[Q] system update - Acer Iconia Tab A100

Hello xda people! I just joined the forums after reading about the new system update for a while. I just wanted to know if in order for me to get the new update to 3.2.1 i need to change my GEN since i have GEN2. Or if i could just do the update manually from you guys, or if i should wait for it? Ive seen now the us is getting it, but i havent had any update at all.

from what I can tell you with my device which came with gen2 software I downgraded to the gen1 stock firmware avail in the dev section an hit update an got my 2 updates to the latest version out right now.

I see, well i downloaded one of the GEN1. I would like to know what's the process of downgrading, I'm new to all of this and don't know what to do to be honest (Even though I always catch up really fast lol). I want to downgrade so I can get the update. Thank you.

You don't need to do anything of the sort, there's a flash able GEN2 3.2.1 .zip for us GEN2 guys, you just need to download it, decrypt it using the Acer decrypt tool, put the decrypted file in the root of the SD card, turn off the device and hold volume up and power until Mr. Android with Gears shows up and automatically updates it.

Thanks, littleemp, I think I found it, though it says GEN1, the person said it works for both GEN1 and GEN2.

Here's the encrypted update zip I used for my A100 GEN2.

Awesome, thanks a lot!

I have a little problem with the download, I've downloaded that .zip you gave me twice already and it says the file is either unknown format or damaged. Any idea of what's happening?

Per post #4, you have to decrypt it with the decrypter tool in one of the other threads and then drop it onto the main sdcard folder. And then reboot as explained above.

Totally missed that, thanks a lot!

Worked perfectly, any idea if the GEN2 people will be able to get the newest? The 2.007.4 or something like that? Thanks again!

Here is a link to the gen2 decrypted file.

I don't even know what changes were on that update though, I thought the only really bad bug on these devices was the headphones thing.
In any case, assuming the timetable that Acer gave us for ICS holds up, then it shouldn't be very far off, so I'm just going to sit tight and wait for it.

[ROM]ROOTSide (In the Works. First Upload this week)

ROOTSide ROM
Base Flipside ROM with root/busybox/unknown sources enabled. Only thing different in this rom than rooting it yourself is you get to check/uncheck unknown sources. Yes, that means you can turn unknown sources ON and OFF! I have a clockworkmod recovery folder zipped up for distribution, but I want to post a full-fledged ROM zip file for the masses. PM me, and I will send you the ZIP file that I have right now.
What you get:
base install for the flipside (AT&T) with motoblur ready to set up. It is the exact same thing as doing a factory reset, but you get all the benefits of superuser with busybox and the addead feature of having unknown sources checkbox in the settings.
I will work towards a deoxed version this weekend as well.
No custom bootscreen (yet). No custom anything, really.
Almost There
I am currently in the middle of Deodexing the image. I have added in wifi tethering, and ensured it will have superuser and busybox pre-packaged. Next step is pushing this to my wife's phone and not having her get a pretty brick in return. If all goes well, I will be posting the image by morning light (CST).
Fingers Crossed!
Well
Things didn't go too well with my first build attempt. Appears to be a permission issue with the /system folder. I will sleep on it, and give it a second go in the morning. Sorry for the apparent "tease". If you want a faster build, I could use some other devs working with me.
Hey man, sounds like you're doing great! Keep it up...I already found a way to get the root with unknown sources checked, so i'm just gonna wait for the deoxed version! Hope it goes well as you try again.
Current Issues
unable to deodex the following:
/system/app/AABSync.odex
/system/app/blur-services.odex
Will try to load to phone without dodexing those two files. Hopefully all will go well.
Me too...good luck!!

Glad to see some work on this device, I love the form factor but it's obviously not very popular with devs...
Very interested to see this come around. I would like to streamline the wife's phone. Her battery life is a 1/3 of my rooted and flashed X10. Sadly though I am NOT a Dev nor even a cook.
I would have had something sooner, but I ran into issues not related to the ROM. Still working on it. Anybody have an idea for upgrading the CWM from the one we can currently use?
so I was curious, I was able to get to unlock mode with an sqlite thing and it worked just fine for me, but have you been able to knock out the bloat and stuff? cause it sounds like the makings of a custom rom lol
you know what the turtle said.. slowly but surely I will win this race

Several ppl have said they have run into this problem...don't know what the deal is...
Is it possible to get CM7, or it's a problem with a locked kernel?
Ok, I just got a new phone for the Mrs., so I can break the flipside and unbreak it as much as I like.
Time for some real fearless development lol.

So check this out...I messaged the guy at modmymobile and asked how things were going becuase I heard people were having problems getting an updated CMW and this is his response:
"been sittin on the updated cwm recovery binaries and been draggin my feet/takin a break the past week or 2. i'll throw something out soon, but cant commit to a timeframe, sorry."
Looks like things are on the up and up...stay patient everyone
GOOD JOB!!!,

[Q] Failed OTA upgrade to ICS

Hi, I will try to be as consice and thorough as possible since I looked for it but didn´t find a similar post.
I bought a USA's A100. I had it with its factory rom, rooted and working fine.
The last week I saw an OTA upgrade and applied it (a short file) thinking it was to migrate to ICS. Then, after reset, it showed me a larger OTA upgrade: Acer_A100_041.202.01_COM_GEN2 (right now it's at HC 3.2.1 A100_2.013.02_COM_GEN2). First it gave me the known network problem message, but finally I downloaded and applied the OTA file, it failed showing an android with an exclamation point, and after one minute, reset itself to the menctioned HC.
I've downloaded and tried the same file several times with different scenarios. I even restored factory defaults via settings->privacy menu. All without success.
I found that the reset method menctioned here (power button + volume up) doesn't work for me: and as soon as it boot into recovery mode (a small console at top left with some text lines and an android with gears working) I get the warning sign with the exclamation point again and after a minute, it goes back into HC.
Any ideas on how to fix it to try the upgrade to ICS again?
I made some progress
I found that the power buttom + volumen up is for entering into recovery mode, which doesn't work in my case. I also found a hard reset method: power buttom + volume down + moving the lock switch while booting. It gives me similar results to settings->privacy->restore factory settings. Now I'm shure my bootloader is working fine.
So the question turns into: what can I do to make my tablet take the OTA upgrade from 3.2.1 GEN2 to 4.0.3 GEN2?
Thanks

Downgrade to GEN1.. and then go to ICS...it would help. In Acer's own words... few GEN2 builds have compatibility issues with updates...
remove root
To update you a100 you need not to be root... it happened to me and i did a full restore hc rom without root... after 2 updates ICS arrives...
good luck

Maybe, but in one hand I read that some people downgraded from 3.2.1 GEN2 to 3.2 GEN1 to receive "your device is up to date" (sort of) messages, and on the other hand, why would acer/google push an invalid/incompatible update to my device? It doesn´t make sense.
Anyways, I´ve captured the pushed OTA 2.013.02_COM_GEN2 update.zip to 041.202.01_COM_GEN2, put it on my external_sd, but it didn´t take it. So I am collecting updates.zip from over this forum, but so far 2.007.4 or 2.013.04 doesn´t work for me either.
[Update]
So, will try downloading 3.2 GEN1 1.014.08 to try later 3.2.1 GEN1 and finally 4.0.3 GEN1 to see if it works for me.
It seems that there may be some GEN1`s that are not getting updated.

I had the same problem. This is what I did.
Turned off the Automatically check for system updates.
Then pressed check now and that found the updates.
There is no way to flash without external_sd ?
If i enter in Recovery mode it found a update.zip (i think it's the 17mb update) and start to flash but end with error.. then.. where is the update.zip which it found ?
if i try to search update.zip by adb

You're halfway there. You can download the ICS one I grabbed during the OTA after the mini update. I have both here the mini update and the ICS one.

I have a gen 2 and I'm rooted with stock ROM. I just got the OTA update message. Haven't updated though.
Does anyone know if I update, will I lose root? I need this thing to do AdHoc wifi and that is the reason why I rooted it in the first place.

Yes. You can re-apply it as long as is HC, ICS is another stuff, WIP for what I read.
Anyways, going back to the original post:
I was able to downgrade from 3.2.1 GEN2 to 3.2 GEN1 to start over from 3.2.1 GEN1 to a newer 3.2.1 GEN1, and finally to ICS PA_CA GEN1. It was all OTA. Sweet, until it boot the new OS. Now I don´t have spanish GUI, only Canadian English & French as well as something I think means Chinese (2).
How do I add a new language support to ICS?, and
Anyone found how to root ICS? (which problably I will need).
Im running Acer_A100_2007. 02_COM_GEN2, and just got back notification of a 227 mb update. Downloaded, installed, but mid way through the screen with the green android logo with the turning gears, it rebooted. But it rebooted into this version of HC (to be honest, I'm not sure if it was a different version before), and it says I'm up to date...
Did i just fail my ics update too, or did acer release a huge HC update?
Hi,
Finaly, i have ICS but not without issue :
I was on 2.013.03_PA_CA and each time i downloaded ICS (don't remember the version but it was a PA_CA with 192.56 Mo or something like) the procedure fails at about 25%.
After 6 or 7 failure i decided to downgrade to HC GEN1 (don't remember the version) and i continued to upgrade my A100 until ICS.
And all was without issue. Now i have ICS ACER_AV041_A100_1.017.00_PA_CA
I think PA_CA is linked to the serial number ( like IMEI for my phone P970 : LG give me only update from my GSM provider)
In fine, thanks to the forum for helping me.

I don´t think so. My unit was originally a COM_GEN2. I switched into a GEN1, and in the end I was also given the PA_CA upgrade. So what I see is Acer/google are giving us differential upgrade files based upon the original firmware, and that lead us in one direction or another (some working some not, BTW).

You will lose root but you can reroot using the ICS rooting method by ZeroNull in the dev section. I've rooted all the ICS this way including the leaked 9,12,14 and the official OTA. I've also been able to go back and forth to any version even to HC (requires hard reset) by doing the manual flash.

How to Force the OTA?

I feel like a moron because mine hasn't updated automatically from 4.4.4. Any way to force the Lollipop update? I already checked and have the 24 wait period in effect. Thanks!
Happened to me as well. Go into settings, time and date, uncheck the automatic date/time function and move the date 1 day ahead. I would reboot the phone just in case, and check it again.

Weird - just did all that and it still says software is up to date. Any other suggestions?
Called AT&T to see if they could push Lollipop to my device. No dice. Tried the "move ahead one calendar day" trick, but it didn't work. Now it shows that I can't check again for 702 hours. Ha! Any other suggestions? Maybe it just hadn't rolled out to everyone yet. I'm in Chicago, if that matters.
If you don't have an issue wiping your data then you can use the stock Odin file in the general sub to flash it back to stock and update again.
I had my wife's phone updated with a push from AT&T. She had the same issue. They have to file a ti let and tech department did it but took a few days.

I haven't really messed around with root stuff in a while, but I know even without root we used to be able to download the update, put it in the root or the SD card and rename it update.zip . Does this not work anymore? I really thought there would be a way to force the update somehow..

That would work if someone has captured the zip file or the download URL, which no one has done. Virtually every 5.0.1 related thread has someone asking for this, with the same response. No one has it, and if they did, it would be available in a stickied post.
Oh the woes of waiting for updates lol.
I remember with my OG moto droid waiting for 2.1 lol.
And how 2.2 blew my mind. Now look at it.
i had to flash oem kitkat to my att note 4, which right after the flash immediately got lollipop.
if you do got to the Samsung kiosk have them re-flash kitkat. then the download for lollipop will update after setup.
Force update to marshmallow?
Hi, absolute idiot when it comes to stuff like this.
So, i was searching through my apps list when i noticed AT&T software update.
I dont need any AT&T applications as i am in Australia and do not have AT&T.
i have tried to force an update by following the clearing data and force stopping the Google services frame work.
tried it multiple times, nothing.
Then i thought i could disable the app of the AT&T software update, and then i fell deeper into the rabbit hole of how OSPolice got in trouble and how there is 2 versions of package disabler pro.
So here i am, stuck with 5.1.1 and i have no idea what to do.
No, i am not going to root it. This is an AT&T phone, with a bootlocker on it. If anyone, *ANYONE*, can help me solve this small issue that would be much appreciated.

I was on the PK1 yesterday, then I ODIN'd to PL1 (using Norbarb's instuctions and wiped my device in the process).
I then realized that since the device was already wiped, I simply ADB directly to QC5 (as it was already 1.5GB in size and should already contain the previous updates).
Battery life is now horrible, although I'm still trying to get used to the new features by turning off / disabling what I don't need. The update is worth it. as the theme makes me "feel" as though I got a new device. The touchwiz additions replace quite a number of third party apps that I'd have downloaded separately otherwise.

The only problem I encountered was the need to perform the large address aware fix to adb so it would sideload the S4CQB2-to-U4EQC5.zip file for me, otherwise it went fine. Just takes time. I went step by step after first backing all my stuff up. I was on an older MM release that had not been patched with any of the last 3 or 4 security patches, so I began with a complete wipe and ODIN of CPK1. Then sideloaded the rest, one at a time and switching USB debug on each time before the next update: CPK1-to-PL1, then PL1-to-CQA1, then CQA1-to-CQB2, then the final S4CQB2-to-U4EQC5. About 90 minutes maybe, a little less? I can't recall, but wasn't a big deal. It took Google longer to load my 180 apps back on at the end LOL. All the tips (like the large address fix) are in the other thread - just read it over before starting. I see we have a new update too to version QC6.... I may flash that or wait another week or two to see if more updates come out. Honestly it is running just great and I have no issues. Snappy. HTH

Hence I'll say "No, thank you" :highfive:

that's great. No matter what new model is better than elder one.

Snappy. HTH

Hello !
Please help, yesterday i try slideload with ADB from U2AOI6 to U2APB2 , i don't know how i did it, but now i have bootloop and messages " dm-verity verification failed "... " update from ADB is disabled " in downloading mode ... Is there any issue to do not loose my data. ..? If not, is the link of S4CQA1 provide here sufficient to make a full flash with odin ?

ADB sideload always wipes after it completes
There is an app named Flashify which does not wipe after applying updates but that only works on rooted phones (and you cant root the AT&T Note 5)
Therefore no, there is (currently) no way to prevent sideload wipe
Thank you very much Dezborders!
Now it will be my first time to use Odin, pleaz can you give me the link of the more stable marshmallow for you on N920A... ?

Shield Oreo

It's possible that it comes today/tomorrow at some point!!
Source: https://twitter.com/nvidiashield/status/913265527480475648
Yes, major speculating here, but usually Nvidia is very very quick with updates. SO let's all hope and pray. This COULD also be the Nvidia Spot announcement/availability.
Tomorrow 29th or today 28th. Their message is very cryptic. Google Assistant was just released for Nvidia Shield TV! Not Oreo unless they have their own announcement since Assistant one was by Google
Apparently some people are updating to Oreo already. But it looks like US only. :crying:
edit...not Oreo

Wonder if changing the language to English US will force it to work like with phones. I'll have a play about tonight.
Also...from what I understand this is Nvidia Experience 6 and not Oreo. The new launcher is not yet here for the shield.

I can confirm that Google Assistant, can be enabled by changing the language
Just got the update. But it failed to install. It downloads the update and restarts the shield, but never finishes the install. Stops at about 20% on the Android System Update Screen then restarts back to the home screen asking if I want to install the Experience 6.0 update. Is it because I'm rooted? I don't have TWRP installed but I do have superuser installed....Tried 3 times.

I always remove root then do the update. No TWRP either but it would always fail on me.

Got #root#?!
If so, well there's your problem. You can NOT update in the conventional way once your rooted. In short you'll have to first download, and use fastboot, to flash the last 5.0.x Recovery For (Chiefly Recovery, System, and Vendor), and then most likely as not do a full system reset. Which if your unfortunate to be doing this on a Pro. Will mean about roughly 2.5h's+ of downtime. Before you'll then need to worry about the latest Update.
Unfortunately I keep telling myself to never root the damned thing again. 'Cause this IS a huge PitA! but, somehow I never learn.

Alas One does NOT just remove root on the Shield. And, sadly 'cause of it. The only way I know of to be rid of it is flashing a new (Clean Recovery OS), and then factory resetting it fresh for the "New OS" to actually get written. Otherwise root seem to longer like a bad smell on the Shield.
And, now an aside...
Where is all this scuttlebutt about Oreo (Cookie), coming from?
Having done the above... (Sigh again!) I just finished wrapping up that part of the Install. When it occurred to me to check the Version... Which is still Android 7 (e.g. Nougat), so unless someones getting something I'm not. Then, this is not the Chocolate Wafer Cookie your looking for....
Which begs a different question. Why are they calling this "Experience 6..x", and not 5.x.x?

I don't know about any Oreo update, but I updated to the new release without doing any data reset. Simply boot to fastboot and flash the downloaded system.img, boot.img, and recovery.img. No need to clear data. Then in the system you can install the OTA as normal and re-root using TWRP and Magisk/SuperSu.

Can you elaborate on this? Maybe post a small guide? I am bootloader unlocked, and currently rooted, but recovery is stock. Where do I get the files you are talking about? Download, boot, and recovery img files? Thanks in advance!

I found this guide here: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/667705/-guide-how-to-update-a-rooted-nvidia-shield/
I actually found this helpful guide for updating if you are on a pro and unlocked. http://nvidiashieldzone.com/2017/10/shield-tv-pro-500gb-experience-6-0-upgrade-solution/
