HTC Incredible stuck in boot - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone!
Today my friend tried to flash his Incredible. As it'd been supposed to be , the flashing process got something wrong.
So, now the phone stucks in the boot screen.
I can enter HBoot, but I can't enter recovery mode (it takes me to the bootscreen again), can't factory reset it and etc.
Does anybody has any solution?
I'll be really greatful for any help!
Thanx everyone!
Will wait for your replies

Probably bricked and might need a new one. You can try to relock it and then unlock it again.

Are you getting the 5 vibrations of death? If so, it's probably fixable.

What specific steps did they do to get stuck on the splash screen? In hboot, does it read s-on or s-off?

Try boot it while it is plugged into your computer via USB. If it works, the fix is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1110865

First if your s-off i would flash cw recovery thru hboot and then see if you can access it. If you can wipe everything in mounts and storage, and then flash your rom. If you still cant get into recovery, i would flash an ruu thru hboot and then see if you can boot. If you can then flash cw recovery and the su binary and you should be running and rooted again. If you are s-on and on android 2.3.4 you will need to follow this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306400) to regain s-off.

Possibly Bricked Phone

I have been using a CM 7 RC0 nightly since it came out with no problems. I have been updating about once a week. I had a single nightly on for the last week and I hadn't updated it because everything was working fine. I had my phone charging at my desk and out of nowhere it rebooted. I wasn't using it when it rebooted. On reboot it got stuck on the HTC Incredible screen. It will not boot to recovery or boot to the OS. I can get to HBoot and flash various updates but the phone still won't load. What are my next steps? Is it bricked/broke?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Have you tried going into recovery from hboot?
Also, have you tried flashing the stock ROM from hboot?
I have. When I go to recovery from hboot it does the same thing. Hangs on the HTC Incredible screen.
Flashing the stock ROM went through the flashing process (showed a progress bar and went through the steps) and appeared to succeed but the phone still did the same thing: displayed the white HTC Incredible screen...indefinitely.
if the screen has anything on it, its not bricked. dont worry - there is a sticky on the forum that should be able to help you. just get into recovery (if you cant, then flash recovery file in hboot first) then flash a stock rom.
brick is when you damage the radio or cant even get anything on the screen. everything else (pretty much) can be solved.

try flashing hboot .92, then cwr 2.5.1.2 (i am sure that works for both slcd and amoled screens - not sure which screen you have), then flash the stock rom. if that does not work then it might be something hardware related that might require some other fix.
be careful about flashing new hboot. pls read the stickies at the top.
Okay, I can flash hboot .92, at least I think I can. It does some work and then prompts me to reboot. When I reboot it goes back to the white screen. How do I put Clockwork on there? Unrevoked won't connect to the phone and I can't get into recovery to flash anything. Is there instructions for installing Clockwork without Unrevoked?
Have you tried flashing an RUU?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I downloaded an RUU and it was an exe. How do I flash an RUU from hboot? I cannot get to recovery.
RUU
You actually run the RUU via your PC, it's installed like any other program. Hook your DINC up via usb and follow the on screen prompts.

[Q] Flashing recovery image by ADB - how to?

Hi folks,
For some reason my Amon Ra recovery is now refusing to flash zip files and it look as if I'll have to reflash the recovery itself. Can I do this via ADB on an S-ON phone, and if so, how? If not, is there an alternative method? Unrevoked isn't working at this point as I have already wiped my old ROM.
Background: I think I b*ggered the recovery by having the USB cable connected at boot time. There is a mention somewhere of Clockwork mod misbehaving in these circumstances, and I think the same may apply to AR. The phone will boot into AR, but AR won't load/flash any zip files.
Please help!
Via ADB? No.
S-ON? No.
You have to be s-off to flash another recovery via FASTBOOT.
Try taking out the battery and re-enter AmonRA, see if that works. Also what error you get?
Thanks Davebugyl!
Sorry, no joy. There is no error at all, just AR refusing to flash the zip. I've had this once or twice before, and usually by shutting the phone down and restarting I got AR to work again. Not now.
I'm happy to S-OFF the phone with Alpharev, only I'm not sure you can do that with no ROM installed. Any thoughts?
Well the phone must be booted to use AlphaRev's S-OFF method. Do you have any nandroid backups? You can use one to boot up, then S-OFF.
If not, then the only thing what comes to my mind is to flash a RUU and root/S-OFF again.
I have a nand backup but I can't get it to boot. Can you flash an RUU to an S-ON phone or would you need a Goldcard for that - which I don't have..
If you are unlocked (HTC_WWE) - then it should go without a goldcard.
Alternative solution in second link:

http://www.nexusoneforum.net/forum/nexus-one-development-hacking/644-super-noob-guide-unlocking-bootloader-modacos-rom-amon_ras-recovery.html
The latest is for the Nexus one, but should be working on the Desire.
Many thanks for your help! Will try that shortly, and let you know how it went. The phone was a German T-Mob when I bought it but it's not locked to any network (I bought it and am using it in Switzerland). Fingers crossed!
Update: I found an old Nand backup which did work, and successfully re-rooted with Unrevoked to install a fresh copy of Clockwork recovery, and went S-OFF with Alpharev. Great stuff, ŧhanks for your advice!!

[NEED HELP] Hopefully not bricked HTC Incredible with wrong ROM

Guys, please help!! Yesterday I was so hungry for some ice cream sandwich, that I accidentally tried to flash a rom for HTC Incredible S onto my HTC Incredible! Only after the install failed (used Rom Manager, and when it rebooted, it was saying something about missing pb31img.nmh or some weird extension like that) did i realize what i have done. However my phone was pretty much functional at that point. I tried booting into hboot and doing recovery, but whenever i selected any of the hboot options (clear storage, recovery, factory reset), it would just reboot back into hboot. But at this point i was still able to boot into my phone. I tried backing up from saved images using Rom Manager, but when it rebooted, it always gave the pb31img message. Then it just froze. When i pulled the battery and plugged it back in, the phone just got stuck at the HTC Incredible white screen and would not boot. I've been searching the forums long and hard, but it seems all solutions assume i need to be able to boot into the phone, or to be able to simply use hboot to recover. None of these seem to be viable options for me at the moment. Please help with any suggestions as I wanted to wait for the Tegra 3 phones to come out before upgrading!!
fastboot and adb require phone to be able to boot. my phone does not boot into anything besides hboot. and even in hboot, none of the functions work. i was able to format my sd card and copy an img of the proper rom on there, and when i go to hboot->fastboot, it says "loading pb31img.zip" and shows the blue status bar, then says parsing "pb31img.zip" but that takes a second and then it just goes back to the hboot screen without installing anything!! does this mean i'm totally SOL now?
You can use fastboot to flash a stock image. You do not need to be able to boot to use fastboot, fastboot is thru hboot.
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Fastboot#Fastboot_Commands
However if you can get into hboot (the screen with the PB31IMG.zip message), then you can just do an ruu thru hboot. It sounds like your missing or have a corrupt boot image. You need to download the PB31IMG.zip ruu file from here (http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=22), place it on your sdcard in no folders and then reboot thr phone. Hboot will find the file and prompt you to press vol up to update. Once thats done press vol up to reboot. Your phone should boot now. You will have to reroot if you want.

OMG!!! Thank you soooo much! I can't give you enough thanks, you have no idea! I don't know why this one worked and lots of other cwm img files and rom img files didn't though! And i tried using the fastboot command through the terminal from the computer to flash this same RUU file, but it was giving me problems. But when i put it on the sd card, it worked right away. Now i have a phone to wait out for the Tegra 3!
Glad i could help.
Everything I have read so far says NOT to do any of that through a ROM manager. Could that be why his attempts to install a stock recovery failed?
This really helped me in my situation. I think I had an old version of clockworkmod on my Incredible and it wouldn't let me flash things correctly so it got me stuck in a bootloop but than I flashed the Froyo RUU PB31IMG.zip in hboot and it got my phone working again. Now time to re-root. (I chose Froyo because if you want to re-root with gingerbread you have to downgrade to Froyo which is a hassle)
Your device can not really be bricked. Impossible if you know what you are doing . Revert back to old rom after booting into recovery or choose a simpler from.

If you are s-off it does not matter whether you use the froyo or gingerbread ruu. That is the whole point of getting s-off, so that if an ota or anything else for that matter replaces the custom recovery with the stock recovery, you will still be s-off allowing you to flash the custom recovery right back without having to do all that unrevoked stuff again.

If your bootloader is unlocked, just fastboot flash cwm recovery, flash su thru recovery, then do a full wipe and install a rom.
Thanks for your reply. I have tried that and it didn't work. Pardon my ignorance but I downloaded cwm recovery and renamed to the zip and flashed with ad card, formatted fat32. Recognized and went thru with the blue bar, the parsed after that it did not attempt to reboot, but went back to regular screen? Did I miss something. I was forced to get another phone cuz my dincs been down Went with the rezound but really want my dinc fixed. Thanks so much for any advice I can get.

[Q] my dhd only got bootloader menu

hello 2 all!
i´ve searched since 4 days but got no luck so far..
i was on IceColdSandwich 7.4 test7.1. i have had the latest radio and 4ext newest version as recovery..
then my phone freezed. i took out the battery and rebooted. the phone stucked at green htc logo. i rebooted again to restore my nandroid backup. full wipe, flash succesfull but no luck at boot. still the same.
now when i boot my phone and go to the bootloader menu, it shows this..
ace pvt eng s-off
hboot-0.85.2007 (pd9810000)
microp-0438
radio-26.14.04.28_m
emmc-boot
any try to flash a new recovery or something elase via fastboot goes wrong and my phone seems to be "dead"
someone here who can guide my through my problem?
if more info is needed, please post
You tried flashing a new recovery via adb? Your recovery is still working though right? I doubt you'll need to flash a new recovery then. Try running the superwipe function in 4ext and then restore the nandroid backup. Also, if you don't restore the backup and just flash a new ROM instead, does it boot?

i can´t do anything at all. only boot into bootloader and choose fastboot. but nothing happens if i choose recovery. then the phone reboots and stuck at htc logo. i guess my phone "is completely naked"..
even updating through original ruu stucked at 20% "waiting for bootloader" or "update booting"
you say you tried to flash recovery via fastboot. maybe pd98img would work...
Yes. There is a thread somewhere in the development forum which has a link to download the stock ROM in PD98IMG.zip form. Search in all threads with 'RUU' in their title. That's the only type of file you can flash in fastboot. Only stock ROMs and radios work that way. Download that file, put it in the root of your SD card, boot into bootloader and wait. It'll detect it itself and ask if you want to flash it. That should work. You'll be back to stock though and will have to root and s-off again.
