Anyone else think the wifi/4g toggling is stupid? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Why is it if I have 4g "on" I can turn "on" my wifi but to turn "on" 4g my wifi must be "off"? Seems pretty dumb. At my work I have great wifi on one side of the building and 4g on the other side. I have to turn them both on in a certain order though. Is there a fix for this?

im pritty sure they use the same antenna array thats why its done like that

Because wifi sucks less battery. So if you have your wifi on then more than likely you are in a wifi area so why turn 4G on and drain battery. Only way around it is having 4g on and turning wifi on after. The way I see it switching from 4G to wifi is convenient for the battery that's why it's allowed, now if it were the opposite way your just killing battery switching 4g on when you have a wifi connection. You can still see 4g scan for service even when connected to wifi periodically when you have both wifi n 4g radio on (it scans and the min it connects wifi knocks off the connection). This also happens on my Evo 3D. So I guess it's to prevent battery drain..

Personally I like it. Where I work, there is no signal at my desk, so I am on WiFi. When I go outside to talk on the phone or take a break, I like only having to disable WiFi to get the 4G to turn on for faster browsing.
That coupled with the issue of the 4G not rescanning after a while, you may have to cycle your 4G anyways.

Slow WiFi connection

I have noticed that my G2's WiFi connection runs VERY slow. I get speeds of 2mb/s while on a computer I get 25+mb/s. I get the same ping on both devices. Is this a hardware or software limitation that can be solved by a kernel fix?

There is a thread about the G2/DZ having WiFi antenna issues. This happens when you use the phone in landscape mode. Signal bars drop significantly. In my case, I got totally disconnected (but I had poor WiFi signal strength that time). However, when I remove my hand from the top part of the device, signal strength and speed return. This could probably be your issue, since I really get good speed from my DZ. I could even stream movies over WiFi.
Do you have wifi calling enabled? Try disabling it and restarting. You'll likely see regular speeds again. Works for me every time.

Nope, I will be looking at the bcm4329 source when I get my computer running to see if I can boost the speed a little.
This may also be a router combatibility problem. So we can narrow it down can people post this:
Router brand/model
Wireless B/G/N
Wpa wep or no security
Hidden access point (yes/no)
And if you are having problems

Hidden access point (yes/no): no
And if you are having problems: Only when wifi calling is enabled. Must disable that and restart in order to get expected speeds. For example, it drops from standard 12mbit to like 1mbit.

I have the same problem with my G2.
Wi-Fi is on all the time when I'm at home, as is Wi-Fi calling because the signal is very weak here. When I first connect to Wi-Fi it's very fast. Normally I get approximately 17mbps down, 3.5mbps up. However, it seems like the connection "goes stale" after a while and I end up only getting about 2-3mbps both up and down.
It's not consistent though. Sometimes it gets slow right away, other times it will take a couple hours. But it always drops to the 2-3mbps range consistently. Plus I always have issues with the connection after it drops in speed: No connection errors, sometimes unresponsive, etc.
To fix it I simply turn Wi-Fi off and back on, but that gets to be a hassle because I have to do it every time I want to use my phone.
It has nothing to do with holding the phone in vertical or horizontal orientation, or signal strength, because even when I'm using the phone right next to the router it still happens. I never had this issue with my Cliq, but it didn't have Wi-Fi calling, which I'm thinking is the cause. Though I haven't tested it to see if it still happens with Wi-Fi calling off.
It happens with any ROM, though currently running CM7 Nightly 27.
Anyone have an explanation, or a solution?
Update: After testing it seems to only happen when wifi calling is enabled. Although I have to turn wifi off and back on to fix it. Simply turning off wifi calling doesn't fix it.

No 3G signal after getting off Wifi

Just curious if this happened to anyone or is it just me: most of the time I'm connected to wifi to save battery (home, school, etc) and when I'm out of range it should automatically connect me to the 3g network but it's not. I check settings and 3g is still enabled. Anyone know why?

I am also experiencing this. This happens to me when I am connected to WiFi with bad or no signal but then when I turn off WiFi and go to a good signal area it still registers no signal until I restart my phone then all is fine. Definitely a major bug.
ive had 2 of these phones, ive never had an issue with this. eh. maybe im lucky
Any solution to this?
Ever since I purchased this phone, I hardly get 3g signal. Will a hard reset fix this problem? I have to go by 4g or wi-fi on this phone for data.

having wifi on will actually kill your battery more because you have another radio running, thats why they give you the option to turn it off. (to save battery)
hmm thats odd though mine turns back on just fine
try a hard reset.
its deff a software issue

Wrong, having wifi on saves power because than your phone doesn't have to ping and search for cell towers

+1. Wifi Is definitelya battery saver. I leave wifi on all night at home. I get great battery life. I also never have the problem with 3g either. It always comes back even if I lose wifi signal.
The Evo3D Killer!!!
I noticed this in mine, so I went to Settings->Wireless and Network-> Mobile Network Data and then unchecked 3G and re-checked it and it hasn't had the problem since. Try it and report back.
a lot of users are having this issue along with low speed results on 3g, I read on another forum that Samsung/Sprint are working on it but I'd take that with a grain of salt. I fixed the radio wake up issue on my phone by doing factory reset and then going through the hands free activation again. Haven't had it since.
i'm having this issue too. Turning off wifi, or every time I go in an elevator and loose my 3g signal.
The strange thing though is I had this same problem with my OG Epic for the last two weeks I had it. I flashed back to the current Sprint rom and still had the problem. It was actually the reason I bought the Epic Touch on day 1.
I too am having 3G connection problems
My work is located a mile North of the 101 and Scottsdale and I can't get signal in my building, even if I walk to the big windows.
Of course Phoenix has no 4g so Im S.O.L.

Data Icons... Or lack of?

OK does this phone actually show anything other than 4g?
I am in a 3g area and I have not ever seen anything but the 4g icon.. Unless I put it in gsm only mode. But on auto or Wcdma mode it stays on the 4g icon.
Also it seems like I have issues with the Internet staying connected even when I have signal.
Also it seems like when I leave my screen off and turn it on the signal is higher than normal but goes down within a few seconds.
Anyone else notice this?

I am having the EXACT same issues. But, I am in a 4G area. Of course I got throttled by blowing through my 5G limit in a week--damn these new toys and massively restrictive internet access at work (financial industry). So now I am on edge for a while; but with the 4G icon up, I cannot hold a data connection at all. It goes on for a few seconds or such, then nothing. The upload icon is always on, but no download. I have to force GSM mode to maintain any sort of connection. The "Auto GSM/Wcdma" does not switch modes efficiently. I think it is continually checking for a 4G connection, thus resetting the 3G/Edge connection it is making. Very frustrating. . . I am hoping someone with make a Auto/4G/3G/Edge toggle so I can drop it on the homescreen rather than digging down for it.
Same thing here. Always on 4g and my wifi is spotty like the first poster. What's the deal?

5gb in one week?? That's insane usage u might need the 10gb option..
The 3g 4g network is the same network.. some towers aren't updated and some phones don't get 4g speeds but that's why it always says 4g

[Q] WIMAX disconnects and never attempts to reconnect

I live in the suburbs of Houston where the WiMAX coverage is kind of spotty. If I leave an area of coverage for more than like say a minute, my 4G will stop attempting to scan for a new 4G signal and never attempt to reconnect even if I enter a new area with 4G coverage. I have to manually toggle the connection in the notification bar.
I've searched the forums and noticed several posts describing the same issue.
Does anyone have a solution?

Bluetooth is not turned for on my device.
Bump. Anyone else having this issue?
I'm using the phone app so I don't know the link, but there's a link in general, I think, that describes increasing 4g performance. There's two simple tweaks to do and some involved ones. I just did the two simple ones. One is to change the retry interval down to 15 seconds and the minimum signal level for 4g lock is -110db. Those two changes made a noticeable improvement on fringe areas and inside for me.

I did those tweaks, that is not the issue. I have tried all the WiMax_Scan_Retry from 1 to 300 and the WiMAX will never reconnect.
For example: I do not have 4G at school and I have 4G at home. If I drive to school, the 4G will disconnect.
Then when I drive home back into 4G coverage and go to sleep even after 10 hours, the 4G will not reconnect.
Bump!!! Also have this issue.

Try doing what most people do, when you know your leaving a 4g area turn it off. Then turn it back on when you get home. No sense in wasting battery. That and it only takes a couple seconds to turn out back on and reconnect.

I have extended battery that will literally last days even with 4G on so that is not an issue for me. Besides, this is not a viable solution if I want 4G in the car and it moves in and out of areas of spotty coverage. 3G where I live is about as fast as 1x.
Mod? Rooted? Modem?
Is your phone software on stock?
What OTA updates/mods are you running?
Kernel/Modem versions?
It would be good to know of the people seeing these problems have similar software/mods/modems.

I agree. Post your setup in detail. It will help to narrow this issue down. For example I had similar prob's on EL13 modem but with 26/29 flash all is good.
So more info plz.

I tried these:
Stock/Stock+Root/Starburst/Caulkin
EK02/EL26/EL29
Rogue1.3/1.4
This may be an example where adjusting the WiMax settings in ##data# with MSL number will help. Try lowering minimum signal picked up from -89 to -110, you can also change how long it stays connected and how fast it reconnects too...and here's where to read about it all...I did it on my OG Epic, Nexus, and this phone but slightly modified settings..it could also be a kernel thing too. Some of the Nexus ICS ones do that and wont reconnect until you go into settings and toggle

I have this same problem.. Sometimes sitting in the living room. When im outside i get 4 bars of 4g but inside i get 1. if some reason i get disconected, it seems to switch over to 3g and stay there without scanning again. If i walk outside again, still stays 3g until i toggle off and on 4g again....

Anyone know of an app that will toggle 4g for us when it loses connection?
Or maybe a tasker profile? I tried in tasker, but I can't seem to get it to do more than basic things. There a couple spots in town that always lose 4g when I drive by and never reconnects as well. 3g is slower than when I use roam control on 1x verizon.

Is it possible to switch 3g->2g if I turn on Wifi and wise versa?

I just want to save battery. Can my phone switch to 2g if I turn on Wifi?
Any mod or app?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
that question hurts my head.
wifi is wifi...it will connect to a wifi network if an open one is around. this does save battery over 3g.
however, this will have no effect on cellular data.
you may be able to go into settings>more>mobile networks>network mode and toggle through some of those options...one of them will probably witch to 2g mode.
FYI, those instructions are for the CDMA/LTE Gnexus....so your results may differ. but that is where i can toggle from LTE to 3g mode....assuming you would be able to toggle from 3g to 2g mode.
Your mobile network gets disconnected when you connect to Wi-Fi anyways. So who cares?
Thanks!

But tasker is damn expensive What about battery life? Does it consume much? I bet it does because app must monitor everything what is happening in th phone.
