Hi All,
I know that the Nexus doesn't have Gorilla Glass, but does anyone know how scratch resistant the screen is? I have never used screen protectors, and don't really want to put one on my Nexus, but if the screen is easily scratched I might have to think about it. Any thoughts?

I have a Zagg Invisible Shield on mine. It's really nice... adds a bit of friction, but is just a minor learning curve.
I know how you feel OP. My previous two phones had Gorilla Glass I and never felt that I needed a screen protector. However, the coating on this screen does scratch fairly easily so I recommend picking one up. I just put an XO Skins screen protector on mine and I am loving it. You can't even tell it's there.
@sn0warmy: Thanks for this. When you say it scratches easily, just how easily? I tend to treat my phones pretty gently (i.e. never in the same pocket as keys etc), so do you think I still need a protector? Is the screen at all scratch resistant?

Yes, many people are getting scratches on their phones from just random dirt in their pockets.
It sucks...I've had Gorilla Glass phones in the past, that have been thrown like a baseball at cement walls that haven't scratched or chipped, not to mention never needing a screen protector.
With all my phones I have used an Otterbox Defender series while at work and a sunglass bag when off work, out and about. It works for me, I'm not too clumsy and I am fairly careful with my phone so no scratches for me. I don't know exactly why, but I dislike having to use a screen protector.
The GNex DOES HAVE fortified glass, it's just another type without the Gorilla name.

The GNex, while a great phone, does not have the gorilla glass that you've all come to know on other phones. It's bad, and your pocket might as well be sandpaper around it. Cover it up quickly with a screen protector. I speak from experience, my GSM version GNex got "mysteriously" scratched from one day to the next.
Now the question is: Which one? Zagg is leaving horizontal lines on my screen and is pissing me off, so that's out of the question.

This is all very strange to me, because I had my SGS for nearly a year, never used a case, tossed it in my handbag or hoody pocket with my keys all the time...it has no visible scratches.
I've had my Gnex since Christmas and it already has one deep scratch and also a "ding" in the glass, both of which can be felt if you run a fingernail across the defaced area. I have not been nearly as rough with it as I was with my SGS.
I know the plural of "anecdote" is not "data", but still, my Gnex now wears a screen protector, as much as I hate the bl**dy things. I'm also waiting anxiously for someone to come out with a protective case that I don't hate.

Not that Gorilla glass can't get scratches or break (I've had both situations), but from your descriptions I get the feeling, that it will take less force to damage the GNex fortified glass.
If true and if Gorilla glass is stronger, then one can only wonder why Samsung didn't use it on the GNex, like on the SGS2. Doesn't make sense to me.
Anyway, I will have to see. I hate cases and screen protection, so I will take the chance with no protection and see how it goes.
get some ghost armor, i hate screen protectors and im loving the protection from this product as so many people have had alot of scratching problems.

On the same data point, I've discovered that dry-application screen protectors are worthless on the Gnex because of the curved glass. I was afraid of the wet-application ones but I decided to try one (XO Skin) after going through 12 dry-application ones without getting a single one aligned and placed without enormous bubbles and peeling edges. I admit I suck at applying the dry ones but with the Gnex it seems pretty much impossible to do.
I consider myself to be gentle on my phones. That being said, I already have a couple small scratches in the glass that in my opinion would not have occurred with a higher grade of fortified glass. I am sure the screen curvature factors into the options they had. So what screen protector is most recommended that is invisible and does not increase friction?

I don't think there is one that's 100% drag-free, but the best one I've found is XO Skins....it doesn't have an orange peel texture, and the drag is only slight after you've broken it in a bit. When I first got mine I thought I wasn't going to be able to stand it because it was rubbery, but after two weeks of use it only feels slightly different to my SGS (which has bare GG).

Do you or do you not? I personally think its overkill. Screens are getting stronger and stronger and granted theres never going to be a 100% solution but for the time being my Folio case does a good job of protecting however inconvenient it is ;-)
I use a screen protector. While there are options for more and more durable glass, that is not a guarantee that the device you are using has it. My g2 for instance has 2 scratches on the screen and I was generally careful in my handling of it. if it is not known to be gorilla glass then i would get some form of protection, either a case of a screen protector. The thing that pushed me over the edge with the xoom is that I decided to go caseless for now. None of the cases out right now appeal to me.

I am not worried about protection as much as I am with the extreme glare and fingerprints. I had the same issue on my Samsung Captivate and Invisible Shield helped dramatically. I ordered the same for Xoom and hope it has the same results.
I have a portfolio case. Idont believe there is a need for a screen protector. Gorilla glass is strong. plus i dont believe there be casual scratches like with a phone and keys in my pocket
I think with most new devices having gorilla glass, its only precautionary to get a screen protector. I have had a droid X since release and have never had a screen protector and the screen is just like the day i got it. But we are talking about a 800.00 device, so then its not a bad idea to cover your investment.
I normally go without a case but for my Xoom I will get one just to help with the fingeprints.

once stienheil releases an anti glare/fingerprint protector I think ill make a purchase because as stated, the fingerprints are terrible on this and they don't wipe off very easy.

Though not antiglare as none were available, I did bought 3x screen protection and of course they are cheap. As soon as they arrived, I tried to carefully apply to my Xoom but I failed after every attempt which resulted in me wasting all 3. Waste of money. ="(

I would say it's overkill.
Back in those days with plastic resistive touch screen, a screen protector was necessary. But nowadays, a typical glass surface (even for non-Gorilla glass) is hard enough that it's rather hard to scratch it. If you drop your device, the glass may shatter, and screen protector is not going to help with that. And if you hit the screen hard with something sharp and strong enough to dent it, it will probably dent through the protector too. I have been using my HTC Desire without any screen protector for almost a year now, and it is still completely scratch-free.
Another reason not to use a screen protector is that they tend to be less oil- and fingerprint-proof. While Apple is the only company advertising that they have an oleophobic coating on their screens to make them more fingerprint-proof, the fact is that most glass screens has such a coating, even though it was not advertised. And most cheap screen protectors don't (can't speak for all of them, probably some more expensive ones have such coating... I don't know). I've tried some screen protectors and I found that oil and fingerprint left on the glass are much easier to remove than those left on the screen protector.
That being said, if you really really hate glossy screen, you may want to put an anti-glare type screen protector on your device. I have one on my iPad. This type of screen protector does create some sparking effect with white background, or make the texts blurry. But they don't look too bad for me, compared to the shiny glare of the iPad...
Are we sure that it uses Gorilla Glass? Ive seen a lot of people alluding to that but no actual statement, and its not on the official Corning list.
I like Steinheil as well, I've had good luck on my phones with them but they are slow to get new sizes out sometimes.
I want something only to reduce glare and fingerprints.
If installing it ends up screwing with touch sensitivity, I'll stick to stock.

When I had an iPod touch, I thought screen protectors would ruin the experience. I soon learned two things.
1. Glass is a finger print magnet.
and
2. You never know when something unexpected will come into contact with your screen. After getting a few scratches from dropping my iPod between my car seat, I decided to get a screen protector.
I got a screen protector from Verizon the day I got my Droid, and put it on right there at the counter. The metal casing of the phone is dinged up, scratched, paint is chipped, etc, but the screen is flawless.
FWIW, I've only put a Body Glove case around my EVO, but have dropped it 4-5 times (in fact, the BG case is warped at one corner after the last drop- been pretty clumsy lately ). Despite leaving my screen unprotected (and it's not GG) these 9 mos, it's still quite pristine despite all the drops and the zillions of touches (and debris, had a cold a couple of months ago!).
So. I have the silicone case (which does prevent me from using all but one iPad stand out there I tried), but no screen protector.

Funny, my Droid looks the same, with no screen protector!
I don't have a screen protector, and I don't plan on getting one. I don't have one on my og droid and I've had it since launch with no issues. Plus I can never get those things on right lol

I think the answer to this is yes unfortunately.
I haven't had it out of the house, haven't knocked it, dropped it, poked it or anything else and I already have a spot on the screen that I can't get off with Microfiber/Distilled water.
Thats pretty darn annoying.

, few days back i have noticed one noticeable scratch on the screen , strange as i am treating my Nexus very carefully.
My galaxy S which has the gorilla glass never had scratches and it is now more than 6 months old.
Little bit disappointing as it is very new phone with couple of weeks use. who know if there will be more scratches in the future!! Hope not
Just dropped mine 5ft to the pavement landed face first and the battery cover came off. It's still flawless I don't know how but it is.... I was expecting it to be cracked but I'm pretty impressed!

i used my gn with the screen film still on it for over a week until i got my screen protectors in the mail, no glass screen is unscratchable/unbreakable. there are plenty of substances around that will scratch gorilla glass (eg sand) and if even a tiny bit ends up in your pocket, better have a screen protector!
Yea my original G2x had 2 tiny micro scratches on it. Not noticable unless viewing a white background, more commonly when viewing webpages before they fully load.
The LG Updater bricked mine and got an exchange. Haven't had a problem with my new one but just goes to show.

Wise advice here, but nobody sells screen protectors for the nexus where I am. I've ordered some online and I'll be taking it to a professional to get stuck on (every time I do it I leave bubbles; yes I've watched numerous instructional videos alas I cannot do it) - I've only ordered three protectors, hopefully that is more than enough.
All the screen (even Gorilla) would have chance to get scratches...

Yeah I'm gonna have to get some too. I always take extreme care of my phones (whether in my pocket or out) and it already has a small, yet noticeable scratch on the bottom. Definitely need a ZAGG or the like

I'm tired of hearing people say even gorilla glass will scratch blah blah blah. Gorilla glass has proven to me to be infinitely more scratch proof than the glass on the Nexus. Like 100 fold over. After a while I was treating my Vibrant like it was bullet proof. Throwing it across the room, dropping it scores of times, putting it into my pocket with keys, etc etc... and to this day - "not one scratch on it", not one! For those who think sand in your pocket would scratch gorilla glass, you better think again. Obviously there will be rare occassions where it would happen but for the most part, it'll survive without any issues.
My nexus on the hand has been babied to death and less than a week into owning it, 3 scratches.
I will never, EVER buy a phone without gorilla glass again.
I've been rocking my Incredible since day one without screen protection and it's still mint. (besides a complete crack in upper right corner (in an area that is beyond the display) from one of the worse drops, which was more of a drunken throw). I really hope that the Nexus can handle my lifestyle, but sounds like this thread is reporting mixed reviews. I refuse to wear a condom so I hope I get one of the good ones...
p.s. I surf alot in the summer and sand all over but still no scratches. I guess it has to hit with the right angle and friction???

One grain of sand or salt + friction (i.e. pocket) and even the Gorilla Glass 2 on the RAZR gets scratched.
You can run a key across the screen all day long, but it only take a granule of something to etch a deep scratch.
If u get a decent screen protector and install it well (I know it ain't easy) it will look/feel as good as the naked glass, and then u dont have to worry - and in a year when u pull it off, the glass will be PERFECT. Small price to pay. The Galaxy Nexus is so thin that with a slim TPU case it's still crazy thin, and you will keep it in perfect condition

I'm sorry to say, but you should have ordered the SGP Flex instead. The Ultra Oleophobic ones don't extend to the edge of the screen, because they use the dry adhesive method, and if they went right to the edge of the curved screen they would peel.
Frankly, it looks pretty ugly having a band around the edge that's not covered. Plus, because they don't extend to the edges, it's much more noticeable if you get it off centre.
As mentioned in the other thread i have a couple of tiny scratches after 3 weeks of use and never ever putting anything else in my pocket with it. Disappointing.

Couldn't agree more. I was the same way with both my Fascinate and now my charge. Neither device has gotten a single scratch.

Sand will scratch sand will scratch sand will scratch sand. What do I mean by that? ALL glass (including Gorilla Glass and its differently arranged superficial crystalline structure) is the same molecule- SiO2 or "silica." Is there variation within silica? - yes, but minutely.
[good read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohs_scale_of_mineral_hardness Geology and Mineralogy have huge unrealized relevancy in everyday life- just like under-appreciated physics] The variation will not give silica the hardness of say, "topaz" (at 8 on the scale), but rather is usually due to impurities (additional minerals) that weaken it down to ~ 6 or so. Gorilla Glass seems to be a purified silica, maxing out at 7 hardness. Quartz crystals (what we call "sand") also usually sits at 7 (chemical weathering can both purify and contaminate depending upon the situation), and do not have to be just "sand" like beach/desert sand. Sand is a size classification, you also have "silt" which is just smaller (down to microscopic) quartz crystals, and is "aerial saltating" (airborne- carried by the air but not in solution with it). Many other minerals may be present in the "cloud" that hovers about <50' from the earth's surface due to weathering that will scratch just about anything, so "grit" is a huge issue for ANY screen. Gorilla Glass is nicer than other glass types (although according to the Vickers scale Corning uses, not by much), but it is not invincible and items that can/will scratch are much too common to be flippantly dismissed. Galaxy nexus glass is horrible, com paired to gorrila glass IMO, zagg screen cover left marks in glass, never happened with any of my high dollar other androids . I need good glass polish or cleaner Any1 no and tried a good one??? Care to share?? There not scratches more like marks from like a crayon on glass??? Not visible on clean screen bit once get dirty stands out bad??
I don't think they are actual scratches in the glass. Most likely it's the oleophobic coating being rubbed away. It happened to mine as well in my pocket.
The area without the coating will attract the grease/crud more quickly making it stand out.
If you clean the screen and breathe on it at an angle you can see exactly where it is.

yes!! Exactly,can it be fixed? My gorilla glass made phones haven't done this
Maybe your previous gorilla glass phones didn't have oleophobic coating? Not all phones have it.
I don't believe it can be fixed. Mine got rubbed off from a nylon threaded seam in my pocket. I put a screen protector on after and it isn't visible anymore.

I dont no if they did? I have quite a few, nexus one, captivate, euro gs2, at&t gs2, nexus s, in use now skyrocket and this Gn . None have done this, but coating.g being wiped off makes sense, I've been using for a week without screen protection and didn't want to put one back on, but ya I think that would make "flaw" go away cause its not visible with clean screen .... thanks for the knowledge!

I dont know that any of those phones have the coating.
I'd be careful doing any buffing or removal as it perhaps could remove more of the coating...?
The iPad has a similar oleo-phobic coating to prevent fingerprints. Many small scratches that appear on the screen are actually on the coating and not on the glass. I remember seeing a video of a guy who had had enough of the coating and so he buffed it out with a car buffer. The end result was a spotless iPad, but it would now attract fingerprints much easier than before.

Crap I use Zagg too, so the day when I take it off there's a risk the coating will come off? Last time I'm using that brand! Not to mention the orange peel effect!

Hi. I looked for previous threads but wasn't able to find any...so sorry if this is a duplicate.
I saw on the web that various opinions were around on whether the Gnex needs a screen protector. I watched the key test as well on YouTube. Can anyone confirm if this screen is good enough to not require a protector?

Obviously not scratch proof. No gorilla glass. Yes to the arguably "reinforced" glass. As long as you don't put your phone in with keys, coins, etc...you should be fine. I don't use a screen protector or case on mine and so far I only have a few nicks from light drops.

Watch out for sand, I'm pretty sure that's what scratched mine
There is no scratch proof glass on phones. Even Gorilla Glass scratches against things like sand.

Well gorilla glass is not much more than Cornings branded version of the hardened glass found on any phone including the GN. It is as resistant as any phone, but as it's still glass, it's likely that it will scratch. Personally mine has a bunch of tiny scratches(had it since launch). I bet they are caused by sand, and they are no better or worse than my previous phone with gorilla glass.
Whether you need a screen-protector is a question of whether you will be more annoyed by the protector or the tiny scratches. But it is likely that you will get tiny scratches.
My experience:
Galaxy Skyrocket with Gorilla glass: 1 1/2 years without a single scratch.
Galaxy Nexus: scratched in the first month.
Get a screen protector. These screens are pretty soft. It will easily scratch just from being in your pocket.

I've had mine for about 15 months, and I try to be careful with the phone. But try as I may, things happen. My glass is still crystal clear and free of any visible scratches, but there are multiple spots on the bezel around the glass that are scratched and pitted. I don't use any screen protectors or a case.

no it wont. just being in your pocket will NOT scratch the screen. however, if you have some sand in there or something harder than glass, it will scratch it.
i have had my phone for 14 months now, NEVER had a screen protector on it. and i JUST got my first scratch and i believe it was from a grain of sand on my thumb. i spend a LOT of time at the beach in Feb and March (live in Florida ) and its my only guess as to how it happened.
if you are careful, you should be OK without one....but getting one is probably a good idea if you are around sand a lot.

Got mine at launch, no screen protector and no major scratches. There are a couple MINOR ones but nothing that can bee seen without careful inspection. I don't abuse the phone but I also don't baby it. I have used a holster and had it in my pocket. Go naked you will be fine if you don't abuse it.

Common misconception: Gorilla glass is not scratch resistant. If anything, slightly shatterproof.

The misconception is what exactly a "scratch" is. A layer of glass is actually removed and cannot be "fixed". Anything will scratch if rubbed against an abrasive with a greater hardness.

Agreed. My comment was just to reinforce the fact that unlike popular belief, gorilla glass is not at all scratch resistant but rather shatterproof. Not so much as an entire "layer".
Hello. I just ordered a OnePlus one, and now I'm looking for the accessories.
I actually have a Note 2 with a tempered glass screen protector. The other day I've met a friend that works on the construction and he died me his Note 2 that he had been using since 6 months ago, and the screen was perfect, without a mark. He sweared that had the phone dropped several times and the screen was, as I said, perfect.
It made me think that maybe the OPO with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3, maybe it doesn't make much sense to use one of these screen protector.
What to you guys think?
Not necessary but if you want the extra protection go for it.
I personally don't use screen protectors but its ultimately up to you.
I don't usually run screen protectors but I'm glad I got one for my OPO.
After a few days of owning it I noticed some super light scratches on the bottom of the screen. This was during the brand new period of owning it and the screen had not touched anything except empty pants pocket, my fingers, and t-shirt for cleaning.
Thankfully my ozrly tempered glass protector showed up the next day, and I've been running that since. Pretty happy with it.
Tl;dr: I'd run a lot of phones naked, but not this one.
Precisely, as this is a cheap phone, and also has gorilla glass,I don't see the necessity as in a Note 3 or an iPhone...
as cheap as it is at $360, a $6 protector won't hurt your wallet

The phone is inexpensive but difficult to repair or replace. I see someone doesn't know the difference between the cost of something and how valuable something is.
I always keep my phone in a dedicated empty pocket but it always gets the random light scratch over its lifetime. A good $15-$25 glass screen keeps it looking new. That way when you pull out your device you don't look like some kind of a hobo.
The Ringke Fusion comes with a screen protector free of charge when you buy the case by the way.

All you need to scratch your screen is a grain of sand.
Are glass protectors mandatory? of corse not, otherwise they would come in the package with the phone. That said, i firmly beleave they are a "must have" for any phone, as you will regret not having one as soon as you get a scratch on it. for my xperia z2 it lasted 1 week 'till i regreted not having one, when for the first time I went "YOLO" on a phone.
You don't need a 30 dollar glass protector, I've had all kinds of brands and prices and all i have to say is that they are all the same, the only thing I insist on is rounded edges, so you don't feel it as much.
I'm on my second OPO, since I sold my first one after it fell face down, slightly tilted up, since it damaged the chrome ring on the top. When it fell, along with the dent, the glass screen protector was shattered on the top left. If you did not realize this so far, the only reason my "amazing gorilla glass" did not shatter aswell is that the protector took the hit for it (shattering to spread the energy). Gorilla glass is made to take scratches, not falls.
Finally, it is up to you. Do i think you do not need a normal plastic screen protector? well, you don't. Do you need a GLASS screen protector? after my experience my opinion can only be yes. I am currently waiting for a new one and have a crappy regular protector on.

Not absolutely necessary, but you really can scratch the phone screen.
Plastic screen protectors scratch really easy because they are plastic. So even if it protects the screen they end up looking like crap. That's where tempered glass protectors shine, it protects the screen and still looks really nice (albeit at a higher cost).
Tempered glass screen protector is never necessary until...well, until you drop the phone once on a wrong surface...

I never really believed in tempered glass, until I saw more videos on these types of ion-reinforced glass. They are definitely not indestructible. As somebody above stated, all it takes is a grain of sand for there to be a micro-scratch on the screen. It's from these nearly-invisible weaknesses that the screen will crack when exposed to force when dropped. I believe the reason is that Gorilla Glass 3 is around 6-7 on the Moh's hardness scale, which is harder than metal, which is why keys and knives don't scratch it, but not as hard as sand or rocks.
So in other words, some type of protector will prevent these micro-scratches. The question is then, plastic or tempered glass? I've always used plastic on the last dozen or so phones and tablets I've had, but even the best plastic one (Belkin) still definitely felt plastic in their friction, it wasn't as smooth as glass, and a year later, there are small scratches in it.
Yes, it's true that the OPO is cheap enough that if you smash it, it's not a huge deal, and yes, there was a screen replacement kit I saw in another thread that was $110 or something, BUT it's the time and hassle. For me, slapping on a $15 glass protector (which I found easier to apply than previous plastic protectors), is worth it.
With the OPO, I decided to try a Nilkin tempered glass protector, and it feels as smooth as the original glass, which is great if you're a power user that does alot of quick inputs. It also seems to be very resistant to scratches so far, but I don't believe it's the 9H that they stated in the ad. The downside is that it's definitely noticeably thick, you can see it from the side, and you can feel the edges next to the cutouts.
PS. I'm no expert, so take it as you will.
My screen scrathed its hairline but it did i now have a thin glass screen protector .25mm thick very thin and looks amazing $6 was shipped from china less then week

I own the iphone 5 and it too like all phones are prone to light surface scratches. Better put some protection on it
