[Q] Have any of you deleted the stock Launcher for whatever ROM and use another one? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Was using [ROM]DARKSIDE-Dewizzed-V2.5.2 [1/27/2012] and i got rid of the stock launcher in favor of GO Launcher and I deleted the stock SMS/MMS for GO SMS.
everything worked fine.....nice and smooth.
But I tried [ROM] Juggernaut v4.1 [Vultures Edition][Team Kang][12.27.2011] and did the same thing.....It runs slow and not smooth anymore...
oh yeah...I used root Explorer to delete the stock apps...
Have any of you done this type of thing???

You don't need to delete anything for future reference. Just hit the use as default.

I never deleted key stock apps like launcher, browser, contact, messaging, etc
Because I had a bad experience with my Old G1 that my 3rd party launcher (launcher pro, go launcher) keep fore closing and couldn't use my phone. In the end i had to flash another rom and lost all my data

Oh ok...thanks for the input.

A safer option is to freeze them thru titanium backup. They arent using up any battery in the backround and you can defrost them if you ever need them.

[Q] What is safe to restore after flashing a _new_ rom?

Pretty new to flashing roms and trying to get it right...
So I'm going from MikFroyo4.5 to Vaelpak 3.2. Is it safe to try to restore my "home" pages using MyBackupRoot? I am going to use it to restore my texts, call log, etc. I know not to do system settings... Also, I backed up only the user apps with Titanium Pro. Advice appreciated!
You can backup all your apps and data, and then restore them. Also you launcher settings. When you restore on you new rom, restore apps and data, but NOT system settings, may get FCs. You're good to go.
I read something about only restoring user apps, not system apps. So I only backed up the user apps. So launcher settings is OK to restore? Is it a problem if I try to do that when I am going to an AOSP rom and my backup was from a sense based rom?
You can't restore launcher settings from sense, since that's not your launcher anymore.
No one said he wasn't using a launcher. I said it just in case.

Yeah, I wasn't going against anything you said, just saying in case he wasn't using a launcher and was trying to switch to aosp from sense, can't restore homescreen setups.
Well in that case, that's correct. But I hope he was using a launcher.
Well, in this case I'm going from one sense based rom MikFroyo to another Vaelpak. But I'm not sure what launcher Vaelpak comes with, and not sure if I should try to restore my home screens or not. I think Vaelpak comes with LauncherPro and ADW. So is that "instead of" the sense launcher? And does that mean I should not try to restore my home/launcher/widgets? Sorry about being confused but I'm just not quite speaking the language yet...
You're fine. Just do everything I said earlier, but no need to worry about the restoring launcher settings, since you didn't have one, and you'll be set, and no, don't restore home screen settings.
VaelPak is awesome. You will enjoy it.

OK, so here's are some really basic questions...
Does sense come with it's own launcher? and are the "home pages" part of the "launcher"?
I guess when I use ADW or LauncherPro I'm not sure what I'm replacing / not using from the original Sense software... lol

Well, sense is basically its own launcher, the plain stock htc sense. You get the number of panels, and the 2 buttons at the bottom. With ADW, launcher pro, ect, you can customize your docks, icons, backgrounds for the launcher, gives you more customization.
I uploaded a pick of my home screen so you can see the launcher, with custom icons. I'm using launcher pro. The second is using the cube transition.
So what would happen if I tried to restore my "home screens" using MyBackupRoot? Would it hose the phone up?
Not really, you just may get some force closes, and to the worse extent a bootloop.
Well, I hate to set it all up from scratch again, major PITA but I guess I'll do that. I could do a nandroid then restore the home screens and if it's bad, go back to the nandroid...
This is the first I've used Titanium Pro, worked great and was fast.

True, but you need to do it to get more comfortable, and yea, the pro version is a lot faster, and you won't have to restore apps one by one when you restore.

prevent Sense from closing GO Launcher

Hi
I use Sense Roms, because i like the mail app, sms app, dialer etc... but I don't want Rosie... so i use GO Launcher as launcher, but it keeps getting fc's.
Anyone knows how to prevent this?
thx
btw. I'm now using seb's AIO v4.0 but I don't think it's rom related...
does anyone else suffer from the same problem, or is it in the end an invidual problem affected by my settings?
what your experiences with other launchers? Do they never fc in a Sense Rom?

I have tried a few launcher apps in the beginning, never had FCs actually. Try to wipe app data or reinstall app. When you first start the new launcher do not forget to tick 'use this as default' option.
Hope this helps.

i do the same thing, but with leedroid HD rom.
i actually delete rosie.apk and launcher2.apk from the system after Go launcher is installed (easy if you're S-OFF), no problems so far
you can always nandroid and try for yourself.
yh i had the same problem with go launcher, the reason is go launcher takes up a lot of ram space, which means it doesn't have enough room work so it F/C.
try Regina 3D launcher, its much smother and its also free

[Q] How to reinstall Sony apps on AOSP?

I have JJ Hybrid 3.1 installed with Sirkays kernel. Is there a way to reinstall some of the Sony apps like Weather Widget, Widget Select Widget, Alarm, Possibly even the home launcher? I tried copying the weather widget apk into system/apps with rw-r-r and rebooted but it still is not available in the ICS widgets menu.

Can anyone recommend a stock ROM without McAfee and Wisepilot (the two apps I am unable to uninstall). Tweaked to be smoother, faster and more stable would be nice also.
Really I would like only Home launcher, Panorama, Weather widget, Alarm, Widget select widget, Turn things on and off widget (or a better status bar with toggles like some ROMs). Everything else can pretty much go to the bin

Install Titanium Backup and remove them.
To use the Sony widgets, you need to have the Sony home launcher. Else, it won't work.
You can easily remove McAfee and WisePilot once you root your phone. Either browse to the app location as root and delete it (or) use Titanium Backup as XperienceD suggested.

I did (tried normal way and with Titanium) and it said they were uninstalled. Reboot the phone though and *POOF* they come back.
try root uninstaller and reboot they are gone for sure,
but why advice everyone titanium back up ?
in my eyes is it a sh*t app

Ah, then uninstall them again, and look for two apks named McAfee and WisePilot, remove them before rebooting and the will be gone.

Then you need to look for another two AFTER uninstalling. I've seen this before and I can guarantee they can be removed, you just need to find the two apks that auto install.
There must be a copy of those two apks somewhere else and that's causing this problem.

Copy .apk files from stock-based roms such as Arconium or MooDeD ICS. They are placed in "app" folder.

[Q] Widgets Dissapearing after reboot, regular launcher, no root

I am completely stock and I have never rooted my phone or done anything other than use Go Launcher Ex up until a month ago. I recently discovered that I don't have to use the TWLauncher but that I can in fact use the regular Launcher on my Epic 4g Touch. So I uninstalled Go Launcher and started using the regular launcher (I'm on FI27 by the way).
The problem is all of my widgets dissapear off of my home screen after each and every reboot (and yes, I wait for Media scanning to complete. Still nothing). This is true for stock widgets and 3rd party widgets. The only issue I've found like this in my Google searches are people that had their apps/widgets moved to their SD card. Mine are not. I'm completely stumped. I really don't want to use the TW launcher and as much as I like the flexibility of Go Launcher EX I really really like the smoothnes and simplicity of the standard launcher and would hate to have to go back either of the other ones.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to do a wipe simply because I am really lazy and don't want to have to reinstall my apps again, but if you think that is necassary please recommend the best way to make the app download and reinstallation as quick as possible for my lazy behind.
Thanks!
App Backup & Restore from play store will backup the apps but not data. There are similar apps for backing up sms and call logs too.

So I'm guessing from your reply that you either A: Have not heard of this issue and therefore do not know of a fix or B: You have heard of it and the fix is to restore my device.
I'll give it another day or two to see if anyone else has come across this and found a fix but I guess I'm gonna have to try a wipe. I just hope that works.
Thank you for your suggestions sir and I will start researching further to try and make my restore as fast as possible.

Methods to auto-control home folders

I would like to know some way to automatically setup folders on a phone. In this case I am concerned with the E4GT running stock FL24. Unrooted methods are preferred, but beggers can't be choosers.
As an example I may get a second phone or flash a new ROM and want to restore my meticulously crafted home screen folders containing apps.
If there is a file I can copy and then paste into my new phone/ROM that is great. A script that takes care of things is good. An app that I am unaware of to manage things works too. I am wide open and can root IF need be but prefer not to.
Are you using a stock browser? Because most 3rd party browsers like nova and adw will have a backup option. No need for root to use those. Juat need to install it from market

Thanks! I am using a stock browser but can try this. I am still happy to accept other solutions from others but so far this is helpful!
Just tried it with folders. It keeps placement of the folder aa well as whats inside them. The only thing is when you install that launcher you must set up your screen like its new. Then push menu while you are at your home screen. Go to your launcher settings for instance I use adw. So I would choose adw setting. Then backup and restore. Then backup. This is a better solution for you. You asked if you can switch it between phones. Well if you move from samsung to say htc well the stock launchers will change. So you may be able to save the touchwiz settings. But wouldnt be able to restore those on the sense launcher. Good luck. And if you are new to launchers I would suggest nova or adw. And rhe paid for versions are even better:beer:

You can try doing a data and app backup using mybackup pro. That should reinstall all your apps and then put everything on your home screen how it should be. I use nova launcher so I restore through there automatically when I restore all my apps and app data with mybackup pro.
