WTF Is On With All The "Screen Protector Recommendation" Threads? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Is it necessary to create a brand new thread asking "which screen protector should I buy" when there are THOUSANDS of threads about it already? I see at least 3-4 threads with similar titles - some of them are even on top of each other!!!
I know people are lazy to use the "SEARCH" function, but the damn top is just right infront of their face on the first page, yet they still decide to repost and expect to hear the same fcken thing all over again!!!

You've just added a pointless thread to the board making it harder for people to find what they need. Counterproductive if you ask me.

I think my point is to have similar threads consolidated. Only a senseless __ like you would think it's "easier to find" when you have 4 different threads of the same topic. First, it makes it harder for people to decide which one is more hopelful to read. Secondly, it's taking up the spaces in the first page of this sub-forum!!!

Do you think I should get the xo screen protector or a ghost armor? Thank you and God bless

So now when a user searches the forum to find the best screen protector for their phone they will see this pointless thread which will clog-up their already-clogged-search-results.
I'm not sure what point you was trying to make in posting this. It does not change the fact that there are multiple threads talking about the same thing.
Yes - me, yourself and probably others think it's rather stupid that there are so many similar threads but posting this is just adding to it.

Does anybody freaking read or search before asking all these questions???

I consider myself a noob, I'm definitely far from even being considered a dev, and I can answer half of the questions I see on this forum from RESEARCH I've done scouting around the forums and actually reading the threads. Did anybody read the sticky about before you post??? Just sayin' come on ppl, I read these things to LEARN and I'm getting tired of having to skim through all the repetitive garbage to find something new and/or useful.

isnt that a part of research?
While some days I would be inclined to agree with you...
Two things come to mind:
Isn't this post a contribution to garbage posts? Really? Yet another post that I, and everyone has to "skim through" before finding the answer we are looking for?
Lighten the f*ck up. Talk about a first world problem.
Like you've never had a hard time figuring out a new forum/technology/device/community, needed basic help, been a noob. Like we ALL have. Give the noobs some help, a kind suggestion where to get an answer, an Example of how they might have used search to find the answer, perhaps a quick Constructive response on proper forum etiquette and good form.

Like everyone else has said already if you would actually do all the searching you say you do then you would have answered your own question since what you posted has been posted/said/stated many times already. This board is meant for people to help each other out in one way or another not for A$$es like you to try to bash or say dumb things to people that are barely learning.
Points taken and true
Guess I just had to blow off some steam, I was looking for a particular thread that had some answers in it that I needed and was getting frustrated, and yes I was using the search.
I do try to help where/when I can. I was going to quote everybody but if ppl read the thread they'll see that I'm replying to everyone who posted besides myself. I'm going to go get a cup of coffee to enjoy with my humble pie now....
I tried to thank all who posted but I think I reached my limit so...Thanks
I realize this may not appease yours (or others) frustration, but sometimes people ask again because other threads pertaining to the same subject have become so huge it would take hours to search for the answer. I work full time, actually right now I work full time and a half and while I do my best to seek out existing answers I will, at times, just ask and take a chance that someone will be helpful enough to answer rather than saying "just search".
If you've ever worked in tech support then you'd understand that part of the 'job' is repetition, answering the same question, giving the same advice, over and over and over again.
Yes I agree it's good for people to look around, read up on what's out there but when threads become full of back and forth chit chat (which I tend to enjoy reading lol) it makes it harder to find the answer you are looking for, especially if you are on limited time.

Actually I generally like the back and forth also, I was using the search and couldn't tell you how many results I got, then trying o filter through them all...UGH!!! I went back to it after my little rant and eventually found what I was looking for, but again...UGH!!!
Never worked in tech. support and don't want to, though one warehouse I worked at I did become the "IT" guy everybody came to before they actually put in a help ticket.
I'm self taught through the help menus and forums in all things tech that I do so I've spent countless hours on my laptop or phone at some truck stop in BFE with a crappy wifi signal that I have to pay by the hour for or very slow data connections trying to figure things out or get some fix/rom/mod/program downloaded. Or just waiting for pages to load so I can read to find out if there's an answer there for me.
and again the humble pie was deserved and probably needed, everyone should have some on occasion, I'm not above admitting that I was wrong.

Recurring threads

Hi,
First of all...Don't kill me
Since a few weeks there is a upsurge of recurrent threads like "What is the best rom","What is the best kernel","What is the best rom for battery life",What is the best kernel for battery life" or "Help me to choose a (best) kernel/rom"...
There was this kind of topics 3/4 times a day in General and Q&A section...For me it gets boring every day the same threads.
There is not that the rom or the kernel that comes into account about battery life for example, but the settings, the usage,etc...But always (or almost) in these threads the reply is just "x kernel","xx kernel","x rom","xx rom",etc...without more detail...Makes no sense...
There are almost many answers as there are different kernel+all the different settings (CPU freq,GPU freq,undervolt,hotplug,etc...)+the rom used+your personnal settings (sync,brightness,widgets,wifi,etc...)+your use...,Etc...
Many of these threads have a dozen answers then they are forgotten and the OP never comes back and does not even give feedback...
What's the point?
With a little search in both General and Q&A section there are some recent threads, rather important (in term of number's reply) and detailed for it to be useful...
Why not post again in one of these threads to move up and continue the discussion into a central thread...
It's so complicated searched a bit, read existing threads, test by itself or form an opinion by reading other feedback?
There would be no threads regarding these question,ok no worries, but right now there are many, way too much this kind of topics...
These threads are very subjective as the answers and reflects nothing...Almost the time nothing is known of the usage/settings of the OP than the guy who answer, just a name of kernel or rom...
And nothing is says about "Best kernel/rom" or "Best battery life"...What does that mean exactly ...? Unspecified:nothing, therefore unnecessary threads...
Ok, we're here to help, advise and give notice but not 10 times a day the same thing especially that with a minimum of research and reading...there is a response...
Sorry for this topic,if it does not please->trash...
Just so everyone make an effort and you can not see all the time the same thing with the same answers when there is already threads...
And if you do not like... do not read ... This is what I do ,but when I naviguate in General or Q&A section...and when I see the titles of all these threads it bothers me to navigate through all these threads and to see new interesting topics between all of these topics to see 3/4 of interresting...
Thanks
PS:sorry for my English about some phrases.
Sticky please.
I 100% agree with you. Unfortunately it will never stop.
I made a rant similar to yours in January (see signature) and there are still 3-5 new "I bricked my phone plz help!!!!!!!!" threads a day.

@killyouridols,yes you're right...
Each gives his opinion ...Perfect,maybe someone can convince me that I'm wrong and that this multitude of threads is not a "problem" or is not annoying
I have not asked for a sticky or anything else,I just gave my opinion on something annoying for me (and maybe for others).
Of course the mods can not do everything but a central thread would not hurt, like other threads (homescreens,pictures,benchs,etc...).
And:

Use the search button on the top bar between "New Posts" and "Quick Links"
If any mod, including myself, continue to find new threads about topics that have threads already existing.
The thread will be locked with no notice and/or up to a temp BAN!!.
Mods, including myself, are not here to keep the forum organized after the fact, we need your help to keep it organized, clean and grouped.

Actually it's not the case, recurrent threads are still there and they are mushrooming ("ils poussent comme des champignons" ).
Of course already seen with my thread but a little reminder...There is less about like mine as there are those that I describe.
In this section we also see topics that have nothing to do...
Feel free to the mods to delete or lock this thread for convenience.
The answer is to refer them to a link with the proper discussion then report the thread as redundant and one of us mods will come and lock it.
Thanks

i agree with above me
The fact is, everyone that posts these "which _______ is best for battery/performance/stability" are usually quite new to this world. And they do not realize even a little bit that there is NO SINGLE answer to that question. Hell, there isn't even a round about general few answers to those questions. It is ALL COMPLETELY dependent on your use of device and the environment the device is in (i.e. Signal reception, apps on device, etc...) So much so that any other persons set up will usually NEVER give you the same results. People worry to much about finding "The best ______" and not enough about just enjoying the device AND enjoying the experience of the quest to find your OWN "perfect setup". And even when you DO find your own perfect set up, you are just going to keep wondering if there is something else that could make it better.
So what happens is they come here, and most likely they've SEEN these "which ______ is best", threads, BUT they see all the amounts of different responses and combinations without much details and decide "maybe if i ask I'll get a different answer catered to what I'm looking for" type of mind set. They are just confused as to the amount of different setups they saw in these other threads regarding a best set up since there isn't any details.
What they SHOULD come away from those threads thinking is something more along the lines of "Wow, there is so many different opinions on the best set up that i should just get to experimenting for myself" that is really all that they should do in the first place. It can be a bit intimidating to steyel into the development forum and see the multitude of roms, kernels, tweaks, that EACH have there own following of users that swear by them and it's easy to be lost on where to start. They don't realize that they can just choose a few things to flash and try them out, and then move along quite easily to another setup. They just don't realize how easy it is to just flash another ROM or kernel or whatever and just go at it. These users who post these types of threads are usually afraid of the prospect of bricking their brand new $500 device. Yes that risk is always present, but if it was something that happened very often due to a certain set up its something that you would have read about and info would be easily found on what NOT too use.
These types of threads will never go away unless as stated by the moderator above, REPORT(why is everyone SO AFRAID to press that report button??!!)and point the OP to a thread already established about the same thing. threads don't have to be vulgar/spam/etc... To warrant a report/deletion/maintenance....
So that's the Lesson of today. Be vigilant and report those threads if you want to see a cleaner forum. They will never NOT be posted, it's just the nature of people to want to be told what's best in a reply directed to them personally.
(BY THE WAY, can anyone tell me what's the best thread to read to find out what the best ROM/kernel setup is? Thankyou..../sarcasm )

Man I like this forum but don't at the same time.. I'm probably one of those guys that sometimes gives snarky responses. I really am trying to be nice and help the person find what they are looking for. That's 90% of the reason I post on here: I remember what it's like to not know much and to come to this community with very little knowledge.
That being said, I also hope people would follow the rules when posting, one of which is to search before starting a thread. I completely understand the complaints of people saying that there's too many threads on this site and it's difficult to find what you're looking for with search, but making a thread that's identical to an existing one is compounding the problem.
The way I try to help out with the problem is to take the time to write out a full response (not just give a link) and to (hopefully gently) point out that this topic has been covered and to look at the correct thread. I know Cnexus and I have been pretty good about this, although sometimes the deluge of MB1 update threads do make me a little short-tempered, and for that, I apologize.

You fine man I understand the rules and read them so I know personally to search before asking and when posting make sure its in the right section.... as far as posting links example I was referring to about smart butt links is the google one I've notice is when you click on link takes you to google it automatically writes in the question the person would ask then at bottom it would say " now was that so hard " kinda funny but smart butt to I'm its a simple question that person could of easily just said hey man look please go read the forum rules and make sure you post in the right section simple and nicely said you know
But yes it is annoying when people ask / post same stuff that's been posted already 400 times before them again people should just be nice " hey man that question / concern / opinion has been posted already please search google and forums thank you "

I know that the user is traditionally at fault (the old IT adage of PBMAC - the Problem Between Monitor and Chair), but I also think it's partially the fault of the xda app on the phone. The search function on there is so woefully inept that I have only used it once or twice (and have never found what I was looking for). On the other hand, when creating a thread on the PC, the website even gives you a list of similar threads that might help you out. There are many times where I've been creating a thread and when I put in the title, a half dozen similar threads popped up with the exact answer I was looking for. I know coding this into the android app would be difficult (if not impossible), but it must be noted that almost all of the MB1 update threads had the "sent from the XDA app..." tag at the bottom. I still tell them to search before posting, but I honestly can't blame them because of the apps search function's shortcomings.
Hi
To respond to the first part about allowing abuse...we don't. But bear in mind we have 5 milllion users, 50000 new posts a day and moderators that are constantly moving questions from the wrong section, breaking up childish nerd fights, responding to reported posts, investigating kang issues, and trying to have a job, family and life. We are not reading every post that enters XDA. We respond to reports by users. And every mod action requires several minutes of "paperwork" to document what was done.
Now to the post about searching, yup app search stinks, however if you switch to browser view there are more search options available as well as googling and adding XDA in the search parameter. The phone is quite large so searching through browser view or just with google is a lot easier than in days past.

What's frustrating is all of these rule quoters that do nothing but add to the spam. Just answer the question then point them in the right direction or just ignore the post...
There is a saying you can led a horse to water but you can't force them to drink. But if can shoot the f*cker if he is too stubborn
I know sometimes when I was new to this forum (i am not a developer), I would get irritated when posting a question and you would see a lot of "views" but no replies/posts with any help. But you have to realize (as I did), as smart as these guys are, sometimes, nobody knows the answer to your question! So posting "crickets crickets" or something else snarky to that effect won't help you get an answer either. Most people are nice enough to help and will either post a link that you may have overlooked, or a real answer (or at least acknowledge your existence)...so in that case just be patient for an answer. Alot of the times when you google search, maybe you did not type in just the right terms and didn't get the link you were looking for.

Man I like this forum but don't at the same time.. I love the fact there's so much stuff on here that's so helpful to everyone but at the same time the people on here are 50/50 meaning about 50% you are nice and do realize a beginner has to start somewhere and learn as they go and are willing to help as much as possible you also realize you were once there yourselfs mean while there's the other 50% forget they where beginners and noobs at one point and still think that everyone shouldn't ask questions and automatically think you know the answer as well as give rude and smart butt answers or links... uncalled for is about the best way to describe those answers its amazing that the admin allow these people to give rude and uncalled for comments but when someone responds with a rude or smart butt comment that person either gets a warning or banned and the other person gets nothing kind of interesting to me .... everyone should be treated fairly and evenly .. but had to say something from a lot of posts I've been reading

Ok I'm going to be the other "other" 50% whose pet peeves is when people author forum posts with little to no punctuation, commas, apostrophes, structure, periods, capitalization, etc.

as far as posting links example I was referring to about smart butt links is the google one I've notice is when you click on link takes you to google it automatically writes in the question the person would ask then at bottom it would say " now was that so hard " kinda funny but smart butt to I'm its a simple question that person could of easily just said hey man look please go read the forum rules and make sure you post in the right section simple and nicely said you know

So it bothers you that they held your hand instead of spoon feeding you the answer? Talk about first world problems... If they were really being anal about the rules then that link would take you to www.google.com and you'd be on your own for the search terms - be grateful that they held your hand as much as they did

If we just answer the question, we encourage further infractions... It would be kind of like banks taking a policy of giving money to anyone who threatens to rob the bank - we would have more robbers, not less...
Ignoring them almost inevitably leads to more noise from them, not less, so that won't fix their broken understanding of the rules...
But if we add to that spam now, there is a chance that someday, maybe it will end... It isn't likely, but I would rather have the rules on my side
I don't enable people to hide behind excuses - every search on the Internet isn't broken, they just require a little effort (almost as much effort as creating a new post, lol)

How about just showing people how well searching works and provide them proof of it's efficiency by linking them to your search results. This both; enlightens the user of search functionality, while also assisting them with their question.

Need help finding a case that...

As pictured I have broken my sceeen.
Luckily the crack is in the bezel.
My question is does anyone have suggestions on a case that would cover the crack so that I can live with the phone. If the crack were worse I would spend the $200 to get it fixed but I have an upgrade in 4 months and will probably get the Note 3 later this year. So I am looking to cover the crack with a good case so that I don't have to look at it.
Thinking about the Defender because of the belt clip (could be useful for work) but it doesn't cover the bezel as much as I would like. I am reaching out for any suggestions before I jump on buying it. Any help is appreciated.
Try the accessories thread, you'll get more responses

I own a Denfender, and you're right, it doesn't cover the bezel very well. But for your purposes, I think it would be fine. Especially if you're only holding on to it for another 4 months or so.

Thanks. But considering this is a question, it belongs in Q&A. If I were posting an accessory for other people to see it would go under accessories. See I'm one of the smart people on XDA that follows the rules.
Just leave it, ocd
Ya sucks...my s3 shattered the whole screen,, I used it all the way till I got my note 2.
This is what I had to endure. ..
Found a pretty nice "fake" Griffin Survivor case that covers most the bezel. And it comes in lime green. Think I found a winner.

Mods please move...g
Questions go in Q&A. Just because the question was answered doesn't mean it belongs in a different section. When a normal question in Q&A gets answered it doesn't get moved to General. Use common sense. Read the rules. Not being smart ***, it's the truth. That's how forums work. Feel free to report, I encourage it. I report threads daily for being in the wrong place. It won't hurt my feelings, but it's in the correct place.
Also considering the thread WAS on track with people who actually like helping other people, there is no need to keep this going and if anyone else with something useful to share has anything to say they can have the opportunity to do so.

I didn't say you posted it in the wrong forum, I simply stated that you might get better responses from people who constantly search for and talk about cases. And you're still being rude, so there's that. But whatever, as irritated as you made me I can smirk knowing that the screen crrack/karma fairy visited you.

Let it go hommie. Move on. Sorry u got all butt hurt.

Let's be nice people

Been skulking here for a few days and now that I picked up my new S4 (!!!!), I'll be here alot (he said happily).
I'm noticing a lot of snottiness already.
It sure does ruin my experience seeing the trolls that cannot resist scolding people or just generally being snotty.
Let's set the tone early and all promise to be nice to each other.
An example that comes to mind are the people who can't resist chiding people for not doing a search first. Myself, I have had the worst luck searching but always do before posting.
Just my two cents.
One thing I hate is when people ask stupid questions that could have been answered with a simple search, sometimes just a google search would answer it. Although I'm being very nice since this is a new device and for some people this may be their first Samsung phone so I'm a little lenient right now. Anyways welcome, and I'm sure you'll love this phone.

You make my point nicely, Thanks.
You don't like someones post, you can always just ignore it. Thanks for being so lenient.
I was always taught that the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. And as I said, speaking from experience, searching doesn't always find results here.
Newbies need our help....not to be scolded, chided, attacked, or otherwise harrassed. I've seen other forums here that are ruthless. And have heard people comment that they are afraid to ask a question or apologise ahead of time lest the trolls swoop in.
This is all discussed elsewhere in the forum rules....likely under Etiquette.
Again just trying to help set the tone. If I know the answer, I'll answer. If I don't I won't. Either way, I promise to be nice.

And I speaking from experience is if you search you'll find the answer. I understand newbies need help sometimes, HELP not be held by the hand thru everything, cuz then they will never learn. We were all newbs at one point or another so if I could search and find answers without having to ask stupid questions ( and no the only stupid questions aren't the ones you don't ask) then so can others.

THANK YOU!!! I'd considered posting a thread just like this days ago. This is my first time in Tmobile, but I've been around XDA for a long time, and I've been appalled by some of the comments (consistently left by the same people). How hard is it to be nice or just abstain from commenting if you're just going to be a jerk. Thinking back many of the post that received nasty comments were or up by people with only 1-20 post on XDA. They're noobs, people, just like we once were.
Just yesterday I answered a question about having an AT&T GS4 unlocked to use on T mobile. Yes, the post should have been in the AT&T forum, and it should have been in the Q&A section at the very least. But I knew the answer and have the information with a link to the appropriate thread. Kindly.
On a happier note, how awesome is this phone?!
OK, I'll bite only because this is my thread.
What gives you or anyone else the right to scold people?
Read the rules. It is explicitly said that trolling is not cool. And attacking people because their post does not meet your criteria is trolling.
And it makes you look bad.
@eflip88, I am not directing this directly at you. No disrespect intended. I asked for input. I appreciate the discourse.
I was speaking generally, at the people who DO feel the need to be jerks. Not at you or your actions. Although your reply summed it up nicely.

Most of the time it takes less keystrokes to answer a question than to give someone a hard time. So it is usually more productive to be nice as well. ha ha
Peace.

There's just certain people that have an obsessive need for conflict...It doesn't matter whether it's the internet or anything else they do..They'll always look for the worst way to handle something.....Your best bet is to just ignore them and move on...They want you to respond, That's the point..To fuel their misery...It sucks to see but it's never going to stop..especially when they have a computer screen to feel 9ft tall behind..
The worst is when people actually write out some long reply about searching instead of freaking linking the person to the relevant post, so annoying....
I have been on XDA long enough to know that people always want instant gratification to their needs. It is like they are entitled to it. Instead of searching like the way forums are meant to be. Day after day, they kept posting the same freaking question. There are community members who participate in these forums, and there are leechers who just come for the information and leave as quickly once they got what they wanted. These leechers usually dont even search the forums for answers, they just ask questions that have been answered like more than 20x (literally). We can be nice up to a point, but after that, you gotta take out the broom to sweep them away. Sometime it is better not to have than to have.

Well attacking someone doesn't constitute as trolling but is certainly against the rules either way.
If I see that someone has asked a question which can easily be found via a search, I will give the user the answer and mention that it was easily found by SEARCHING and that they'll have more luck finding things if they actually search first. <-- As you can see, it gets the point across that they should search but does so in a friendly manner.
If, however, I see that the same person is constantly asking questions which require extremely little effort to find the answer, I'll change my response to something like "Here's a great idea BUT it's quite revolutionary and might be a bit shocking at first.
Try using the search feature this site has provided us with.
I told you it was shocking. It's fine though because once you've got used to the idea, you'll realise that I'm actually correct in what I'm saying and you will then begin to search for answers (otherwise you might find yet another really shocking post).
Normally I wouldn't respond like this but this isn't exactly the first time you've asked a question which would only take a few seconds of searching. Whenever you have a question, you don't even think of searching. You just come straight out and ask it, without taking into consideration how dumb it could possibly make you look.
Believe it or not, this is a DEVELOPMENT site. Not a childcare site. Not a help desk. A development site. Are questions allowed here? Certainly but no one is here to hold your hand and give you all the answers. We also expect some work from you aswell. Even if that's simply searching before you post and actually paying attention to what you read, that's good enough.
You start doing that and then I can start to help you if you have any real problems." <-- This is not so friendly but well deserved and there's nothing wrong with this response in the slightest. It's very rare I'll make a post like this but when I do it's really effective and the user ends up becoming a better member because of it.
I totally agree with your intentions though and hope a better attitude can ensue across the entirety of XDA so that it can become a friendlier place to be
