Okay, YES I know this is on the limit for this sub-forum, but give me a minute to explain...
1. I have no Desire experience, hang out in the Nexus forums myself
2. I have an S-OFF Desire at the moment
3. I have no idea if this is commonly available or even useful
4. I SEARCHED (want the list: "s-off", "s-on", "unlocked bootloader", "bootloader", "unlocked H-BOOT", "H-BOOT", "is this worth my time", etc)
...and I only want relevant attention for 12 hours or so...
So, mods and peeps, bear with me... either please politely say "no" and close the thread or say "yes" and pm me.

Just the android text with slight shimmer... nothing too exciting...
Had a look at the post... nothing new I'm afraid...
Without know to much about it, i might think you need to use dump_image to dump the address block of the spl.
The nand architecture address layout might already be known.

It's short for security off. A hboot with s-off will allow us to flash and boot custom images trough fastboot. Fastboot can be accessed by booting the phone while holding down the back key. Hboot is the second deepest partition on an Android phone, only beaten by the radio, radio bootloader is almost never used flashing from.
Things it can do for us... the most important command in fastboot is the boot command. It's not really helpful for end users, but developers can use it to boot their custom images before flashing to see if it works with the phone without risking anything. Since it's deeper than recovery it may give us write access to the system partition while normal booted (?). Hboot is also often called SPL (maybe not on desire, but at least on other devices), a hboot with security disabled is often called engineering's SPL.
My knowledge on this is mainly based on other devices. Some may be wrong or misleading. If anyone sees something wrong, please let me know.
I think its not the problem to extract the spl and patch it to s-off the problem is to flash it (it must be signed) or the SPL partition is r/o there some German users that ere very near to System r/w just wait they will post it!
This has nothing to do with hboot. His CID is most likely set to supercid, eg 11111111.
S-off allows non-signature rom flashing, full rw nand access.

So, it seems this is indeed relevant for this sub-forum so I'll reply here rather than via pm.
Where I am:
have root
have new radio
have fastboot access
do not have adb access
can not flash any kernels here in XDA
I'm not a muppet and have adb working fine for my Nexus but for the life of me can not get it working on this Desire. HTC Sync does not recognise the phone as connected in any mode (Win7 & XP). I've used the Google and HTC drivers. I've used driver tools to remove the registry entries and reconnect phone, no joy. Although I do get "HTC Android Phone USB Disk".
I can't flash a kernel via a recovery .zip. In fact, even if I flash a rom from here on XDA the kernel fails to install. Bad block are reported on the boot partition which I realise is common. This does however mean that if I install a custom kernel to get a dump it will have to be VERY small.
I've had a few questions asking if I'm willing to dump it. Well, of course I am, that's why I posted...

since my homebutton doesnt work anymore i wanted to make use of my warranty and send in the device. Problem is: it was t-mobile branded, so i had to s-off the device and use those custom installations (with the slcd installer and the OTA update i had to rename to update.zip. got the tutorial from a german site whose admin is known for helping with desire problems and stuff)
i follwed the instructions 1:1 but it somehow didnt work properly
Problem: My device is stuck on a certain screen and wont boot anything anymore.
The screen: HTC logo in the middle, triangles with ! in every corner
absolutely no reaction to any keypresses, the only thing that produces some kind of reaction is plugging and unplugging the usb cable, which gives me a screen similar to the bootloader screen that says:

ive googled for hours now but dont find anything particular (especially since there are so many different desires out there today and t-mobile doesnt seem to like people to get a hand on their newe RUUs, or do they?)
i found the austrian RUU on t-mobile.at though i read on some german sites that this wont work on my device (maybe brick it even more?)
on shipped-roms.com there is a UK t-mob RUU, though i dont know whether this is 2.2 (since 2.1 doesnt have SLCD drivers) so im not sure whether to flash this one either
Can i even use a RUU at this point?

I think it is an UK ROM, so no German/Austrian one.
I found an thread in a German forum and they have linked an Austrian t-mobile RUU for Desire SLCD: http://www.t-mobile.at/servicedownloads4you/webnwalkmanager/HTC_Desire_Froyo_Update_RUU.zip
You need to unzip the file, don't flash the ZIP on your Desire!

You MUST flash (downgrade to) Desire stock hboot before running RUU, otherwise the phone will not boot.

It's easier than it seems ...
Short: After you flashed the stock Desire hboot (see here: http://alpharev.nl/) you can run the RUU via PC.
But don't try to install the RUU.zip via recovery. Just unzip it an run the .exe.

It is a tmobile UK one, so it should be ok. I'm from Germany so I don't know the UK/GB versions.

Are you on the Bravo Stock Hboot already? If not, I suggest to flash Bravo Stock Hboot via fastbot not via PB99IMG - it is just saver.
Anyway, following the guide to unroot your Desire should be the best way to succeed

I'm on 0.93, I've never changed it, just had the Froyo update, then rooted via Unrevoked and flashed LeeDrOiD roms, cheers for all your help, I just need a little help.

Hi.
You don't need to flash any HBOOTS or HBOOT donwngrader. Since you are S-ON you can't even do this, so exclude it from your steps and continue.
It can be a conflict with your HBOOT version if the RUU you are trying to run is too old and has a smaller HBOOT version (e.g. 0.80), and it won't install properly.
I always recommend to use the latest RUU available WWE 2.29.405.5, but this is at your discretion to choose. Also make sure your phone wasn't branded, or you'll going to need a Gold Card to install the RUU.

You need a Goldcard, yes. You have a branded phone. Only unbranded don't need it.

4. Do I need a Goldcard?
If you have a recent version of the RUU for your Device, available on Shipped Roms, you dont need a goldcard. This is the usual scenario for people who purchased their Desire in Europe, and so have an unbranded Desire. All Branded Desires need a correct branded version of the RUU, and any other RUU including WWE (Worldwide English, or European) RUU will not work for them. Also if an unbranded Desire user wishes to change RUU to a branded version, he will need a Goldcard. This is because all Desires have a particular software tag in the Rom, called the InfoCID. This dictates the Region code. For Eg. An Indian Desire is branded and has InfoCID of HTC__038. When you change a RUU to different region, what you actually do is reset the InfoCID setting. Changing the InfoCID setting requires a Goldcard.
5. What is a Goldcard?
It is a normal MicroUSB card specially prepared in such a way that its Sector 0 (which normally doesnt hold anything useful) is modified, so that it signals to the HTC RUU that the InfoCID may be changed.
6. How do I create a Goldcard?
Just download this tool (Credits and All Rights by [email protected]), and run it.
7. Can you tell me more about Goldcards?

Hi you should make sure that the version ain't lower than what you have on your phone ( the version is 2.12.110.4 ), or, as I said, there will be a HBOOT conflict (if the HBOOT is lower).
Anyway I think you can give it a try without the Gold Card, since this is T-Mobile RUU, it should work, although it is recommended you make a gold card. There are lot's of threads on how to do this even without the phone.
Nothing bad will happen, besides the fact that it won't work and give you an error.

You guys mix something up here. So I think I should bring light into the darkness.
Firstly, what is a bootloader?
The bootloader is part of the phone's Firmware. It's the absolute basis (like the BIOS in computer). After turning on your phone the bootloader manages, what in which order happens.
What is a locked bootloader?
With a locked bootloader it's impossible to change the software of the phone (Hboot, ROM, recovery). This prevents inexperienced users from damaging their phones accidentally.
Why it's good to have an unlocked bootloader?
An unlocked bootloader has a big advangates (flash a different Hboot, Rom, Kernels, special scripts, backup apps, etc). And so the community (AlphaRev, Revolutionary) developed methods to unlock the bootloader. These methods also bypass the signature-check by the manufacturer (like HTC) which makes it possible to flash custom roms or hboots.
But if that signature has an encryption, it's nearly impossible to modify the bootloader in the explained way.
How works the encryption of the bootloader?
The encryption of this bootloader (digital signature) causes that only the software which corresponds with imaginings of the manufacturer (in our case HTC) because the digital signature can only be openend by one special key.
Is it really impossible to bypass this digital signature?
No. With methods like AlphaRevX can even bootloaders with this signature be unlocked. But this method does not work for much phones. Furthermore, if a phone has this type of bootloader the risk to brick the phone by attempting to unlock the bootloader is much higher.
What is the official unlock for the Bootloader by HTC?
The official unlock for the bootloader removes the encryption of the bootloader which makes it much more easier (or rather possible) to unlock the bootloader.
Do we need the unlock for the bootloader for the HTC Desire?
As far as I understand, no. Because the Desire never had an encrypted bootloader.

no. It lists all the software versions in the documentation and none of them start 3.x
Ok, I've downgraded my Desire to 2.29.405.5 (including hboot). Then checked FOTA updated and got 2.29.405.14. This is what the requirements list demands for unlocking the bootloader (unbranded, bought in EU).
The preunlock package from htcdev had two RUUs:
MarvelCT_UnlockBootLoader_APTG_1.05.709.01_RUU.exe
MarvelCT_UnlockBootLoader_CT_1.06.1401.4_RUU.exe
They had a rom.zip inside with files android-info.txt and hboot_1.04.0000.nb0.
The hboot_1.04.0000.nb0 images are same.
The APTG's android-info.txt had:
modelid: PG7623000
cidnum: HTC__621
hbootpreupdate:13
mainver: 1.05.709.01
DelCache: 1
The CT's android-info.txt had:
modelid: PG7623000
cidnum: HTCCN702
hbootpreupdate:13
mainver: 1.06.1401.4

The 2 ruus doesn't seems for the unbranded desire, but for a branded one..
Just use revolutionary.io.
With revolutionary you don't loose warranty and have full bootloader unlocked.

It should be for unbranded devices because the download link was named "HTC EU".
And actually this file (Marvel_CT.zip) is offered for many of other branded models as well as for HTC EU.
ps: the point is to apply official unlock, not a thirdparty one. It's security issue.

For security issues, then you should leave it locked.
There is no security issues with revolutionary, thousands of people did it with no issues.
With the official one you will be probably more locked than before as you can't go back.

Does annoy me when people give answers like that. I'm sure he knows that we can unlock the bootloader with other methods but that wasn't the question that this whole thread is based around.
He's curious to try the official unlocked bootloader. I'd like to see what it's like and know more about it too. This is why most of us are on these forums. We like to tweak and hack for no real reason other than curiosity

He's curious to try the official unlocked bootloader. I'd like to see what it's like and know more about it too. This is why most of us are on these forums. We like to tweak and hack for no real reason other than curiosity

heh thats exactly my thoughts too.
I know people are hesitant though due to the fact it requires a hboot update...
when I get a new phone and my current desire becomes my work phone I will try it.

people must learn to talk clearly...if he know the revolutionary method (most people don't know it at all..as every day someone ask how to root the official gb 2.3.3), he must say clearly at the first post (he should say: "I know there is revolutionary, but for curiosity i want try the htc official unlock...")
instead he said only that the htc official unlock doesn't work, so i suggest revolutionary..again he replied don't want apply revolutionary for security issue (what??)

But your post makes no sense, he clearly said he downgraded his HBOOT, so it
stands to reason he had already used one of the unlocking methods previously
or he wouldn't have been able to downgrade the HBOOt, no?

You are right, I had s-off'ed hboot by rev.io before. That's why I've downgraded everything to make the official stuff work, but no success.
I sent a request to htc support from the official site about this issue but... considering the answer I suppose they still don't know about just published unlock for desire.
What I noticed is that cidnum of my phone (HTC__203) is very different from the one in the android-info.txt file.
Well, technically it's possible to push the offered hboot image without ruu, but I'm not risking... my backup phone is no joy
seems HTC updated link to HBOOT for some devices to PB9920000_Bravo_Froyo_hboot_1.03.0003_R.exe.

I think we'll get same functionality as modern HTC models unlocking whose bootloaders was supported first. This question should go to appropriate forum but: any owner or HTC Sensation/Desire S here who unlocked the bootloader using official way? How is it compared to rev.io? Any restrictions?
i have a htc wildfire.. had unlocked my bootloader and i have super user installed on my phone. i rooted my phone to install the cyanogenmod. i used super user tool for rooting after unlocking my bootloader from htc dev website. i almost read all the stuff over xda to install cyanogenmod.
for installing the cyanogenmod i have to install the CWM.. now i tried to install it by each and every method.. each and every method is posing problems. I have my wildfire with "hBOT 1.02.000" "S ON". and it says "locked oow"...as far i am aware of this locked oow it means that i am out of warranty... is locked means that now my wildfire bootloader is again locked and i won't be able to flash the CWM.... what shoud i do .please guide me for installing CWM . i am frustrated with all the threats and i am frustrated with reading the threats all over the xda and other places..now please guide me thoroughly how to install CWM.. please don't copy and show any installation threat please...please write full method here. and please make sure that you mention each and every step clearly because i almost read each and every threat how to flash the CWM. but unable. i am ready to answer any question. treat me as new from installation point view... please do reply as soon as possible..i will wait for reply and will try anything for installing the cyanogenmd..

as far as I know the unlock method of htc dev doesn't give you s-off (which seems to be confirmed by yourself saying you're still s-on). S-on means "security on" what in other words means you won't be able to flash a custom recovery (if I'm not mistaken here).
You said that you have read every thread here about this - so you should know as it's mentioned all over this forum (that htc dev isn't the best method...). For how - and if - you still could get there I''m not too sure but you probably need to do an RUU, downgrade etc to do the suggested method (of the two corresponding threads here) instead of the htc dev thing.
But as I said: I_m not sure if you still can - probably someone has experience here?

No, no. He will be able to flash a custom recovery if he unlocked it using HTCDev, he won't, however, be able to modify the internal storage while the phone is booted.

ah, yes, thx for clearifying - so you can't get control over the partitions or what does it mean?
The htc dev method gives a different output to revo or alpha, if it says s-on with unlocked somewhere then fastboot is the only method that will work for flashing a custom recovery and although some things like the revovery partition are unlocked for flashing, some important things like radio aren't hence the s still being on........
I presume if it says s-on and locked then yes you have probably gone wrong somewhere and locked it again.
Theres not many people on here that have used the htc dev unlock tool i don't think so support might be a bit thin as we don't know much about it, try running through the htc dev unlock method again to hopefully get it unlocked again and then flash cwm by the fastboot method.

i already tried buzz downgrade a long ago.i used the method as it is told on the website..:good:
but don't know why it doesn't work properly i have no idea why this don't work either. i read number of threats regarding it and i tried to google
with the errors that came with buzz downgrade. something just goes wrong with it in the first step but it just doesn't get completed. the phone does not respond when i ran the buzz downgade utility even after installing the htc driver from the buzz downgrade itself (don't remember exactly that it is explained over the internet). i did clearly everything whatever is written in the threats about how to use the buzz downgrade but in vain i stopped it trying.
i still have the setup of buzz downgrade in my laptop.:silly:
but why it doesn't work i don't know..and you know what i read that threat too in the past.
may be it is the problem of the bootloader that it is locked..

During your procedure,did you ever achieve the S-OFF ?
You need to downgrade from 1.02.0000 to 1.01.0001 to use Revolutionary.
Try this guide.
If you want revolutionary will automatically download the recovery and install it on your phone.
After gaining S-OFF if you can't get Unrevoked working in order to gain root.
Use this or try SuperOneClick.

Try the link in my Sig, it should help. First, I recommend running an RUU and relocking your bootloader using fastboot oem lock.

this is the thing i already tried a long ago. when the wildfire was updated to 2.2 version of android ,it changed into "wildfire (buzz) 2.2.1, with HBOOT 1.01.0002"..now as the threats i read there in the past, i can't run the revolutionary or any other method. because the htc has applied some sort of lock on the new bootloader. revolutionary gave some error which i don't remember as per the threats. in the mean time nobody able to find the solution of this new 1.01.0002 bootloader unlocking. then i that time i heard of htc dev website and in that time i used that website to unlock my bootloader and alas it got unlocked and my bootloader has been changed to 1.02.000.. but now i again find that my bootloader is locked may be.. how i don;t know about that.. i tried to run that method of buzz downgrade number of times thoroughly again and again as if u read in the thread above it give some sort of error and does't do anything for me. so i asked what else i do then this , again do i need go to htc dev website to unlock bootloader ??

Let me tell you,I successfully rooted my phone after OTA 2.2 update using Revolutionary.

At the end, GoldCardTool will start up, to allow you to create a goldcard which you will need before starting Step 2
Step 2: run step2.bat from the package. This will downgrade your ROM version to HTC WWE Froyo for Wildfire (unbranded).
If you get a Customer ID error while doing this, your goldcard is not working!
Create a new goldcard and re-run step2
or follow usaff22's guide.

Power off the phone and ensure the phone is completely off. Then hold POWER + VOL-DOWN buttons together until the white HBOOT screen appears. Tell us your HBOOT info.
You are getting Customer ID error,It’s a bad Goldcard.You will have to create a new Goldcard.
>Connect it to your computer using an SD Adapter and format the card to FAT32 file system once again.
>Redownload and reextract the package.
>Follow this guide to create the Goldcard.It’s a bit more detailed.
Before doing anything download CCleaner and TFC and run them.TFC will ask you to reboot.Reboot the PC.

not really clear to me also - if I got him right he initially has been on 1.01.0002 (because of the Android update). Because there hasn't been a possibility by revolutionary yet at that time and for that bootloader he unlocked it at the htcdev site what made it 1.02.000.
But I'm a bit confused, too, so a detailed information of the fastboot screen would really help (or a pic).

As it says,your Bootloader is still LOCKED.
After using HTC dev unlock tool your HBOOT 1.01.0002 got changed to 1.02.000 while Bootloader is still locked.

after i have bought my new HTC One mini 2 i would like to go with my Desire back to the beginning.
I searched here and also on other sites for the best and simplest way. Most sites say to use the RUU.exe but i couldn't find it here http://www.htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads.
But than i found this post here on XDA that tells me not to use RUUs.
So what is the best way for me??
I want the stock ROM with no tweaks no a2sd, just the way it was when i bought it. I don't care weather there is root/s-off or not. I wanted to use my nandroid backup but it was made with an other Recovery and i don't know how to get back to it.
So in the best case i have my desire just the way it was after i rooted it. (with the stock rom from HTC but with recovery and root permission

To get complete stock then u need to use an ruu. So if ur s-on, relock ur bootloader
fastboot oem lock
Then run the ruu.
S-off, then make sure ur on stock hboot then flash the Alpharev downgrade.img then run the ruu. To get the correct ruu, google "shipped roms" then find ur device (bravo).
Or if u want it stock but rooted then look at development thread for stock roms and flash it in recovery.
If u want to restore ur old nandroid then id say u cant because u made the nandroid with different recovery. So im guessing that ur using 4ext recovery now? And im guessing when u rooted for the first time u used CWM recovery? So if thats the case, flash CWM recovery then restore nandroid.

Your descriptions are conflicting.
If you want it the way you bought it (fully stock, S-ON etc), then RUU is the proper, easiest way.
If you restore any kind of nandroid backup, then it will be rooted with whatever A2SD it had at the time, i.e. this is the way you bought it...

I thought these commands only work on Nexus devices? I've never needed to use them on the Desire anyway.
Even if the desire is S-ON, the 2.3.3 GB RUU should run without issue.

There's a whole troubleshooting guide stickied the top of Q&A dedicated to all of this. Follow it to the letter for your particular situation. Find and flash the 2.3.3 GB RUU
I always thought that when ur htc dev unlocked bootloader, then u need to relock the bootloader. I always had s-off so never tried it with the desire but with s-on with htc desire s and sensation u need to relock the bootloader first or ruu wont run, just thought it would be the same with the desire.

Guess so, depends on how / if OP unlocked the bootloader

- If he's S-ON, he could still have rooted with original unrevoked method for instance. I don't believe those fastboot commands wouldn't apply, RUU would work straight over the top
- If it's revoluationary / alpharev S-OFF, downgrader instructions as you said

Forgot bout the old unrevoked method
Black screen
Hi, I have a Desire. I used Alpharev to get S-On to install a RUU. The RUU has been installed, when it restarted the screen remained black. The phone starts,the buttons are lighted but the screen is black.
It seems to be a software problem.
Can anyone help me?

You flashed the wrong RUU
You flashed an SLCD RUU which is meant for an AMOLED device, or the other way around. In other words, it's incompatible with your screen type, which is why your screen remains black.
Look at bortak's troubleshooting guide stickied to the top of Q&A, it covers this. You will need to use the 2.3.3 GB RUU as outlined above.

wasn't 2.2.2 the latest Version for Desire??
first to clear what i did to get the s-off, root,...
I used unrevoke to get s-off, so HTC does not know what i did to my phone
I also installed a new hboot a while ago, but i think i went back to the old. SO do i need the downgrade there??
About my first recovery it was Amonra, because cwm did not work for me first. Now i have the 4ext. It's simply the best
Also it is possible i updated my radio i don't know but i think i did it. Is that a problem??

Thank you for your fast reply! I followed the instructions and my phone is like new.
Just tryed to make the hboot downgrade and it seams to work .
than i searched fro my radio in the RUU Thread and found only this one:
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00. 32U_5.11.05.27_release
So i downloaded, but it doesn't work. It says to me If you see the baclk screen with ! than all is fine and just wait. and if there is somthjing in red like it doesn't work do what ever. But my phone simply does NOTHING!!! so i can still use it and it's on my homescreen and i can see the clock,... nothing happens. so what did i wrong??

So the RUU flashed successfully, it boots into the stock ROM, but you can't navigate the screen? Do the hardware buttons work? Does it react at all?
Still recommend to use the 2.3.3 GB RUU. Even guy above with one post managed to follow the given instructions first time, find it and flash it successfully

oh no you missunderstood me. The ruu ist doing nothing. I'm still on my RSK Satelite ROM.

No, neither of those. I believe those are Froyo RUUs...try / start here instead
Forget about the radio, should flash with the RUU.
Are you actually following the instructions here and the troubleshooting guide as advised to flash the RUU...?

About the trouble shotting. it starts with problems when the smartphone has this black screen with !, but i even did not get this screen. I'll read the whole thread here again, and try to get the download working.

Try another browser.
Or try other links in the rest of the internet, it's a big place. That's not the only place to download it from.

The whole thread goes through every possibility, you find the one which applies to your situation.
The black screen is not your situation, so read the rest of the thread...

No, the disclaimer says you may not be able to send sms or mms....nowhere does it say cannot....It is just a terms and conditions disclaimer, that's it, so you can't sue HTC in the small chance that some things don't work...
I recommend it every time yes, as I have recommended it 100s of times here...just like to the guy above. It worked straight away. Evidence right here in this very thread, and has worked virutally every time for many other people if you look in Q&A...somewhere you are not looking hard enough, and / or not following instructions.
You're not the first person to try to run an RUU...

can you maybe mirror the 2.3.3 ruu for me?? i cannot download on any browser and i cannot find a mirror. I always get results for Desire HD

just found my old android development files and i downloaded the ruu to develope on it so i now have the ruu i hope it will install
