Rom Manager doesn't seem to know that I've got CWM installed. When I rooted and installed CWM I didn't do it through Rom Manager originally. Now CWM won't let me use it to manage my backups and keeps asking me if I want to install CWM? I've got Google Wallet installed so I'm a little nervous flashing things needlessly.
Any suggestions?

do you try "wipe cache" and "advanced->wipe dalvik cache?"
Thanks, I just tried, it took quite a while to clear the cache. When I booted up it went through a whole Optimizing Apps process, I'm not sure if that was due to wiping the dalvik cache? But it still didn't fix the Rom Manager issue.
Its probably not yet compatible if you have the touch version of cwm installed, so it wants to flash the standard one. Or you could always just let rom manager just reflash cwm overtop and then you may be good to go.

Maybe it can't detect it? I know we had to set which CWM version we had installed on the SGS.
Maybe try to run the install?

I don't have the touch version installed (doesn't seem to be the touch version anyway). I should have said this in the first post but it CWM v5.5.0.4.

Flashing CWM over CWM shouldn't wipe my phone right? It's only the stock bootloader that requires a full wipe?
I installed ROM manager and then CWM via ROM manager last night and its CWM v5.5.0.2 which ROM manager thinks is the latest: perhaps it can't deal with 5.5.0.4 yet...

I have the exact same issue as this Rom Manager refuses to see I have CWM installed so just keeps telling me I need to install it it also can't download and flash its own version and just freezes after download
So any updates on this or more users experiencing it ?
I think I've found the solution. In ROM Manager tap the menu button at the top and then tap Manual Flash Override. Next it'll ask you if you've flashed CWM manually so tap OK because that's what we've done. Next pick which GN you have and then choose CWM 3.x+. There you have it, it should work now.

Seriously, though, it's a TERRIBLE piece of software
I'm fairly new to using it but it seems decent, why is it so terrible? I had an eris before this and did everything manually through recovery, this seems like it's a lot better than that.
It's just more trouble than it's worth. Why not just manually flash CWM using fastboot and get your head around that as opposed to an app which can - frankly - break things?
Flashing it via fastboot is what causes the above issue. Since you flash it manually rom manager can't see it, that's why I posted the above steps to kind of "force" rom manager to see the manually installed version.
But if you're not using ROM Manager then what's the issue? Copy ROM to SD card, reboot to recovery, flash ROM...where is ROM Manager needed in that equation?
If you're not using it then there is no issue, but this thread isn't about using it or not, it's about getting it to work with the galaxy nexus when you manually flash CWM.
I like it for the backup and restore feature and being able to change the names used to backup

WHen I reboot into recovery from the rom or using the pwr+up it boots into rogue, but when I reboot into recovery from rom manager it reboots into the standard cwm. I want to only use standard cwm, How do I get rid of and install it so when I boot into recovery manually it's the regular cwm.
Most don't recommend Rom manager, I would just stick with Rogue.. I had no problems with it..

Get rid of ROM manager it doesn't flash recovery right on this phone..and koush doesn't care to fix it...don't ever use the touch one either... Get a kernel with cwm in it at use mobile Odin to install....if using a GB ROM use the el26 if using a ics ROM don't use any recovery unless u hate your phone and want to brick it

Just stick with Rogue's. ROM Manager has been the source of a TON if bricks lately (mostly to do with CWM Touch). If you absolutely can't use Rogue you can use the stock CWM from EL26.

And ROM manager doesn't actually install recovery on the phone. When you flash a recovery in it it creates a temporary recovery for you to boot into. But ya, don't even bother messing with ROM manager for all the reasons everyone else has stated.

I totally agree here with the ROM Manager danger... When I had trouble in the past on a GB ROM, Koush didn't respond to any of my help requests.
I haven't had any issues lately, but in all fairness I do like the fact that ROM Manager will automatically reboot the phone into recovery, create a backup, and then boot back into Android. Also, I can delete or rename existing backups from right within Android with RM. I have restored the backed-up images with no issues too...
I've been on ICS since Calk's 1.0 FC06 ROM, and I have been fortunate enough to know to stay away from the touch recovery
You can delete or rename backups in android from any file manager app, most custom roms have the reboot mod to get to recovery and its a few clicks to backup and reboot to phone from recovery Rom Manager doesn't do anything special you can't do with your fingers and your trusting an app to do something for you instead of doing it yourself and making sure its done right

thanks for the feedback, I won't bother with rommanager anymore than lol. Also Can I use Rogue to flash Cyanogenmod and other roms, Some people are saying to use certain clockworkmod versions and saying rogue has caused bricks.
hello, i just got my first android phone so I'm new to this sort of stuff, though I love being able to unlock hidden potential of different devices, so naturally I discovered the ability to root smart phones and all that good stuff.
The model I have is the Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660M. It's running 2.3.4. Gingerbread version.
I've been reading a lot of guides and for the most part rooting and adding additional utilities like flash, etc. seems pretty simple. However, I have not yet been able to find out how to create a back of up of my stock firmware when I bought the phone in case I end up bricking it, or decide I want to return to stock.
I've read many guides that claim to show how to create back ups and recovery points, but I'm still having trouble understanding it.
To be more specific, I would like to create as opposed to download, a back up of the phone in it's current state which is, as I said earlier, stock. I did a factory reset since I had some stuff installed while I was fiddling with it for the first time.

You have to root it before you can back up stock rom so, firstly you root it (you can find guides here on xda)
Then install clockworkmod recovery: warning: DON'T EVER USE ROM MANAGER TO INSTALL CLOCKWORKMOD ON YOUR GIO, IT WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE!! use one of the recoveries found in xda, you will also find guides to install them there.
Then third; backup in clockworkmod using "backup and restore"

so first of all, what I'm looking for is called a ROM right?
what I don't get though is how come I need to modify the device before creating the backup. Isn't the phone modified at that point? Or is the stock configuration being stored somewhere on the phone that I can't see without clockwork?
You cannot create a backup without the recovery mod CWM Clockwork Recovery Mod. But to install this you need your device rooted (modified so you can modify and view system files)

1 - you don't need to search for a rom to backup your stock rom
2 - you need to root your phone in order to be able to backup your rom
3 - you need to install a more advanced recovery (program "similar" to pc BIOS) in order to do a nandroid backup
4 - after you flash that more advanced recovery (aka CWM -> ClockWorkMod), you backup your rom in "backup and restore" menu, backup. It will then store your rom in a folder.
5 - you should strongly consider after that, to install a custom rom made by many of the devs here on XDA in order to have a better experience with your phone...

I've already uploaded a stock ROM backup last fall of the same Gingerbread ROM you're running, along with instructions on how to make one yourself or flash mine.
The best advice I can give you is: research, research, and more research.

I use px-cwm-v2.zip recovery.
You flash it using stock recovery.

Also, whats a good rom to consider upgrading to? Something that has the ability to play flash videos.

If I understand correctly, roms are basically whole operating systems that have been customized by the developer. So a rom can be already rooted and have clockwork as well as other custom stuff, and I just need to flash it. The alternative to this is to do everything manualy... root the current OS, add clockwork and whatever else. Correct?
Also, I'm not sure yet if a rooted phone has any extra options on it's own, or if it's only a set up that's sole purpose is to allow other applications to be installed who then will give the user better control over his device.

I've got Odin and the tar downloaded, but when I go into download mode with my phone and connect it to the PC, it says that the device driver was not successfuly installed, and I get no confirmation in Odin that a connection has been made between the phone and the program.
What am I missing?

Nevermind, I needed to install Kies. Don't even need to run it. Apparently it has the driver that's needed.
Okay, I've rooted my phone successfully. Now the next step is to install Clockwork and create a back up.
Now that I understand a little bit the way Odin and flashing ROM works, I think it would be better to just download a stock ROM and in case something goes wrong, I can just flash it the way I flashed the rooted one.
(I think I saw a completely stock ROM somewhere for my model but I don't remember where. A link would be appreciated if it exists.)
Correct me if I'm wrong pls.
Also, if I do that, then is there any reason to install Clockwork since I've read that many ppl have issues with installing it and it's riskier than rooting or installing other software.
Right now I think what I'm most interested in is installing Adobe Flash Player 11 or something of the sort that can play flash videos and streams.

I'm using Opera as my browser so from what I've learned, flash doesn't work with it period. Is skyfire a good alternative?
Also, like I said, I don't think I need the clockwork if I can get a clean stock ROM that I can just flash if something goes wrong. As I don't intend to download many apps or add many phone numbers (memorized instead), a backup isn't really needed.

Clockwork is not riskier than other things you do. Just follow steps and you see no problems.

its an older version, its 5.0.2.7, theres also 5.0.2.8 but these give some problems after installing/wiping, so some people still use the older version.

I'm new here. I have the same problem as anonxlg. It says can't mount system. I also used the version from the big thread for new users. Can anyone enlighten me on what to do? I've been searching the forum and google, but can't make it work. I feel like a compleet noob now, and I don't feel special about it.

Edit: I kept searching, and finally found a working 5.0.2.7 version. First I had another 5.0.2.7 version, but when I tried to install it didn't work. I finally found "signed_cwm-5.0.2.7-flashablezip-ext4+rfs.zip (Flash from Recovery)" on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421650 (through google actually. I have to get used to this site), and I'm making my backup now.

i used the cwm linked and backup worked, i tried installing cm9 beta8 (galaxyics), and it would get stuck after samsung bootscreen (it flashes a white pick or soemthing before full back screen)
i tried restoring backup i made, and it didnt work, some mount error again
i reverted back to 5.0.2.6 and did the restore backup again, and this time it goes up the the galaxy gio gt5660m screen and just stop..
note that i do not know what the rfs/ext4 is for for the gio if that is what is causing problems

My dad has rooted his Xperia S device,
He has a custom rom from work which he wants to backup before installing a new one.
When he tries to run nanandroid or Rom Manager it doesn't work.
nanandroid asks for update - it updates and it asks for an update again
Rom Manager says it does not support this device.
How can we backup the device (Simply if possible).

Backup via CWM
I suggest online nandroid backup. It is in playstore. The application allows backup without entering CWM. The back up is in clockwork folder on sdcard usually. Simplest backup. Hope it helps.
Edit: just saw you tried nandroid. Maybe you don't have root permission?

I'm assuming you meant CWM Rom manager,
I referred to it as Rom Manager in my initiall post

The script installed should be 6.14 in nandroid. As for CWM it doesn't necessarily mean the Rom manager. Look for the thread that shows how to install CWM on Xperia S. I assumed it already had it as you said it had a custom Rom installed. If it has, To enter restart phone and hold volume up when led starts.

Hi all,
First of all what a great community with so much helpful information. I am new to android, just moved from 4 years of iphone. I have rooted my galaxy s 3 using the helpful guides on this site. I was wondering if someone could point me to a helpful guide on custom roms. From my understanding, all I have to do is go to the play store and download rom manager and then install clockwork mod and from there I can start using custom roms. Thanks a ton.

You dont have CWM yet? If you want you can just download Goomanager from playstore and install TWRP from there. That will give you recovery.
Then you can start playing with your ROMS.
If you want to use Goomanager just install it
open it
once it opens hit the menu button and select Install OpenRecoverScript.

I have never used ROM manager. CWM and TWRP do the same thing. They are both recoveries that you can use to back up your ROMs and flash ROMs. I haven't used CWM in awhile as I prefer TWRP. Again they do the same thing but TWRP is a touch recovery. Little easier to use. Once you install either one you just download what ever ROM you want. I store the ROMs on my external SD card. Then you just boot into your recovery and flash the ROM you just downloaded.

I have a quick question about goo manager, I am try to point to my sdcard as the download location and it says that all the paths that I try are not valid. I have tried /storage/extsdcard/apps/goomanager but that wont work. Im not sure what the issue is.

RomManager and GooManager, and ClockWorkMod and TWRP are different kind of softwares.
CWM and TWRP are recoveries, as Jasvncnt1 said above. They are used to flash ROMs into the phone or flashable packages into a custom ROM, backup a ROM, restore a ROM, and some kind of other maintenance (fix permissions, factory reset, format SD card...). They basically are the engine used to customize your phone.
RomManager and GooManager are apps. They basically are front-ends to recoveries usable right from your ROM. (For example, if you flash a ROM from GooManager or RomManager, the app simply reboots the phone into your actual recovery and asks the recovery to proceed with flashing the specified package. Same goes for fix permissions, resets,etc. if they are available in the app.)
These apps also extend recoveries capabilities by offering some other useful functions like dowloading ROM zips from repositories, downloading Gapps packages, checking for available ROM updates...
Some people may find apps like GooManager and RomManager useful, but basically everything available in these apps can be achieved manually right from the recovery.

I believe the download path is case sensitive. extsdcard is a different location than extSdCard. Moreover, the download folder must already exist before you configure it as the prefered download folder in GooManager. So check the following:
1) that you have a /storage/extSdCard/apps/goomanager folder in your external SD card. If not, create it;
2) that you type exactly /storage/extSdCard/apps/goomanager, with the uppercase letters at the right place.
