Read the Auto Root thread, it will give you pointers to get EL29 rooted.
Basically just flash the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN One-Click in my signature to get root. If you want CWM, use the Auto Root package, Option C, to install EL29+CWM-Rogue.

well for some urge, i just want newest bootloaders, official untouched software loaded onto my phone. I'm finding these ROMs to be not as good as stock. For example dialer codes on deodexed ROMS can't do "*#0*#". I just want temp root to gett rid of bloat, apply the tethering mod, and then remove root. I just dont want my files to be pre modified or touched by someone.

There is no root exploit available in the way you want at the moment. However, I can assure you that if you flash the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN One-Click, then do whatever cleanup you want, then use Auto Root Option B to unroot, you will be at 100% stock Modem, Kernel, and ROM (except for the changes YOU made)
I'm not sure the distinction you are making is really significant, as adding 3 files to the ROM, doing your thing, then removing them isn't going to result in any "changes" in behavior, certainly not the ones you listed above.
The packages I put together are not custom ROMs. They are the minimum needed to get root. Nothing else is changed. The changes made to add root are completely reversible by running Option B in Auto Root.

How come people installing AIO over your EL29 are having issues compared to those who put AIO on Calk's pulled odex stock EL29? Those type of discrepancies get me frustrated. I'm not saying anything is wrong, but idk :/
the issues on the pre-rooted EL29 can be pointed out in the AIO thread

I think i found a way to try out tomorrow.
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper
I can use that to keep root after taking an OTA. so i can use auto root from EG30 stock and use that app to preserve root with the OTA
A review from the app:
"Kept Root After Upgrade to Sprint Epic 4G
Epic 4g is the Sprint version of the Galaxy II. I installed the app before doing an OTA upgrade today. I backed up root. I did the over the air upgrade, no more root access. I opened OTA RootKeeper, pressed the button for restore, and I have root again. AMAZING!"

I don't know what the issue is, but I run MD5 checksums against the product of the EL29 OTA updates against the pre-rooted EL29 and it is a 100% match.

HAHA exactly how I felt. Because of Sfhub's work, I was able to easily root, install CWM + EL13 and finally the Unamed ROM.
I could not in a million years imagine having to write the code or issue the commands to make all that happen.

I agree with you completely 80% of threads on xda are usally user error. Do you know how much actual reading you would have to do the skim through the nonsense people do. If you are running Blazer and flash and AIO for Calks - guess what you may have issues. These are the people posting that nonsense...sfhub dont drive yourself crazy since if he temp roots or regular root he is still changing files ......**smdh**

[Q] How long for Rooted CWM Odin EI22 after OTA?

How long does it take the devs to root the OTA and slap it into an odin with CWM injected?
Since the OTA starts tomorrow, are we looking at 1 more day? or a week?

Probably 20 minutes after someone gets the file to a DEV. It doesn't take long to repackage with CWM and root.

That depends on the DEVs free time. Custom ROM's with all enhancements generally won't be see until full source drops with a tar. This has been generally been done the night of the OTA but so far nothing on Samsung's site except the kernel. You will see themed ROMs with kernel enhancements real soon though. Usually before your get the OTA notification if you are in the last 50% in the queue.
I don't see why you wont be able to just odin acs recovery and then flash su.zip

My thoughts exactly.
Afterwards go into your system\app directory (using root explorer) and make some room (delete the Asphalt Demo) and then install BusyBox (busybox installer on the market).
note: my busybox wouldn't go in until after I restarted my phone.
I don't want to fuss with deleting one thing to run another. Seems like the best option is an Odin package but looks like that will be a while. Everyone is focusing on zip packages and multi step processes.

^this. I'm waiting on a one shot package that will wipe my phone and I can start from fresh.
Right now there are a lot of things I want/need so that's why I'm holding off on updating to GB, if I ever do.
I see fixes for some issues:
Logsprovider
Hotspot hack
No CIQ
Root
Busybox
Super user
But nothing really in one odin .tar file yet.
If you choose to do the OTA, you must Odin a custom kernel before Odin of clockwork or else clockwork won't stick and you will be shot back into stock recovery. I used mkasik's EI22 keyfix kernel but nubernal should work as well.
Not really what you are looking for, but if you get tired of waiting and try to go stock OTA or just flash the google download you will run into that issue which stumped me for a bit.
I'm gonna wait... im just surprised that more people aren't asking about this.

i dont think they would be stupid enough to push out an update that would force everyone's phone to lose all their apps and settings, unless of course that update was an ICS update.

Install OTA, then download and install busy box and superuser app. Then use Odin to flash rogue stock ek02 kernel/recovery in development section. That should be all you need to do, to gain root.

first of all the update is not going to flash if you are rooted.
second if somehow you flash it just root like you did the first time.
updates don't wipe data but if you try to flash it on a rooted/non stock phone you are going to have to wipe and reflash anyway.
Hmm, hopefully I get this updated soon. Thanks for the help so far
Ok, I've been reading in the threads mentioned in the posts above and still feel somewhat confused. Apparently in the thread with "dump" in the title, I have to be on a stock EG30 "odexed" rom to flash the EK02 update.
I am currently on stock EG30 "deodexed" rooted rom. So do I need to first revert back to a stock odexed EG30 rom? Then odin the ek02.tar? Then find a root method?
So they've started releasing the OTA?

Man why dont you just update with one of the rooted roms in the forum instead of dealing with all this what should I do and I am confused. All you need is here and if you are rooted already why are you worrying about the OTA..
I believe FOTA apk will stop you from seeing that. There is a disable update script you can run that freezes that(pm disable com.samsung) link here ). I mean way more options than what to do is says I have the update

Rooting a sph-d710 already updated to ICS via OTA

I have an unrooted Samsung Galaxy S2 Sprint version that I never rooted, and I just updated to ICS stock (over the air update). While I had rooted another, this is my wife's phone and I want to root it to get better control over the battery issues. I read the wiki, but it all was dated to before the update.
Do any of the rooting methods work once you have already upgraded to the latest ICS update that came from Sprint?

I am unsure of the rooting methods at this point. Did you check the one click rooting sticky? I would put the phone in download mode and odin a rom of your choosing (like el29 from sfhub) then one click root, recovery and flash a rom of your choosing. This process is of course only if the existing methods don't work with the OTA.

Will this work on a Sprint Samsung S2 running...
All,
I'm a total noob to rooting etc. A few questions to those who have done this. I have a Sprint Galaxy SII (model SPH-D710) running 4.0.4 w/Kernel ver. 3.0.15-SPH-D710.FH13-CL663858 [email protected] #3 - First can this be rooted? Are there any drawbacks or issues doing so (things not working etc.)? What is the best process and can anyone direct me to the best method to date?

You have to remember that even though you are saying you are a noob it does not mean that you should not read, read, read and then read some more. Honestly I have no problem with your questions but if you took some time to read stickies and info in the forum you would have found the answers to your questions. Also a Google search referencing Wifi Hotspot and not being rooted would of taken you to FoxFi. I suggest you give that a try prior to rooting if thats all you really need.
Remember either xda or Google is there to help you but they can not if you do not ever use them properly. My last piece of advice if you are not one to do reading or not one to really want to take risk. DONT ROOT try FoxFi or the host of other tether options that dont require root
I second using Febby's method - that's how I would do it. Its the scalpel vs. ax analogy - Febby uses a scalpel, those who re-flash an entire rom use an ax. Both work if you follow directions.
Only down side to febby's method is yellow triangle. It is easy to get rid of any way.

How about JB?
My question is similar, only my phone (a Sprint Galaxy S2 [SPH-D710]) is already updated OTA to Jelly Bean. I'm looking to root only (keeping the stock ROM). Can someone point me to the correct guide for this?
Do I just use the GB27 One-Click from here?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31961585
With that One-Click, are these the correct instructions?: http://www.rwilco12.com/Files/Devic...Sprint) (SPH-D710)/Tutorials/SPHD710-Root.php
In the above instructions is mentions flashing a stock kernel to remove the Yellow Triangle and reset the Odin count, but if a stock kernel is what I am going for in the first place, is there a way to save a step?
Are these instructions a better way to go?: http://www.android.gs/root-galaxy-s2-official-jelly-bean-4-1-2-xwlsn/
Or how about these instructions?: http://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=166

OK,
You are another admited nooby, and that is OK.
However please, please take some time and read throught the stickies, how tos and follow up posts to the Original Posts.
You WILL save yourself a whole lot of time, frustration and possible flaming.
If you want the latest JellyBean Stock follow the insturctions here. They are detailed and precise.
It is the one-click root method that will give you the ernel, ROM and Modem in one shot.
You will NOT have a custom recovery (with CWM) and will NOT have the yellow triangle.
Not that you must run the one-click 'as administrator' first AND put your phone into download mode before before plugging it into the PC.
If you want a custom recovery (Garwynn's or Agat's) then you can keep the yellow triangle away by using Mobile Odin Pro. BUY it in the Play Store. Download the custome recovery of your choice and open Mobile Odin, Select Kernel, navigate to the .tar file you've transfered to your SD card and 'flash firmware'.
Really though please take some time, don't be impatient. It can save you making an expensive paperweight and have a taste of sh%t in your mouth.
Good luck.
Thanks!

Thanks. Your link is the link that I list at #5, above. I took the time to read through many many threads on this, but with so many unfamiliar terms and procedures, I wanted to make sure that I was following the method that will get me the results that I am after. Thanks so much for the confirmation!

Rooted with Zedomax + Caulkins Rom. Constantly rebooting.

Reboots usually about 10+ times a day. During calls etc. Any way to remedy this?
Note: it doesn't restart from the very beginning it freezes, goes black then boots up the lock screen all media connects are restarted etc.
From the limited amount of research I've done the zedomax method for rooted is no longer used? (Currently I get the yellow exclamation point at reboot).
What do I need to do (in lame mans terms) to get my phone back to normal?
TIA!
Easiest way is to one click Odin. I'm not sure which your on. I'm assuming GB. So you can one click Odin to stock el29+ root. Or if you want one click Odin to FF18 or FH13 to upgrade to ICS. And if your on ICS you can use triangle away to get rid of yellow triangle on the splash screen.

Using ZedoMax kernel is your problem from the get go. Even Zedomax would have a good laugh at that. Its an OLD OLD kernel.
EG30 and EK02 can be rooted via usb with the zerg exploit and sfhubs auto root made that easy. Easiest way with EL29 or the newer ICS firmwares as well is just to flash a prerooted one click. But you can always odin a kernel with custom recovery and flash super user.

There's been quite a few new epic users to the forums lately as their evo phones were replaced with this one for a replacement thru sprint. Quite a few old threads on rooting, kernels and themes have been resurrected in the last 30 days or so as a result.

Other relevent info is I am using a Mac and can't open .exe files. Is there a work around? . . . and do I need to unroot before doing this one click odin or will this just replace my old root while preserving my info?
Thanks.

Use Heimdall to flash tars then. Grab the one for FH13 if you want the latest official ICS or EL29 if you want the last GB out. Sfhubs one click threads have a second post with the tars as for FH13 dunno how Garwynn and rwilco have their stuff arranged.

I would like ICS. I haven't done any rooting/ flashing in a long time. Is there anyway you'd be able to explain so that an idiot like me could understand please?
(I looked at sfhubs page and got really confused)
You can check out QBking's videos on YouTube he has quite a few tutorials for the e4gt

Thanks, I've seen his videos. I linked to it in my previous post however he doesn't have detailed instructions for Mac users.

You have CWM recovery right?
If so copy Calks rom onto your phone, if you don't still have it there.
Download the EL29 zip file to your phone from http://rwilco12.androidfilehost.com...y Kernels/GB/Rogue Recovery/Stock Repacks/ZIP.
Instll that zip from recovery and reboot back into recovery.
Install Calks Rom again.
You should be fixed now.
If you prefer to go with FH13 (ICS):
Download the AGAT_v0.5.4.zip file to your phone from http://rwilco12.androidfilehost.com...y Kernels/ICS/Agats Source Built Recovery/ZIP
Copy this file to your phone http://d-h.st/Txi
Install the FH13 Rom from recovery.
Instll the AGAT_v0.5.4.zip while still in recovery.
You should be fixed on FH13 now.
If you want the Modem you can download the FH13 modem zip from here and flash it from recovery. http://rwilco12.androidfilehost.com/ModemSite/?dir=MODEMS/ICS/ZIP

Thanks for being my hero. Everything works (so far). And after some trial and error even the wireless tether works. Now if I could just get my iPad to link to my wifi I'd be golden...
Thanks again!

No problem. I am partial to the Sprint hotspot hack myself. In the dev section by rejulus22.

Bump.
Different issue:
1. I keep getting a FI27 Software Update reminder. I am able to clear it out of my notifications but 5-10 mins it's back again. It will interrupt whatever it is I am doing at the moment.
2. Is there a separate current radio I can download? My gps can never find my current location, rendering the turn by turn feature useless since I can't use it.
Any thoughts?
TIA

The link given earlier to download the modems contains the FI27 modem. You could flash that and it may get rid of the update reminder.

What this guy said. Didn't think about that.

Need some help guys!?

My friends has a gs3 he purchased on release day and rooted it. The past week he accepted two ota's which broke his root. So I'm trying to root it for him but here's where the confusion kicks in. On sprints website it actually show these updates are old and not new and there's two more recent ones he never got pushed to him. Right now the phone is on LG2 and won't update any further. What do I need to do to be up to date with root. Should I just look for a way to root this build or try updating it. By the way I haven't seen any root methods for this build which is why I'm asking. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds

Not 100% sure what you're needing. But look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31981341
(Latest stock is LI3)

Thank you! One more question. I'm reading but I don't see anything regarding data wiped. So does doing any of these steps wipe out all data?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
The method he used to root it in the first place should work again. Try that.
Then once it's rooted again go to this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099
Download the file "LI3 STOCK WITH AUTO COUNTER RESET" in the first post and flash the file in recovery. That will put the phone to 100%stock, unrooted, on the latest build.
From that point, if he wants to, he can reroot the phone and install the latest TWRP recovery. After that, tell him not to accept any OTA updates. Come back here to the development forum and someone will have the update in flashable form so that root isn't lost.

Yup thats the most easy way of doing it. you say ur not rooted but do you have custom recovery? If so then re rooting before the flash wouldn't be necessary.
It will not wipe data however its recommended that you do. granted it will probably work just fine if it being installed over top of a stock Rom. Then to keep root/recovery just follow the instructions in the post

I'm not sure if he has a custom recovery but I'm assuming if he was able to accept ota's and install them fine he must have stock recovery. I'll have to check and see a lil later as he's at work now.

Any reason why his phone got these updates pushed back to back? And better yet why did it it stop at LG2 and not push LI3 and the one before that? Those two where his first updates since having the phone and they're mad old lol
Wish you guys had Odin OneClicks like we do for the GS2. Them things are so easy and stoopid proof lol

Sprints update system sucks......As for odin, you select the file you want to flash and click start......pretty stupid proof if you ask me. There is a .tar for the most recent update and the jellybean leak available in the development section.

Yes it is stupid proof but it also makes you have to take an extra step to reset the count. On my phone I just deal with the Odin OC which don't mess with your counts and come rooted then mobile Odin for the rest. Never have to worry about a flash count. But anyways thanks for all the help guys! I'm going to try and get this done tonight. Even though we both going for the note 2 in just a matter of days
