Letters in main menu. - Windows Phone 7 General

Hello. I just discovered a strange thing and I don't know how to get rid of it. So i was adding some music and I deployed "Sound enhancer" and after that my phone grouped all my apps in menu like it is done in people tab. So i have a huge letter above all my apps which makes my menu longer and it takes more time to find an app. It also doesn't look eyecandy. So i want you to ask how to get rid of those letters and bring my menu back to normal state.
Regards
okey~

It's not a bug, it's a feature. After a cetain amount of apps this is added to your menu. When you touch on one of the letters in the menu it will bring up a screen of letters. Touch on one of these and it will take you to those apps starting with the corresponding letter. This was added to reduce scrolling when you have a large amount of apps. If you do not like it I believe that uninstalling enough apps to bring you below the limit will disable the feature.

I know how it works. But is there no way to bring it back without uninstalling apps?

Not sure it goes away even if you uninstall apps.

Nope.
Surely it makes scrolling faster, not longer? For example, rather than scrolling all the way down to, say, 'Skype'...two taps and you are there in the 'S' section..
Either way, it cannot be disabled (except perhaps if you are fully unlocked, and edit the registry?)

You are right, and think only a fool might want to disable it! I purposefully installed 4 apps more that I won't ever use just to get those indexed letters on!

Use voice instead, it is the fastest. Hold windows key and say start "app name"

It gets better - say find "whatever address"
It will give you directions also (right above the web search)
or find "Store name" it will show that store closes to you.
and try find "movie name"
It will show theaters near you playing the movie
and find "weather in san fransisco" for example will show 5 day forcast via bing in websearch
Then find an iphone user that has siri and show him opening apps. Siri doesn't do that yet i use find flashlight all the time to use htc flashlight. it auto comes on when the app opens and it great for opening car or house door in the dark
enjoy!

[Q] New to Android and G2, have some questions...

Hey guys, new to Android and G2, my G2 just arrived today and I'm in the swing of things. Been doing some app picking up on the Market and it's really just awesome.
A few questions though.
What's with Browser? It lets me select a homepage but when it opens, the Homepage doesn't load. Instead it's the last page I visited. Not a fan of that.
What's the best Video Player out there? I'm using RockPlayer, it's great, but I'd like to lose the ads. If there's no alternative, I wouldn't mind paying the ten bucks, but... if I can avoid this, I'd rather do that.
Also, the Music Player is okay, but I can't seem to get the music to stop. I can pause it, but it doesn't just close out completely.
Thanks for your help, sorry about the noobish questions, but please go easy on me, I'm new -.-
The browser goes to the last page visited because you haven't closed out of the browser completely. You might have just pressed home to get out of the browser, unless you pressed back several times to go to the original page from all the pages that you have viewed, then it will finally go back to the home screens. It will go to the new home page if you press menu, windows, and new window.
I don't have a problem with the stock video player, so I have been using that.
Also, I'm not sure since I don't have a stock rom, but on CM6, if you hold the back button, it forces the apps to close out. You could give that a shot.
The question 1 & 3 are the same actually. The browser and the player still runs in the background, like u just minimize them. They are not closed yet.
To close them the simplest way is to install a thread killer software like ES series or some others.
Q2, I found no better video player [email protected]@
I'm sorry, stock video player? Where's that at? :/
And thanks for the answers on 1 and 3, I'll give both a shot now.

You know, if you have a video file in your memory card and you click on it using a file browser or if its in a directory where the gallery app picks it up (folder named 'videos' etc), it plays automatically.

I'd recommend u root the phone and install "Ad Free", it solves the annoying ads on your phone
There are a ton of video players in the market. I've tried the ones that seem to be most commonly used by XDA folks: ArcMedia, Rockplayer and vplayer. Rockplayer is my favorite so far. It is able to play every video I've tried (might have to toggle hardware decoding to play a few) and has the most usable interface of those I've tried.

Is that a function somewhere? Or is that just on the Home Screen and applies to all Apps?
I'm not really trying to stop anything from running, as opposed to having a certain webpage open everytime I open the Browser and no music playing when I open up Music. For those two Apps, I don't want to be where I "left off."
Also, I did root it and put on CM 6.1.1. For the first time doing something like this, I think it went rather well.
Thanks guys, for any help provided.
Dolphin browser is the one I use and I have no complaints.

Android decides for itself whether to leave an app running when you move away from it, or whether to close it. It usually does a pretty good job.
Most people want the browser to stay at the page they were using so they can go straight back to it. There are task killer apps for Android but it's normally recommended that you stay away from these, since they can cause their own problems.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z
Right, I'm not looking to close any apps really. I guess it'd be nice to be able to close an app out, say a game, Browser or Music, but only if you wanted to. If you instead just pressed Home, those apps would stay open so you can go back to them later. But if you were finished with say, surfing the web, you could exit out, it would take you Home like normal.
I don't know, I understand totally about Android and it's ability to multi-task. I'm not really even looking to close things out completely, but if that's the distinction between opening an App from where you last had it to opening an App to it's "home screen" then so be it.
Yeah, it's kind of a different mentality. Pressing the phone's home button is really more of a "show desktop" than an exit. This means a better user experience for the average user though (since as was said before, everything is back to the way they last had it and the programs will load faster since they weren't removed from memory to begin with). Whenever I want to leave the browser on its home screen, I simply close all of its windows before leaving the app (just like opening a new window, closing the last open one will make it go to the home page).
With a custom rom, you can do more of what you are saying. I know with CM, you can assign a long press of the back button to exit out of the foreground program (so now pressing home will leave the app running and long-pressing back will completely exit out of it). I believe the MIUI rom allows that as well. Alternatively, you can use a task manager to do the same thing (though maybe not as conveniently---not sure if any of the task managers have a similar shortcut key feature).
Thanks. This is what I was looking for. I have Cyrogen 6.1.1 on my phone now. Could I ask for some assistance in setting up the long press of the back key? Thanks much!
Sure. It's under Settings->Applications->Development. The last option in the list.
Thanks again so much Quinn. I am very happy now! Just a few more questions and I think I'll be good.
1) I'd like to be able to set my Quickkeys to Back, Foward, and Home. Is there a way to do this, preferably without an App? If not, at least a way to clear out the Quickkeys area.
2) What does the Google App package come with exactly?
3) How do I uninstall some of the Apps like Twitter and Facebook? I don't see a way to uninstall those the normal way.
Thanks for all the help!

You can do this by editing your keymap files. An example of an edited one can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837002. The QuickKeys are mapped to user1, user2, and user3. I know you said you didn't want to use an app, but there is a simple one to use called ButtonRemapper (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464). You may be able to install it, use it to quickly edit your keymap file, and then uninstall, but I'm not positive on that. That app page also has a link to a great guide about how keymap files are structured.

I'm assuming you are talking about Google Addons for CM6? You can unzip the file and look in the apps directory, but here's a listing for convenience: CarHomeGoogle, CarHomeLauncher, Facebook, GenieWidget, Gmail, GoogleBackupTransport, GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter, GoogleContactsSyncAdapter, GoogleFeedback, GooglePartnerSetup, GoogleQuickSearchBox, GoogleServicesFramework, googlevoice, HtcCopyright, HtcEmailPolicy, HtcSettings, kickback, LatinImeTutorial, list.txt, Maps, MarketUpdater, MediaUploader, NetworkLocation, OneTimeInitializer, PassionQuickOffice, SetupWizard, soundback, Street, Talk, talkback, Twitter, Vending, VoiceSearch, YouTube.

You can delete the appropriate APK from your /system/app directory. Alternatively, you can simply disable the app with a "pm disable" command in the terminal (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809231). This is usually the safer route---disable the app, make sure your phone is still running properly, then uninstall it if you still want to. If you want a nicer interface for doing all this, you can download TitaniumBackup from the Market (I believe the free version allows both uninstalling and freezing/disabling apps).
Enjoy your new phone!
Dude... open market, click the search button, enter "firefox". Install that. Yes, genuine firefox. Its in beta and still has a few glitches, but ITS FIREFOX!! DO IT!

Best New Launcher to Check out!

So I have found a new launcher that has great potential. Kind of reminds me of Wisbar Desktop from my WM days as you can put items anywhere on the screen and they are not locked into a grid like every other launcher. Besides swiping your pages side to side, you can also scroll down on each page like WP7.
Has lots customizations and the developer is extremely responses. Received a email back from him within 15 minutes after contacting him. Still has some bugs and he is aware of them and is constantly working on it.
I am running my screen at 720p and I totally recommend that as you can get lots on your screen!
It is free as well!

Its smooth but I don't like how icons are not applied on a grid. Everything is free-standing and I can't get anything to align. Its really bothering me.

because its a launcher/app. If you were to set a contacts icon on the screen for direct dial or something like that, you would not be able to make a call because you didn't want that permission.
I'm pretty sure every launcher needs that permission.
I can't believe I didn't think of that. I don't add contact shortcuts, but it does make sense. I think I'll go download it now.

The developer is aware of the issues and is currently working on fixing them. I run into problems editing pages after I add a lot of items on the homepage.
Totally agree this can be the best launcher to date with as little more work.
If you haven't tried yet, drag items to the bottom of the screen as fat as can go and you will see you can then scroll the page down. There are probably so many cool things to do in the launcher. If anyone figures some tricks out, post it up!
has anyone figured out how to get a calendar widget to work?

Simple Calendar widget works fine. Just do not choose the scroll option in the widget. Any widget that scrolls will not work.
thanks man, it was the "scrolling" option that was messing me up...
EDIT:
I have to say, once a couple small things work out, like sculling widgets, this launcher is going to be super hot...
Never saw anything so customizable as this launcher is..

Another cool trick I just noticed for lining up apps and widgets on the screen...
Hold down whatever you want to move. Then let your finger off of it to bring up the little menu that says edit, etc. Then either click the back button or touch somewhere else on the screen and it will leave your item highlighted. In cse you didn't know, at this point you can re-size your widget but if you move the whole widget around you will see red lines show up when it is lined up with other items near it making it simple to know where you are placing it.
It is kind of hard to explain but try and and you will understand what I am talking about....
Its pretty cool and has A LOT of potential.
pretty cool but could've been better

New Android/S3 owner going insane over 3 issue

Greetings. After testing the water with a GNex for a week, I was so impressed with Android I locked myself with AT&T for another two years and bought an S3. It's been almost two weeks with the S3. There are issues that I'm willing to overlook for the overall package, but there are three issues that are completely driving me insane that I might return the S3 for. I tried to post this in the mega S3 annoyances thread but I couldn't.
1. The S3 is auto-adding every single misspelled words into the my word list. The only way I find to stop it is to turn off predictive text, which turns everything off including basic spell checking.
2. I copy and paste a lot in the email app. The left text selection handle is upside down, so I can't see where my text selection begins unless I place my left thumb nearly upside down on the screen. It is the same way in the browser, but it's less of an issue in the browser since it brings up the magnifying glass. In the Gmail app the text selection handles are the way they should be.
3. Getting and syncing new email in the email app is horribly slow. Typically it would sit there with the spinning circle for a minute (or longer) before new messages come in. Half the time it would look like it finished syncing but no new email is there, but I would have 3 new messages in my inbox. The other times I would read and reply and delete an email, but on my computer that email is still unread on the browser. This behavior is not consistent as there are times syncing is instant. Gmail does not have this problem. And somewhat related, sometimes the new email notification doesn't automatically clear up after I read a new email, this happens on Gmail as well.
I really love this phone, but these three issues are absolutely driving me insane and I'm ready to pack it up and return it. Please someone tell me these issues are because I don't know what I'm doing :crying:
1. Use any alternative keyboard - Swype, ICS, Swiftkey etc
2. Use alternative Email app, or forward all your email to Gmail account.
3. See 2.
Do quick reading in general - you'll find many interesting things.

When I was using stock keyboard it wouldn't add my words to the dictionary unless I swiped upward on the word that I wanted to add. If I just tapped on the word it would add it to the text but not to the dictionary. Just hitting space would use the predicted word.

Hitting space or selecting the word (misspelled or not) from the predictive text area will both add that word to the my word list. I kept wondering why some gibberish made its way into my composed messages, and one quick look in the my word list my jaw was on the floor.
Maybe I'll look at other keyboard as bravo suggested. But I'm still kind of in shock at this behavior - why would it auto add every misspelled word into the list? Why have a spell check at all
I personally uninstall Samsung keyboards from all their phones and use the aosp/aokp keyboard. Its much better IMO. As for email, I've never used a stock email app ever. I've used K9 pretty much since I got my Captivate. Backed it up with TiBu, moved it over to my S3, and everything just worked.

I just installed ICS Keyboard from the Play store. Wow it works so much better. The first thing that I noticed when I got the S3 was the lag on the keyboard compared to the GNex. With the ICS keyboard on the S3 it feels exactly like it on the GNex. All the more shocking how the Samsung keyboard can be so horrendous. However, this is a security hole as the keyboard naturally captures every single keystroke. I'm not comfortable with the idea of installing a keyboard from an unknown source.
With the stock Samsung keyboard, is it *supposed* to auto-add every misspelled word in the my word list? If it is then what is the point of having spell check

I can't stand Samsung keyboards. One of my least favorite "features" of touch wiz. Something like swift key is just so much better I can't believe people use the stock keyboard. Hell, the JB keyboard is excellent, and Samsung goes out of their way to remove it.

All keyboards capture your keystrokes. That's what they are for.
Also, just about everybody uses third party keyboards because the manufacturer keyboards suck. SwiftKey, Swype, perfect keyboard, and 8pen are some of the common ones.
On to the other issues, use a third party email app. I use K9. Just don't forget to disable sync and notifications from the stock email app.
Just about everybody uses third party email clients too.
Finally, try using different browsers and sms apps. Try dolphin or chrome for browser and handcent or go sms for texts. Good luck to you.

Hmm, every-time I would try to type "ya" it would come up with something else and if I hit space or on "ya" the next time it would do the same thing until I finally tried swiping up on the word I wanted to store and it worked.
SwiftKey is the best keyboard around you should try that.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions everyone.
My problem with the very slow Yahoo mail syncing appears to be ONLY on my main Yahoo email account. I tried another Yahoo account as well as a new outlook.com address on it and the syncing is immediate. So problem solved, I'll likely be switching over to the new Outlook.com service.
So issues 1 and 3 are solved/worked-around, that leaves #2 with the upside down text selection handle. I've attached a screen shot to show you what I mean. I tried K9 as suggested and yes the handles are as they should, not upside down like the stock email app. What is up with that Samsung :silly:
I am still dumbfounded as to how/why the default Samsung keyboard adds every misspelled word into the word list. This is with all factory default settings, no settings were messed with.
Honestly I'm a huge fan of the ICS keyboard. Here is the APK pulled directly from the GNex. Simple, functional, clean. Just move this apk to the phone and install. You will need to go into settings and check to allow installation of unknown applications since this is not coming from the market. Enjoy.

Like stated all your issues are with the software not the phone. Get a different app. This is why people stick with iPhone. It's just easier

I just tried it again, just now, just to confirm I'm not hallucinating. As soon as I press space that word is added into the my word list. I now have a bunch of dkdk dkdkdk dkdkdkdk in there after the previously emptied my word list.
On the Gnex with the stock keyboard, the only way it will add a word is to press that word in the area above the keyboard, then it will prompt touch again to save. If I don't touch it again it and just press space it doesn't add it.

Yes absolutely. The software matters as much if not more than the hardware itself. I stuck with iPhone for the past 3 years because no Android versions or devices had the smoothness in the UI that I demand. Believe me I have no love for Apple or any particular brand; I spend my money on the devices that work for me, simple as that. Now that Android has matched the smooth UI experience, I dumped the iphone real fast. The GNex running Jelly Bean feels smoother and faster than the S3, goes to show software matters more.

Am I the only one who likes S-Voice better than Google Now?

I know neither are perfect but when I give a local phone command like play music or a certain song S- Voice usually does it automatically. Google Now just always wants to search the web or make me scroll to a (tiny) button and choose what I want to do. Any tips to getting Google Now to "get a little smarter"?
I don't get Google Now yet. I mean I have it, I just don't "get it". The cards kinda put me off, so I haven't taken the time to explore what it really does for me.
I liked being able to press the search button (which my S3 doesn't have ) and Google Voice Search would pop up and I'd tell her (yeah, her) to do something and she would do it (usually).
Google Now seems a bit more complicated.
I've been using Google Now for a while now and I've found it to be very convenient. I love the fact that it will remind me when my favorite football (soccer) team plays a day before on the days I forget. It's pretty awesome IMO how it gives me an ETA for my commute to and from work without having to look up anything. It also does that for any place I look up (Store, Company, etc) with a shortcut to navigate. I was skeptical at first but it has found it's way to integrate into my everyday life.

I looked into it a little bit and I've come to the conclusion I don't lead an interesting enough life for Google Now to be useful. I (more often than not) know where stuff is around me, I have apps that tell me the weather and my teams' scores, and public transit is pretty consistent for me.
So there you go.
I can't really get the hang of either of them. Can either of them place phone calls or open apps?

There both agreviting. I mean try telling it to send a text message, damn thing just twist your words. It's making me think my spoken English was recently learnt through rosettastone. I end up arguing with it....

I use Voice Search (not Google Now) because the cards put me off.
Usually I'm looking to do something specific and I don't need a bunch of cards coming up.
I found that S-voice was less accurate and slower than Voice search for everything. VS will make calls, search, search phone, send texts...etc.
I hated on S-voice that it had to repeat back what it was doing....make sure that's what I wanted and then do it....the process took longer than VS by 3X.

Ditto here. I did find personalized recognition under settings so you can try that to see if it helps, and IIRC, you can choose the apps that it has access to.
I pretty much only use the (new offline) Google Voice search/commands, too, and ignore the Google Now cards, because they're not useful often enough in NYC. Weather and extreme weather alert cards are nice, but the subway and commute stuff doesn't really help me, and I don't give a sh1t about the new movie & sports cards.
Maybe more user-relevant cards from apps will show up in the future, though.
(Still, S-Voice sucks.)
The fact that google now doesnt have full control over the apps yet is the kicker. I think it will be able to do this and then it will be the king. But for asking google search type things its better than S voice, but S voice can control the apps....combine the abilities of the 2 with the speed of Google Now and it will be great.

Google voice is the best of both worlds...it has app control and it's fast on voice searching.
It's S-Voice without the annoying slowness and GNow without the stupid cards popping up.

Isn't part the problem that Google Now uses DIFFERENT commands to do things? (I just updated to the v7 version and I can set a time with the same prhasing as S Voice, but it actually sets an alarm for 10 minutes later vs S-Voice's bringing up the timer part of the clock.)
In S Voice you would say, "set a timer for ten minutes" and it brings up the stop watch and asks you to start it. (mine usually times out before I can say 'start')
In Google Now you say, 'set a reminder for ten minutes ' and it does set the alarm for the time.
What I LOVE is that Google Now can look at my calendar and where my next appt is and tell me (in advance) how long it's going to take to get there, reminding me to leave. This of course requires that you put the information into the location portion of your appts.
There's a set of 2 vids on Youtube with Google Now's 67 commands and search types.

Can someone explain me how Gnow works and what it can do never used it
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I never use neither of them.
I hate Google Now throwing all the sports thingy wasting my battery, memory, and data.. Though, S-voice don't spend any data, I feel like it's wasting battery and memory.
I'll use G-Now/S-Voice when phone can stay up for 3days with heavy usage

Contact specific notification tones

Am I blind, or did they actually leave out contact specific notification tones option they've always had? Took the Oreo update last night and noticed the one person I want a different tone on changed to the default tone and there's no option under edit contact page. Kinda bummed about that and definitely feel like the phone isn't as snappy as it was on 7.1.
Same thing here.. I looked around on a few sites and notice a few threads.. the idiots have seemed to removed the option. There are a few other chat programs that do it... I also am very pissed at this moved.. Reluctantly I moved to the Verizon Messenger + app. It does allow you to assign specific tones. I hated the interface but once you customize it ..it is ok... I was just so use to the stock android messenger.. and now this bulls**T. Maybe they will bring it back in the next update...

I hope so too. Is your phone noticably slower? Many of my apps take 3-4 times longer to open and a few like my adt app and Chase app take 5-10 seconds to load the login screen.
