Why does mobile hotspot work but others don't? - Acer Iconia Tab A100

I have a Verizon Samsung Fascinate phone and an Acer A100 tablet. My tablet locks in on the wi-fi signal generated by the the Fascinate's Mobile Hotspot program with no problem, however it does not even recognize the wi-fi signal generated by Open Garden Wi-Fi program.
Does anyone know what the Mobile Hotspot program has that Open Garden Wi-fi program does not?

If by Hotspot program you mean the carrier loaded one, then this makes sense. This tablet only supports a specific wifi range (called ad-hoc I believe? Correct me if I'm wrong here) and thats the signal type the default one gives off. But OpenGarden uses a different one (called ad-poc I think, again correct me if I'm wrong) and the tablet doesn't support it. So your solution would be:
1.to try the beta version of the normal wifi tether app (the one that opengarden is built off the sources of, you know the one.) and see if that fixes it.
2. switch to an AOSP rom, and use the built in tether from that. Its a known problem with older android devices and mobile hotspots.
The Evo Shift gives off the correct one with both AOSP and near stock roms, as its a newer device, so I'm good there, but you'll need to do one of the above fixes. Sorry about that.

Infrastructure vs. ad-hoc
Minor correction (I think). Tablets/mobile devices out of the box support infrastructure network connections. In order to tether you either need to broadcast that mode or modify the wpa_supplicant file on the device to allow it to identify and connect to ad-hoc connections.
I have never heard of ad-poc.
The beta version of wifi tether supports infrastructure on some devices, so some people are able to use it. Best bet is to, like the above poster said, is to load an AOSP rom on the phone and use the built in hotspot. There is an official port of CM7 for the fascinate and I know that has built in infrastructure hotspot.

Thanks for reply. It seems to me if the native or bloatware program that comes with the phone can generate the correct frequency to work on our tablets without the need for any rooting or supplicant files or whatever they are called then why can't a program be written for the market that generates the needed frequencies since it is obvious it is not a hardware issue.
If my opinion sounds dumb due to ignorance on my part, I apologize. However if someone that knows can tell me why it cannot be done I would be grateful.

Not sure, might be because the files neccisary aren't open source, or no one has rewritten them for the facinate. I still think your best bet is AOSP, but you can try getting the apk off the wifi tether Google project page. Could be solved by the newest beta of that, cause it might have been fixed in that new version.

Thank you for the information, WiFi Tether 3.1 beta6 is the one I used and it works perfect on my Acer A100 tablet, no rooting or messing with the tablet involved. I get lousy 3g signal inside my home and I was was still able to watch a movie on Netflix from my Fascinate tether. It also works fine on my laptop. Thank you for all the help, I'm a happy camper.

[request] WIFI Only Rom

ROM that doesn't use any resources or have any apps for phones or mobile connectivity. I need a ROM that's strictly for web browsing when connected to WIFI.
(I lost my phone and deactivated it and got a new one. I recently found the phone and since its deactivated its only useful when connected to wifi)
So I would like a rom that completly rids of th ephone features and just have a "portable internet / gaming device"
Will pay handsomely if a developer is a redditor. and makes a rom with my request, but in mind "Reddit Moblie"
Umm... just use airplane mode on any rom, even stock and there ya go.
Stock should let you activate Wifi with airplane mode activated, but some custom roms do not. There is an app in the Market that allows you to activate other radios, like wifi/cell/bluetooth, with airplane mode active. (Here)
I think tphillips was his name...he worked on something similar, but it's been long abandoned.
I keep the cell radio active for syncing the time... You can root and use an app to do NTP... but the cell radio sync is easier, especially if you cross timezones since it will resolve that automatically...
Also, leaving cell connection on allows you to use Llama location profiles as well.

IPSec VPN reboots phone when used on 3G

Hi all,
For me one of the big draws to the Galaxy Nexus (and, more specifically, Android 4) was the inclusion of "proper" Cisco IPSec support. I've been using it over wifi to great effect since I got the phone earlier this week and was really happy.
Was out and about today for the first time since I had the phone and decided to give it a try. I was disappoint to find that, although the VPN comes up ok, as soon as you try to pass data down it (e.g. Wyse Pocketcloud or even a simple website), the phone immediately reboots.
Rather annoyingly, this seems like a known issue:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=23404
Can anyone else confirm this and does anyone have any ideas for a fix or workaround?
Thanks,
Daern
Same here, IPSec with Xauth PSK.
No workaround but I was thinking to try old good get-a-robot-vpnc but didn't bother yet hoping this to be fixed. Get-a-robot-vpnc might work as tun support is compiled into ICS kernel and busybox on rooted devices provides all commands it needs to bring tun interface up and install routes.
hmm i've been using IPSec with Xauth PSK to Cisco on 3g & 4g and have not had any issues.
Bone stock/non-rooted 4.0.2 VZW.
use wyse pocketcloud, proprietary app, and http/https without issue.
I'm still on 4.0.1. What about the OP?

Colleague has 4.0.1 (the volume fixed second version). I have 4.0.2 applied directly from the Google images page. Both do the same.
Interestingly, someone on the Android issues discussion is reporting that AOSP 4.0.3 roms dont have this issue. I'll certainly test this when I have 5 mins.

Betting good money that the key fact here is the different underlying 3/4G hardware and drivers that the LTE version inevitablly has...
Update:
Have installed 4.0.3 (Open Kang Milestone 1) and can confirm that the VPN no longer reboots on 3G.
Happy days

[Q] Wifi Tether Apks NOT Working(?)!

Yes I used the Search feature, still no satisfactory resoultion...
I have rooted several phones over the past few weeks (with different bootloaders), Evo 4Gs, one tethers, one doesn't, Droid RAZRs, both tether, Droid 3s, neither tether (I read the TBH thread, so...), E4GT neither tether (mine included but am running Phantom's Rom so no worries there).
I am at my wits end. The apk(s) used to work before, but as of late I am not having any success at all. Android Tether lists in my networks, my pc and laptop will connect, internet access is detected, they connect but NONE of my browsers are able to connect.
I never had this problem, never had to change any settings in the apk(s), and never had to change my pc(s) configuration. Is this happening to anyone else? Does anyone know what is going on?
HELP ME OBI-WAN KENOBI!
Try FoxFi, free at Google Play. I had issues tethering E4GT. This app works great for Samsung & Motorola. All others, maybe Bluetooth.

Wifi Tether (Im using 3.1 beta11 pulled from Calk's ICS roms) works if you change the device profile to "Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE)". I always enable the access control and allow the pc accessing.
The hacked sprint hotspot has always worked for me on gingerbread as well i prefer it but use the other atm on ICS.
Wifi Tether wont work properly until you change it to thet CDMA/LTE Nexus it gives the same issue you describe without the change.

Ok but what are you running ICS or GB because there is an answer to both.... If you are rooted the stock wifi tether works fine so can we have a little more info although the answers you have gotten so far a pretty damn good.
Thanks
I switched to my Nexus S 4G to give the ICS ROMS a spin and really loved it but missed my E4GT so I recently switched back. I am currently on Phantom's EL26 (Gingerbread) from way back when. I found that the EL 26 modem gives me the best battery life by far and I like the debloated stock because I am running SPB SHELL 3D launcher (cracked-pm me).
I have so many Google Wifi Tether apks on my pc and dug up the wifi_tether_v3_1-pre101.apk and changed the channel to 6. It works now.
The Sprint Hotspot comes fully functional on the ROM that I am on but it was really bugging me that I couldn't get the google wifi tether to work on friends' and family's phones. There must be a bug in the newest release or something.
FIFOX said that HTC has a block on wifi tether when I tried to install it on my friend's Evo 4G.
I am going to use the TBH thread to change the radio strings on my friend's Droid 3 so he can tether. We'll see how that goes later today.
-worked like a charm; rewrote the strings with RadioCom and changed the entitleent with sqlite editor, using the most recent google wifi tether apk on chanel 6.
Thanks for all the input. I'm gonna hit the thanks button for you all.
PEACE!

[Q] unable to use wifi tether on GA10

I was under the impression that most kernels included a net filter module, however I have been unable to try and get the WiFi tether for root app to work on true ga10 release. It launches and runs, but it can't receive any connections, or lease any dhcp address it seems. I was wondering if anyone had any tricks on this, or suggestions. It would be really helpful to have. I know in one of the past leaked builds I was able to use the sprint hotspot app without paying for it, but unfortunately that seems to be fixed in this area or in the app.

Any half-good (free) Wifi Tethering apps out there?

Unfortunately this seems to be turning into a tired question that gets asked at least once a year (under different circumstances or requirements I guess), so happy 2015! The included Verizon tethering app seems OK, but I miss some of the tethering apps I used to use back in Gingerbread that would do things like restrict clients and show current upload/download speeds in-app.
At any rate, I currently have the tethering option from Verizon, and I'm rooted, so hopefully I'm pretty compatible with most of the apps out there. My issue with what I've found so far though is that there's a category of root apps that bill themselves as very hacky workarounds, and most of which haven't been updated in years which makes me a little hesitant to install on my device. Then there's another category of apps, both free and paid it seems, updated somewhat recently, but having even less features than the Verizon app, and/or most user reviews state to the effect that they do not work or are in general awful.
To help shorten the list, I've tried FoxFi, which was not so good imo, and I guess that would eliminate PDANet as well since I believe that requires a USB connection. Also, I'm looking to move away from the native Verizon tethering app.
So I guess this is a sort of "what are you using" topic, and are you happy with it?
Thanks for your input!
Just giving this a bump to see what you guys think.
At least for AT&T's tethering restrictions, flashing any custom ROM (that corresponds with your firmware) will do the trick. Or even any stock ROM that isn't carrier branded to Verizon or AT&T (most other carriers and regions have no such tethering restrictions).
I wasn't that impressed by FoxFi or PDANet either back in Gingerbread days. They seem needlessly complicated, compared to just going to the built-in HTC WiFi tethering setting and turning it on.

Yeah, maybe there's some sort of "just right" when it comes to complication that isn't out there right now. I gave in and downloaded a few root-requiring apps so I'll be giving them a run later today.
Well, I gave both Barnacle and the Wifi Tether app a try - sadly, it seemed that neither could properly control the wifi radio to get it broadcasting. Also, it seemed that both would cause the system Wifi Radio controller to glitch in that I could not toggle wifi anymore after using those apps unless I rebooted my phone. 0 for 2!
