[Q] USB Device Not Recognized - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good day,
I'm having problem with my DHD unable to be recognized in my Win 7 PC. I have already install HTC Sync and also tick on "Ask Me" for Connect To PC setting. I'm running on stock 3.13.707.4 ROM with S-ON and unrooted. Even restart to Fastboot my PC still unable to recognized my DHD.
From Googling it shows many Desire having USB-Brick problem, does this problem also applied to DHD? Is it my phone is hit by USB-Brick? Any guide to solve this problem? I've tried flashing older ROM via Bootloader and PD98IMG.zip but it won't allow saying something like the ROM is older version.
I just bought this used phone for about a week so I'm still not sure on how to solved this problem. any helps is much appreciated.

are you using the original cord that came with the phone? just any old usb cable won't work
also you can't flash a new rom without rooting and gaining S-OFF, you're unrooted and S-ON, that's why you get the "version is older" message

I bought the phone and it came with 1 cord (with HTC label) that can be connected to the charger, I guess there are only 1 cord for charging and connect to PC? This is the cord that I use. In addition to that I have also tried Motorola, Sony Ericsson (both also for Android phone) and Nokia cord but all can't.
The ROM is actually older version stock ROM from RUU.exe. I saw from few Desire thread they were using this method to restore the ROM to before the USB Brick condition so I thought to try it.

BUMP!
Anyone know what should I do to resolve this problem?

Are you running the very latest HTC Sync on your PC? I'm using 3.0.5606. You can get it here: http://www.htc.com/www/help/
Also, connect your phone and go into Device Manager on your PC. Check to see if you have an entry for Android USB Devices and that the phone shows up. See attached screenshot for how mine looks. This is the best place to check to see if your PC has installed the drivers correctly.
In answer to your question about the cable, yes it's the same cable that attaches to the PC or to the mains charger. I've sometimes had connection problems caused by a dodgy cable, but I've used others apart from the HTC one without issues.
Edit: Also, when you install HTC Sync it should warn you to disable Antivirus software during the installation. This can be really important! I ignored it the first time around, thinking it was just a silly precaution, and had loads of problems with the phone not being recognised. Had to uninstall, temporarily disable AV, and re-install HTC Sync. Once it has finished installing, you can turn your AV back on.

Thank you for your reply preacher6.
Yes, I'm using the latest HTC Sync, v3.0.5606, just downloaded yesterday and reinstall everything.
When my phone connected to the PC it didn't appear as Android USB Device on my Device Manager, it only appear as Unknown Device in USB Controller:
So I guess I can rule out the cable as I have tried about 4 cables already.
For the installation part, I have disable the anti virus and also running the setup program as administrator. When installing there is no problem whatsoever that crop out.
Another point is, even on Fastboot it appear as Unknown Device in the PC.

I would try to update the driver manually - right click on the Unknown device, go to "install driver" or "update driver", then browse to the "Program Files\HTC\HTC Driver" folder. See if it picks up and installs the correct driver.

I've tried manually update the driver as per your advise but it says there is no compatible driver in that folder even though androidusb.inf is in that folder.
I'm running Win 7 64bit. does the driver also work for 64bit OS?

Should do, yes, I'm on Win7 64 bit myself. There is this folder on my PC:
C:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Win7_x64
Is the unknown device present when the phone isn't connected? Just to make sure that is actually the phone - if it's still there when the phone isn't connected, it's some other device.
Otherwise try uninstalling the unknown device and then rebooting the PC, then forcing the installation of the drivers again.

The folder is same as yours.
The unknown device does not present when my DHD is not connected, so I'm certain it is the phone that appear as unknown device.
I have tried uninstalling the unknown device > reboot PC > installing the driver but it still won't install.
Another thing is, I check on the Device Manager > Unknown Device properties > Details" for it's Hardware Ids and it shows as USB\UNKNOWN. I think it should show a strings of the device id? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yep, there should be a proper device ID string, on charge mode mine shows a hardware ID of USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0CA2&REV_0226&MI_01.
At this point the best thing I can suggest is to try on another PC. If it works, your drivers are screwed up and you'll need to strip them and reinstall. But if it doesn't work on another PC, it's possible you have a hardware problem with the phone.

Hi. This thread is pretty old but I'm wondering if you ever resolved the issue? I'm having exactly the same problem with my HTC One s and I can't seem to find a solution anywhere.

I need help too (HTC Desire Z device)
Is it hardware problem? (I already purchased new system board).
For me it looks like hardware problem, because device does not accept bus address, do not show USB strings/VID/PID (Tried different cables/PCs/OSes (I have OpenSUSE linux, but phone does not connect to usb on any PC, Windows PCs even do not understand that something plugged in)).
No problems with USB-connector (checked resistance), but I do not see pull-down resistance with my tester.
But all other functions work well.
UPD. Tried to connect from FASBOOT/HBOOT/Android - the same result, device does not accept bus adress. Additionally it charges without problems, but when I connect phone to USB no pop-up/information at top bar appears.

Sorry, it looks like I explained my question wrong (I'm Russian, and English do not native to me). Let me try reformulate:
You said "Yes. Holla if you still need help" so I believe that you were able to fix "Device not recognized" problem. So I'm asking - how did you do it? Did problem was hardware or software?
For me (look at symptoms at my previous message) it looks like dead USB controller in phone. But maybe it very strange software problem (USB-controller firmware damaged)?
Did I explain it clear now?

Install the SDK on PC and update all android versions.

Well guys it was just my PC, i made a system backup for four days and that was all the problem(the USB port of my PC)

After installing and updating SDK...go into platform folder and open it. Hold mouse in field and hold shift and right click mouse. Chose "open cmd here"..that will open a cmd prompt window. In regular mode on phone, type "adb devices" should return numbers (ex: hta3829g)..if in bootloader mode, type "fastboot devices" should return numbers.
This SDK helps PC see your phone when its plugged in. Especially handy when a PC won't install drivers for your phone

UNIVERSAL in Boatloader mode not recognized by PC-USB

I tried to upgrade my rom but the process crashed. The utility mtty doesn't work because when I connect the universal, boatloader mode by the cable, to the pc, it says "USB not recognized" (sometimes when I connect the computer is frozen till I disconnect the cable of the universal)
Please, I tried to have some solutions in the forum but all the posts indicates is needed previously the usb connection.
Do you know if should be possible to run the flash of the rom in other way, for example using a serial cable connected into the miniusb of the universal, because the boatloader screen says "Serie, v.1.01"
I apprecite what you can say please, I'm really in a hole.
Try this...
Try taking out the battery for a few minutes (10-30mins) and reboot your PC then repeat upgrade process. Hope that helps. Good luck!!!
I have the same problem on my PC at work, it's caused by a poor USB chipset in the PC, or trying to connect through a USB hub.
The only thing I found that worked was to try a different PC, then it was fine...

In my case it still happening in other computers. Conclussion: some piece of the software in the universal has been lost. The screen shows "Serial" that means on some way that is opened to comunication but not USB.
My questions are:
- should be possible to put some starting software in SD and do the universal boot on it.
- do you know how to connect to the computer COM! port from the usb miniport of the Universal.
I appreciate, I was not planning to replace now the Universal...

Now works.... I still thinking windows is so stupid software made for distroy our mind ....
Solved after install drivers for a converter usb -rs232 ( I was looking for the way to connect from rs232 the universal)
I'm happy again and I promise don't try to change rom again (at least for a while)
If some person is interested in what brand of software/hardware I installed, send me a mail...

does it mean that you don't have to own any adapter, just have to install drivers for USB to RS232 adapter
if yes, where to find it?

I want to say that is running after doing some things and obviously some of it solved my problems. I made:
- unistall last version of activesync and go back to version 4.0
- delete all the applications using ports usb.
due the connection still not running (windows message: device not recognized) and because in the screen of universal I saw: "COMM1" I tried to connect from computer port rs232. By that I purchased some special cable, name: hama brand, rs232 serial, 9 pin - usb.
As you can imagine all the steps I followed were followed by the typical restart of windows. In this sense is important to say that the universal, after connect, need to do a soft reset each time (again windows....)
Other comment is that I unmark the option to connect by usb in activesync and mark the connection by com1.
and after all was done, connecting by usb the unniversal, kill wcescomm, windows said "NEw usb device, sync device". I started mtty and now appears the USB option, great! same time the screen in universal changed from comm1 to usb, more great....
and that's all.
does it mean you solve your problem using special USB 2 RS232 connector?
ZeD
PS: it was my first idea , but i still believe i can solve the problem using USB port

I think my english wording was not fine. I mean I solved my problem after install the sofware -drivers- of the rs232 connector, but connecting to the universal by usb as on standard way I was syncronizing previous the crack with activesync.
OK, where to get this driver?

I have had the same problem several times now (search the forum for the thread).
I tried three different PC's/laptops and three different USB cables all with the same error as yourself.
Eventually I got a connection but the laborious process of trying - failing, restarting windows and soft resetting the phone, trying - failing........... until it finally worked. I did nothing differently the time that it worked but the strange thing is that it has worked every time since! Maybe the USB driver the phone has a bug in it that causes it to get 'stuck' in a mode where it will no longer correctly operate but once you have managed to 'kick' it into action it seems toi then carry on working.
It was also a ROM upgrade that caused my USB phone driver to stop functioning. Maybe the fact that the phone has a slightly diffferent software configuration after the upgrade but exactly the same hardware fingerprint causes the driver to fail.
Every time that I have had this problem it is after an upgrade but once I have gotten it to work once with the new ROM, it always continues to function - until the next upgrade.

If you're stuck in bootloader mode only, visit www.buzzdev.netand look for ExitBootloader utility written by the great Buzz. Just follow his instructions or scroll thru' Universal's forum here and there for problems relating to "stuck in bootloader"
hope this helps
no device is not recognized by PC so any trying to use exitbl is not available, anyway this option was one of the first what i have tried
thanx anyway

i had the same problem with the QTEK of my principal after I upgraded his ROMs.
(after the hard reset, the pocket remained in bootloader mode).
you can solve this problem in a very simple way:
you have to launch the bootloader installation (BL1.01_RUU_UNI_V.1.2.EXE) from the PC (still connected with the PPC through USB) while the PPC is in bootloader mode (on your display you see "USB > Serial 1.01" or something like that).
then you do a SOFT reset and the pocket boot normally.
very simple.
i hope to be helpful to someone.

I have searched for so long trying to figure out what's wrong. I'm out of idea's on how to fix it, nothing will recognize my Evo.
Tried on 4 different computers, two of them running 7, one running xp, and last running vista, all say the same thing, computers not the problem.
Downloaded htc sync, disabled/enabled usb debugging, restarted the phone many times, restarted computers, and even changed the default usb connection to HDD and HTC sync.
I rooted using the idiot proof guide and used the Sprint Rom he linked in the guide. Would love some help. Thanks!

Just tried that and still not recognizing it.
Which HTC Sync did you try? I think the latest is 2.0.40
http://www.htc.com/us/support/evo-sprint/downloads/
set the EVO connection type to HTC SYNC and USB DEBUGGING ENABLED.
Assuming you've used ADB, what response you you get from
ADB DEVICES at the command prompt?
you should get something like
C:\>adb devices
adb server is out of date
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
HT05EHL10353 device
and we will know you have a good physical connection to the computers. If it doesnt show up, try a different USB cable....

Go into your computers device manager and uninstall the device and htc sync, then reinstall sync and make sure usb debugging is on then plug it in
Edit: sorry, go into the device manager with it plugged in. if its not there (should be a yellow or red triangle next to it or neat the to as a HID) them it could be your cable or phones port.

I think you need to pay closer attention to the guide, because this statement makes no sense in reference to the guide.
The guide is helping you install ADB drivers, you don't need to do anything in ADB while your phone is in recovery in that guide.
Could be wrong, but I'm still fairly certain that the guide will fix your issue, because I had the same problem.
It's as simple as you do not have the correct, or any ADB drivers, therefore your phone is not showing up as a device under ADB. Once you have the proper drivers installed, your device will show up.

You just have a different recovery. Once you are in recovery, you don't need to do anything else on your phone specifically.
Instead, connect your phone to your PC via USB if it isn't already and open up device manager on your PC and follow the rest of the guide.
Edit: Where does it say unknown device? In Device Manager?

It shows up in usb controllers instead of other devices as he shows in the guide. If i try to update the driver it just tells me it's already up to date.
>Sorry yea it does say unknown device in device manager.
Gotta bump, would really love to just fix this instead of driving 30 mins to a sprint store.
So i followed the guide for installing apb drivers, but even in recovery mode my phone still shows up as unknown device in device manager.
Ok, well I just ran into this myself on my secondary computer. Have you tried a different USB port on your PC?
My front ones were giving me unknown device, but as soon as I plugged it into one of the ports on the back of the mobo ADB showed right up in device manager.
Factory reset it and get it exchanged.I belief is the SD card failure issue.

I have the same problem and posted this question on 3 forums including the HTC support forum and nobody has been able to find the correct solution.
I know the cable and the port is good because I can connect my Samsung Moment to it and it works perfectly. On the Evo, I've downloaded the latest HTC Sync from the official HTC site, tried the one on the microsd card, checked and un-checked USB debugging, and still it doesn't connect.
The Evo won't connect to my Win 7 computer at home, Win XP at work, but it will connect to my daughters computer which is running Win XP also (all 32 bit).
I bought this Evo from Best Buy exactly 28 days ago today. Do they give you 30 days to return it, or is that only the Sprint store?
They do give u 30 day trial.go get it exchanged or...........

[ADB] Device cannot be started (Code 10)

For some odd reason, I lost adb functionality (i.e. any adb command issued receives "error: device not found"). I looked in Device Manager and noticed that MyHTC was gone! I looked at my phone and USB debugging was enabled and in charge only. I could put it in USB Drive mode and the PC would recognize it as a USB Mass Storage Device so that I could exchange and view files but no adb.
I searched and searched on this issue for hours and installed over a half a dozen "androidusb.inf" driver files several times over. Every install generated the Code 10 error where Device Manager was lacking some information from the driver file and could not start the device. I reinstalled HTC Sync and gave that a try...nothing. Downloaded USBDeview and uninstalled all HTC drivers including the HTC Android USB Device and tried again to no avail. WTF?! What else am I supposed to do?
Well, in a "what the hell, let's give it a try" kind of moment, I decided to toggle the USB debugging off and then back on (and yes, it was checked and on the whole time). WORKS!!! WHAT THE CRAP?!! MyHTC is back in Device Manager and everything is back to normal. I'm glad but irritated!
I share this story in hopes that if someone else stumbles on this problem, they will not have to go through the same headache as I did. Just thought this was odd considering how many times I have plugged and unplugged and never had any problems with adb.
Toggle USB Debugging....so simple. *rolleyes*
Same Issue
I've got the same issue on my EVO 4G. Just installed the latest CM7 and now it tell me device not recognized. If I manually install the drivers it gives me the same code 10. I can't bring up the phone as a storage device and toggling the debugging is not working. Any ideas?

Boot into recovery, with usb debugging enabled, connect to pc, it should install the drivers.
Still the same
Even when I reboot into recovery it still gives me "USB Device not recognized." I previously had MikFroyo on my phone with no problems. I'm at a loss.

You most likely have a bad cable, do you have another one you can try?
Possibility
Not at the moment but that may explain it. Still seems weird for it to just go out right as I change to CM7, but still a possibility. I am going to run and grab my other cable. Thanks for the advice.
No Luck
The new USB cable didn't fix the problem. Also, in device manager, even with the driver installed its labeled as "unknown device."
If I boot into hboot the computer recognizes it.
**update: After rebooting from the hboot, my phone is recognized by the computer however, a disk drive is not coming up in "my computer." I have USB storage turned on but Im not getting anything.**
Any help would be much appreciated!
Sad Day
Apparently the Micro USB port on the bottom of my phone is going bad... I talked with some other people who've had the same problem. HTC knows that the ports aren't very sturdy as well. Well... sad day for me.
Also if you're getting the notice from windows saying that you your device will run faster in a 2.0 usb port and you know the port is 2.0 ... chances are your port is going bad as well.
*****UPDATE*****
Flashed to MikFroyo and none of the above stated problems. I would venture that it was CM7 but apparently everyone else is able to use it so who knows.

htc keeps asking for MTP driver?

Dezire z keeps askinf for MTP drivee?? i recently flashed mexdroid rom, and in the beginning none of the usbs would connect my phone. I thought it was a nightly issue as it was based off of a nightly but now its using RC1.
Recently i played around, it wouldnt connect with the "ADB or Android phone driver." I fixed that and those work fine in Device Manager in Windows 7. However!, in device manager it KEEPS asking for MTP. i tried uninstalling, updating, everything!! and it just wont find my htc desire z.
ADB can find it when using command prompt. It can even logcat, and its weird why ADB can see it but windows cant. I have posted a Download link to the Logcat file. Im hoping anyone here can help me.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/21509455/logcat.txt
thanks
edit* i think i read somewhere Android doesnt use MTP drivers....-confused-
windows 7 can see my phone and lets me safely remove it too, but wont let me see it in my computer.
issues I was having with W7 x64 were resolved by PDANet. you might try it out, although your issue is slightly different than mine... the device was entirely unrecognizable (by adb, fastboot, the whole shebang).
edit: NOTE you don't need to actually use PDAnet, it will just locate an appropriate driver and install it for you, then you can uninstall it from your PC.. unless you want to use it, of course. pretty slick.

ive done this and it found the proper driver. "Android phone" BUT when it tries to connect with device, it says "failed to handshake with device" and proceeds to uninstall pdanet. Is it because its conflicting with windows 7 cant find the MTP driver?.... sooo confused.. never, ever had this problem
edit* after pdanet is uninstalled, the Android phone driver works fine, but MTP does not.

that's a bugger.
when you plug the phone in, in device manager, does it show as a USB mass storage device under the USB controller section? to check: unplug all usb devices (aside from input devices like keyboard/mouse/what-have-you). plug in your phone and go to device manager (right click my computer->manage->device manager). under USB controllers, check and see if there is a USB mass storage device. assuming you have disconnected any other storage media, this is your phone.
if it does:
uninstall this driver, unplug your phone, restart, plug your phone back in.
if it doesn't:
my next step (take it for what it's worth - I'm sure there's an easier way) would be to unplug all usb devices (including keyboard/mouse - anything USB related), uninstall EVERYTHING under the USB Controller submenu, then restart and plug the phone in.
W7 should automatically recognize and reinstall the USB host controllers and hubs.
edit: are you using any other USB storage devices? thumb drives, ext harddrives, etc? do they work?

Under the usb section in device manager, i have about 8 or so usb controllers and stuff. Im using a Gateway Laptop and only one thing is using a usb port--- the mouse. Thats all. So i dont really have a clue which one is my htc phone because when plugging it in and going into device manager the only devices i remember using the phone were adb, android phone, and Now MTP. If i could pinpoint which usb controller is using my phone ill uninstall it. Other than that, what else is there? This is the strangest problem ever

Have you tried the drivers from the official HTC Sync software? Also, are you actually trying to use the phone as an MTP device or as a USB mass storage device? I don't think you can use both at the same time (though I don't use this ROM so maybe things have changed). If you don't actually want the MTP functionality, I wouldn't worry about it.
Also, I noticed the notes for the ROM says "USB mounting is not working on a Windows OS computer" is a known issue. Not sure if that could be related...

windows 7 home doesnt have that script gpedit.msc
i looked all over google and it doesnt work . only pro and business versions have it.
Did the HTC Sync software not work? Also, have you tried formatting your SD card? Might be a long shot, but if it was ever used in MTP mode at one point, maybe your comp is detecting the files and thinking it's still an MTP device. Not sure if it works that way though...
Did you ever set the phone to MTP mode in the past? Like if you were ever on a Sense-based ROM. Maybe if you had it in MTP mode prior to flashing the new ROM, it stayed in it. Once again, no clue if it works that way since I've never used MTP on this phone before, but might be worth trying if you are out of options.
STILL havent fixed this MTP driver issue, have tried everything including the post above me!....NOTHING IS WORKING. why is it being recognised as mtp, when all i need is use the sd card.
this has been up for a week, seriously no one knows how to fix it?

I'm guessing it's because no one else has encountered this problem before...
So what happened when you flashed back to a Sense-based ROM? I've never used one, but I thought when you connect the phone via USB, you have to choose what kind of connection you want (e.g., HTC Sync connection vs Disk Drive). Are you saying even when you choose to connect as a drive, the phone still shows up only as an MTP device (which I'm assuming is what is used when in HTC Sync mode)?

i switched to MIUI rom where i can mount sd card, and it still shows up as MTP in device manager on windows. Its not a rom issue, its a issue with WINDOWS seeing my device as a MTP and not STorage ....stupid windows 7.

Well either Windows sees your phone as an MTP device or the phone is actually reporting itself as an MTP device (not sure how it works on phones, but typically Windows communicates with firmware on a USB device to determine its classifications).
I'm guessing you already tried this since it's one of the only threads on the G2 forum when I did a search for MTP...

*Solved* LG G3 No longer connects to PC via MTP/PTP - Only Charge-only

Hi Guys,
A weird one here for you, I'm already contemplating throwing my phone at a wall that's how long I've been trying to fix it.
I have a LG G3 D855 Gold 32gb model purchased via Kogan in Australia.
The unit is now on Android 5.0 (no updates available for 5.1+) - Software Version V20i-SEA-XX with Build number LRX21R.A1440645925.
This phone is non-rooted with stock ROM etc.
So the issue at hand, I upgraded my Win7 PC via the upgrade option to Win10 to retain my games/files etc.
Now when connecting the phone to the PC it only goes to charging mode and I am unable to click on it within the drop-down to change it to anything else.
I have tried LG G3 drivers, Googles generic drivers, ADB suite drivers. I am unable to adb find the phone, I do not have an Acer Composite device in Device Manager.
Win 10 keeps saying the device is not recognised/malfunctioned.
Tried different cords, double checked the connector on the phone for any dust specs etc.
My PC refuses to work with any driver I have thrown at it, however in each scenario with various drivers, warnings still persist in Device Manager.
Some of the drivers force the phone to connect/reconnect and cause the "ping" sound each time it disconnects and reconnects (with malfunction warning prompts).
This is on Win10 with 64bit Home edition.
I am at my wits end and can't think of anything I haven't tried beyond a factory reset of my phone (hoping not to at this stage as I'm thinking it's driver-related).
It won't let me tether or anything via USB also, same goes with USB debugging, no change.
Lastly which may also help narrow it down, with the phone plugged in BEFORE it gets to the OS, I can change between PTP/MTP and USB charge, however once the Win10 OS loads up, it disconnects/malfunctions and lists Charge Only.
And yes, this phone can connect on my Win7 small PC which I use for testing crap out on.
Any ideas guys?
Let me know if any log files or anything is required.
At this stage I am unable to do a root to the phone (due to adb issues etc) nor can I connect to the internal phone system unless I use in the in-built file explorer.
Edit: *SOLVED*
Ok so turns out the issue is, and this is just my case, my motherboard has various utilities, one of which is a USB 3.0 boost option.
When I did an upgrade to Windows 10, it somehow screwed up various programs on my PC including registry etc.
I reinstalled the particular utility (I was actually trying to fix my graphics clock etc so happy coincidence) which also re-installs the USB 3.0 Boost software which in turn has fixed my USB Ports.
So if you have a custom built PC (my Motherboard being a Rampage 4 Formula). Check the Mobo Utilities/Drivers for any conflicts.
I have the exact same problem, and I can't seem to find a solution for months now. It's really annoying and depressing

Using the drivers on that page you have advised gives the following.
Device Manager shows a Warning on it in USB controllers as "LGE Mobile USB Composite Device". It automatically "malfunctions" according to Windows 10 and I can't change the connection interface on the phone.
Going into the properties on that device in Device Manager lists the following;
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
A device which does not exist was specified.

Fixed my problem
I've had the same issue with my LG G3 in being unable to connect the device to my laptop. I'm not sure if the cause was a phone software update or the upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. Either way, I searched and fixed it tonight by installing updated drivers. Hope this helps others as well.
Hmmm, I cannot post the link! technobuzz dot net lg g3 drivers
