[Q] ROM Kitchen for Galaxy Nexus - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Does anyone have any information on whether a kitchen is available that will work with the Galaxy Nexus? I've tried the DSIXDA ROM Kitchen but haven't been able to get it to work properly. Would love to have something to make customizing ROMs a little easier.
Thanks!

It's been a while since anyone responded to this, but I would like to bump this page and ask if there is a kitchen app out there to help with customizing ROMs on the Galaxy Nexus.
Thank you in advance.

dsixda's kitchen works fine. The only thing that it has trouble with is deodexing things. I've had to deodex the files just using smali/baksmali myself.

Why not just build the ROM from source to your liking? Isn't that the purpose of AOSP?

i tried using the cmcompliler for linux but it is too difficult for my skill level. I know a lot about android/roms/kernels/etc but not enough about coding to build a rom from scratch. Or is it easier than I think? I would rather use windows if there is an easy way to compile or build a rom on windows.

Unfortunately not possible on Windows. Android can only be built from source on Linux.

It's easier than you think. It's a great project for learning a bit more about Android and learning a bit about Linux if you aren't familiar with it.

You could build it on Windows if you wanted to, but it would be more of a hassle than it would be worth. It's faster and easier to just install Virtualbox or similar and setup a VM to compile Android on. It may not be quite as fast as doing it via a native OS install, but it gets pretty close.

[Project] Ubuntu Nexus [CDMA]

So I have decided to take on putting ubuntu on the galaxy nexus. I am using a reconstructed img based on the HD2's build. To Start i will be using the same methond to boot ubuntu nativly on the nexus s. So this thread is to keep people updated on whats going on. just so everyone knows since i am busy with other projects there will be no eta. Once finished i will start a dev thread under the Galaxy nexus CDMA Development section.
UBUNTU NEXUS
UPDATE Progress
Working on kernal and recompiling a boot.img
Also If anyone is willing to help please let me know Shoot me a PM. If your interested in testing the builds also PM me,

Good luck with this. I will be following even though I dont have any interest in having Ubuntu on my phone unless maybe in a dual boot function.
Well eventually thats what im shooting for.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889433 <-- this is the thread for the hd2
but eventually once a stable build is created i want to have dual boot feature so.
Hoping the best for this with dual boot, thanks in advance for your efforts

This will be fully native right? As opposed to ones that use a vnc server/client?
Yes this will be fully native and evenually dual boot. Once a stable build is ready for release

Erm... "kernel"
why just because you can? i will follow this for knowledge but don't see the point ... isnt ubuntu making a moblie version of the os themselves with a possible hardware phone too? i dont think it really has a place ... never the less i wish you good luck
ubuntu would be best for tablets not phone imo
I'm not putting a desktop version of Ubuntu on the phones. And yes but its based on android GUI and android code. I am doing this because it becomes an option..... something different . And I had an hd2 the idea itself and the actual build was pretty interesting. But think about a mobile true Linux device. All the possabilities

Also I want to make point of this Ubuntu mobile OS will be similar to android with an effing unity interface. Personally I hate the unity interface. By porting Linux Ubuntu this opens the doors for things like idk for ex programming custom gui's. Ha aha if somebody wishes a true mobile hacking unit lol not that I support this fashion of hacking. But again its DIFFERENT. But all in due tine need to get through my exams

If I can propose something, please have the RTL8187 module already built in with USB host active!
Can't wait to see development!!!!
If you need beta testers let me know! I'm more than happy to help with this project.
Awesome idea USB functionality I already incorporated and I will let everyone know on a beta

Also, provide kernel source and headers so if anyone who wants to build new modules/drivers it will be easier!
I would look at Backtrack-ARM too. I am running it in chroot but having native would be awesome! If we can find elite engineers to convert our broadcom wifi and make it monitor/injection working would be like the n900 but with way more power and bigger/better screen for mobile pentesting!

That's a good idea I will man

What are the benefits? Compiling from source vs. Cooking?

Hey!
I want to start getting into developing roms, but I am wondering (this may sound very n00bish but...)
What are the benefits of compiling android from source vs. going and getting a factory rom and baking my modifications into it?
Thanks for any help!

I guess you could do more by compiling from source,
Cooking is done when there's no source available; why would you cook when you can bake and lunch?
This is why people get an aosp supported device.

So are you saying it is better to compile from source?
If so, why?
Do you really want to learn smali hacking? Modding from source is WAAAY easier that modding through smali hacking, just ask most of the devs out there.

Because you get a more stable rom, done right.
Whats better?
Buying a tuned car that has been setup correctly from the factory, or taking your car to a local half-bit tuner and have them slap on bolt-ons and call it good?
Modifying and building from source is much easier, faster, and better to learn and do. Plus since this is a nexus, full AOSP source is available for the device. Smali modding is for proprietary ROMs like HTC Sense or Samsung Touchwiz.
Compile from source is clearly the best way, you can add features as if it came from the factory. Not using source is dirty hacking and not clean like a compiled ROM.

Rom Development?

I have access to Windows but had a desktop given to me which I now have solely running Linux OpenSUSE 12.2. I want to start looking into Roms and learning how to customize what is available on the forums. Does anyone know of Dsixda's Kitchen is being used anymore and of its even compatible with our device?
Mostly interested in learning how to modify apk's and be able to pick apart Custom Roms to be able to learn as well as customize them to my liking.
It would be best to be able to do all of this on Linux
Thanks:thumbup:
Yes. Dsixda kitchen for the Galaxy S2 works for the Epic 4G Touch.

I've been playing with it in my spare time; got a build compiled but it doesn't get past the initial Galaxy S4 splash screen. Can't seem to be able to adb into it to pull a logcat. With my limited knowledge, I'm thinking it has something to do with the fact that Ubuntu's CM sources are building JB 4.2.1 and the kernel is 4.2.2. I don't know enough about what changes were made to CM's source to play nicely with Ubuntu Touch, so until I figure that out (or someone else beats me to it) it will still be a little while. Also, if anyone would like to help, preferably more experienced than myself, I'm always open to suggestions!

Because it is not ready for everyday use and I believe the only phone that was announced to run it was the Galaxy Nexus.

[Q] other operation system on arc s

I'm new member in this site and i want to know if possible to port other OS to work perfectly on xperia arc s
got bored from android and battary drain :crying:
In theory, it's possible but not feasible. You can run IOS on an Android phone but it won't work perfectly. Likewise if you tried to run Android on an IPhone, it's possible but not perfect. Rather than asking for a port of another OS, find ways to personalize your Android experience and solve the battery drain. If you are still bored or can't be bothered, I suggest you buy an IPhone.

That's not true, as long as the OS is based on a linux kernel and has the ability to build from source with drivers it should'nt be much of a issue.

Try the custom roms available in the development section, some like Super Jelly Bean are extremely battery friendly

I proposed a solution for his battery issues. As for the rest, we must have someone with good programming skills wanting to port the os. It is possible.

Yes, I said it was possible, but not everything is served to you on a silver platter. You can build from source, but drivers are
still a big problem that stops the ported OS from working perfectly.

Easier said than done, porting an OS requires more than just programming skill.
