[Q] HTC Desire - Girlfriend ROM and apps? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought the SGS2, and my girlfriend is getting my old HTC Desire.
She tried it for a week, with Oxygen ROM and while generally happy with it, she was underwhelmed and annoyed with a few of the more obvious warts of stock android 2.3. The crappy dialer and the crappy keyboard, to name a few.
I then installed a lot of GO apps on it, GO Launcher EX, GO Dialer, GO Widget etc.
While these are in some respects better, they have other issues.
I am now considering if a ROM with Sense would be a good compromise for her. I will not give her the latest stock 2.2 ROM from HTC, I want her to have 2.3. So it would have to be a 2.3 ROM with Sense on it. And I don't even know which version of Sense. I have only really worked with the one in the stock 2.2 ROM from HTC. I think it is Sense 1.9?
So, can you guys recommend a 2.3 ROM with Sense or a 2.3 ROM and some good core apps (dialer, keyboard, sms/texting etc.) that is girlfriend-friendly?
Thanks in advance

I'd recommend one with the Sense 3.0.

why you pointing to external link when we have a development section full of nice a great ROMs?

I would recommend a ROM with Sense 2.1/3.0 (Hybrid) because the Sense 3.5/3.0 ROMs are a bit too much sometimes for the Desire as I read and heard (in case of lags and so).
But Runnymede is recommended very often.
So I would go with Revolution or InsertCoin which I self am using since a few months and i'm quite happy with it.

+1 for revolution. It's the most stable and lag free sense rom I have ever used. I also think a sense rom is more useful for your gf than a stock Android one. You should definitely let her try revolution

Why do all threads where people ask recommendations for third party turn out Sense 3.5 and hybrid abomination commercials?
Run either a ruu or flash her a rooted stock rom unless you have an ambition in becoming a mobile phone user support for ungrateful girlfriends.
Or simply buy her an iphone as I did for mine.

You'll probably get laid more often as an added bonus because of it.

@erklat
And I really dont get the point why you always have to bash the other Roms except Supernova's. Supernovas Rom sure is great but there also other good ROMs (even with Sense 3.0/3.5). They are maybe that not stable and so on but the Users also have different preferences. For some eye-candy is the most important feature, for other it is stability and speed.

Not that I don't bash just supernova, I don't bash either of the Sense 1.9 roms, aosp roms, or even roms which are broken and are advertised as such.
And I have no beef with roms or their developers, but with idiots that turn every rom recommendation thread into this. OK, you're free to do whatever you want, but you can't come and write "Sense 3.5/ICS , this, this, this and this doesn't work, but it's perfect".
As far as I'm concerned, the scale goes like this: unusable - bad - average - good - perfect. I hope meaning of perfect is self explanatory?
If the op states that he is giving away his phone, Sense 3.5 roms don't have nothing to look for here. Giving away phone with some of it's features severely limited is insanity.
It is you Sense 3.5 users who mixed up priorities here, not I. If the thread was titled "most eyecandy" rom I'd be silent.

I wasn't giving the OP a recommendation for a Sense 3.0/3.5-ROM, I was recommending him a Hybrid (2.1/3.0). And this I can do with pure conscience because the ROM I'm using right now (InsertCoin) is way faster than the Stock-ROM that was originally on the Desire and i havent experienced anything thats not working yet (no reboots, no failures, ... everything is working fine).
Yeah, maybe the Sense-ROMs you are not bashing are a bit faster than the ISC and Revolution Hybrids but there you have an uglier ui, so you have to balance.
Maybe you should testing a Hybrid for yourself because now you are just assuming things.

I want her to have 2.3, and there is no good official 2.3 ROM from HTC. So I guess I might as well try a girlfriend-friendly 2.3 ROM, preferably one that "just works" and that I don't have to help her with a million times. If you can recommend such a ROM, it would be great.
I agree with you that eye candy is not the most important thing here. Usability and stability is. Unfortunately, stock android have usability issues with simple things such as the dialer and the keyboard. And Android 2.3 is a must.
I will never buy her an iPhone, so that's not an option.
What do you recommend?

That is a very bold statement to make when talking with someone with 217,71 times your post count here
I did that, when they were popular, IC was on my phone for a whole 15 minutes before restoring nandroid backup of my AuraXTremeGinger I used at that time. You can feel when it was placed in past. To be honest, I didn't get to the post where you recommended anything. It was enough for one which spends as much time as me reading these threads to read a couple of the first ones and catch the drift of where is it going. After that I just scroll real fast through the thread. No Stock rom recommendations? Check. Commence bashing.

[Q] will there be PLAIN gingerbread??

Hi!
First of all i want to say Hi to all desire z / g2 users! Recently i have bought desire z - before i was an g1 user - and i've loved it. BUT...
I have never used HTC SENSE before, and now i know for sure - hate it. To big, to complicated. What i like is just simple Android GUI. So...my question is: does any Devs are working on plain desire z (hopefully gingerbread) rom? And is there any new, stable and fast rom without sense or miui?
[Edit] oh! I believe i didn't make myself clear....i know, that i can install launcher pro or adw, but all stuff from sense is still there...dialaer, sms app, even keyboard pisses me off....i want as plain as it can be ginger - is CM7 the only way for me??

Right now I think all stock roms are CM7 based. If you want pure stock it sounds like your may have to wait until someone roots the official gingerbread release for you to flash.
For the record CM7 with the stock launcher had been fantastic for me.

I've never used brand new phone before, so that's why, if i finally apply non_htc_rom, i want it to be as close to my expectations as possible.
Ok. So - i have to wait for rooted gingerbread...meanwhile i'll read something more about CM7. On g1 and CM5/6 i had a lot of stability and performance issues such as problems with g-sensor, touch display hangs etc., thats why i'm trying not to apply this rom....but.....SENSE UI is horrible....i think in a few days i will perform upgrade to cm7 to see what it's worth!
Once again - thanks for reply

You cannot compare the G1 cm5/6 experience to the G2 cm6/7 experience. I also had the G1. It was a great phone in its time. It did not have the hardware to run those roms properly though. It is a testament to the cm team that we even had it to begin with. The G2, however, is perfectly capable of handling these roms and does so exceptionally.
My wife has a G2 as well. She keeps hers stock. At times, I grab her phone in the car to pull up maps or something. It is immediately apperant the difference in the feel of the phone. My phone running cm7 rc4 is noticably smoother and faster.
I think that if you give cm7 a go, you will not be disappointed.
Just so you know, multiple sites are reporting today that the g2 will receive it's update this quarter.

Here's the article (or one of them) stating "an HTC spokesperson" says that an official "vanilla" Gingerbread ROM is coming to the G2 this summer:
http://blogs.computerworld.com/18102/htc_t_mobile_g2_gingerbread?source=rss_cwbloggers
Sounds a bit rumour-y right now. But good to hear, nonetheless.
As already stated, try CM7, it is running PERFECT for me!
..... also this may be of interest to you.....
from http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/content.php/279-VillainROM
A priority for me will be a new Gingerbread vanilla build, which will replace the current GingerVillain. I don’t expect work to start on this until mid-April, so please bear with me.

Is gingerbread 2.3 officially out for the Desire yet?

I have tried numerous custom 2.3 roms but each one eventually causes me a headache in the end. I honestly do appreciate all the hard work going into these roms but unless somebody can point me in the direction of a 99.9% troublefree 2.3 I will have to stick to 2.2 for the time being.
no, 2.3 is not officially out yet, i know the roll out time in the UK as at some point at the end of the year (after all the naff branding the carriers have to put on them)
end of this month (or sometime in the next few months) is the most proposed theory at the moment.
when the official 2.3 release/RUU etc. comes out that'll probably lead to a few more stable roms IMO
AdamG's Oxygen and his DevNull have both been 100% trouble free for me.. Tried one of those?

The popular stock android roms out right now are very stable and if you do happen to find a bug, there's usually aa update within the week to fix it.
I'm running ReflexS 2.0.7 and it's actually running very fast considering that it's running sense. I'm running it with cm7 hboot but it worked great with stock hboot too. I find that you really just have to try a few roms to try and get a feel for which one works best with your phone and your needs.

I wouldn't bet on the end of may.
They have always been mentioning end of month but june, not may.
Its about time for the update to come out we waited so long now and all other models have gotten just do it already im sick of waiting.
Honestly, if you don't mind losing Sense, then AdamG's Oxygen and Devnull are top of the shop. Both updated now to 2.3.4 and as hack-free as possible.
DevNull is as plain-jane as you can get, I personally prefer the extended power controls and pull-down notifications menu on Oxygen.
I've been using Oxygen since the first 2.3 build (since end of February) and have had one restart in that time and no freezes.
I have it running with LauncherPro 0.86 and it is smooth, bug-free and has very good battery over Froyo stock. I hammer it with wifi browsing, couple of hours of mp3 a day and my office has terrible signal. I generally finish the day on 40%+.

Well, when the Desire came out at first it was the best Android device around.
Add to that Sense is the least bad of all the custom UIs out there.
And like me, they might not have tried an AOSP rom until after having a Desire for a while.

I use RCMixSCM7/A2SD v2 ROM's by Robocik (the CM7 test3 version is sense 3.0)
or you can try InsertCoin CM7/A2SD v47 by baadnewz
I heard that this one is also pretty fast. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113070
You can try the roms by yourself and then decide which one is the best . Everyone is different and therefore has everyone a different taste .
I'm using InsertCoin cm7 1.08 on my HTC Desire and it works great. Gingerbread plus Sense 3.0 widgets etc
Only flashed my Desire once, but I would imagine once you've done it you can play around with it and flashing it with a diff ROM should be easier/less hoops to jump through.
I'm still using froyo, with gb, I always not enuf space for apps

Its a sense 2.1 & 3.0 hybrid and seems good so far. The reason I went for this over the other choices is that it only requires a 512mb ext3 partition where as the others require a 1gb ext3. If you used ROM manager to partition your sd card you'll probably have a 512mb partition
i dont like the sense roms much, but i fin redux to be a great rom!
it's fast, clean and simple!
I'm currently using the "Sense2.1+3.0 GB InsertCoin CM7 HBOOT/STOCK 1.0.8" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016940), and loving it. It's nice and fast and really smooth.
There's one version for the CM7 HBOOT and one for the stock hboot, so you can choose the one suitable to your setup.
I'd definitely recommend it but like Balu said, everyone's got different taste.
Here's a video of one of the earlier versions of the InsertCoin ROM.

The reason you are mocked is that you asked the equivalent of the question "What is the best car ?". It depends a lot on your own preference and what are you looking for. I see that you are from the States. Do you have a CDMA Desire ?

Overall Performance and the Camera Quality
Again, its a matter of preference. Some people like Cameras apps from other ROMs, or off the market. Performance is a mixed bag too. I never had much luck with Sense 3.0 or 3.5 ROMs with performance, but other people say it works flawless.
Just give him the advice that probably 90% of the people here would: try them out and find out what works for you.
But if your looking for an opinion... the best cameras I've used have been in sense roms, but other than for the camera I can't stand sense, never cared much for eye candy.
I prefer speed and stability so I would say the best is aosp, aokp, cm, even miui. But never sense... again just adding my 0.02$

Thankyou alot guys now I could review for my tests on Monday
If you're talking bout something at the level of ICS 4.0.4, then I would say 'performance' wise AOKP is going to be better in general, not as much 'eye-candy' and such you'd get from Sense. (As far as I know, no Sense ICS rom has a working camera yet).
But if you're talking Gingerbread and earlier, it's really going to depend on the custom Rom. For example AOKP is most likely going to out perform a stock sense install, but a custom Sense Rom could be on par.
Guess it depends on where your priorities are, do you need more eye candy, or are you aiming more for raw performance/functionality?

I want everyones opinion on there "favourite rom" for the DHD, in one thread! Make it easy to choose between and to get an idea on why each rom best suits there needs in one place! I seem to be able to find this but over 30 different threads! why not make it easy I say!! Hopefully the man in the black cape can see the dilemma

I HAVE TRIED LEEDROID, I DIDN'T MIND THE ROM AT ALL WAS SMOOTH, I ENDED UP WITH ANDROID.PROCESS PORBLEMS IN THE END WITH CONTACTS, HTC SYNC AND THE DAILER
I am using Runny Xtreme Surprise - v3.0.0, had it for a while, and it is smooth, and battery is good too
But I am looking at changing, created a few to many bugs messing with settings from rom market apps, Have to reinstall rom, decided on a change! Something just as smooth but with more options with the settings

Before Virtuous Team released their 3.0 kernel, there was no much choice for me but to go for gingerbread.
Image quality is an important factor for me when flashing a ROM and AOSP/AOKP versions never succeed
to satisfy me. Perhaps it's the camera-chip but when using, for example, LC's IceColdSandwich my images
have a lot of noise, blurriness and shakiness (same for other ICS ROMs). Touch-to-focus is something I
cannot live without as well and best support for that is found from Sense 3.5 Camera application.
Now that I have an option of going for full Sense 4.0 with a working camera, that's what is most likely
to become my new "number one". If you like your UI to be 'fluid' and fast-responding, you might not want
to install the Virtuous Infinity just yet but wait it to proceed to beta-stage. ICS is just awesome when you get
the full Sense experience with it! Among Sense 3.0-3.5 ROMs mike's ARHD with RC3D-tweaks is my
absolute favorite. It is the smoothest Sense ROM around and has awesome performance.
What comes to nonsense (he he) ROMs: I've tried quite a few of them, but the features (such as camera)
arejust not as rich as with Sense. Surely you get a better performance but for what? If you don't run on MIUI,
you phone will very likely end up looking pretty ugly with all the old version of apps and launchers from
wherever. MIUI looks nice but I don't like the apple concept, which means no appdrawer and eyecandy over
usability. If you don't mind great looking themes and like the idea of downloading an appdrawer from the
store, MIUI might be the thing.
To make it short:
Virtuous Infinity Alpha1 if you want the full Sense 4.0 with a working camera but don't mind little lagginess.
Android Revolution HD if you're not so much into ICS and like to have a good performance and response.
MIUI if you like your device to look good, not to drain too much battery, and to feel like an apple product.
IceColdSandwich if you want a fast, reliable and finished ICS ROM with stock look and a plain camera.
Hope this is any help to you. Happy flashing!

I have downloaded Coredroid to try (I think battery power might be an issue there)
also downloaded Energized
I agree I wouldn't install a rom without all features working, Well I reckon I'll give the ICS ago at least see how she blows!!! If its not my cup of tea, I like your idea on the Android Revolution HD,

Have tried Android Revolution HD as well, I found it to be a good choice as a daily rom, without bugs.
Will have to try Virtuous Infinity Alpha1

I will have to try Virtuous Infinity Alpha1 as a stable ROM, I have been using JellyBeen by randomblame (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778202). His ROM is working great so far but is still far from a finished build.
I have tried Andriod Revelution HD

I tried Revolution HD on my DHD since lunch time today, and I have to agree that its simple and is powerful, battery good too! I'm intrigued, not sold! Does anyone else have the same thought, that the settings in notifications would be much better with a lot more settings and with the shortcut when you press and hold down a setting in notifications, it takes you through to contols of that function in the main settings!
Something so simple yet saves so much time! I find that odd, I am hoping 7.0.4 isn't the most recent version, haha, besides that, so far impressed by Revolution HD, seems great

LOL teichopsia why you scaring the guy for
OP, just flash the ROMs you think would be the best for you. Generally people start with Cyanogenmod and go from there. Try the BlackICE ROM, it's pretty cool for a GB ROM. Ice Cold sandwich is the best is ROM at the moment. Or, if you're like me and want to have the breeding edge software, JellyTime is Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.1) which even the GS3 doesn't have yet (although the ROM does have one or two quirks to it

Lol.... It seems that I was in a bad mood that week. Besides that there was a bunch of new members posting the same questions one after the other.
In other words,
I was being sucked down an infernal abyss, until a few members posted comments, links on being helpful. Reminding me what is was to be new.
Go on over to the inspire section and test out absolution. Let me know what you think.

Well Seems I may have missed one during my cleaning.
Ok OP the reason no one can give a straight answer is because there really isnt one. Each device will work differently even when running the same rom. This is due to personal apps and set ups. Not to mention the different hardware in each device. Not all devices are made equally. The best advice you will get is to find a few that you think look good (lmao) and try each one out for a few days. Then before you try a new one make a nandroid backup so you can easily go back. Then make up your own mind on what is the best rom for you.
Just remember to to read the thread a bit for any issues you may come across.
