[Help] SGW Rooting After OTA Update - Samsung Galaxy W I8150

Hi there just wanna find out as this morning I had updated my firmware to 2.3.6 via OTA.
Since these ROMs have been released here giving me no chance to try them....have learnt the latest update does not permit the phone to be rooted.
My mistake is that I had not rooted n flashed recovery prior to the OTA update.
Anyone care to share any method possible.....Thanks

is actually an official 2.3.6 version can not be in the root ..
so should you restore to 2.3.5 and perform root verasi then install RZRecovery then install a custom ROM version Slim Shady.
good luck ..

I've just got root on the latest firmware using Samsung Recovery-Mode. Just check this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390234.

Lucky me. MY SGW already root, Then I update to 2.3.6 via OTA.
It's still rooted.

Phew !!! Almost Bricked my SGW..With Patience and No Itchy Fingers Stock ROM 2.3.5 = Recovered...Now Have Rooted Already.....Getting Ready !!!

Hi guys,
I'm an absolute noob when it comes to rooting and all this is my first smartphone and I dont intend to flash any ROMS till ICS ROMS come out....the recent FW update in the UK (XXKL3) is pretty smooth and works ok for me but there's one thing I'd like to know: is it likely a root for this firmware will be possible soon or are some FW permanently unrootable? I follow from all the topics in our forum that the latest samsung FW isnt rootable and u need flash the older FW to root. I want the root for 2 reasons:
1) To remove crapware that takes up memory and battery life
2) To use market enabler that would unlock location-specific apps.
Thanks for your help!!!!

It IS Rootable. Follow the instruction on first post here, Rooting via Recovery:

Will try it out thanks for the response!! Any advice on how to uninstall/remove crapware like Yahoo finance, APMobile, AccuWeather once rooted? Thanks

Try Titanium Backup from the market

Thanks a million fender! Followed the instructions and rooted without any issues. First I installed the market enabler app that did what I was hoping; let me install apps not available in my country. Then I managed to get Titanium
Backup pro but it seems a rather complex app with lots of options and I'm not sure what the consequences would be of either 'uninstalling' or freezing some of the so called system apps. What are the dangers of maybe uninstalling some of the bloatware? Could it affect the normal function of the phone? Thanks again for the help

First you can backup applications before uninstalling them, so if it messes your phone up you just restore them. I usually remove bloatware like Accuweather, Yahoo Finance and various **** like that. Secondly, I suggest to make a backup through Recovery after you install it, so you're sure to have your back covered in case of breaking your ROM!

Are you referring to Arco's CWM?
By the way, I've begun freezing lots of system apps and processes to see how the phone would improve and looks plain sailing so far!! Noticing a slight improvement in battery life but still would welcome any suggestions about the apps I could target(since there are so many) that have more of an impact on the battery. Thanks once again!
Sent from my GT-I8150 using XDA App

With reference to freezing apps...
I've used SGSII community spreadsheet.....
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...1gdDJRekl4QmkyNmIzUmRvX2h3UDVkQXc&output=html
Don't go too crazy though... I found that freezing SNS will slow down SMS sending [fails] and you have to retry the send over and over....

Thanks Vyker. Is there really a difference between freezing and uninstalling as pertains to battery life? Will complete uninstall give better results than freezing or is it the same?
Sent from my GT-I8150 using XDA App

They are the same as I understand it.
I would recommend only freezing.

Thanks!!
Sent from my GT-I8150 using XDA App

If I could recommend Gemini App Manager, free from Market.
It can do what TB does, freezing and stopping auto runs. Best to use in Expert Mode.....but a good free alternative to TB paid app.

It's most likely the Full EL29 update that Sprint is pushing out that removes Carrier IQ from our phones. And no it's not safe to download any OTA if you are rooted it would fail anyways.

It probably wont work anyways since you are not on stock. Since you are running UnNamed like me you are already good...
I put the attached file in system/app folder and rebooted into recovery and wiped cache and dalvlik and have not seen the popup since. Oh yea I ran fix permissions just for good measure. You can also check out this thread here

Sprint announcement is here.
If I do this update, would it effect my ability to root in the future?
Highly unlikely. However, if you want to be completely safe, root and install a rom with EL29 and also update your modem.

You have almost nothing to gain from updating to this if you're already rooted...this has been leaked weeks ago already and as far as I can tell it's exactly the same thing.

Thanks. I went ahead and just rooted. Haven't been following the different ROMs... is Calk's the best?
I also got a question about this. I am on baseband Ek02. I am rooted and have the blazer rom installed. My kernal says El29 and build number says same Gingerbread El29. So when I do get the OTA should I unroot? or just click update?
Thanks,

EL29 is the most current you should not get the update, if you do try any ota update at this point, it will fail.

I put the file you posted in /system/apps and used TB to freeze system updates, as well as a cache and dalvik wipe with reboot. Am I all set so the update won't install and screw up Calk's rom for me? And get rid of the notifications?
What if your a stock root and want the update? Should I unroot then update and then reroot?
I don't know if this will work so try at your own risk. I read about a recent ota for the epic 4g that the notifications were getting on some people's nerves. Someone brought up the idea and a few people said it worked.
If you are on a custom rom and the ota nag screen pops up, let it update. It will fail and I'm guessing it will try to flash but give you an exclamation mark when trying to update. When you get the mark, pull the battery them put it back in. They are saying in that post that the nag screen will stop appearing after that. I haven't tried it yet because I don't need to. If you do decide to do it, I think it would be a good idea to nandroid before everything and have all the files you need to flash it back to where you want it if something goes wrong. I don't know for sure but I don't think it will brick a phone.
Somebody was asking about cal's 2.8.1. I have the trexcell 3800 battery in the phone now. I did properly break in and condition the battery when I first got it. Here is a screen shot. I went off the charger at 8am and have not been plugged in at all during the day. I used the phone quite a bit too.

Depends on what your taste and personal preferences are. All the ROMs found here are at least as good as the stock ROM.....most are better. For a really awesome appearance and stability with speed and increased battery life I'd recommend Strongsteve's odex blue ROM.
I figured I would ask here instead of making my own thread. Would it be best to download an OTA on a brand new phone and then doing all this rooting and flashing and ROMing? I'm asking because I don't have the phone yet but I'll be doing all this cool stuff as soon as i get it.
A lot of members that went from calk's ROM to the blazer ROM are showing battery improvements, one member even said his tripled. I'm currently using it and couldn't be happier!

Sgs3 system update 7/15/12 does not have proper root access anymore?

After today's system update for my sgs3. I believe it took my root out. I downloaded a free root checker and it said "this device does not have proper root access" I first noticed when I opened mybackup pro and my toolbox wasn't there anymore. I wanted to freeze some more bloatware. What should I do not? Unroot then reroot?

You're just going to have to wait to see if someone can figure out a way to obtain root on it While you wait, you may want to go read all the things you were supposed to read before you rooted (e.g. warnings in big letters about not taking updates). If you're going to root and play around with the sensitive bits of your phone, its pretty important to know exactly what you're doing. Everything you need to know is here, you just need to read it.
My last two phones have been Motorola and im new to Samsungs.. We used an app called Voodoo OTA Root keeper when there was a new OTA out. MOST of the time it would protect root on an OTA, but, like everything else, it wasnt 100% guarantee. Does anyone know if this app works with Samsung and the GS3?

I was rooted before the update but was tired of the dang nag screen...so after reading from others that rooting still works, I accepted the update and re-rooted + flashed update to radio. Everything has been fine.
I think the update took away part of the search functionality that Apple has been squawking about, so I downloaded that file to avoid the issue.
BTW I also had trouble at one point getting WiFi Tether to work, even using recommended profile = Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE). I deleted, then re-installed and it seems to be working fine.
Now I do have a question about OTA RootKeeper by Project Voodoo. According to the app page on Google Play -
Typical system where the protection won't work:
- HTC Desire
- Samsung Galaxy Spica
- Samsung Galaxy S / SII
but when you look at the app itself, it says that

Actually, i used OTA rootkeeper on my ATT GS3 to protect my root from the dumb search OTA update and it kept mg root alive. Im using stock samsung rom. So for me at least, OTA rootkeeper worked perfect. Just remember to go in the program (i refuse to call them apps), and back up your root before you apply the OTA.

So I guess that answers my above question that VooDoo does work on the S3... but it will not work if an update is "pushed manually" via Odin?

To the OP, I am not sure if you are still having issues getting rooted, but I used the method described Here.
like another user posted, I was rooted and was tired of the nagging about updates, so I took the update and forgot to download Voodoo OTA rootkeeper. I used the above method and was able to reroot without a problem. I then used OTA Rootkeeper to maintain root. Havent had an issue since.
Hope this helps

Can we get a screen shot of your "About device page... expecially the baseband and kernel versions... build also if possible.
Can someone let us know if the update fixes the stupid screen rotation bug when you turn off auto-brightness. Also, if there is a noticeable change in overall snapiness. Thanks!

General noob question:
How would I go about rooting 4.3 for AT&T? Can someone point me to the thread of it exists? Yes I've tried the search function and no nothing exact came up. I don't want to mess up and then be "that guy" on here crying about making a noob mistake.

See Dr. Ketan and his thread regarding the bootloader on 4.3.....g
Will you be able to go back to 4.1.2 if you take this update?

But that's a thread specifically for 7100-based (non-LTE) variants, right? Whereas we have n7105-based LTE Versions...if I'm missing something please let me know. TIA.

I rooted using this method while still on 4.1.2 and it worked flawlessly.
I then paid for and installed SuperSU Pro and activated "Survival Mode"
Lastly, after the OTA update was COMPLETELY finished, I followed this simple procedure to get root back again.
SuperSU disables Knox for you on 4.3 which is also nice. I should have qualified here that I am COMPLETELY stock other than root. I have not "frozen" any apps., deleted any Samsung provided files, etc. and I have stock bootloader and stock recovery. This will likely NOT work if you have done any of those things.
Is there a flashable version of this? If not, can somebody make one? Thanks.
I'm running a custom rom and rollouts/updates from vendors freak me out because I don't trust not one of them. Knowing AT&T they have thrown in some bit of encryption that locks the bootloader. I understand this might not be the case this time but I do know none of them can be trusted.
Now if you excuse me, I'm 1/2 done with 1984 the book and my tin foil hat is making me itch.
Guys I need help I am stuck, I am using unlock att with tmobile, I check software update but it days interrupted, and I even tried with kies but it's not connecting at all, I tried 2 pcs.... Any help... What to do to update it... Please

The update has only been out for a few hours and we are asking for .zip files already ??
Sheesh...
Give the devs some time to pull it apart and clean it up...unless you would like Knox and a bootloader lock ??

I have a few questions for you and/or those more in the know:
If I were to do this same thing, would I be able to flash a custom recovery (like TWRP) and/or flash custom ROM's/Kernels like I can already do now? One of my main concerns is that the stock kernel doesn't support Boeffla Sound, and that really makes for better audio on this device...might as well take full advantage of that Wolfson DAC...
I have to admit, it would be nice to be able to use pure AT&T stock, but rooted, as a base...this is why I loved the old CleanROM AT&T SE so much...
TIA for any guidance you can give on this.
Side note: after ODIN'ing back to 4.1.2 MA4, it says I have a 741MB update I can take....I'm sure that's this 4.3 update...Culpeper, VA here.

I did the same as marchusdavis but it resulted in a total disaster. After I downloaded the OTA update from AT&T I restarted my phone and it installed through CWM-Touch. At the end it asked if I wanted to ensure root was maintained and of course I said "yes" there (as well as through my SuperSU Pro Survival Mode). When it booted, my WiFi no longer works AND I lost root.
If anyway has any advice on how to get to a stock 4.3 from here please let me know!
Ugh, having trouble updating atm.
Goes up to 30%, then my phone reboots and says
"The update was interrupted" or something like that
On stock 4.1.2 rooted with stock recovery if anyone can help.

I don't believe so, as I am completely stock, bootloader and all. If you want to install other ROMs, you'd need to use a different method I believe. Likely downloading this update either via Kies or something else, and use ODIN to do everything. If you search around a bit on XDA, you'll probably find someone who has done it successfully and posted how. While I like custom ROMs, I have not had a need to use one yet on this device. However, if Samsung doesn't eventually give us Air Command, that might be enough to make me try it!
Is it possible to get the official update from the leak or do I have to downgrade to 4.1.2? I tried updating from the leak but it said it's the latest version.

So, i heard that you got it worked. Maybe that you need to update latest or something else such as clear cache partition. It will work if I dont wrong. This software tool not for some devices.
I have tried it on Galaxy Ace, Tab 2 7.0, Young, Grand Quattro, Mini 2 and Lenovo A369i. Maybe hope you can support Kingo's Tool.
Press THANKs button if kind-hearted and got having a soft hand. Just need it for increase
