Replacement for stock 1.0 apps

Hey guys,
Im trying to replace some basic applications that came with my SGS for some better ones and i could use some advice. Im listing the ones I use atm, if you think you have a better option please say so.
EDIT: I changed this first post to list app suggestions for each category. My intention is not to list ALL available options, just the better ones, of course this is really subjective and opinions may vary but im counting on your help. Feel free to suggest additional categories as well.
alarm/clock:
calculator: handyCalc (free), realCalc (free)
calendar: stock android calendar (pls share the .apk), pure grid calendar (€1,29), smooth calendar (free)
camera: vignette (demo free/UK£2.99), camera 360 (free/pro US$3.99)
ebook reader: aldiko (free/premium US$2.99)
file manager: astro (free/pro US$ 3,99), root explorer (UK£ 2,50)
IM: nimbuzz (free), fring (free)
launcher: launcherpro (free/plus US$2.99)
lock/unlock screen: widgetlocker (US$1.99), no lock (free), executive assistant (US$ 5,99)
messaging/SMS: chomp (free), handcent (free)
music player: N1/stock android player (pls share the .apk)

web browser: dolphin/dolphin HD (free), xscope (lite free/US$2.99)
Feel free to suggest any other "must have" apps that doesn't match any of these categories.
Thanks
Rui
Calendar ... pure grid calendar
Im... fring
File manager... root explorer
Weather.. beautiful home
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Thanks for your reply. Didn't know about that root explorer, its amazing thanks!
For an application to actually replace the calendar there's stock android one, should find it on xda somewhere.
Nice list anyhow, also looking for some replacements so I'll be watching.
Music Player: N1/stock Android player is pretty good, works better with headset controls as well, found it on xda somewhere
Video Player: Just downloaded mVideoPlayer (free), pretty good, more options than the crappy Sammy default, actually changes screen orientations! (I hated how the Sammy one didn't)
Calendar: Smooth calendar widget (free), I like it, and I just didn't feel like paying for Pure Calendar
You didn't mention podcasts but if other ppl need to know, Doggcatcher is expense but totally worth it. I tried literally every other android podcatcher and they just didn't have the features and the simplicity of Doggcatcher. (and the headset control capability!)
Ya and root explorer and beautiful widgets are must haves.
I checked out mVideoPlayer and it really is a good alternative... and FREE! Thanks!
Maybe i should edit my first post so it contains all sort of apps? And keep adding nice suggestions?
Lock Screen = Widget Locker (please buy) + No Lock App (Free) = FTW
I much prefer Executive Assistant for lock screen.
Looks nice and clean, plus you have the option of using pin code and dot pattern at the same time (on the lock screen press back for pin dialog or home for dot pattern). Either one will unlock the phone.
Here's my lockscreen
added category with your suggestions, thanks guys
stock android 2.1 music player
Found the stock android 2.1 music player on xda

@ferd: Yeah its quite stupid, that you have to touch the pictuer and then to slide to answer the call..
Maybe someone can change it in the sourcecode and make a completly new ROM..

No its got an answer or decline button on incoming call, oh well i decided to pay for the app and use it as it serves its purpose
Oho, because the version i tested, was different..
You saw the picture in full screen and after pressing on it, you have the standard call-screen and there you have to pick up..
Can you refund this app (within 24 hours) if you are not satisfied? (Not every app has the feature, afaik)
you can refund it, i did it then decided to buy it again
updated with some info i found here and some by myself

Bible Apps for the Archos 101 Tablet

I have had my Archos 101 a few days now and am really impressed. Does wat it says on the tin and then some. Mine is a completely stock out of the box set up. I want to make sure I get the best out of my tablet so wanted to ask what the bible apps should be for the 101. Maybe we could create a list of those essential apps for tools, utilities, games etc......
As a newbie I havent much to add, other than installing Angrybirds which I find utterly addictive
ConnectBot
AndroIrc
Port Scanner
Shark
Plume
The essentials tools for me.
In every case you need a good file explorer like ES File Explorer.
And a tool to clean the caches of apps like Apps2SDFree.
Other apps depend on your interests.
For me there is
- Google Maps
- Google Mail
- SoundHound (recognition of music titles)
- Catch (online saving of notes)
- Andricious (online saving of internet bookmarks)
etc.
Can I strongly recommend you change the title of this thread?
What about browsers. I have tried Miren, but it seemed clunky and interfered with my live wallpaper settings.... What else might I try....
So my list is hotting up. It now includes:
ES Explorer (Having some problems with ftp though)
ES Task Manager
Fancy Widget
Dolphin HD
Next I want a Desktop controller - any thoughts?
These are the Bible apps I have installed so far:
-- Bible.is (has audio Bible)
-- Bible (YouVision)
-- And Bible
-- Quick KJV Bible
-- BibleScope
I'm looking for a powerful Bible app (don't mind paying for good apps!) that has lots of good features:
-- reference verses
-- highlighting
-- bookmark
-- concordance
-- Bible dictionary
-- search (for similar topics/verses)
-- topical index
-- maps
Any suggestions ... ???

[Q] What would be the best set of apps to install at first ?

Hi,
Coming from symbian/winmo phones, the S2 will be my first android phone, what would the best apps to install right away -input, launcher, navigation, etc. (I don't care about games, and I don't mind paying for my apps).

Pulse is the best news app.
Google Maps is the best nav app.
Launcher Pro is my favorite home replacement.
Google Goggles
Opera Mini
Callmeter NG (data count calls sms..)
Astro (file manager)

Bit useless question to me, although understand that your asking for it, Ill try to give an impression what apps are needed for me and why
adfree: no more adds, even in paid games etc.
astro: mentioned before, best file manager
chrome to phone: send stuff from your chrome browser directly to your phone (note: works with both chrome and firefox!)

I have some more stuff, but these are my recommendations!
Thanks tennis11, okorn and stitch !
I understand your point stitch, it is a little bit like if I was asking "what would be the qualities I should be looking in a GF ?" We are all different, and our choices in anything including what we install in our phones directly reflect who we are, what are our personal interests, etc.
Still, if I could avoid going through 3454 web sites and 234 threads to discover what's the best rss reader or nav app, I would be very happy
Therefore merci beaucoup for the time you spent answering me guys !
and on the top of it, you will see a fair share of complete android noobs (like me) who juste made the move because of THIS phone !
Sorry in advance for the large number of basic questions we will ask the seasoned android warriors over here...
i'm one of these noobs too
thanks for asking JohnDoe01, and thanks for answers

Yeah I do understand, as I mentioned, thats why I gave my complete list. For rss reader you might want to try BeyondPod podcast manager, its the best rss feed reader imo.

Pulse news reader has a nice layout. Free aswell

On games add Angry Birds, but be careful...dont give the phone with Angry Birds installed to your GF, she wont five it back

AudioPlayer
MIUI player (don't think that this is in the Market, but there is a link for it on this forum)

BuzzBox

ConnectBot (SSH/Telnet)

tTorrent (lite). The paid version allows unlimited d/l whilst the free one allows a max 250kB/ps, which is quite adequate.
All these app are available for free on the Market (bar MIUI player, which is freely available). however some have paid versions that offer better features. LauncherPro comes to mind. I bought this.

Doom Live Wallpaper works perfectly and looks great on the SGS2 screen.

That was a nice collection. Allow me to add more.
In alphabetical order:
1Mobile Market: As great as the normal Android market, has some additions IMHO.
aMetro: Subway maps for various countries.
App Update Notifier: As the name says. You can also schedule updates check.
AppRemover: Best uninstaller out there.
BatteryCalibration: As the name says.
Cache Cleaner: As the name says.
Dual File Manager: Best file explorer IMHO (Root Explorer is great too if you want to access the system, but this one has a better interface).
FasterFix: A fix for applying fast GPS lock.
HD Wallpapers: As the name says.
JuiceDefender: Best battery saver out there, truly makes a difference.
Maxthon: An excellent browser indeed. As well as xScope.
MoboPlayer: Best flv videos player (Am not sure if SGS2 plays flv by default).
Mp3TaggerPro: Best tags editor for your music tracks.
MultiTasking Pro: Visual task switcher (Something like the good old task manager, back in WinMo days ).
PhoneUsage: Statistical reports for your usage (calls, SMS, and data).
Plume: The very best Twitter app out there.
PowerAMP: The very best music player out there.
SD Speed Increase: As the name says, makes a difference in reading/writing speeds.
Smart Keyboard: Best one IMHO, as well as SwiftKey.
Where's My Droid: Excellent one, if you lost your phone, just SMS it & it will ring.
NoLED is pretty handy - it shows a little sprite on your screen if you have a missed call or unread text etc, and uses very little power because of the SAMOLED+. A bit like the glowing trackball on the Nexus One.
can i download the apps on the pc and then install it on my phone?
If yes how?
and where can i get the apps to download from?
Try market first.
I personally think spark 360 is an excellent app for xbox live costs about a pound but well worth it if u have xbox

Music downloader and other requests
I've just arrived at Android, having spent the last 18 months with the HTC HD2 and would like to try to find some similar apps to Winmo ones that I particularly miss (I don't miss the phone though...).
My wish list is for the best Android versions of;
Scilor's groovedownloader - absolutely superb free mp3 downloads
SPB Backup - saved my sanity on many occasions
iGo Primo - Great offline sat nav
That will do for now, if there are any suggestions out there.
I am loving this phone.

[Q] Must have apps

I am new to Android and just got my DINC2 this past week. What are peoples opinions of "Must Have" apps?
BTW, I work at a help desk, so if there are help desk specific apps that might be cool.
TIA!
Your question is pretty broad. It's about the same as asking that about your PC, and for both, you're going to get as many different responses as there might be people responding. So maybe the better question is what do you want to do with your Inc2 and maybe we can point you in some directions for some apps to fill that role.
As an example, I use my Android device to help me manage my diabetes. I use an app called OnTrack for this. This is a must-have app for me, but most people won't need nor use it.
It's also my primary portable media device, which I use a few different apps for.
As for anything to help with a helpdesk related job, I can only think of email access if it is externally accessible, and a task management app. The stock email client will likely work for your email access. For task management, I've yet to find one I was really happy with, but Astrid is pretty good, and I'm currently in the process of getting to know Taskos.
Thanks for your reply!
I kept the question broad on purpose. I have been using my iPod Touch and my wife's iPhone for years so I could come up with a list of my "Must Have" apps for those. The way I figure it is a smart phone is similar to a computer, but probably doesn't have dozens and dozens of apps installed (or at least not used daily). So I was hoping people would list their 5-10 most used (useful) Android apps.
My co-worker who has been using his Android device for a few years suggested:
- LookOut antivirus (like it so far)
- Android Assistant (dito)
- Launcher Pro (haven't taken the time to customize, so sticking with Sense for now)
- Barcode Scanner
After a little Google'ing I installed the following:
- Facebook App (just because)
- Angry Birds (loved the iOS version)
- arcMedia (seems decent, lots of codec support)
- ASTRO File Manager (UI seems very intuitive)
- Google Music (I got an in invite to the Beta)
- Pandora (use this on my laptop a lot, thought I'd try it on my DINC2)
- ShopSavy (again, loved the iOS version)
- xda
A few off the top of my head:
Titanium Backup - Requires root, but great for freezing bloat and backing up the device
Root Explorer - Doesn't necessarily require root, but is handy for going through the file system
EverNote - Keeps a LOT of my recipes handy, as well as notes for other things
DropBox - I occasionally need info there, so it's really quite handy for that
Google Reader - For reading my RSS feeds
Skype - Not critical, but handy when I'm without cell signal but have wifi
Titanium Media Sync - Keeps my pics backed up to Dropbox
XDA and DroidForums apps - Well, gotta be able to catch up when mobile
There are others I use, but honestly, I have found the stock apps cover most of what I need nicely. I will say that although I doubt I actually need it, I am playing around with JuiceDefender.
Clipper is one that I use a lot. The free version works excellent. It is a quickly accessible clipboard you can access from your status bar for all your log on data and different email signatures. I have to use several different email sigs depending on the level of security required for the recipients.
Well if all you want is a list of apps that people use regularly...
LauncherPro - Launcher/home replacement (paid version)
Slacker - Streaming music (the latest version blows, though)
Winamp - Better than the stock media player
Waze - Social mapping and realtime traffic
OnTrack - Diabetes oriented health management
eBuddy - Multi-protocol IM client
Arity - Advanced calculator
DriverDiary - Vehicle cost tracking tool (fuel, etc)
File Expert - File browser (I liked this one better than the other common ones)
Package Buddy - Shipping tracking tool (as in shipping packages)
Tweetdeck - Social networking app primarily used for Twitter
I don't do a lot of gaming, but I do some.
Wordfeud
Angry Birds
Live Blackjack

[Q] Set up my new ONE X, Introduce me.

New android One X owner. Had an iphone before and I'm a bit confused over certain things. I have done my homework.
I haven't found any appealing reasons to root the phone... But there's certain things I'd like to know to set up this phone!
One thing I am having trouble getting used to is that the space between the icons on droid is too big. Can it be fixed with or without root?
Is it possible to sort apps manually or into categories, i just find the A-Z/time sort choices.
Essential Apps, the best one for each own thing? Swiftkey 3 for keyboard, airdroid over ESfileexplorer, Avast for antivirus security(necessary?) Dropbox for cloud..
What softwares do you use to sync music, videos and other content. HTC Sync Manager or is there better?
Is there a page like idownloadblog that keeps you easily up to date, posts guides, apps, tweaks from both sides of the river. Official and pirate stuff.
MOD EDIT : As explained , we do not like warez on XDA
Asking a lot so help me with whatever you'd like I'll look aroound meanwhile Thanks,
u can find everything in here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps
Welcome to the Android world mate!
1. Try a custom launcher: for example Nova Launcher from play store. The problem might also be that you are used to the tiiiiny screen of your former i-device.
2. Launcher settings, don't know if it's possible on stock Sense launcher.
3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1938854
4. No knowledge on that area.
5. www.xda-developers.com (forget about the pirate stuff though)
6. No. At least you won't get any help here @XDA to find such site.
We have absolute zero tolerance on warez and other questionable content. You might get banned for requesting such things. If you have money to buy a 500€ piece of hardware, you must be able to afford a 1€ app. Right?
loved the nova launcher
i'm having a though luck finding a quick compose sms widget
gopro and handcent sucked, the things is , that i'd like is something like chomps sms (bitesms) quick compose but not in notification, on the home screen as a widget.
do you know any such widgets+
android is awesome, do not understand why appstore and cydia is so much more developed. cant even find a simple note taking app like writeroom..
One thing I am having trouble getting used to is that the space between the icons on droid is too big. Can it be fixed with or without root?
Try Apex too.
Is it possible to sort apps manually or into categories, i just find the A-Z/time sort choices.
Apex or Nova
Essential Apps, the best one for each own thing? Swiftkey 3 for keyboard, airdroid over ESfileexplorer, Avast for antivirus security(necessary?) Dropbox for cloud..
It was all depends on your preferences.
What softwares do you use to sync music, videos and other content. HTC Sync Manager or is there better?
Since you come from iOS, try AirSync + Doubletwist player to sync your itunes playlist.
Is there a page like idownloadblog that keeps you easily up to date, posts guides, apps, tweaks from both sides of the river. Official and pirate stuff.
up to date, guides, tweaks, mods just look here in XDA. if you cant find them, you're not reading them enough. hehe.
