So I've finally joined the club and boy am I stoked. So, what are the first things one should do e.g. apps to get, slight customisation, games etc, help your fellow comrade.
I don't know if this thread has been done before, if not, maybe it could be a sticky?
the first advice i could give to you is: read the forums
That's the beauty of WP7. There's no real customization to be done and no real apps to get. You're good to go!

How adorable, another android troll. There's also no lag, a good music player, no fragmentation (It's good to know I can't buy a new phone and have it be outdated next week) and hell, gaming has already about caught up with Android. You guys have more, we have better.

Ha. That wasn't really a troll. I just meant there's no setup or critical apps you need to get the phone running. Just grab whatever catches your eye from the market and you're golden. I like that aspect of the platform compared to Android. Until you want your phone to do something a specific way, it's bliss.

It depends on how you look at it.
Lacking the need for customization at a low level is good (Rooting to uninstall bloatware, etc.), but there are tons of instances where you have to hack the system up just to achieve trivial tasks. Adding Ringtons to you phone, accessing Camera Shutter options, changing the default Search Engine in the Browser (T-Mobile sets it to Google, and some Euro Carrier sets it to Yahoo!). Things like that. You can't even set a home page in the browser (so even though I can't stand searching through Google, there's no way to Set Bing as the home page and just open a new tab and search from there). The OS is literally devoid of options/settings that matter. Can't even toggle between EDGE and 3G to save battery without hacking the phone (and that hack doesn't even work for some phones).
These aren't deep customizations on any other smartphone platform, but for WP7 it requires going beyond rooting or jailbreaking an Android phone. It makes Android a bit easier to use than WP7 when you factor in OneClick Root apps and the ability to sideload applications without scouring threads/the internet for information to get this done (and installing a ridiculously big SDK on your computer - nevermind the fact that it requires a Windows PC as well).
Microsoft got it wrong.
The issue with Android settigs is not that there were too many. It's the way they are presented to the user. They're generally (especially in third party applications from independent devs) just thrown in the user face on one huge page. Decently organized options in groups or tabs... there's nothing wrong with that. They need to add tons of options for the system and stock applications, because making even trivial changes to some behaviors is impossible without going through more work than loading a custom ROM on an Android phone is right now.
Minimalistic is good if you do it right (iOS). Microsoft took it to the extreme and all it does is create a ton of usability faux pas.

Actually, you're trolling him.
He means that the stock functionality in the WP7 system is above and beyond Android and iOS. And it is. Everything comes from Microsoft, integrates nicely, and performs well. Aside from Microsoft and Manufacturer Apps (i.e. HTC, LG, Samsung Apps), there aren't that many apps that you need on a WP7 device to be functional - besides games. Twitter is missing in the People Hub, so that's a biggie, and the Facebook integration doesn't include all functionality, so you need that.
I suggest Twitter, Seesmic, Facebook (Seesmic because it includes both and is a nice hub to use when you don't need heavy duty FB/Twitter functionality). Microsoft has a ton of free apps that are useful. Your manufacturer (especially if HTC) will fill in many of the other gaps. Foursquare is in the Market.
Adobe Reader is in the market. Amazon and Amazon Kindle is there. eBay has a very nice App in the market. Messenger by Miyowa sadly I have to recommend it because it's the best of any Messenger app in the market at the moment.
If you have an HTC phone you don't need a weather app. The HTC Hub Tile is Live for Weather. If not, I recommend Weather bug or Microsoft's little weather app. Weather Channel is a 9MB app and I can't see how that ridiculous size is justified given how WeatherBug and Microsoft's weather app are both < 2MB (if not 1 or below).
Microsoft has a few free games to try out. AlphaJacks is like Words With Friends for Windows Mobile ("Try It" version is free forever, but Ad Supported). Haypi Kingdom is a nice strategy game that is multi-player (also available for iOS and Android, so there is no shortage of people to play with/against).

Eh, no real apps to get doesn't exactly sound right. It makes it sound like anything released on this platform is bad.
To OP though, Ilomilo and Twin Blades are the only games I have that live up to my XBL expectations (and sadly I have most of them) there are other good games but Ilomilo overall. other than that Netflix is the only other one I'd deem necessary.

Netflix is useless if you're not a subscriber, so I wouldn't deem it necessary at all. No one is going to subscribe to Netflix just to watch movies on a phone. Just doesn't make sense, IMO. If you're a subscriber, though, have it's nice to have...

I've tried A-to-B Navigation. It's useless for all practical purposes.

Also the Carriers are allowed to change the default search provider in Internet Explorer, so if you're a Bing user like me the usability of in-browser search is... terrible. T-Mobile Maps the Search button (and address bar search) in IE to Google and some Euro Carriers change it to Yahoo. Severely inconsistent and bad considering most people use the address bar to perform searches.
There is no option to change the default search provider. And performing that hack requires more manual labor than rooting and installing a custom ROM on an Android computer (and involves making registry changes, etc. on your Windows PC).

Not only that, but I wouldn't subscribe to any version of Netflix because of the cost. I watch maybe 2 to 4 rented movies a month. And some months, none. To have to pay a fee just to use Netflix is wasteful. Yet that's how NF works. I would, however, subscribe to NF if there was no fee. The only cost would be the rental charge.
I have to say the best game for Xbox Live is the Harvest. Feels like diablo with a sci fi twist. The bad thing though is if your a typical Xbox console gamer, you won't find much that will interest you on WP7.
I swear its a new puzzle or tower defense game ever week.
you can of course customise your lock screen, you could also install "pin to start" which apparently offers customised live tile (don't have it myself, not my type of thing". Apps wise, get the HTC You tube app if you have an HTC device, would also recommend pdf reader and the amazon kindle app (if you like books) beyond that, there are nearly 9000 apps to choose from - I think there are even a couple of "fart" apps if that floats your boat...........
I've already mentioned Adobe Acrobat Reader X and Amazon Kindle.
Not all applications have Live Tiles, and TBH without a Live Tile an app would have to be very important to merit a spot on you home screen (no one wants a home screen that scrolls for miles). I have issues keeping Seesmic/Twitter/Facebook on the Home Screen, for example, without a Live Tile. Games like AlphaJax are good cause the Tile is Live (tells you when it's your turn and how many games you have waiting on you, for example).
The HTC YouTube app is good, but it's only for HTC devices (I already said the Manufacturer apps were a given since they fill in obvious gaps in functionality i.e. YouTube, NotePad/List App, Flashlight, Attentive Phone, Live Weather Tile (HTC), Sound Enhancer, etc.).
The customization that I say is missing isn't really "customization" in the XDA-Developers sense.
Setting a Home Page in the Browser, Setting the Default Search Engine in the Browser, and Options for things like how long you want Toast Notifications to stay on the screen aren't any type of deep customization. It's simply a trivial setting that Microsoft needs to add. These things are missing all over the OS and need to be added in ASAP. It acually makes the OS a chore to use in many instances.
They also need to make carriers unable to alter the default search engine. It sucks for people who use a certain search engine, and makes it take 3x longer to perform searches if you don't want to go through Google. There just need to be an option for the three biggies (Bing, Yahoo, Google) or the ability to allow the bing homepage to set itself as the default search engine (or Yahoo, or Google).

Yeah I do understand, as I mentioned, thats why I gave my complete list. For rss reader you might want to try BeyondPod podcast manager, its the best rss feed reader imo.
I see that your French, you might want to check out the ratp and sncf apps as well.

aMetro: Subway maps for various countries.
App Update Notifier: As the name says. You can also schedule updates check.
AppRemover: Best uninstaller out there.
BatteryCalibration: As the name says.
Cache Cleaner: As the name says.
Dual File Manager: Best file explorer IMHO (Root Explorer is great too if you want to access the system, but this one has a better interface).
FasterFix: A fix for applying fast GPS lock.
HD Wallpapers: As the name says.
JuiceDefender: Best battery saver out there, truly makes a difference.
Maxthon: An excellent browser indeed. As well as xScope.
MoboPlayer: Best flv videos player (Am not sure if SGS2 plays flv by default).

MultiTasking Pro: Visual task switcher (Something like the good old task manager, back in WinMo days ).

Smart Keyboard: Best one IMHO, as well as SwiftKey.
Where's My Droid: Excellent one, if you lost your phone, just SMS it & it will ring.
NoLED is pretty handy - it shows a little sprite on your screen if you have a missed call or unread text etc, and uses very little power because of the SAMOLED+. A bit like the glowing trackball on the Nexus One.

Music downloader and other requests
I've just arrived at Android, having spent the last 18 months with the HTC HD2 and would like to try to find some similar apps to Winmo ones that I particularly miss (I don't miss the phone though...).
My wish list is for the best Android versions of;
Scilor's groovedownloader - absolutely superb free mp3 downloads
SPB Backup - saved my sanity on many occasions
iGo Primo - Great offline sat nav
That will do for now, if there are any suggestions out there.
I am loving this phone.
I thought Mango was suppose to bring full support for IM clients? Yet IM+ and WhatsApp are still awful. WhatsApp is such an incredible app on iOS and Android, using it on WP7 makes me cry literally on what monstrosity they've created. I get a toast notification for a new message, I click it and it takes a good 3-4 seconds for message window to open (why not instantly?) and it takes nearly 10-15 seconds for the new message to appear. It's the exact same behavior in IM+. It's very laggy and very choppy and a far cry from the general smoothness of Mango.
So can someone tell me why this is?
Developers are human beings prone to imperfection. Give it time, allow them to learn the ropes of this new platform and iron out the kinks.
The WhatsApp developers said they wanted the app to be available as soon as possible so they purposely made it barebones. They also promised several updates to make it on par with the other versions.
As for IM+ they haven't updated the app to Mango yet but it's coming.

i'm staying on IM+ cos miyota's messenger suck. but the new versions of IM+ has no more messenger support, and i doubt future updates will have it any time soon
so it's actually quite irrelevant to me cos
1. i lose messenger functionality if i update it
2. it is still quite laggy if i don't

i'm staying on IM+ cos miyota's messenger suck. but the new versions of IM+ has no more messenger support, and i doubt future updates will have it any time soon
so it's actually quite irrelevant to me cos
1. i lose messenger functionality if i update it
2. it is still quite laggy if i don't

I (and others) updated twice and still haven't lost WLM. The way I understand it, as long as you update and don't reinstall it stays there. But just in case you're unlucky I'm not telling you to go ahead and do it

I actually like having dedicated apps for IM, same for twitter. The only app I've stopped using is facebook because the implementation is quite complete in WP7.
I would say it's probably down to UI for me, I find IM+ easier to manage than the built-in messaging for whatever reason (same for twitter) but they really need to upgrade it to Mango.
Everything has gone downhill in the application scene after the mango... Didn't they released the so called APIs? So where are the new applications which were not possible to make before? Since mango all we saw were updates for 'fast app switching' which btw is not fst at all... And than we saw saw a dozen applications to pin a settings tile on front page... And than it just died. No new apps, no new games, everything in MP just died and came to a stall.
So much so far for the hyped API release..

Agreed. Not sure what more MS could do to entice developers. They will even write your code for you ffs. We need developers to show some initiative, or will we have to wait for Windows 8 & WP8 integration to get it?

How much faster could the app switching be lol
I say give it some time. I am expecting we'll soon see apps like the announced Skype, Tango, Spotify apps etc. Mango hasn't even reached 100% roll out yet. Perhaps too they're waiting till the Gen 2 phones launch in the US.
Just within the last few days apps like LastFM, iHeartRadio, Tunein Radioa and Vevo got background audio streaming, pinnable stations and yes fast app switching So I think the pace is fine in terms of current apps getting updated. New apps will come soon.
This is going off-topic now, but I can probably guess at why developers have been slow with updating their apps for Mango.
When Microsoft released the Mango tools, they told us (the developers) that once we updated our apps to Mango, then we wouldn't be able to update our NoDo apps. They changed that, but quite close to Mango release so there wasn't all that much time to get on and update.
It also takes time for developers to actually implement the new features and APIs into their programs.
Does the built-in live messenger functionalityi n the WP7 messaging app support "see when they are typing" yet? You know, the "..." visual that tells you the other person is typing a message? That's kind of the whole point of messaging over data rather than texting (like BBM and iMessage).

This is why the heck...firstly, I'm using my outlook account which tied to Australia region for my main account. While,my main account which is the one with all my messenger buddy is tied to my US. Therefore, I can't use the outlook account for messenger. And I even tried the following steps:
1)my main account is created few years ago, and it is tied to US. However, until now I still unable to change the live ID or merge with my current Australia account.
2)M$ don't support messenger for secondary windows live account.
3)tried to move all my active messenger buddy to outlook account,but M$ don't allow me to use live messenger on this outlook account. It keep showing error and need me the fix the password.
4)not willing to create a new live messenger account as I have spent around 30dollars on apps.

For most people the point of instant messaging is simply that it doesn't use text/ sms messages, it uses your data plan.

dedicated agenda and appointment app. Pocket Informant.
a wallet app. code wallet pro.
last decent game which i didnt finish in a day was released on 5/18/11: plant vs zombies.
audio recorder to record incoming and outgoing calls automatically. resco audio recorder.
data monitor which records all ur wifi and data connection and gives a monthly/weekly/daily/yearly view. spb data monitor.
an app to collect total call duration peak/offpeak/weekends to warn when reaching calling plan limit. phone dashboard.

apps after mango, apps after mango, microsoft will release APIs after mngo.. everyone had hopes on mango.. and now i dont know what APIs did they release.. because everytime i ask for any app i know the other person will come up with the same old 'oh thats not possible because MS didnt release that API..' bullshi*.
according to you the only apps developer can make with present API is to pin a tile and another RSS reader, combine it with flaslite and tip calculator and we have your 33K app you mentioned.

If you already have a windows phone, your OneNote files sync to Skydrive so you can view and edit them online via http://office.live.com. If you have Office 2010 desktop software, OneNote also syncs there.
I use it extensively to manage my college life.
Not bad. But I consider that with my web-based notebooks I can sync to all of my phones, even iOS. I use Evernote and it does the same thing as well as providing access on my other phones.

Onenote on the desktop comes with certain packages of Office 2010 (or 2007) but not with the Mac version.
BUt you don't have to download it.. just use the Office Web Apps from your Windows Live account.

Man, I was hoping it was going to be cool... without the usual vender tie downs and non-cross platform mess.
Guess evernote will still be the goto recommend for folks interested in this kinda tech with no restrictions and expensive software tie ins.

What do you mean? If you have a hotmail/live account, you have Office Web apps.. you don't need to download/buy anything at all. It's like google documents but infinitely more useful and functional.
I don't see how evernote is better in anyway.. (except that it is available on android ..not sure onenote is yet..)
(as you can tell, I'm a huge fan of onenote.. the main reason I will be sticking to WP for a while)

You don't need the full desktop client to use it. The web interface is very powerful.

Enjoy, mate. I use Evernote, which gives me access on all of my phones, not just my WP7. And Evernote updates faster.
Evernote syncs, but the app sucks compared to onenote.

While Evernote isn't the best web-based notebook, it's at least easier to figure out than One Note. It took me a bit to know how to make a new note and all of the things relating to it. And One Note isn't as intuitive as the web-based variety. Catch Notes is the best web-based notebook. But there isn't a WP7 version yet, so I went with Evernote until Catch Note makes a WP7 version.
To be honest, I don't like it how OneNote HAS to sync to the cloud (unless I'm doing something wrong). Sometimes I seriously have no reception - what then? For this reason, I actually use Word for note-taking.
Evernote is better.foe organizing.notes anyways. OneNote had this forever in the iOS version..

I will give you the ONE very good reason why I use OneNote and not Evernote.
Because OneNote is built in- it's made by the same people who make the OS, meaning I'm guaranteed compatibility whatever Windows device I have, and there is much more chance of the online services being reliable going forward.
I HATE third party software on mobile devices. It is the absolute bain of my life, it's very rarely done well and 90% of it is utter crap. This is why I chose Windows Phone.
I can see why you might want something that syncs to 5 different OS's, but in reality 99% of the population are very unlikely to need, care about, or have, three mobile devices, so for them OneNote is an excellent option (and the desktop software is immensely powerful, too)
That's fine many people prefer that convenience. However I'd you need superior note taking and organization tagging etc Evernote is far ahead of one note. One note still isn't really optimized for mobile yet, but it will get there.

You don't have to sync to the cloud. You can as well store your notes on the device. Just open the office app and swipe to the right. You can choose Skydrive, Phone, Sharepoint..

I really Like Polaris. It's smooth. I have OSP, and it also seems very smooth and finished. Open Office, I have it, but I haven't messed with it much. I had no problems for the short time I spent with it.

All the faux-Office apps have limitations.
Some they share...
If you're adding or changing formatting to an existing document or adding content to a document originated on a PC the formatting can change and you can't see it until you open the document in the corresponding "real" MS Office app. So what looks fine in the Android app can look different when a recipient on a PC views it. Documents created and modified exclusively within the Android app tend to fair better formatting wise.
Spell checking sucks in Android. Some of the apps below offer spell checking and some don't. Keep in mind if you're using a BT keyboard word suggestion is disabled so there's no "real time" spelling support. That doesn't just apply to faux-Office apps it applies to pretty much all of them.
Only Polaris and OfficeSuite Pro natively support multiview which is something to consider if you do a lot of content sharing between apps when creating documents and projects.
Before commenting on the faux-Office apps here's an app I use when I want spell checking and either am using the BT keyboard or when the app I'm using doesn't offer it natively. It's called Spell Checker Pro. It's essentially an HTML text editor that allows you to create lightly formatted text, spell check it, and then send it to apps (MMS, e-mail, S Note) and copy<>paste it in to all others. The fact you need to create content in one place to ensure it's spelled correctly and then figure out how to get it to another place for actual use speaks volumes of Android's limitations as a productivity platform.

Quickoffice
Bought by Google in November, 2012. It's a nice clean app and offers spell checking. Formatting's fairly easy to apply but it's not as thorough (as many options) as some of the other apps. It's free which is a plus and Google's been working on improving it since they bought it. The major downside is cloud integration - it only works with Google Drive.
OfficeSuite Pro 7
I like this one but it's a PIA in a couple of ways. First, it uses its own clipboard so you can't copy<>paste with the Samsung clipboard which means you have to copy<>paste directly from app-to-app. If you have a lot of stuff you've got in Scrapbook or accumulated in the Samsung clipboard that you want to use in a document you're creating you're kind of screwed. It offers an optional spell checker and an add-on dictionary that vary in price. Their speller's pretty meh and sometimes makes bizarre suggestions. The dictionary integration's nice when you're looking for definitions, antonyms, and synonyms. They're kind of kluged in their implementation though. A misspelled word in a document shows up with a red underline. Rather than allowing you to spell check it, it allows you to look it up in the dictionary and then manually make the correction. If you want to spell check that's launched via an icon in a formatting bar at the bottom of the app. You can get it anywhere from "free" (Amazon App Store) to $14.99. The add-ons are $4.99. It's a very effective app with great formatting and editing options but it's not without its idiosyncrasies.

This is a pretty decent and thorough app. It offers no spelling support other than what's provided by predictive text and autocorrect on the keyboard - which are both disabled if you're using a BT keyboard. So its got great formatting support but the lack of spell check is a real issue.

Polaris is a decent app. It offers no spelling support and the formatting, while decent, is fussy to use with lots of cascading menus and spinning wheels to select what you want. It has great S Pen support because of its integration by Samsung.

It works well with a BT keyboard and mouse and, because it is "real" office, allows you the comfort and flexibility to do anything you'd normally do on a PC. The downside is the PC you're connecting to has to be on all the time and if you're traveling and there's a power failure or the PC unexpectedly shuts down your pretty much screwed. You also have to be on a Pro or higher version of Windows to use RDP. You also obviously need to connected to the Internet. I have a 3G N10.1-14 with unlimited data so that's not an issue for me. At times I'll work up a document using one of the local faux-Office apps I have installed and then open it via RDP just to do the final editing and formatting.

The bottom line is we all use productivity apps in different ways and to do different things. There's no cut-and-tried universal "winner."
afaik, annotations on ppts cannot be saved on polaris. It lets you write them but they disappear.
Office suite seems to be the smoothest, but i only have the free version (read only).
Don't forget to try Kingsoft Office and Andropen Office too, they're my favourites.
Polaris is unflexible. I got Office HD in i think a Playstore anniversary sale over a year ago for 25 cents and stuck with it. To display pdf i prefer Moon+ Reader with pdf plugin.
Quickoffice was the best solution for Symbian, ported to Android and the company finally bought by Google.

I tried this and it looks pretty good. The problem I'm having is it connects fine, but only when my tablet and computer are on the same network. Did you have to configure your firewall, and set your router for port forwarding? Do you also need to set up a static IP for this to work?

Full compatibility with the real Office is near impossible. Surely even for the official Office365 apps, which require a subscription.
I have an old doc file with complex layout, and tried it on many office programs and apps over the years. While it always looks the same in MS Word, no matter which version, it looks different in other programs/apps. In OpenOffice the layout got better and closer to the real thing over the years, and in Office Suite pro it doesn't look bad, too.
