[Q] Best optimizations for 3D gaming - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Right now I'm running FXP054 with the kernel OC'd to 1.4GHz. I also have cut down on a lot of running services in the background through the Autostarts app [ https://market.android.com/details?id=com.elsdoerfer.android.autostarts ].
What would be the best governor, I/O scheduler, & OC for the CM7.2.0 CDMA kernel?
What build.prop settings should I apply to get the most out of 3D gaming?
Any other options/settings/apps that I should be aware of for better gaming performance in general on my Xperia Play?
I'd greatly appreciate any insight. Thanks.

Download the Ram Manager pro app from the market. Use the default balance option when not gaming and use the hard gaming option when gaming.
I've tried all tweaks and zips and governors and everything possible. This application has made the biggest difference so far. Especially the lock home launcher option.

How much of a difference between that & the v6 Supercharged script in terms of performance?

Night and day. It's very difficult to give empirical evidence, so metaphors are about the best you'll get from me
V6 supercharger had zero to little effect overall. It did lock the launcher SOMETIMES, but other than that had very little effect on performance.
Ram manager pro is giving me a lot of performance and the different profiles are very clear and understandable. Unlike the vague and ambiguous settings on the supercharger.

I'll have to try that app out. How well does it do with Gameloft games? I tried Asphalt 6 last night & it ran well for a while until it decided to slow to a crawl on screen. I'm aiming to get a consistent gaming experience regardless of 2D or 3D.

That app actually doess nothing at all for the launcher.
Its the grouping shift without changing a single priority.
Its all about aggressive task killing without user input and that's it.
Use Update 9 RC4 as it has more options for high ram devices and makes recommendations based on ram.
Sounds like you used Update 8.

Thanks for the insight.

You're welcome
I really dislike it that people are being mislead into believing that it actually does something for the launcher.

I did indeed use update 8. I will give the latest a try.
You say it does nothing for the launcher but I'm seeing some fantastic results i.e the launcher literally never dies.
It had to redraw once after playing modern combat 3, and the whole phone slowed to a crawl unexpectedly for 10 seconds and then back to normal. Other than that the application has been great.
Using the script, the launcher died regardless of which setting I chose even when it said I had a "hard to kill" launcher or whatever. It would work for a while but redraws were too common. Also, all tutorials seemed based around motorola phones so I had difficulty finding what options would suit mine the best.
Regardless, I'm grateful for fantastic devs like you, and this script is undeniably innovative. Expect a donation at the end of the month
EDIT:
IGNORE EVERYTHING I SAID EARLIER, HOLY CRAP UPDATE 9 RC4 IS DAMN GOOD.
Seriously, I uninstalled Ram Manager pro, it's totally unnecessary.
Supercharger update 9 RC4 using option 6 has been flawless for me.

ah yes U9 is much improved.

What apps should be bullet-proofed? I'm using script for the purpose of getting better gaming performance.

I just uploaded an RC5 test so try that
I meant the launcher... so if you eve get any redraw, pick bulletproof launcher so it can't be killed but then again if you don't have enough ram to load big games then the default die hard launcher is good enough... it should still almost never happen.

I started using RC5-test last night. It works really well. I noticed that it now has the Cust-OOM calc settings, which I'll apply tonight & see how it runs.
I really like how well done it is. I'll have to test out a few games this week.

If you go to custOOMizer it will ask if you want to load the calculated values so that you only have to say yes or no lol

Even easier, I was thinking I would have to record the values & make sure I got it right.

Hi Zeppelin!
I would to test now Update 9 RC5. What ins the best Option for Play. On Update 8 i use Option 6 or 9 (MegaRam 2) but 6 feels smoother in the Launcher & UI.
Gesendet von meinem R800i mit Tapatalk

Test the calculated values as they are based on your actual ram.
I added that feature for device that fell between the HP group settings.
I tried to calculate balanced values but course you can tweak them to be more or less aggressive by playing with the slot 3 value as that has the biggest effect on typical free ram.
The other great addition is the auto calculated min_free_kbytes value so that you won't ever get too low on free ram while allowing for apps to be cached for speed.

Thanks for answer. I now use Option 10 Custom Settings on U9 RC5. Launcher is Die Hard.

[APP] RogueTools v1.1 - [Overclock & Change Screen Density] - [Updated: 04/27/2010]
I now present you with RogueTools v1.1.
Summary:
This application is designed for the Vogue, Kaiser, Polaris and Nike devices. It allows you to dynamically overclock your device as well as change the screen density.
Requirements:
This application requires write access to your /system so this will only work on EXT2 and NAND installations.
Overclocking Notes:
Overclocking results will vary. Based upon the beta test results everyone was able to Overclock to 500mhz and have very stable results. Above this results really were mixed. Give it a try, I'd love to hear your results.

Awesome. Can't wait to try.
Will this affect the battery life?
Right now the battery is bad enough with android, but it does sound really nice.
Nice,
will try it out
Overclocking will always effect battery life negatively. Under-clocking will increase it.
You don't always need your Kaiser running at 400 Mhz, but I think Android throttles it anyway.

I've set mine to 500 Mhz, any chanche for overheating (when going higher then 500)?
(I've deleted some .apk packages (voice dialer,...) and together with this tweak it runs really great, almost 40MB free ram whe killing all apps)
Great app. Can someone give a bit more info about the "increase screen dpi" option? When and why would I want to use this feature? What is a "good" value?

I can't say for sure since I'm not the one that developed this, but it seems to me that it should actually save your battery since it underclocks when the phone is sleeping, unless of course you're actively using it a lot while at 500mhz or more, in which case you'd use your battery quicker and run the risk of overheating. Like I said, I can't be certain, so you may want to wait for a reply from myn himself on it.

It should be set at 120dpi by default, at least it was for me. The dpi is "dots per inch," which is pretty much what it sounds like. If you make the value higher, it will make things larger. If you make it smaller, well you get the idea. I played around with it some to check it out, but I'm happy with the default dpi.
Thanks tony. I guess it could be useful for applications that do not work correctly in Kaiser's QVGA, like iGO for example. Would a lower dpi setting compensate for iGO's larger resolution design?
Reducing the DPI makes everything small so iGO might work but it will make reading everything harder.

[Q] Galaxy W RAM Management

I want to ask you guys how did you solve problems with ram on our phone, because it's the only thing i found bad. I'm using V6 supercharger on a stock rom for a while now and it is a slight improvement in smoothness but games sometimes lag. On custom roms ram management is much better but they're mostly lighter than touchwiz which is eating RAM. Is there any better solution for stock roms or that's all we got?

Not so sure, but i'm afraid so...
maybe you can try using zeam launcher on stock rom. install newest link2sd to freeze unwanted program.
Sent from my GT-I8150 using xda app-developers app
On CM9, you can enable KSM (Kernel Samepage Merging), which gives you about 15-20 MB additional usable RAM, through deduplicating memory pages.
Until Alpha 5, there were 364 MB RAM available on CM, with Alpha 6 it now decreases to 352 due to buffer/shared memory requierements from 720p recording.
OP asks about Stock ROM.....
CM9 def not Stock!!
IMHO, V6 works well on Stock GB...that's what I have, and it flies, of course along with KAK and 3G Turbocharger also from Zepp...

Right..
Although, there might be a little chance, that KSM is included in the stock kernel, one could try it by executing
echo 1 > /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/run
There are some scripts, like the Supercharger, that modifiy minfree values and OOM groupings.
You can try those, but from what i have seen of it, you jump out of the frying pan into the fire in many use cases, so i wouldn't agree to the hype around them.
However, if you got the time for some experimenting, you can give it a try.
Generally:
- Have a clean base installation (no modifications left from various "tuning runs")
- Install only the apps you really nead, with special regard to resource-intensive background apps such as Facebook, Widgets etc.
- Look out for the enhancements available in your ROM, like KSM, zRam, (normal) swapping etc.
- Don't use automatic task killers
- You might also experiment with LMK values (e.g. through the scipts mentioned) etc., althouth be aware what your focus is: multitasking, games, no launcher redraws. Many settings here are trade-offs.
There's another easy way is to install ROM toolbox from playstore. Go to performance page and use the auto memory manager. Remember this is only for rooted stock, and need to install in the internal memory not SD card. After choose the option that you want, do check apply on boot. It will work like v6 script also.

This is a good apps to define how u gonna use the system. For RAM management , please make sure u know what to run at the critical part and whats not. The best practice is to maintain usage of a few apps that will be stalled as running apps. Clear ur rams once its getting slow or when it reach 300 for instance.

Like I said, it uses a modification of my OOM grouping fix.
The priority of the launcher doesn't change it only moves the launcher down a slot.
You'd get the same effect with lower minfrees.

XDA is a site of serious development, but unfortunaly some people (visitors and members) come only here to pick ROM's and upgrades for their phones (Yes I know that YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) without even pressing thanks for the developers who made these things. We devs spent a LOT of time and effort to do these modifications to improve and perfect our phones (it doesn't matter what phone is) and we receive nothing in return. Let's change it. If you are a member, please (if you like of my, or any other developer, themer, someone in special that helped you, work), at least press thanks and give review so we can improve even more our work, and if you aren't, sign up! Yes, this is my Project. I'm now modifying somethings (build.prop, rearranging minfree values) and I've retired and added apps and other things. This was one of my best years, so to give my present to this forum, i'm spenting my time working in this rom for us!
Working:
Everything. This ROM is Bugfree. If have more, let me know.
Screenshots:
I've provided 2 benchmarks. The 1st is pure (no additional tweak) and the 2nd with Ram Manager Hard Gaming Preset.
More Screenshots is coming so stay updated =D.
Features ->
Superfaster ROM -> Tweaked, Balanced and Ready to Play!
Root Uninstaller -> Delete everything you don't need!
Balance Launcher -> Smooth, Customizable and Beautiful!
Ram Manager -> Just feel the difference!
And some apps were removed! More Internal Storage Avaliable.
Renascence Series isn't only for GB. Soon we will have it on ICS and in future JB.
Some tips to use in Balance Launcher ->
Q. Oh My GOD! The Icons are Overlapping! What i do?
A. In homescreen, press menu button and go to Customize. So you scroll down to "Application Drawer" (It has only 3 options) and tap Grid Size 3x4.
Q. I don't like of the black background on menu. I wanna see my wallpaper when i use my app drawer. What I do?
A. In homescreen, press menu button and go to Customize. So you scroll down to "Application Drawer" and tap Background Setting. Use these options to set transparency and light.
Once you're over. It'll prompt to restart the application to set the changes. Don't worry, because this application is very fast to apply settings.

Some tips to make the ROM better ->
1. I implanted Adrenaline Boost, so type sh boost on Terminal Emulator.
2. Swap and use chainfire it if you're wanting to play heavy games. When you overclock your phone, return to default frequency to save battery.
3. Get a light theme. Some themes are heavy to GPU so they drop your overall performance when used. So far i used GingerBlurB and no heavy lost of performance. Try using some themes and report here so i can guide some people to use the best on performance!
4. Use a battery saver. I recommend TrendMicro Longevity. Its 's very good and save a lot of battery.
5. Some Kernels can really drop your performance and eat battery. I recommend using an RM CAF kernel. I actually use v5 Vsync Off and is very good.
6. Do not use widgets only to make your phone beautiful. They eat performance of GPU and battery. It's the same with Live Wallpapers.
7. Try minimizing the usage of background applications. They use a LOT of RAM and makes your phone really slower.
8. Uninstall All Apps that you don't use. Before installing, check Root Uninstaller and apply my recommendation. All apps create cache and these slow down your phone giving bad performance.
9.Always use an Antivirus, especially if you use 2G/3G or wifi. Some malwares install themselves on phone and can do a series of bad things on YOUR Phone.

Something I keep installing is causing lag - how do I isolate this without trial/erro

I'm getting quite frustrated with a persistent lag issue I've been carrying across all installs. I don't know how else to describe it other than a huge input lag. I press the power button, the phone takes 2 seconds to wake up....
I press a button on the screen - sometimes 3-4 seconds before the phone reacts.
I don't know how to isolate this problem because every time I do a clean install the problem isn't there, I have over 200 apps that I just back up from a TitaniumBackup that I carry over after wiping everything including userdata/sdcard... I'm not going through the whole "remove 1 app at a time".. I have over 200 man that's too time consuming!
There's got to be a better way to figure out what is hogging the CPU or GPU or whatever IO is getting mucked up to the point that its slowing my phone down. I haven't seen an impact in battery yet which is a tad confusing, but I'm not gonna complain about it..

Any help is much appreciated

Use app settings Running Apps tab.
What would I be looking for here?
This is all I have in there - no scrolling up or down. Nothing seems out of place?

Then it isn't an app causing your lag. Or at least not one that's running.

Maybe a system UI change? I do have a lot of modded items like the center clock and such... Would these be problematic?
edit; just to try it out, I'm reverting all changes and rebooting - waiting for the phone to settle down now.
You didn't really provide any information other than what you were assuming it to be. What ROM, kernel, mods etc are you using?
Also, are you underclocking/undervolting the CPU? Might not be liking the settings

Well I was hoping for a way to diagnose the issue myself but I always welcome help as I'm at my wits end of diagnosing this problem right now lol
ROM: XenonHD Stable 2.0 JAN10 Release
Kernel: Both stock included in ROM and currently LeanKernel
Mods are mostly things from the ROM settings.. stuff like Signal text, battery text, centered clock, adding day of the week, shortcut by tapping on the time in notification bar
No external mods installed lately.

Unless the new daemon included in the ROM mentioned above is doing either of those - no. CPU scales up to 1200Mhz regularly when watching it in the performance tab
EDIT: I think I just found it... Something I must have installed is locking the CPU to 700Mhz, I just double checked to verify what I said and its not going over 700 even though the daemon is set to 1200...LOL!!!!

That'd be governor control. The hispeed frequency must've been 700.

How do I mess with this if possible? Im assuming kernel level tweaks?
I switched governor to interactiveX and I'm now seeing it jump to 920 and 1200 much more often... Seems a bit smoother but I'll have to wait and see if I get any hangs like I was before... wow I really hope it was that easy to fix lol, I just need to find the app that keeps messing w/ my CPU settings now >_>

Depends on the governor. You'll need an app like Francokernel updater.

Ok I had been using Trixter toolbox, I believe I saw settings for that while using this toolbox under another ROM
I'll have to read up on this HiSpeed thing you mentioned... It sounds like its setting a secondary artificial limit on CPU speed based on load settings similar to the way 'nice load' used to work? Its been a while since I've hit the wiki
Thank you guys very much for your help. After using it for a handful of minutes things are looking pretty damn good! Very much appreciated
After some time the lag came back even worse. I did some looking around on my own into possible hardware failures at that point and later found a possible issue with the emmc not running fstrim or just not trimming the flash memory correctly
I found an app called LagFix and ended up installing that and after a reboot it was like I had just erased everything on the phone (back to fast again).. I've been using it nice and quick for the past week now and I think that may have been the end-all issue as usually the lag would start to re-appear after a few days.

How can i keep my phone fast? Or make it faster

I'm using the pitchblack 1.3 rom android 4.2.2. It has cm 10 kernel and the rom is based off of cm10 nightly
So the kernel has min 700mhz and max 1.2ghz with 384 gpu oc. with on demand governer
With This, it is generally smooth but i want it smoother since i'm a lag freak. Like half the occasion when bringing down the notification bar it will lag. And most of the time the frames wont be totally smooth. It'll be semi choppy. And also most of the time when i unlock my phone and go to app drawer and scroll a bit, That will lag too.
So generally how do i make my phone faster?

I would suggest to increase read ahead, or try different kernel/Rom.it is also about running processes and services I guess.

Do you he any coding experience or familiarity of the android operating system? I would recommend using Android Revolution HD if you want speed and performance. Install a custom kernel onto this too and you will get a great mixture of Battery life, performance, and the features of stock android. I would flash Cylon kernel or trinity kernel with that.

Use trickster mod. Also try different kernel governors. Wheatley or a number of other governors should keep you nice and snappy.

I have tried android revolution hd ,But the thing is, it's too stock. If thatmakes sense, it doesnt have any customizability like changing quick settings and other features cyanogenmod has. Thats why i use pitch black, because also the black helps with the battery life.
any other roms?

Xylon has decent performance from what I know. Also wouldn't flashing a custom kernel remove your overdriven features?

If you prefer a lot of customization than you can try JBSourcery, or Cyber GR MOD ROM.:good:
Tweak your governor to more readily hit your max CPU frequency. The tradeoff is battery life.
this is how my cpu use looks

the 367mhz step is usually about 30% but using the dock at night keeps it there and out of deep sleep. i had to tweak the interactive governor quite a bit to get it to use the two highest steps about equally but it's super smooth and i really havent noticed too much of a battery impact. I consistently get around 2.5 - 3hrs screen time but thats on wifi.
Try stock rom

I generally want to have the customization of cyanogen mod, Mainly the notification quick settings panel and powermenu . Any other good roms? That are extremely fast and have these tweaks?
Vanir or carbon
