Tired of locked bootloader, call me a sellout. - Acer Iconia Tab A100

I have decided that I can not deal with the locked bootloader on this tablet and have chosen to sell it (got more then I paid). The A100 is a wonderful tablet and has great potential but the lack of developers and dead end bootloader is a showstopper.
I am waiting for another brand 7 inch tablet to arrive by Fedex later this week. It has the same basic specs as the a100. CWM is already available and there is a small amount development going on. But it is new on the market. No ICS yet. There is some talk in getting CM9 on it.
It is really disappointing that the 10 inch tabs are getting all of the glory, I really think the 7 inch is the best size for carrying with you.

see yah!
The locked bootloader isn't a big deal for me because the tab already does everything I want it to do. The only thing that could make this tab already better than what it is would be the unlocked bootloader that way we could look at different rom options (but to be honest the rom that's currently there isn't that bad at all). Granted it would be nice to overclock, but its already pretty fast and I haven't really had any hiccups while using it since I released the custom build.prop (except for using hdmi which I'm working on).
I think eventually we'll get some sort of work around for the bootloader working, its just a matter of time. I'm definitely not going to drop this tab though just because we don't have it figured out yet.
I do wish there was someone other than myself that's taken an interest in this tab that knows their way around custom recoverys and bootloaders since that's not one of my strong points but at least I'm trying to help.
I wont call you a sell out, but I will wish you good luck with your new device and happy modding!

Never really understood why people have to announce that they're dumping their device and leaving the forum. Has anyone ever seen a community beg a person PLEASE keep their tablet/phone/etc and stay?

I agree, but everyone is entitled to thier opinion. I personally don't care how bad you thought it sucked and what you're replacing it with. If you don't have anything useful to contribute don't bother posting. For me these "goodbye" types of posts fall into that catagory.
That's just my own opinion though.

I actually like my A100 and plan to hold on to it for a while.
Is that okay with everyone?
(Of course if someone wanted to pay me enough for it so I could buy the next, better thing....)

to OP good luck with your future endeavors as I am sure you will have new things you will complain about your new device seeing how you would post something like this.
And crossix thank you for all your hard work. I really wish I knew more than I could to help you and others out but I try to put in where I can. We need more devs like you around here.

I think its a simple way of letting their frustrations go. I was just doing some research on this tab as I'd like to have a nice little 7 inch carry along but not so sure about it with the locked b/l and bad viewing angles.
Is the screen as bad as it looks in videos? From what I've seen and read this thing runs very smooth and lagfree, am I right about that?
Thanks for any info.

Theres really only 1 bad angle which is about 120 degrees towards the bottom. It gets darker. So jus flip it 180 in landscape and youre good. Left, right and top angle are great IMO. As far as speed. Here's one I posted....you be the judge....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-99O4-gmQ6E&list=UUHqepxR6_suYYKySqKxymDg&index=3&feature=plcp

The only lag I've ever experienced was when I was on the early 3.2 builds. After upgrading to the latest 3.2.1and running the custom build.prop, the only bit of lag I've seen is playing 720p video in flash and 720p software mode video on hdmi out. But my atrix had the same issue, so I think its just a limitation of stock tegra2. I resovled it on my atrix by overclocking, so if we ever find a method of running a custom kernel I think it'll be resolved.

I have never experienced any lag whatsoever in the a100. also, i have heard so much about the viewing angles, and as aznmode said, there is only one slightly off angle and there is no reason whatsoever to have to be looking in that angle unless you just choose to do so. I have several tabs and i use the acer more than the others combined because it does everything that is needed and it is very easy to carry around. Also I have hear reviewers complain about the battery, however i can useit on and off all day long without charging and also it charges twice as fast as most. i wouldn't hesitate to purchase this tab again, i would just love to see some more development. The rom itself is very fast and extremely stable, the only real complaint that i have about the tab is that i would like to see usb host mode working. i also wanted to say thanks to crossix and all of the other devs that have put alot of work into it so far!

If you have a big microsd card, you could swap it with the internal memory (I really need to add direct links to these things to my signature..).

Just out of curiosity has anyone contracted koush to see if he can unlock the bootloader. On his website he says that he just needs the tablet for about a week. I know that you guys have been working on it and have made some bits of progress, but maybe a new set of eyes might be helpful. I do support for two as we got the kids some for Christmas but I need to leave them stock so they can't get into and erase stuff they need for them to run.
Don't want to step on anyone's toes or if this has already been attempted just disregard.
Thanks to the developers for their work.

I started this thread when I was really pissed off at the A100. Between my touch screen failing and the many hours spent to get a working tun.ko on it. Due to the encrypted kernel I could not even load a kernel module.
To explain I need tun.ko and advanced routing so I can connect to a Cisco VPN for work. While waiting for my tab to be returned from service went to Best Buy and picked up the Samsung Galaxy tab plus, installed VPNC and it worked with no problem.
The A100 is a really nice device and for 90% of people it is perfect. I actually preferred the styling compared to the Samsung slab, but VPN is the reason I wanted a tab in the first place.
I wish you all good luck with cracking the bootloader.

I plan on keeping my a100 at least until I can afford a tegra 3 tab.

I use remote desktop with a virtual pc setup to connect up to my works Cisco VPN and it works really well, especially when I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse connected up to the tab (I also use this same setup with my atrix), it works great!
I also use this same setup for one of my clients Nortel Networks VPN which doesn't work at all on android nativity. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the a100 but for the price its hard to find fault with it.

Agreed the price is right.
The virtual PC solution is not an option since I not only need it for RDP and VNC but also to sync my contacts, email and calendar. I was connecting to my home VPN and then jumping through to work but I need my contacts and email in somewhat a real time solution.

Nice device though!
I agree but that site "expansys" from what i read in the Samsung Tab price posts jacks the prices up anyways. Lets hope its cheaper.
Ive noticed these things have insanely inflated prices any time a cell radio in is in the spec listing. I have no intentions of buying one for that purpose.. that is a bit stupid. Wifi would be just fine.. specially considering my dinc can supply it's 3g service without any extra monthly fees
Though it's awesome they rooted it already.
it'll be rooted and sim unlocked in no time because it uses all the same from Galaxy S

Its not just that. Anywhere that is currently listing a sale price is utterly guessing. They genuinely have no information to work with. And then expansys are adding 200 on top of total guesswork.
Also, rootedness = awesomeness Can't wait to get this thing running. We might even get Cyanogen for it. That'd give it some real chops. Full bluetooth support + sixaxis controller/wiimote + SNES Emulator + 7inch screen/HDMI + 7 hours of battery = ultimate in traveling awesome. All of the gaming stuff gets better hooked up to one of these. ScummVM, emulators, tower defense, even suduko and mahjong is cooler.
My real dream tho... BT mouse and someone to port C&C . Thats one hell of a train ride *drools*

Someone elsewhere in these forums posted a link to someone who had managed to get quadrant scores, and it would indeed seem to be plagued by the same kind of problems as the stock SGS, primarily because they haven't changed a whole lot. Luckilly since it is so similar to SGS, it strikes me that the current lag fixes might not even need to be changed for the SGS, aside from initially needing a manual update.zip route until someone makes a specific one-click app, since I imagine the Tab will have different usb drivers.
Still, anything you can do to make the SGS rock harder, you can near certainly do to the Tab. Just have to wait for the units to show up and the chefs to get to work.
Wait so am i mistaken that they are removing just voice dialing.. meaning like.. "call mike jones" and it auto calls.. or are they removing the actual PHONE capibility in the tab? If they do that Im not gettign it, i was all hyped that I could have a tablet that was sweet and have a phone, no need for both I tell you that.

Who actually likes this phone?

I mean, common, with all the people asking if they should get an iphone or this, or what's better, this or the nexus, or all that other crap, am I the only one who realizes the absolute potential of this phone and how it pwns (excuse the crude terminology xD) basicly every other device out there including the crackberries and isucks, like just today I got about two hours total talk time, bout 5 hours online, wifi on for about 4 hours, bout 5 hours music through bluetooth and bout two through 3.5mm (damn thing lasted longer then my s10-HD), Data/gps and bluetooth on all day and going on 15hours uptime with 22% left on battery.
It performs extremely quick, compatible with basicly everything droid and ahead of the current market including the new nexus in specs, what's to question? The fact that carriers are being slow to release an update?
We already know that itl be comming fully touchcrapped out, and most people on this forums definitely aren't experienced enough to lay their hands on a system file let alone build a rom and will have to wait till someone releases a AOSP style build, with that being said, we don't need the carriers, only the drivers, then we can port what we need, so, why all the complaining, I say simply, if if you question the purchase, go for the alternitave, you probably couldn't handle the device properly anyways.
Opinions? And keep it clean, believe it or not, I'm actually going for a "healthy" discussion xD
I choose this one.

I can close to literally do anything and EVERYTHING with it.
A side note is that this is Android, and if you're not too bright then you're just wasting your phones potential and would be better off with an iPhone.
Idk why so many ppl worry about these lines and blobs, you obviously have to look for them in order for them to get annoying... Either that or I don't have them as bad and atrocious as others say they are.

Even compressing large zips are a breeze on it, and even with apps like android hexeditors and droidedit (notepad++ for droid with awesome features basicly) you don't even need a pc really xD you can basicly do what you need right from it,
haven't turned on my pc in about 3 days, on fibre optics and 802.11n router, I burnt through 400gb on my bandwidth last month xD)

Love the phone, I get bored pretty easily but have had this phone for a while now. Maybe it's the wait to see what ROMs come out of it (knowing Eugene is working on cm7 is great). Maybe it's just that there really isn't anything better at the moment for me.

As for the lines and blobs...after flashing newer kernels with updated skyrocket drivers it is reduced quite a bit.

Ye I love the lil things in crapwizz like turning of auto brightness and holding the status bar to adjust, and other **** like that, the GUI is to big in my opinion, icons are huge, fun to theme though, got CS5 so pngs are really fun
CM9 will definitely please a lot of people that's for sure, I just want drivers its pretty bad when I can build ICS for my old ass 3g lg (fun times.. good old days..) and I can dev all I want but its useless without proper sources xD
Those with like first edition s2x are probably having the blobs worse, samsung being cheap again, (look at the nexus..)
Find an excuse to RMA, that aughta do it
@christ1119
Ye it sucks... they look ballin woulda looked weird in a ballistics case though I guess..
I, too, love this phone. There's not a phone on the market I would rather being using.
It's got the best hardware of any current phone (except the Skyrocket, and that's the same phone for all intents and purposes since I'm not on AT&T).
Only thing I miss from it is AOSP ROMs, but that's just software, and those will come in time.
Nice to see some positiveness on this forum.
I was just about to order a galaxy nexus and this thread is holding me off for a bit.lol
I effin love this phone as stated in this thread it does everything i need it to and more. The fact that it is a qualcomm does not bother me it is more then capable of tearing anything u throw at it up. And as far as the lines go i dont see them even on low setting nor do i care to look for them. I think this phone hulk smashs every phone out there and can only imagine how much fasrer it will be when we do get ics and use the processor to its full potential coupled with true hw accelaration. I agree with everything in the OP, to be honest, I had issues with GB and bugs on my other devices like my G2x (major issues on that, didn't wanna root it cause the dual core was pretty awesome but still did because of the ****ty stock rom). But ever since I switched to my SGS2, although being different from the original, no update to ICS in sight anytime soon, I'm least bothered by it, this is probably the most complete and bugless stock rom I've had on any device, I don't mind touch wiz one bit, know others don't like it but it's cool by me, there is a few things I wish I could change on it but ey it works, it's smooth and all the neat little features are actually pretty sweet. I actually use the default apps for just about everything, the response and performance is awesome compared to my previous phones (G2x response was pretty nice too btw just crappy bugs), only thing I had an issue with is my gps signal being lost at times or taking a while to lock on, but I kinda figured out why since it only happens in certain areas where I live, other than that, I'm pleased and loving my phone, not in much of a hurry for ICS since I can do everything I need to on the current system software and data speeds are awesome and the camera takes beautiful pics, what more could I ask for?
(Wish we had a little more support on accessories though, like cases and stuff like iPhones do, I have about 10 cases to choose from, most being plain, they have a bloody wall full of 'em in all designs and patterns you could think of, unfair much? Lol)

My Nexus S got stolen. Do I get a S3?

Hi Guys,
My trusty nexus s running Codename Android got stolen yesterday and I'm pretty bummed out. I had just uninstalled the tracker to test the batter life so it's pretty much gone!
The silver lining is that I have a reason to get a S3 now, but do I?
I am excited that CNA is testing a beta for the S3 which is cool, my favorite ROM.
From what I'm reading here, I guess the biggest concerns I have for the S3 are the lack of mass storage support? Is this true or does it use MTP like the tablets? also the size, it it going to crowd my pocket in my not so baggy jeans?
thanks for your thoughts on this.
It uses MTP, and it'll fit in your pockets just fine.

I'm a small dude and I wear "skinny jeans" (I don't go to the extreme of my balls bulging because my pants are so tight, but they are slim fit) and it fits perfectly fine in all my pants. On that note, I NEVER (even when I use to wear Jnco Jeans back in the '90s LOL) put anything in the same pocket as my phone, so, I don't know how to say if it does or doesn't crowd my pocket since I don't put anything else in there.
The phone is a comfortable fit in my pocket though.
It uses MTP but at least it has MicroSD. So for big files, I just take out the MicroSD and copy stuff over.

Okay. Picked up a new S3 from Tmobile today, they had a good deal going.
I'm a little bit freaked out by the flash counter thing (I've only ever had nexus phones) so I rooted it with the UVALH2 and seems good, now I get to debloat a little bit.
Looking for a way now to remove the annoying tmobile sounds on start and reboot, why do they have to be so abnoxious?
thanks for your recommendations, I really do like this phone.

About to pull the trigger on the T-mobile Note 3

I am about to buy this phone by this afternoon. I am coming from a Nexus 4. My reasons are as follows:
1. Need faster speeds (LTE).
2. Want an AMOLED screen
3. Need better battery life than what I have now
I fully intend to root this device and put CM 11 on it.
Please let me know what are the negatives that I'm in for. I've read some things, but nothing definitive that someone can point out. It would be much appreciated for those who actually have the phone to chime in and let me know what shortcomings you have with it so that I can ensure I'm making a sound decision.
Thanks as always!

Can't really think of any negatives. The Note 3 is a great phone. One negative you might get from someone is that the Amoled screens are notorious for having burn in. I have yet to experience this and haven't seen any reports of it on the Note 3. I don't think it's anything to worry about and I'm sure Samsung made sure the display on the Note 3 is top notch.
I just thought of a negative actually: in my opinion, the display is a bit over saturated, but it's not too bad.

Would you guys say that CM11 is stable enough in its nightly form to be used as a daily driver?
And believe it or not, my Nexus 4 has temporary burn-in even though it's an IPS screen, while my old SGS 3 which is an AMOLED did NOT have any burn in.

Haven't ran CM in a while. I feel I get a much more out of the phone on stock rom (with Google Now launcher and some Wanam Xposed modding)
but to answer your question, yes CM11 is very stable on the note 3 other than NFC not working. Unfortunately, you wont find any AOSP rom at this moment for the Note 3 that has NFC working. I can't really say if the latest CM11 nightlies are stable or not because I haven't ran CM in a while but there is the M5 build which I can tell you is stable. You can check the "official CM nighties" thread in the development section for more solid impute.
To make my answer more strait forward, CM11 nightless have always been stable enough for daily drivers (when I ran them) but I can't confirm that the latest builds are stable because I'm not running CM. Sorry if I'm confusing lol

Yes I do have a note 3. Best phone I have owned, no regrets, no negatives to me at least.

Sorry, I just really don't believe in CM on the Note. Other phones for sure. But not on the Note. Putting CM on the Note is like buying a BMW and replacing the entire car with after market. You don't get all the Sammy stuff that this phone was built for. There's alot of gimmicky stuff that nobody (well I don't) use, but there are some fundamental things that are built into TW like note app, and things like that. Using CM i have been able to get all that functionality back, but using alot of 3rd party apps that just don't work as smoothly. My big thing is Sammy trying to make you use it's apps and not giving you the option to map buttons, flicks, blah blah, with other apps like google search.
All in all it comes down to what you prefer and what makes you happy. Very good phone with premium build and specs.

I really appreciate the input.
I'm not too interested in all the gimmicks Samsung put on the phone to begin with. Even if I just get a phone with a big screen with CM11, as basic as it sounds, that'd be good enough for me.

I agree. The Note 3 really doesn't have any lag with the TW launcher (though i use Nova Prime) anymore and I use the Stylus and like some of the features it has. To me it's like neutering the phone removing the Spen functionality. Why buy the phone and remove a lot of the point of buying it? Plus TW has grown on me, the UI of CM is so bland it looks like a kids project. I used to use CM on my Bionic but ever since they went commercial and became Cyanogen Inc. i will not use CM anymore, not after what they pulled on developers where they basically stole a lot of the work that individuals did and let CM use to help polish their OS and didn't even at least give credit in most cases, like CM designed it.

Yeah. Alot of us were kinda perved about CM doing that, but in return, they gave us "MOUNDS" of stuff to work with. So it's kinda a win , win. Plus Koush works tireslessly still to help out both the forum and the community. So i feel like, whatever lil tweak i announced on here over the years, these guys probably already knew about. Love the XDA community.

Exactly. This is true. I'm not tied to the hip with CM, but they just update a lot more frequently. Honestly, any ROM that gives me the flexibility that CM does, I'd be cool with.
I'm with you guys about cm on the note, it was great on previous devices but it just doesn't do the note line any justice. With the specs these notes come with even the bloat fest that is TouchWiz runs flawlessly, I use both adw ex & nova prime myself for a slimmer and more customizable experience but honestly the stock tw launcher is much improved since it's first showing back on the original galaxy s phones.
You buy a note 3 for its beast like specs, it's premium quality sized screen and s-pen. Only people with tiny hands can claim they prefer an HTC one m7/m8. Don't even get me started about build quality on HTC since people will just put a plastic case over it anyways defeating the purpose. Besides note line have proven to be the real game changers when it comes to cutting edge performance and specs, I was yawning over all the other devices that were struggling to keep up with our note 3 lol

Yeah I can see and understand where you're coming from. I know Koush does a lot for the community but that bothered me a bit. Plus the note takes a step back with CM in my opinion so i haven't even been keeping up with CM actually.

what are the advantages of rooting my mobile phone

hey im thinking about rooting and flash a new rom
do you think it's worth it?
 this whole forum is dedicated to exactly that so of course we think it's worth it.
That's like walking into a church and asking if this is worth it, everyone is going to tell you yes.

What exactly are you looking for? Hard to know if its worth it for you! For me yes, its worth it. Is your "mobile phone" a 3xl?

I do it for one reason, to get a custom kernel with high brightness mode. I need that because I use mine for nav on my motorcycle and need the extra brightness. So it is certainly worth it to me for that reason. It saves me from buying a waterproof GPS for the bike, which isn't cheap. Plus it is much easier to make custom routes on the phone.
You should look at what can be done with root and see if those things are if any value to you.

From experience the benefits are negligible at this point. They use to be useful years ago when Roms were exciting because they added a bunch of features.
You don’t have to look hard to see that the number of users rooting and flashing roms has dropped dramatically.
Loved It
Thank you ..
for me it's ad blocking, hands down. AdAway makes internet connected apps so much more pleasant, so much do that using other people's unrooted phones is a terrible experience to me now.
aside from that, it's tinkering with the system software, being able to tweak some games (REROLLING *cough*), and customizing the phone UI/sounds to your heart's content.

Adblocking is the biggest reason for me. You could always have an always on VPN, but battery would be killed.
Also, white UI is the worst thing to ever hit Android. Even stock rooted is enough when you can use a black UI.
Also, running bash and python scripts with full access to modify my filesystem and run utilities like an ssh server locally, is a win.
If root ever becomes impossible, I might as well use an iPhone.
