[Q] Custom Contact list for BT devices - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I recently bought a new car and promptly linked the phone via BT. Unfortunately the Audi MMI can only sort by surname and with the narrow width in the in-dashboard display my recently called list can often look like this...
McConach...
McConach...
McConach...
which is less than helpful
So the question is, is there a way to have a secondary list, linked to my main list, in someway that can file the names as "Darren McConachie" (ie all one name rather than split into first and surname) and pass that to BT devices?

If you go in to contacts on the phone (the contacts app) not dialer. The click he menu button (three dot on top of eachoher) then settings you have some options there which may help.
Be sure to report back and let us know either way.
PS Get a BMW next time LOL

Yeah been through those settings, everything on my phone is sorted by first name! Looks like something I'll just have to get used to!

I have the same issue. In my old phone i was able to do a bluetooth setup to change the way these contacts where transferred. Even though i think this is an Audi problem, it could be worked around if the GN would deliver the contacts in a different format. This would be a matter of changing things inside the bluetooth stack i guess.
:-(
Martin with the new GN
Edit: Maybe i just crossover first names and last names in my exchange account, where this is coming from. I am only accessing it from the PC otherwise and there is an option to change the sorting so maybe i give that a try - pretty dirty workaround though

Android + Audi 3G MMI Contact Sync

Not sure how many of us here drive an Audi, but figured I'd give this forum a shot. I posted this question in the car forums, but apparently no one uses Android over there, let alone an Evo. I'm not quite sure if this is a phone specific problem or an Android problem.
So Audi's 3G Multimedia Interface (MMI), uses bluetooth to connect/sync my phone contacts from my phone and displays them on my car's Nav screen. From there I can select names, make calls, etc.
The problem is, I believe that the car is pulling "All Contacts" instead of just "My contacts" from Google. This makes it extremely cumbersome as I have an extra 100 contacts to sift through while I'm driving.
However, my phone itself is setup correctly, as I selected "Only contacts with phone numbers".
I realize Audi's management of phone sync may be different from other car makers, but it may also be the similar. Any ideas?
I'm not sure that there's anything you can do. Mine syncs the entire phonebook also (Audi A4). Sorry to break the bad news.
Yea, that's a bit disheartening. Thanks for the reply though, good to know. Who could we contact to try and get this changed? HTC? Google?

I am working on the same issue - temp solution - download just the contacts you want into a vcard format, then put them on an SD card and sync. It is much cleaner, but only allows 100 contacts. It worked better for me with addresses also for the nav.
I work for a competing automaker as a dealership technician. We run into this problem and many others with our wireless to vehicle integration system. The best workaround for your particular problem would be to swap your contact lists. Backup all of your contacts to Google. Then delete all of the contacts you don't want sent to the car. Then redownload your phone book to the car. Next, restore your contact list from Google. And finally, reupload only the contacts you want Google to store to the Google cloud.
I know its a lot of steps, but it should provide you with the solution you require. One other thing to keep in mind, if you have an automated phonebook download option in your vehicles interface, it should be deactivated. If it isn't, there's the distinct possibility that the next automatic update will pull all the contacts you just eliminated.
Same issue, using SD instead
I don't know if you found a solution. I am facing the exact same issue on Audi MMI with Samsung Galaxy Note 2. I have been searching up and down and found no clean solution. I am using the SD import workaround. I re-paired my phone and denied the phonebook access so MMI can't download from my phone.

I've got a 2012 S4 and just bought the Galaxy S4 (my first android phone, switched from iphone5) and i had the exact same problem. i spent the first two days of ownership of the GS4 googling my heart out trying to figure out WTF.
I have found a permanent solution that works for me but, may not work for you all. reason i say that is, if you rely on google or other accounts to manage your contacts, this will not work for you. the problem is gmail/google, by default any and all emails you send/receive are stored as "contacts" in google. regardless of what settings you have on your phone, when you sync your contacts with audi MMI, it pulls all contacts from both phone and google (possibly other email accounts you have syncing to your phone).
what i did was...
1) go into my google accounts (i have two) and went into the settings and told google that i would "manually add" contacts.
2) i then deleted all contacts from all my google accounts.
3) then i turned contact sync "on" on the phone and synced the phone with google.
4) turned contact sync back off.
the following is within the audi MMI... (the audi MMI does NOT store the contacts synced with your phone, it refreshes the contact list every time it connects to the phone, this is why you cannot access the list immediately after ignition is on).
1) unpaired the phone from MMI.
2) deleted all profiles within the NAME/DIRECTORY menu in MMI (if you get to a point where it asks you for your ID PIN (something along those lines), you will need to enter the last 7 digits of your VIN number.
3) i then repaired the phone, and when the prompt on the phone popped up asking for permission to access contacts, clicked yes and selected to not be prompted again.
after it redownloaded the directory from the phone, only contacts i add to the phone showed up.
WARNING, by deleting the profiles, you will also delete any manually added addresses/locations stored from the MMI as well, i personally can live with this.
Android BT Fix for Audi
Hey there...
New to this forum. Here is a fix for the Phonebook sync for Audi MMI / Android phones. It's an app called Bluetooth Phonebook from the Play store. Download it to your phone and voila...it works.
Hope this helps.

How do I transfer sim contacts to Evo? (Answer)

Ok, lots of searching did not have a decent answer, and lots of trial and error seems to have worked.
I needed to get my contacts from my AT&T (Raphael/Fuze) sim card to my new Evo. (I totally walked out of store without them doing this.)
There is no software to do this. (No, I do not have outlook installed and they were on my sim card anyway, not in contacts as I have completely lost my contacts in past...but sim contacts stayed. Wasn't about to tempt that fate again.)
So...easy way...and it is easy...
Go to contacts and use the Menu option to Select Contacts and select all.
Then go to Send Contact and only option I had was beam. (What the heck see what that was.)
This actually sets up a bluetooth beam, but you have to get Evo ready for it.
Turn on Evo, turn on bluetooth
Press the Menu non-button to get Settings option
Select Wireless & networks
Go to Bluetooth settings and make the device discoverable.
Then the two phones find each other.
On the Rapheal there was a 'Tap Here' or something option when it discovered the Evo.
The Evo asked for a code...I just guessed and went with 0000.
Then the Raphael asked for a code and I guessed again at 0000.
Then the transfer started.
I got A TON OF messages...because I got one for every contact (each was a .vcf file).
This is where things get a bit blurry...but I think I tapped on one of the announcements and was asked if I wanted to do something to it with People (or some other file.)
I guessed I wanted it in People so tapped that on the Evo.
Then it popped up a list asking if just that one or all of them. I said all of them.
And voila...all 45 contacts were on my Evo!!! WOO HOO.
Oh...and yes there was one or two that were techically 'Contacts' with a picture..and looks like the pic came across. Have to see what it looks like in a moment...as I wanted to jot my notes before I forgot.
So there you go...that has to be one of the coolest uses I have attempted of bluetooth. (My stereo headset at gym just isn't as cool as beaming data across phones!!!)
Looks like one guy here has complicated answer and another did what I did but didn't explain steps.
HAHA.

Need a dialer that IGNORES letters in the phone number

In my contact manager, I often include some descriptive text in the phone number field to differentiate one "Work" number from another.
For example, I have two "Work" numbers for Verizon. In the phone number field, after the actual number, I'll enter "Tech Supp" for one and "Billing" for the other. On my phone, it looks like:
Work: (800) 555-1212 Tech Supp
Work: (800) 555-1213 Billing
But dialers convert that text and dial it as numbers. Dialers I have tried will dial the above numbers as:
800555121283247877
80055512132455464
Is there a dialer that will ignore text that appears in the field with the phone number and/or simply dial the first ten digits??
Thanks.
Jace
I've never seen such a dialer, especially since some letters are actually used for things like a 'hard pause' and 'wait'.
There is a cleaner solution however, but it'll take a bit of work on your part.
If you use Google Contacts as your primary contact list (and I highly suggest you do for all sorts of reasons), you can actually change the text displayed next to any phone or email simply by clicking where it says Home/Work and selecting CUSTOM. Name it whatever you like and that label will carry over to your phone in the S3's default address book.
For example I have a few listed as:
Work - Direct (Line)
Work - Main (Company)
Note: I had an issue with a previous phone where not all the letters showed up so I tried to keep the names shorter by omitting the parts you see in ().
It works great however and it's quite easy to set up on a PC when on the Google contacts page. (I'm not sure if you can set custom on the phone directly).
Good luck
Thanks. I'd always heard that the characters for pauses and waits were "," and ";". but a little Googling reveals that "p" and "w" are used as well. You learn something every day, eh?
I use Microsoft Exchange for my contacts and sync w/ my phone because the contact list is shared with other people. Calendars too. I'll look into syncing with Google Contacts, but am a little leary of putting all that data in the cloud with reports of all the breaches occurring these days. Still, if Google Contacts can sync (two ways) w/ MS Exchange and with our phones (also two ways) so we are able to edit data on the phones and have it sync back to MS Exchange (through Google Contacts), that would be a workable solution.
Thanks again for the input.

And yes you can do the same thing from the phones contacts list.

I don't see how to edit the label from the phone itself, if that is what you were referring to, neither from the stock Contacts app, nor from Touchdown (which is what I currently have all my contacts in).

It was started above already
In the stock contacts app
Edit contact
Next to the number should be a label
Click it scroll down to custom and change it.

I see someone gave you a solution to your issue, you should edit your title to reflect that it's been fixed or something along that line, I jumped in to suggest that same solution!

While the solution may be workable, it is rather brute force to edit the 4000+ contacts I have. Is it acceptable to leave the thread open in the hope of a more elegant solution?

MyFord Touch - Text and Contact Pics Working!

Just an update to how I got this working in my 2013 Ford Focus with MyFord Touch.
First, CM10 Nightlies has the needed update to Bluetooth Message Access Protocol (MAP) for the MyTouch to properly read text messages as they come in. (whomever did that, thank you!)
Second, it was bugging me that the Nexus wouldn't push the full contact card, to include the contact photo, so I set out to find a way to do this. Getwiththeprogram over on the Sync Owner to Owner forum found this neat little program called Bluetooth File Transfer which has the ability to push contacts, INCLUDING pictures, to the MyFord Touch system. Below is the link. Simply remove your current phone book from the MyFord Touch, disconnect the phone from the system. Then, manually add the phone in the bluetooth settings instead of having it open for other devices to connect, where you put a code in both the phone and then on the MyFord Touch. Once connected, both the Bluetooth File Transfer software and the MyFord Touch software will see each other. Last step, on the bluetooth file software, goto options, more, then send contacts, and select which ones you want to send (all, some, whatever). On the myford touch, select ADD CONTACTS (manually again) and then have the phone push the contacts. You should see the car updating contacts, one by one. The screen will go away, but it's not done, wait for it to come back and say it's complete.
That's it... and to be honest, that took a lot of digging to find, it's not documented very well anywhere.
If you get stuck, just let me know, I might be able to help.
Bluetooth File Transfer
A quick update. I have to correct my previous post. It looks like it's either or... contact pics or mytouch (with updated bluetooth MAP). Because the Bluetooth File Transfer requires a connection to send the contact info (pics) it needs to connect to the mytouch stereo. This is a separate connection from the regular updated MAP bluetooth connection. So, when you try to revert back to the regular connection, you have it's associated contact list (minus the pictures).
I am going to try to write to the folks at CM and see if I can find someone with the knowledge to get this a step closer.
Le sigh...
Thanks for that. I'm picking up my new car in a few weeks. I'm using minco rom. Will report back if it works.
Which nightly are you using? I have a 2013 fusion and I'm on the latest nightly but I can't get the MAP profile to work.
Thanks
So when I look at the info for my phone on the MFT system. I under profiles I see SMS. Is there something I'm missing?
Thanks

I just loaded cm-10-20121029 and the MAP functionality broke, again. So I made a decision to just stick with what I know works for sure, regardless of nightly... and went back to the Bluetooth File Transfer app. I'll wait to see if I hear back from the CM10 devs regarding the update to the bluetooth stack. Until then, at least I can show off peoples pics when they call. (LOL, shallow, I know, but I love it!)
The nightly that did get MAP to work for me was cm-10-20121027.

In my Focus, I was unable to find a profiles setting.
If you are trying to get it to read texts, the nightly I listed above does it once you load it, don't have to do a thing. (at least I didn't) Still, tonights nightly broke it again. Le sigh... Still, I am glad I got one of the last two things up and running.
Btw, little tip, when (if) you are trying to load a picture for your background, the pic must be exactly 800x384. Any other size and it won't load. Pretty neat once it's in there tho! Now if I can find where to change the loading and closing Ford logo files, lol!
I don't suppose this blue tooth file transfer app would help make Google maps navigation work using the car speakers? The Bluetooth system in my car is called blue and me (fait punto). I'd love this, gets hard to hear the phone speaker over 50mph
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
So I went back to the nightly you said but I still don't get any text message alert. If I switch to AOKP I can send texts from the car but still doesn't read them to me. Any help would be great.
Thanks
I just moved to a new Galaxy Note 2, and everything works... out of the box. Both texts able to be read and pictures showing up with contacts.
I am using CM10 M2 and can confirm that it bluetooth MAP works with my BMW connecteddrive. Of course, only SMS works, no emails.
sorry
Additionally, CM10 M2 also seems to have AVRCP 1.3 and can stream music track NAMES. Stock JB was not able to do that. This tested on BMW .
I figured out how to do.it.
You use the same program as mentioned in first post.
Set up your phone NORMALLY with bluetooth.
THen delete your phonebook in mytouch.
Then go to your phone screen.. then settings...then manage phonebook
Then go to add a contact
Next, GO TO THE ANDROID PHONE.... then open the program, then click the 3 dots and select send contact. Select as many as you want. Then click send as single... then select SYNC...
Watch the contacts upload. Then click on on mytouch...all done!!!!

[Q] Transferring phone contacts into Pioneer DEH-X6600BT

It's not happening and I am frustrated.
I just got this system installed two days ago. My Bluetooth connects and I can play music and answer or make calls, but my contacts and phone history will not sync over to the receiver.
I click yes on the dialog box when it asks to transfer the information, but it never transfers. I called Pioneer once but the rep was not much help. He suggested I delete the phone from the receiver and start over again. I did that. I called the installer and he suggested I do that as well as turn Bluetooth on and off. I did that.
I am going to go see the installer Monday if I can't get it figured out. It appears I am doing everything I should be doing but it seems the phone is blocking the transfer. I even tried selecting all my contacts and sharing them with Bluetooth and then the receiver but the send file fails.
Any suggestions as to what might be blocking this sync?
Hey I have the same deck as you and what you are trying to do is not possible for the time I spend with it and if you did manage to sync them what are the benefits? Look at your contact list when you leave your phone behind but can't do anything with said contacts because you don't have a phone? Doesn't make much sense right.
That dialog box that comes up when you first pair with the deck is asking you permission to access the phone contacts and not download/sync them.
When your phone is connected you can push the phone button and will let your scroll through your contact list and press the button again to call. Well that's all I remember what to do when I used the phone part of this deck, which is not a lot.
Hope this cleared some things up.
Also if I'm completely off base and you are having trouble with the contacts not displaying or showing when someone calls, then you got a bad unit.

Thank you Gilbert for the reply.
When I push any of the phone menu buttons, I don't get any information. It just says "transferring."
I decided to call Samsung yesterday and twice got on remote access, but both times I hit the wrong button on my stereo and the calls were lost. When I called the third time I started speaking with someone who was going to get me back to the remote access department and he asked me how many contacts I was trying to sync over. I told him about 1,800. He said, "Whoa, I can tell you from experience that generally car stereo receivers only sync up to 900 contacts."
So, I worked all night last night on my contacts. They were a mess and even if this doesn't work the guy did me a huge favor because I was able to shave my contact list down to 564 and unlinked them all from old Verizon backup assistant and Microsoft Exchange contacts. It was an ugly job that truly needed to be done.
Anyway, I have not tried to allow access yet. I am going to try in a little while and then I will report back in.
Well, it's been ugly, but things are working out .... weirdly!
After cleaning up my stock contact app, the contacts finally became visible but they are still being linked in with Microsoft Outlook contacts. I have tried every which way for them not to show up. I even deleted everyone of them from my computer and they are still showing up when I Bluetooth the stereo.
Well at least you got it working for you and seemed like you overwhelmed the unit with all those contacts.
But I find that strange that you can't get those contacts from showing up. So you deleted those outlook contacts from your computer but did you on the phone? Also have you disabled contact sync of the outlook account in the settings?
Also you could try to unpair your phone and pair again and see if that helps.
