where has fastboot gone? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

hi guys!
I'm completely new to the forum but I didn't find the introduction section like in other forums, so sorry if I first didn't present myself there!
I just got a galaxy nexus and I'm using a mac.
I was able to unlock it and now I would like to root it in order to install the Android Revolution HD ROM and all over the web the developer team says to root the phone using fastboot. The problem is that all the links redirect to the modaco page with the first actual link and this takes you to a filesonic page which is down for the moment...
I guess this is caused by the recent sopa and pipa...
What am I supposed to do? is there any other way to download it?
every rooting guide I found talks of using fastboot...
thanks!

Do you have the android sdk installed?

Pretty sure those links have been down for a while.. check the dev section for other ways to root.

But since the developers say that you ned a gnex rooted with fast boot I thought I had to use that method in order to use their rom. So I can use any Method I want to root it?

If you've unlocked the bootloader then you have already used fastboot so just use the fastboot commands to flash CWM and then use that to flash the root package. Get the latest Superuser package from here:

Fastboot is not a program you should download. It is the menu that appears wat your GN when you start up your phone with Volume up + Volume Down + Power button. You should however download the appropriate files for unlocking and rooting etc. See other threads on what those files are...

If you installed the android sdk then it should be in the platform tools folder.

Superboot - Rooting Galaxy Nexus

Found this over on MoDaCo forums -- they have obtained temporary root on the Galaxy Nexus: 03 Nov r1: Superboot - rooting the Galaxy Nexus - Android @ MoDaCo
Superboot is a boot.img that when booted, will root your device the first time you boot (installing su and the superuser APK). No need to flash any partitions, no need to mess around with ADB, no messing with the contents of your data partition, no overwriting the shipped ROM on your device, just boot the boot image using the instructions below and you're done!

I guess you are right -- probably should have put it in General Discussion and let author of this make his own thread for support.
I'll let the mods decide what they want to do with this.

The OP did link to the site instead of posting the download. I use XDA primarily and would have never found that link had someone not posted it. I don't see why the dev would be disgruntled.

I don't see why this is a big deal, nexus devices have the ability to have the bootloader unlocked out of the box.
Simply 'oem unlock' download su and busybox from the market, job done.

I've never had a Nexus device before -- didn't know it was that easy.
You can download SU and busybox right from the market, install them and you have root access after a 'fastboot oem unlock'?

I may be wrong but while it is easy(Being that google considers these devices as developer platforms), it's not that easy.
Even with the bootloader unlocked, you won't be able to write to the relevant directories (as those require root permissions), and as such you still need root unlocked before you can install those from the market.

Right its almost that simple though. The typical procedure is:
Fastboot OEM unlock
Fastboot flash recovery clockwork.img
Boot into recovery, flash superuser zip

Ah, think you may have a point there so actually what POB has done is enable root without CWMR [as you would need to flash the super user binary from recovery] which is quite handy thinking about it because it may be a while before someone manages to compile a compatible recovery
So I stand corrected, it is quite a big deal

Yup. And the new SuperUser has the option to fully download and install the SU binary. So temp-root means super fast real root.
Why is flashing a boot image preferable to flashing a recovery image?

I don't think it's flashing a boot image, I think it's just booting off that image which then modifies the system partition to include the su binary and the relevant changes. Then you restart and boot your regular boot image, but this time you've got the su binary.
Understood, thanks.

Yea, root access is only relevant when the phone is booted up. When in recovery, to write to any partition, root access is not needed and doesn't matter.

I replied to your question in modaco but I mentioned again here, do you do the bootloader unlock procedure first before you run the superboot ?
I'll make a simple tutorial later on how to unlock and root the htc one v.

If the phone is S-OFF then you don't need to unlock the bootloader. Just root it.

Right... if it is already s-off, just download the SuperSU from Play store and you are done.

S-OFF doesn't mean that the phone is rooted. He needs to do this first:
ckpv5 said:
Rooting with Superboot
1. Download r1-primo-superboot.zip to your computer and extract in any directory.
2. Download the modded boot.superboot.img
3. Replace the boot.superboot.img in the folder that you extracted just now (r1-primo-superboot).
4. Power off your phone by holding the power button down for 10 seconds
5. Power your phone on by holding power and volume down (going to Fastboot mode)
6. Highlight Fastboot With Volume+or- then press Power
7. Connect your phone to PC
8. Double click ‘install-superboot-windows.bat’
Once it complete, the phone will reboot on its own. In app drawer you will see a SuperSU icon, click on it and update SU binary then you are done with rooting your Htc One V.
You can try any app with root access to confirm it is working.

He needs to do that only to have root and full ADB root access, if he already s-off and needs only root, just download the SuperSU from Play Store but no ADB access.
But I guess his One V is S-On, that is why he failed to flash the boot.img the first time he tried.
I just s off it and root it. But it seems it doesnt have root access yet. But i already have SU app.
Everytime i go to root uninstaller app, it asks me for adb access which i dont know how.
And also, when o try to update SU binary, it always fails. Everything is ok except the busybox checking and Gaining root access

first of all u need to have s-off and root privileges on your phone. u can find multiple guide here on the forum choose one. then u instal rom manager from app store and after install u open the rom manager and choose option flash recovery and the only option should be G2. Choose it and after few seconds it's done.
or u can use 4ext touch recovery. you shold easily find guide here to do that just use search option
sry i can't get way to root my phone , any one can tell me how root step by step and easily
for future reference google works well for searching as does the xda search button
Read up!
oky thank ,,, but any one have easy way to do root tell me please
Best way? If u have rooted phone download ROM Manager and after you accsess it click install cwm...easy

Best and easy are two different things, and truthfully you should root your phone any other way. Useing rom manager is fine and dandy but you don't learn how to do anything yourself then, which means more often then not when you run into issues later on, which you almost certainly will, you won't know what to do.
Not trying to be a ****, but the directions are pretty straight forward and amount to copy and paste with only a tad of computer knowledge.
If you want "easy" just htc dev unlock your bootloader... but in the long run it will be harder for you

Are you serious? I linked you the step by step process, if its too complicated I also said to use the htc dev unlocked bootloader method (which I'm sure you can work google to find out how)
I'm sorry this seems to complicated for you but there is no safe one click method. again, not being a **** here but if you can't follow the step by step process laid out in the wiki then you shouldn't root your phone, it will be a bad idea... but if you must still and refuse to root the proper way then unlock the bootloader with htcs method, but chance are you will run into more issues.
I'm guessing you will be happier just not alowing yourself root and stick with stock though

find strawmetal pdf and follow instructions, read carefully or your phone get bricked

Hey I recently got a glxy nexus, have some questions about rooting and flashing and some problems,
1.the first thing I don't understand is why my phone doesn't update to latest android? Still on 4.2.1, its a nexus ,so I think it should get update since first boot, anybody else have this problem?
2.so the device is not updating, I plan to root and flash it, so I'm doing this, 1. Unlock bootloader via fastboot ,,2. Flash twrp via fastboot , and start flashing roms! (These steps are my mind generated) so tell me , did I miss anything? Do I need to do something else, ? Really appreciate your answers,

hey just curious , is flashing a kernel the same way as rom? i mean do we have to flash boot.img via fastboot? and what is download mode? i heard it is used to flash stock roms on samsung devices , does it do the same on a galaxy nexus ?

kernels are normally packaged into recovery flashable zips. some include all they need inside a boot.img, some don't. if all they need is boot.img, then yes, 'fastboot flash boot boot.img' would be the correct command.
download mode is indeed the interface by which normally Samsung devices interact with a computer. It's far more easier to get an updated factory image in "fastboot format" than in Odin package files, in part because, if you're running yakju or takju, Google takes care of the software, and that's why fastboot should always have higher priority than Odin.
But yes, download mode is one more option.

don't operate the device while on low battery, put it to charge, don't let it shutdown by itself;
flash stuff for your own variant (variants: maguro, toro, toroplus) i.e. try to stick with your own variant's dev subforum, although kernels should be compatible across all variants;
give priority to fastboot, it seems you're no stranger to the tool, you have way more "freedom" with the Nexus's fastboot than with HTC's (which also uses it, I believe?);
keep platform-tools (bundled with android-sdk or in a separate package) up-to-date; current version is R17
read the thread i linked you to, you'll also want to read up on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
