etc thank you very much.

[Q] LG Optimus ME (p350) unlocking

I wonder if anyone with that phone had this issue to think about. Is there any way to unlock it for FREE? I saw an "Unlocking rom" for this phone, but some people responded negatively after using it. I dont a solution after which i have to unbrick my phone.
Thanks.
...
anyone, who could help?
I guess there is no free solution how to sim unlock this phone...
Just try to talk to your service porvider to give you the unlock codes
just give them ur IMEI no. to get it jhust simply type *#06#
courcem have
Thats one of the solution but in Eastern European countries this is expensive cuz service providers are not regulated by law to do it free or for lower cost so they often have too high prices for unlock service...
I unlocked mine just by rooting it. However in some cases a Firmware flash can help or if you dont want to be on stock a Custom ROM

Sorry for bringing up the old topic.
I've rooted my LG p350 but it's still SIM locked.
Is there really no way to unlock it as with most other Androids? I'm not paying 50€ for unlocking a phone that's now worth 30€.

Well doing a kdz flash *might* unlock it but I really doubt it. You will probably have to take it some mobile shop to unlock it. You could also try to go to your mobile operator and ask them to unlock it, but they will consider it only if your contract expired.

Yeah, that's the issue, mobile operators in my country aren't obligated by law to unlock the phones for free even after the contract ends, they actually charge it around 40-50€, that's about 70$, and that's dobule what the phone is worth today, so it's not an option.
I'll try the KDZ flash, maybe it works.
Thank you.

Did the KDZ flash work? My daughters P350 is over 1 year old, I got the unlockcodes from the operator, but the phone does not work with these. I somewhere read that a custom ROM can be in the way of unlocking SIM. Any ideas on that?
Where can I find a stock ROM? Netherlands Vodafone...
Thanks a lot in advance.
Never mind, a little too quick here. Found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221132 where all answers are given, just unlocked the P350 :good::laugh::victory:
Hey win69, finally you managed to sim unlock your phone? My English is not perfect and I do not quite understand if by flashing the ROM (you suggest in your post), you finally unlock your phone. Thank you for your answer!

He is probably relying on a service that will get the unlock code but I'm not aware of any that have unlock codes for the ion. Its exclusive to AT&T so I seriously doubt you can get it unlocked for at least a few months. You can't even buy one unlocked in the US for full price.

Yeah, more than likely it'll be pretty much a repeat of the x10a only (since a lot of the ground work done) quicker process. We'll all end up w sum variant of the stock sony rom(or any but att) w custom recovery. I was never able to do much of anything w the stock usa roms, come to think of it not even sure att saw GB, don't think so. eb

But my question is, how long before someone does? The bootloader being locked just bums me out. I really want this phone. And the price is making it really possible for me, but I almost feel like I should just wait even longer for something else, or pay the $200 for a GS III.
I really need to get my hands on the Ion. Has anyone gone into a BB or ATT store to get theirs and seen a demo unit?
I have ... the phone looks and feels great. i've read a few reports of signal issues. i think i'm going to wait a few weeks and get two one for me and one for my girl mid july for the price... and ics coming soon... it's a dopeass phone for sure. i loved the way it felt in my hand the screen is gorgeous. the camera was super fast too... idk it was nice.

This was the answer from the ebay seller:
" I can unlock the phone for $30 extra. It is a factory unlock and not through special ROMS which allows you to keep all stock Sony firmware. It is a permanent factory unlock."
I´m not from the US and I´m looking to buy either a Xperia S or Xperia Ion. As the Ion is newer, would like to go for it. I will be in the US by mid july but still looking to find for a good price for a non-contract and unlocked, but it seems that Ion will be higher anyway. If the unlocking would be a easy thing, I would by the no contract phone at Sony store for example, but it seems I will have to go for the Xperia S
I would be leary of anyone who promises they can unlock the BL at this point. Unfortunately there's absolutely no way of knowing for sure if and when this will happen for the att "unlock not allowed model". eb

From that eBay quote, sounds like he must be selling the international version of the ion(lt28i) not the AT&T ion(lt28at). That's the only way I can think of for the unlocked with Sony factory firmware settings.

This guy is advertising that he can unlock the phone for $25

The only thing is when you go to purchase it locked to Canada and Rogers so I can not sure about it.
The ion will be one hell of a device if we can just get passed the issue of unlocking for ATT :/ really wish i had an international one just so i can play with it. i really hate the bloat ware they are shipped with. all in all preformance and hardware wise i see the ion staying alive for a few years. longer than what the x10 did in my opinion.

LT28At Carrier Unlock

Has anyone tried getting AT&T to unlock an off-contract xperia ion? I'd love to buy the phone, and $449 is an awesome price point (esp compared to the Galaxy Nexus at $350), but I'd really like to use it with T-mobile.
Google it some site selling unlock code for about $30 but don't buy it from unlockit dot com for $9.95 because they can't do it and will refund your money. Buy the phone on ebay cheaper for about $350 but if you use it on T-mobile then you only get "E" speed.

It might actually be better to wait for the acro S, which I believe Sony plans to sell unlocked?
Anyone have any idea how long it'll take for the acro S to get here?
I have unlocked few AT&T phones that I bought off-contract. Usually a phone call to their customer service works. But some reps might not be helpful - so you should save your receipt and email AT&T for the unlock code.
They won't give you an unlock code for the ion because it is exclusive to AT&T in the US. It will take a few months before they give it out.
Well, I had no problem with getting the unlock code from AT&T for their exclusive phones (X10, Play). I just had to tell them I'm gonna pay the whole off-contract price and I need to use it overseas (which was actually my case). I always call them first to check the availability of the unlock code - then I go buy it
Even if the phone is purchased full MSRP without subsidization they will not give you the unlock code for the Ion...

Nope. Notice how even on Sony's online store they don't sell it unlocked. That's due to the agreement with AT&T. If you want it unlocked you have to buy the international version from out of the US.

Myself and another person have tried worldGSMcodes.com, cellphoneunlock.net and mobile gadgets co/Unlockitnow.com no luck. Cellcorner I did not try but have read alot of reviews. The reviews were dominantly not favourable.Keep in mind there description speaks of a joystick which we haven't seen on sony ericssons for quite a long time. Ive contacted cellunlocker.net and they can't do it either. I've tried the more expensive factory sony factory unlock options with these websites and they refunded me. Right now all we can do is wait for the exclusive agreement to end in the USA.

I have a locked bootloader c6506 as well, currently there is no way around the locked bootloader if you aren't allowed to unlock it through the official way.
Bootloader unlock allowed no solved. Its locked by your carrier. You have to call your carrier and talk to them and push hard to get what you want. Or call Sony. carrier lock is the problem here. The bootloader is locked by the carrier. not Sony. After its carrier unlocked if u cant unlock the bootloader then you have to take it to a sony technician to get your bootloader unlocked Hit thanks if I helped in any way and pls check forums for my other posts and projects thanks again

Carrier unlock IS NOT bootloader unlock. The ONLY way at the moment to get a guaranteed BL unlockable device, is to get it DIRECTLY from Sony Store (USA). I contacted the few Sony Stores in Canada (GTA area) and many of the people I talked to didn't even know what the BL is so it's not reliable. I got mine off ebay and got the seller to check before I bought it. Only the C6506 variants direct from the Sony Store are likely to have unlockable BL. No technician (unless they work for Sony) will be able to unlock the bootloader.
Also, $75 is WAAAY to much for carrier/SIM unlock. You can probably find it for $20-$40 from a cell unlock website. Cheaper than that if you're lucky.
bell was going to unlock my phone and send me a code to unlock the bootloader. so there you go. I talked to them and figured it out. its the carrier who locked the bootloader not sony

That doesn't sound right. If it was that easy to unlock the BL more people would do it, and it would be more known in the community. And I'm pretty sure you can't unlock the BL with just a code. It's an incredibly more complex procedure than that. See http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/instructions. It sounds like they are misleading you to believe it will unlock the bootloader, rather than just SIM unlock. Of course it is the carrier who locks the bootloader, that's why I said the only way to get an unlockable ZL is straight from Sony, who has no carrier branding.

I think you're confusing people... the OP is asking for BOOTLOADER unlock, not a carrier unlock, calling Bell (Or any other carrier for that matter) will NEVER solve the problem, it's not the carriers that lock the bootloader, it's SONY. And calling them wont help either, unless it's a developer phone purchased directly through Sony, you won't be able to unlock.
I'm sure with time, some group of diligent Devs will crack the bootloader problem the same way that Revolutionary.IO cracks through S-Off for HTC's
In the interim, you're out of luck.
This is somewhat depressing. Gods, how I miss Cyanogenmod on my S3. I find it very difficult to believe that there is no solution for this. Sure, it hasn't yet been developed, but there is always a way.
Just be patient folks. Something will pop up sooner or later.
I hope.

Almost, it's not the carrier that locks it, or even the carrier that requests it be locked, it's Sony locking it before sending it. Unlocking the bootloader is a DEVELOPMENT option, not a CONSUMER option, anything that is going to the hands of a consumer gets locked, ie. ALL CARRIER phones.
Unlocking the bootloader mean you can write to the system partitions without using EXPLOITS to gain root access (Which is what we're doing now)
It's the fastest way for a consumer to brick their phone, which is why they all leave the factory locked, unless you're buying directly from them, at which point, they assume you aren't a consumer, and you may then unlock your bootloader by use of http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ and FastBoot in the Android Dev Kit.
Not to beat a dead horse or get into a he said she said scenario, But let me explain how it all works to the best of my ability.
First do not call any carrier and think they will understand what it means to unlock a bootloader, for the most part they are not aware of the bootloader. this is not covered in they're training.
Now Sony locks the bootloaders for carriers, this is a request from the carriers. Sony could care less if it's locked or not. The carriers care, why do they care you may ask. well if the phones they sold had unlocked bootloaders than you could more easily sim unlock you phone and move on. on top off that the ability to brick your phone increases 10 fold. now how many users would mess up their phone and just return it and lie to get a new phone. now the carrier sends it back to Sony under warranty and Sony does not honor the warranty as they know it was tampered with.
Sony is pretty good at supporting Dev's and even has an aosp 4.3 version for user's to try.
last thing i want to say is don't hold your breath on a hack to un lock a locked down bootloader. our batteries are not removable and this makes the processes harder. I bought my Xperia S the week it was launched and a solution for that phone never came. well at least not one I could confirm works. See when the xperia s was released it's was Sony's first phone they made without Ericson. from my understanding this was part of the reason why it got harder. we need access to the SE s1 server and last I checked it was offline fopr over a year, came online for a week and a few users were able to pay 60 us to have there unlockable bootloaders unlocked. as Sony devs could do it with the S1 server and apologize to SE move on.
I'm not sure if this will help or not but do a Google search on how unlocking phones started and read how it has evolved. a good place to start is to search for se s1 server.
hope this helps.
I will explain again my convo i had with bell about unlocking my phone and bootloader. they even asked me do i understand i will lose warrenty if i unlock my bootloader. i said yes they were gonna send me the code to unlock the bootloader. but i couldnt cause i didnt have the phone for 90 days. it can only be done through ur carrier cause they send u the bootloader unlock code u need to unlock it. unlocking the phone they do through the imei. It costs 75$ extra added onto ur phone bill though. but for the price of one gaurenteed way to unlock it its worth it. they said they had to contact sony too in the convo i had with the bell guy. it was a supervisor i talked to and understood exactly what i wanted done. he knew what i was talking about as well. so its possible. just hasn't been confrimed yet. and heres a huge hint. someones working on a hack for this. eta idk. im gonna be one of the testers for this hack/exploit. i cant say much else. top secret of course.

Did you get the code? Are you now able to install a custom kernel? If not, then this is completely irrelevant. If so, you've saved a lot of people a pretty decent headache.
We need you to confirm this as $75 is a steep fee for something nobody is even sure is legit. Sure, you say it is, and I'm not disputing you, but I need evidence before I give Bell free money. I need to be 100% sure.
If you can install Cyanogenmod, that's all I want.
[Also, I saw in your signature you're being screwed by Rogers. High-five, me too!]
well i still have to wait a bit. hasnt been 90 days since i got my first xperia zl. first one i bricked second one fell down the stairs on my third one now. 90 days to wait for my new one but im gonna try and see if i can get the code and use it on mine if it works yay will let u guys know for sure.

100% guaranteed they're talking about SIM unlock. Sorry. 'Unlocking the bootloader' is not something you can do with a code provided by a carrier, and a 90 day wait is *precisely* Rogers' policy for SIM unlocks. They are going to give you a SIM unlock code and charge you a lot of money for it. You could get it now, for $8, from any one of a bunch of unlock sellers.
I will explain one last time for those who dont have the time to understand. I called bell myself. Have any of u even tried calling ur carrier? Probably not. This works. I called bell i asked my phone to be fully "unlocked" this includes the bootloader. They said they could unlock the carrier onlt but i would have to wait for my bootloader unlock code to be sent to me by someone else. Only one else that could be is sony. So there. Anyone else not gonna actually try calling their carrier? I even talked to sony they said only they can send the bootloader unlock code but to do that i have to have my carrier unlock my phone fully for me and have my carrier contact sony to send me my bootloader unlock code. I havent had my phone long enough to do this but it works clearly. Sony confirmed it to me over the phone. One of the higher ups. Asked for a supervisor and i got one of their devs on. So anyone else want keep trolling this thread? I only speak the truth. Those who have doubt in life will fail. Have no doubt or fear and you will always succeed

Weird I contacted Sony myself also and I was told by them that if it says no for bootloader they can't unlock the bootloader. Seems to be some mis information but it also depends on who you talk to. We need to find a alternate way to unlock

I obtained a an unlock code from Verizon for my phone when it asks for a code to change carriers. Not sure if it is universal though. May be IMEI specific.

I figured that'd be the case. Thanks. First time I've had to obtain one and actually got it. Their customer support is not so great. They acted like I was asking for the impossible and continued to tell me it is unlocked. I said dude it says it is locked to you! I know the bootloader is I guess nearly impossible to unlock. Apparently only dev editions can be unlocked. Surely they have the tools do such. Not sure if I'll get a Motorola again. It's basically owning something you don't fully own.

I did have a little Moto X XT1060 I think? I think it might have been a dev edition. Was a pretty good phone. Most of those (non carrier branded) won't be sold in retail stores I wouldn't imagine so I guess you have to buy online? I have purchased unlocked phones on Ebay. I was just in a jam for this one and got it from Wal-Mart and on top of that it had a sorry 14-day return policy. That is asinine.

Hi I have an art locked phone (found in the e-waste container with puffy battery ordered new battery works 100% fine)
Yet art refuses to send a bootloader unlock code because the whatever period is not passed or something isn't paid off idk.
Can I unlock the bootloader or at least remove the SIM lock somehow so I can use it with my mint SIM?
Thanks

nah dude, unless you can hack the bootloader, you're pretty much stuck there. The problem is the key is generated by a program on their end, so unless you get access to this program( literally impossible) or hack the bootloader you can't access it. Its like if they gave you a pad lock without the key. You would have to look through the lock mechanism and trick it into opening, but there is probably some issues along if you can even achieve this

I think too
Hi
so finally att sent me an unlock code.
i can't however unlock the bootloader. not even via https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-b where if i inspect the page and make the "get my code" button appear it drops me to a 404 otherwise i copypaste the requested code (including #s) it says "Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking." the phone has att logo on it and at boot the att logo pops up too. but why can i put in now other sim, but can't upload another firmware? makes no sense.
is there a way to unlock bootloader somehow nowadays?
the phone also powers up to fastboot which i can't seem to fix either.
thanks
no test point? no "hack"? i'm stuck with att branded software? what a garbage...
