NOOB: Rooting and Kernal for Galaxy Nexus - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Anyone willing to give some time to write up on what I should do?
I heard that the best combination is bigxie's rom along with franco's kernel.
How do I go about doing this? Do I need to backup my kernel, firmware etc?
I really appreciate the help and am willing to reward anyone who can take me through this step-by-step.

Read the stickied post in GSM (or) CDMA Development forum that tells you how to get started.
CDMA: Verizon
GSM: Not verizon? SIM card? You have GSM.
Best combination is whatever ROM that is 4.0.3 with the features that YOU want.
AOKP or Bigxie + Franco Kernel

I personally use the old school method with fastboot oem unlock rather than that to root. But I think that one might be easier for you to use.

Backup as in what? Your apps, data? Probably not.
Unlocking the bootloader will do a complete wipe of your phone. So backup whatever you need that is important or you'll lose it.

Precisely, my apps, data.... I presume that's backed up by my Google account and is synced automatically correct?
What is a kernel?

Your apps, data are not backed up. At most it'll go to the Android Market and redownload all of them. But after you've rooted you can successfully back up all of this stuff using a handy tool named Titanium Backup. I recommend getting the pro version or you can use MyBackUp. Which does the same thing but I've never tried it.
Also, I believe "fastboot oem unlock" (unlocking bootloader) wipes your sdcard as well, so backup any important pictures or whatever you need before doing this.

Perfect! In that tool it shows me, theres different options. Should I rename Restore Files and Flash CWM Recovery?
How do I get 4.0.3? I'm on 4.0.1 right now?
Do I download Release 2.1 AOKP GSM B15.zip?

To get 4.0.3, yeah.. you need to download either:
- AOKP Milestone 2 [Have to get it from Rootzwiki.. as latest on XDA is build 15]
- Bigxie's Build 8
(Select one of them that you'd like to use)
and Franco Kernel.. it'll improve your battery life // performance.
You just need to unlock bootloader, flash clockwork recovery

AOKP: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11455-rom-android-open-kang-project-maguro-milestone-2/
Franco Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367341
And yes that is correct.
Basically once you have Clockwork Recovery up and running (black background, tealish colors).. although I don't think the link that I gave you installs Clockwork Recovery Touch Enabled (which is really cool). Basically use the volume buttons and go into:
install zip from sdcard
select
choose AOKP (this will flash it)
select again
choose franco kernel (this will flash it-- you have to do this in order)
wipe: factory, cache, (you can find these on the main menu), go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache too.. then hit go back then reboot system!
congrats you will be on 4.0.3 with a custom kernel.

So to sumarize I'm going to be using AOKP Milestone 2 with Franco's Kernal, correct? Will I be able to do this all with that tool you provided? Are you sure I should not rename the Restore Files nor glash the CWM?

Yes that is correct. And it is kernel not kernal (doesn't bother me but other people might. I don't know what that tool would be restoring as you don't have any nandroid backups present or any backups at all.
To restore something, something needs to be present to "restore."

App won't work on a non-rooted device. To be rooted, you need to unlock your bootloader. Unlocking your bootloader will fully wipe your phone as I mentioned previously.
1. Backup any important files off your device. You cannot backup apps/data. By this step I mean important files such as pictures, documents, whatever.
2. Unlock bootloader
3. Flash Clockwork Recovery
4. Flash ROM, Kernel [also wipe]
5. Reboot
6. You're on 4.0.3

You don't really need to wait for your phone to be charged, it'll charge while your phones plugged in your USB
@Post above: Yes that is correct. You'd want to do numbers: 1 & 4
Then go to 17.... boot into Android, it'll tell you to put your Google information etc etc.. skip all of it, and what you want to do now is get to the homescreens. When you're in the home screen, drag the zip of AOKP and the kernel onto the root of your sdcard (main folder). Then you can use that tool again and go to 16 (or if you manually want to... turn the phone off then hold volume up and down + power [all three] then that'll bring you to fastboot mode, press the volume rocker until you see "Recovery" when it's there.. press on the power button and it'll bring you to a screen looking like this,

I would just reflash the ROM, that will switch it back to stock.
Will this work on any of the stock zipaligned roms?

You can also just insert the systemui.apk from the main ROM in the update.zip of the mod (overwrite the systemui in this zip) and flash.
for some odd reason I could not get this to work. Just kept getting stuck at the goggle logo. Yes I downloaded the correct LTE version.

A few things, did you already accept the 4.0.2 OTA prior to flashing the ROM (you need to in order to get the new kernel and baseband)? Did you wipe dalvik and cache when you flashed the ROM? Did you check the MD5SUM to make sure the file wasn't corrupted?
Is there any way to make the search key have long press abilities? Sorry for all the questions bro lol

The issue could be that you came from 4.0.1 instead of 4.0.2 like the OP called for. I would think that the upgrade would have gone smoother than the downgrade (like if you were on 4.0.2 trying to flash a 4.0.1 ROM) but i bet you it would fix your issues just to update first to the current build OTA or you could wipe data/cache.
Hey everyone that is coming from 4.0.1, I uploaded the new kernel and radios into the 2nd post.
You can flash them in bootloader using fastboot, then reboot right into recovery to flash the ROM.
I don't suppose that you can craft a version of the soft-key mod like Paul's that has the menu button always shown? This is the only thing I have issues with in ICS - many apps (like FBReader) don't show the menu button, which makes the app useless...
Paul's patch still causes the top and bottom bar to disappear on the LTE Nexus...

My softkeys are built using the exact same mods he used in his MCR ROM.
Those menu buttons are persistent in both corners, but the three dots only show up when apps call for them.

Custom Rom Suggestion/Help

Hey Guys,
I currently have a GS3 on Rogers and am interested in getting a stock rom. The only two that I have read about are AOKP and CM10. I am not sure how to go about rooting it, or which is even better. I know I will lose the Samsung features but I think it may be worth the trade off. Just looking for some insight on how to go about doing it, which rom to use, and if problems arise, or I decide to go back to stock can I do it.
Basically:
1. What is the best stock rom
2. Is it difficult to install?
3. Can I get back to Rogers stock if I run into trouble
4. Do all the features work in stock roms?
5. Are they easy to update?

CM10 and AOKP are both good. Personally, I would roll with Task AOKP just because there are some added features I like. To get back to stock you would have to get the stock rogers firmware and use Odin to flash it, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1968625

Thanks, I am assuming this voids my warranty.
I am worried I am going to brick my phone and be SOL. Is there a step by step guide anywhere for starting from root to installing AOKP anywhere? I found different threads and videos, but they each seem to have different methods and it makes me nervous.

I was once a noob too and I sympathise. This does void warranty but you can always go back to stock completely and get your warranty back.
I found some of the guides on XDA a bit confusing when I first got into rooting/flashing roms. Please understand that a Rogers S3 is the equivalent of an AT&T S3, so whenever you download something for your S3, the specific provider you'll want to download for is AT&T. Pretty much everything that works for an AT&T S3 works for your phone (Roms, kernels, etc). After googling for a few days when I was getting into all of this, I found the most noob-proof guides:
1) First thing you want to do is root your phone. Watch the video in the link below:
http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-att-galaxy-s3-sgh-i747/
2) Next thing you want to do is watch this video to install clockworkmodrecovery:
http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-tutorials/how-to-install-clockworkmodcwm-recovery-on-galaxy-s3/
3) You'll want to make a nandroid backup of your current settings by rebooting into recovery (power off, then hold volume up + home button + power button simultaneously until phone vibrates, then let go of power button until you see the screen that says Samsung Galaxy SIII and then let go of volume up and home button)
4) using the volume keys, go down to 'backup and restore' and select it by pressing the power button
5) select 'backup' and once that is done you are all ready to install a custom rom
6) to install a custom rom, download one and transfer to your internal SD card to a directory easily accessible (or external, I've used both) as well as Gapps (assuming you want to download AOKP or CM10)
7) reboot into recovery, wipe/factory reset, then wipe cache, then go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache, then go back and go into mounts/storage and format system
8) go back and select 'install zip from sd card' - find the rom and flash it, when it finishes, flash gapps and then reboot system
YOU'RE DONE. In case you want a video tutorial of how to install a custom rom:

8) go back and select 'install zip from sd card' - find the rom and flash it, when it finishes, flash gapps and then reboot system
YOU'RE DONE. In case you want a video tutorial of how to install a custom rom:

Thanks so much for the step by step guide. I have just about everything figured out except I am stuck at the nandroid backup part. Instead of having an option to backup I have:
reboot system now
apple update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
Not sure where I am going wrong.
There should be an option for backup and restore, are you sure you're in clcokworkmod recovery?

Turns out the system had flashed the original back and that's why I couldn't see clockwork. I got it up and working now. Just finished flashing AOKP and gapps. This has way more than I ever imagined. I am not sure how I feel about it yet, but willing to give it some time.
Thanks for all the help and I am looking forward to doing more roms!

Reboot cycle

Can someone please help me? I'm worried my phone may be really screwed up.
I recently rooted my phone using the instructions from this forum and everything went great. I had no problems for a couple days.
Then I installed Titanium Backup and backed up all my apps.
Then I deleted some apps, like Allshare, Dropbox and other bloatware. I still had no problems.
Then I saw that an OTA update was available. I read somewhere that the update can cause problems if stock apps are removed, so I went into Titanium Backup to restore the apps I had deleted. This is where things started to go wrong. When I tried to restore apps, Titanium Backup was hanging and I had to restart the phone. After Dropbox wouldn't restore, I restarted the phone and I'm stuck in a reboot cycle. The phone restarts, I see the usual boot up screens, I see my lock screen, there's a circled i with a cross through it in the notification bar and I can't unlock the phone. How can I get access to my phone back? I'm really upset that this has happened. I thought I was being very careful and this is exactly the kind of thing I was trying to prevent from happening.
Please help.

Be Brave, little Robot.
From what you've described, you're not out of luck here. I seriously doubt you've hard-bricked your phone. In order for me to help you, I need you to verify the following:
You can get into your Recovery (either CWM or TWRP).
You can get into download mode.
If these two are true, you're in luck. Below, I've copied a post I made yesterday helping someone else through a similar situation. Some things may be a bit different, but for the most part, it'll help you through you stuff.
Ok, first I'll describe what you did and how that (most likely) messed up your phone. Then I'll describe what you can do to fix it.
Problem
It seems like your original flash of CM10.1 went smoothly. It must have been something to do with your Titanium Backup (TiBu) restores. More than likely, you tried to restore too much. In TiBu, the different apps have different colors: Red, Yellow, Green, and White. In the menu, you can see the following Legend:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
White: User Application. These are apps that you installed from the Play Store or sideloaded by directly installing an apk. These are safe to restore.
Red: System Application. These are system files that heavily rely on which Android version (4.1.x vs. 4.2.x) and whether you're on TW or AOSP. I always try to avoid restoring these backups (even when just upgrading to a newer version of the same Rom). Some people will say that you can restore the Data only for these, but my motto is: caution will help prevent mistakes (ground-shaking, I know).
Green: System Service with Useful Data: These are system apps that have useful information (such as User Accounts, etc.). I treat these the same as Red Backups, but am a bit more likely to restore the data of them (green means go, right?).
Yellow: These backups are system data that can be restored as an xml file. These are inherently safer than the red and green ones, and I say restore away (I always restore my Call Log, Messages, and Wi-Fi Access Points).
The reason you were getting FCs was restoring a red or green backup. This can sometimes work, but has a lot of potential for issues when switching between TW and AOSP Roms. Most likely something in your /system folder is messed up due to restoring an app. Even when you flash a new Rom, it just overwrites items in your System folder, it doesn't wipe /System. So whatever is wrong in your /System folder is still there, regardless of what you flash.
Ok, now that we've identified what's wrong with your phone, we can now help solve it!
Solution/Fixes
Are you able to get into a custom Recovery? If not, you need to use Odin and follow The Rooting Guide to get back to a custom recovery (I recommend TWRP, but CWM is just as good).
Next, you want to download a Rom and put it on your device. I'd recommend (just for now), to get Freeza's stock TW Rom.
Now, before you try to flash this Rom, you'll have to wipe. In order to get rid of the FCs, you'll have to at least wipe System. I'd recommend a full wipe of your Internal SD Card (after backing up anything you want to save), but it's not technically necessary. Afterwards, you can wipe data and cache/dalvik cache.
Then you can flash your Rom. It seems like you know how to do this, but in case you don't, I have previously posted directions over here.
Hope this helps!

I've always given my instructions in TWRP, but the options/settings should be very similar in CWM. In the quoted post below, there are instructions on how to flash a new Rom.
For your situation, I'd recommend wiping system in step 4 below:
Ok, let's start at the very beginning (it's a very good place to start).
Before we get started, I'm going to make the following assumptions:
You successfully rooted your phone through Odin.
You currently have a custom recovery (either TWRP or CWM).
You have a Rom you'd like to flash on either your internal storage or your SDcard (I'd recommend the SDcard, but that's your prerogative).
If either of the first two is not true, I'd recommend going back to qbking77's thread and check out the videos on how to use Odin to gain root and a custom recovery.
If number 3 above is not true, download a ROM (nor someone new to flashing/custom Roms, I'd recommend Freeza's stock rooted Rom, as it's identical to stock TW, but just with Root). Once you download a Rom, check it's md5sum to verify that it's a good download. Copy the file to your SD card and get ready to flash (make sure you have decent battery life left, I try to keep at least 50% or more when flashing Roms, although it shouldn't take too long.
I'll give directions on how to flash a Rom below. The instructions will be for TWRP, but CWM has similar options/settings
Turn your phone completely off (hold down power for 3-5 seconds)
Boot your phone into recovery. Hold Up, Menu, and Power for a few seconds (until SAMSUNG appears on your screen and the phone vibrates)
Make a Nandroid backup. I can't emphasize this enough. In flashing, it's almost a certainty that one time, something will mess up. When that happens, you want to be able to restore a backup. In TWRP, just go into Backup Menu and choose where you want it (internal vs. External storage). It takes my phone a few (5-10) minutes to completely backup my data.
In TWRP, click the wipe button, then system. This will completely wipe the Rom from your phone. Doing this will allow you to get a "clean" install, without any settings or leftover files from your old Rom getting in the way. Instead, you could only wipe data (factory reset), which is good enough for most Roms. I'd still recommend a system wipe, though.
Also while in the Wipe menu, wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Go back to the TWRP main menu.
Click Install, then find your Rom zip file (may have to switch from internal to external storage).
Let TWRP do it's thing.
If you're installing a TW-based Rom, chances are it had gapps already installed. If not, you should now flash the correct gapps package from goo.im. Make sure you're flashing the correct one, as if you don't, your google apps will force close upon use.
Reboot into system and give it time to boot (first boot sometimes takes a couple of minutes).
Set up your phone the way you like.
These should be the directions to follow whenever you flash a new Rom. Some Roms have the Aroma installer, so you'll have more options once you choose to flash the Rom zip, but those are typically easy to follow (and vary from Rom to Rom, so I won't be able to give you a good guide on that).
Hope this helps!

Is there an advanced option? Factory rest only wipes Data and Cache, if I recall correctly.
Here are my options:
- reboot system now
- install zip from sdcard
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- backup and restore
- mounts and storage
- advanced
In advanced, here are my options:
- reboot recovery
- wipe dalvik cache
- wipe battery stats
- report error
- key test
- show log
- fix permissions
- go back
By the way, I have to wait 5 minutes between posts because my account is new. (How do I get rid of that?)

Oh! from g_money's guide, under "Mounts and Storage" there should be an option to wipe system. Now be aware, wiping system is wiping your Rom, so you won't be able to boot your phone back up to anything besides recovery and download modes (which is no different than you can do right now anyways).

Ok, that worked. Thanks guys! Everything seems to be back working again.
Does anyone have any idea went wrong with my Titanium Backup? It's kind of useless if it's going to crash my phone when I use it for the main thing it was designed for.
Edit: Actually, I may try to return my phone to stock. Can anyone recommend a guide to un-doing root access and putting everything back completely stock? I think that's probably better for someone with my level of knowledge.
No I think your ok. At some point you restored one bad data or something. The only thing you should ever restore are apps you downloaded from the play store. Never restore any system apps. And samsung apps (bloat) you don't want to delete you just want to freeze.

Yeah, I guess I'll keep it rooted, but I'm going to give things a few days rest after that scare. I need my phone! Maybe I'll come back and mess with it more later.

Am I the only one with these bugs?

Hi,
I'm new here so please go easy on this "noob"
It was my first to unlock and root my phone, followed by flashing a stock ROM (Which is exactly why I rooted it)
I flashed this JB 4.2.2 stock build [ROM] [OTA][GSM] Android 4.2.2 JDQ39: Rooted | Galaxy Nexus > XDA for my Galaxy Nexus
Now...
I can't disable Next-word suggestions in the Language & Input -> Google Keyboard Settings
Also, I noticed a few seconds of lag when pressing the power button to unlock the phone, when viewing recent apps (via the soft-key), and when opening the Camera too
Also, when I choose the "Recent Apps" soft key.. it's as the app that's currently being used is minimised and the homescreen is shown without any icons
The Build came with Busybox pre-installed and now its gone after a day of using my phone... I literally can't find it.
I searched in the play store "BusyBox" and the result is 3 different apps with the same name!
Any Advice?

go back to recovery, format/wipe /system partition, reflash rom.
For your reference, a good app to install bb is stephen (stericsson)'s busybox installer (play store link). Obviously, it needs root.
Next time, read the stickies.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812959
How do I get “root”?
If you are booted into a custom recovery (recoveries will be covered later), root is enabled by default. If you want root while booted into Android, you will need to place two files on your system partition: an “su” binary which grants root access, and a superuser app that manages that access. The two that are available are ChainsDD’s Superuser and Chainfire’s SuperSU. Usually these files are packaged up in a zip file that is flashable using a custom recovery, but they can be flashed manually using ADB. Both of these methods will be described below.

I'm totally new to this rooting &/ flashing thing, so please go easy
So, what you're saying is that I should boot into fastboot mode, wipe system partition (this will format the whole SD card right?), install the same ROM again?
I guess I'll need to install Titanium Backup to backup my apps and settings, I'll have to search for an article for the best way to do it as well..
Can I do it like this:
Open "Rom Manager", Select "Install ROM from SD Card", install it.. ???
PS: Do you have a recommendation for a better ROM, perhaps my choice of ROM wasn't correct...

You can wipe the system partition in a custom recovery (dont know if you can with stock). And yes you could flash via ROM manager but I wouldnt recommend it. I am on XenonHD 11.1 and loving it. But roms are a personal choice so there is no 'best' ROM. Just try out.

How would you recommend CyanogenMod 10.1.2 against the stock 4.2.2 which I have currently?

If you read it, you'll stop thinking you need to be doing anything at this point in FASTBOOT interface! Like mrgnex says, you need to be on a custom recovery to format /system. (Have you read the link yet? By now you should know that the /system partition and the /sdcard/ (aka userdata) are 2 different things!)

Stop! THERE'S NO NEED FOR FASTBOOT HERE!
Thanks Guys for replying.
Yes, I read the info in the link, it was very helpful.
I'm still confused though.. "Fast boot" and "Recovery" are they the same thing?
I tried a "fix" mentioned by someone about using a live wallpaper such as "Water", I tried it and it's been 1/2 hour and it's really smooth compared to before...
Yes, I do have a custom recovery, actually I don't know why, but It seems I've got two according to ROM Manager.
It says I've got Clockwork Mod Recovery & TWRP.
I also tried going into recovery (Volume up + Down + Power) and it worked this time, when I select recovery, it goes into CWRM
I also did a bit of research about CyanogenMod 10.1.2 and from what I could gather it's liked by people a lot.
I'm guessing that definitely some time ahead it'll get all "laggy" again, Is there any reason according to you why I shouldn't install it compared to the stock 4.2.2 I have?

So to get things clear:
No fastboot and recovery arent the same thing.
Vol up+down+power brings you into fast boot and not recovery.
Apparently you dont have 2 custom recoverys since you booted into cwm.
Cm10 is great. But there are many great roms out there. You can start off with cm and then (if you please) look further.
I dont see any reason to not install cm10.1.2 since a whole team built and optimized it. So basically it is a better stock.
When you think your phone is slow you should look into the custom kernels. Thats a different story which I will not begin before you want to

I wanted to know one more thing, Is it bad to flash ROMs to your phone every now and then?
Because I've seen people flashing different ROMs on their phone, I don't wanna damage my phone as I want it to last as long as I can make it.
(by "Bad" I mean... does it reduce the phone's life or it's hardware's life span)

No it can't. I was a flashaholic (until I discovered XenonHD) and my phone didn't got worse. Only overclocking the CPU and gpu can affect the life of the CPU or gpu (or both XD). Just do a fresh install everytime and read the post of the ROM of your choice to see what to do to get it working optimally. If you have any problems just ask.

I'll flash CM in a week or two, as I'm on a tight schedule currently, and I also wanna note down the average battery time I get out of 4.2.2
So... since 4.3 is now out, I was thinking it'd be better for me to flash it other than anything else.
I'll most probably download the stock rom from:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#yakjujwr66v
So far I came across this thread having the steps to flash 4.3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377307
But I wanna flash it and lose my data, so that it's as fresh as it can be...
Will that work if I use "wugfresh root toolkit"?

With the stock package there is no need for a toolkit.
Hell, there's no reason for a toolkit any time.

What was I thinking...
I apologize guys... I guess I wasn't thinking straight as its past midnight here...
So just to clarify stuff so that I don't end up doing something wrong:
-> Head into Recovery Mode (with usb debugging enabled... connect usb cable to phone and pc)
-> Wipe System
-> Wipe Cache
-> Install from SD card (select .zip file)
right?
Also, I performed a backup of the applications I have via Titanium Backup, They'll work on 4.3 when I restore them right? or do you recommend downloading them from the play store again?
Sorry for being such a noob, and Thanks for your responses!
backup everything from your /sdcard to your computer, titanium backups and a nandroid
the google stock package is NOT flashable in CWM/TWRP
if you follow the GOOGLE instructions it WILL wipe your device (remember that backup you made of everything?)
alternatively you can make sure and have adb/fastboot working on your computer properly, extract all the files out of the zip (including the tar.gz located inside), and in recovery, do a factory reset, then boot to fastboot, fastboot flash system and boot ....
as for Titanium Backup, there is a work around to get it working on 4.3, but root is lacking full power.

Thanks!
I'm now on Android 4.3
I'm full of excitement atm :victory:
I took a backup of my apps using titanium backup, I installed it but can't use it, it says I need root (which I already had before).
I read online somewhere that I need to root again, but I don't wanna lose all my data/ apps I installed again...
Any ideas?
If I use Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit... will I lose my data?
Thanks for the continued support!

You probably won't be able to afaik. You have an AT&T device which uses GSM network on Sprint which uses CDMA network. Change carriers or get a Sprint device.

Verizon is also CDMA, but Sprint and Verizon firmware is incompatible with each other. They don't work with each other.
The thing is, whoever you bought this phone from had unlocked the bootloader, went S-Off, and changed his CID to superCID before he locked it again without removiong S-Off which is a good thing for you. With S-Off you can still do modifications.
Try this (this will wipe your phone, so backup anything important to you like photos and such):
Download this firmware.zip
Rename the .zip to 0P6BIMG (that's a zero, not the letter) and place it onto the root of your extSD (by root of, I mean just on the card and not in a folder)
Power off your phone, and boot it up by holding both the power button and vol up. Keep holding them until it boots.
The flashing process should start automatically, but if it doesn't select hboot (in bootloader volume keys navigate and power button selects ~ covering all bases because I'm not sure of your skill level)
It will tell you to press vol up to flash. Do that. It will tell you press power to reboot. Do that as well.
That is WWE/European firmware for GSM carriers. I'm not sure if it will help or not, but I do know that if it doesn't work like you want that you will be no worse off than you are now. You'll either still have the same service as now, or you'll get what you you are looking for.
Good luck!

No, you won't brick.
Go here for TWRP. Use the primary download link and the instructions to flash it in fastboot.
Thanks you

@alibili
I forgot to add, you'll have to unlock your bootloader first. You can do that via htcdev.com. Instructions are there.
You'll need to register an account there first, then select HTC One (M8), then follow the instructions.

After you flash TWRP like the other guy said. to flash ROM, find a rom you like that is compatible with your device (google it or ask it here), then put it in the internal storage or sd card in the phone, boot into TWRP recovery choose wipe, advance wipe and wipe data (this will clear all user data backup anything important!!) Wipe system, cache, dalvic cache and go back to main menu and choose install, find the ROM that you downloaded previously and Gapps (if required) and choose install and swipe to confirm. If the log shows "patching (blank) unconditionally" or has two error don't mind it, its normal.

Wiping system is unnecessary. It can also lead to problems if the ROM fails to flash. If it fails, then the OS will be wiped and your phone won't boot until you put another ROM onto your extSD to flash.
The best thing to do is just the normal wipe (it says in TWRP "most times this is all you will need" ~ also they call it advanced wipe for a reason, if you are not exactly sure about what you are doing there don't do it) and after the normal wipe/factory reset (or whatever it says, don't remember exactly, haven't flashed anything since this morning) flash the ROM
ALSO!! "like that other guy said" :laugh::good:

Personally I recommend wiping system because ive had experience in which I flashed a rom without wiping the system and I had trouble with the settings and system apps after that so I decide to do a system wipe Everytime I flashed a rom and the problem never happened again. I just didn't want him to go through what I had to go through to recover the incident. However I don't do a system wipe if im just updating the rom (like from nightly 12/8 to nightly 12/10)

Nightly? CM?
Most ROMs (almost all of them) have a wipe system script in the ROM.zip that wipes /system during the flash in TWRP. You can recover from a bad flash with /system wiped, but it's a hassle. At least with devices that have an extSD you can easily recover from that by putting a ROM onto you SD card to flash and recover an operating system. So on theM8, it isn't a tragic problem. With devices like Nexus ones, there is no extSD and doing this can result in a non-bootable device. It is almost always unnecessary to wipe system before a flash of a ROM.
EDIT: about being to lazy too go back to check my username, I feel your feels. Lazy as I can be when I can be.

It's just how i do it and I've had no problem with it. I want to share my success and hope other people don't go through it the hard way. You don't have to agree with me, this is only my opinion you can have your own, I'm just saying that it saves a lot of Hassel for me but it may not work for you.

I fully agree here. I've flashed ROMs dozens, if not hundreds of times on various devices, and I never wipe system. If I did do it (maybe once or twice) it was because the ROM didn't boot; and even then, wiping system could have just been a placebo, anyway (it could have been something else causing the issue).
IMHO, its better to not wipe system when flashing a ROM. If you do run into problems you can always go back and do so (wipe system) and re-flash. But that is probably going to be 01.% of the time.
All the other times, its better to keep system, and in the case of a failed ROM flash, the user still has a means of booting into OS, and have more options to fix the problem (re-download files, etc.).
You'll also note that on the TWRP default wipe screen (which only wipes data, cache and Dalvik) it says "most of the time, this is the only wipe you need" (or something like that - since we're being lazy here, I'm too lazy to boot into reocveyr and get the exact wording!).
It says that for a reason, and those guys that develop TWRP are pretty smart.
