Hi I just got a brand new Xperia Play today I turned it on and it had 18% battery life left.
I wanted to ask how long shall I charge the Xperia Play for ?

Leave it on the charger until it says 100%. In fact, it would be even better if you let it go completely dead and then charged it. I usually just put mine on the charger when I go to bed and it's full when I get up. I think it only takes a couple hours otherwise.

Does anyone know why the battery goes down even when the phone is idle? By go down, I mean quite recognizably as my old ZTE blade didn't seem to do this significantly.

That happens with my Xperia Play as well even though I don't have any apps running. Btw how much does yours go down by? A few percent is normal.

Because you're device still requires power to run, even if it's in the idle state. When the phone is in Standby and Idle, it will require far less power then say if the screen is turned on but not doing anything. You may have to see if there are other running services in the background (which is most likely the case).
After rooting and removing most/all bloatware, you'll notice that standby/idle take hardly any battery life from your phone.
Hi! Every phone that was newly bought should charge up to 8 hours. Every phone dealer told me that, I even charge mine 8 hours when I first bought it. It'll be better if you charge it 8 hours at first, the battery will last longer.

I actually don't think charging it for 8 hours prolongs the battery life.
4 hours is enough.
It doesn't matter with modern lithium batteries, just charge it as and when you like

Yeah true. Just charge it until you reach 100%. It doesn't make a difference if you leave the charger in or not after 100%

Ok I got a new extended battery what souls I do to condition it so my phone will charge to to 100%
I'm in rooted so can't wipe battery stats
Also is there a way to check its capacity so I know its fully charged

Since you aren't rooted, best you can do is:
-Charge to 100%
-Let the phone die, so its manually turns off
-Charge back to 100%, use as normal

Aww, c'mon Roxx, you know that's not the way. Even HTC says don't let your battery die.
Let it drop to under about 50%, then charge for 8 hrs, while off. Unplug, boot up let it settle in for a few mins, then power down and charge for another hour.
Then boot up.
That's the best for unrooted phones.
I just feel odd about killing batteries and anything 4 my 2nd question good app to monitor my battery......most don't have good info

Well it gives the lithium batteries the best chance to discharge, then started the process over. Continued practice of that is bad, but for 1 power cycle, it is okay. Though through normal usage, you should charge it whenever it gets low

Battery Moniter Widget is the best, and I don't think you need be rooted for it.
Rexx, I agree that doing it once may not be bad, but I say why take chances, ya know?

Yea a good app for non rooted phones.
And well fair enough, especially for those less experienced.
This was posted awhile ago on the xda EVO 4G forum and it seemed to work for me.
1) turn ON Phone & charge for 8 hrs.
then
2) unplug charger - turn OFF phone & charge another hour (1)
then
3) unplug charger - turn phone ON, wait (2) minutes then,
turn OFF phone & charge another hour (1).
Your battery has been set and your battery time should be doubled.
This as per HTC​
I have also found that using the app: Juicedefender
works great even with its default settings.

Hey everyone,
I received my Xperia Arc S 3 days ago. Well, since it's my first smartphone and I was not used to it I first used all the battery and then I gave it 12hours of charging.
Well it seems I did it wrong since Li-Poly batteries shouldn't be charged on that way. So, here are my questions.
1. The fact of letting my phone completely discharge and then give it 12 hours charge was a BIG MISTAKE?
2. How can I correctly charge my device?

I've done the same:
buying
completely discharged
charged for many hours
I haven't any battery drain or something and I also heard you should do that (correct me if I'm wrong).

Well I thought it would be the right procedure as well but it seems that with Li-Poly batteries we shouldn't let them completely discharge as it may affect its life. However, I am not sure and I still don't know if it's the truth! Let's wait for some more feedback and see what's coming.

If I'm correct previous batteries had 5% circles and current batteries have about 20% (as a full charge).
He means that everything is okay and you won't have any problems.

Well, plus, can I remove the device after 3 / 4 hours (as long as it says 100%) of charging and normally use it with only that time of charging? What about the opposite? Let it charge all night long while I sleep? No problem with both methods?

No problem with both.
Usually I'm charging over night too.
But if I remember right a complete charge only needs about 2 hours.

Well, my one is charging for 2 hours now and it says its battery is 88% charged!
I have to leave in 1:30 hours and I guess It'll be fully charged then. Hopefully I won't have to charge it again during the night
You can plug it in as long as you want, nothing will happen exept the battery gets charged.
Sometimes I plug it in 5 mins before going out and my battery is ok.

Hey guys! Just gotten my note 2, and gonna drain the battery down soon, should I plug it in and charge for 8 hours straight from zero? Should this be done with the phone off? Or this doesn't matter anymore?

I usually do it. Zedomax recommends it, and it doesn't hurt anything to do so.

if the battery takes to long to kill then simply its already calibrated
many people don't know how a none-calibrated battery acts and think "battery life is great but it will get better later!"
if anyone of you happened to have a nokia phone in year 2000ish and still have it around i recommend you to go get a replacement battery for it and see for your self
unless the new battery jumps from 100% down to like 80/70% in no time then take too long to drain from 10% or something like that (in short battery acting weird)
then its already calibrated which is the case in all new phones/batteries
TL;DR
unless the battery is acting weird and not taking too long to kill then you dont need to do that

Thanks a lot I got my retail set from a carrier, so glad to have joined the note 2 community coming from the s3 :X so I just charge it up to full as per normal yes?

This charging a long time first usage is also an old thing from the old nicd and nimh batteries..
in fact li-po and li-ion wont even charge after they are done, overcharging them means they explode/burn or get damaged.
there are built in safety features to prevent that.
and pulling it down to 0% means nothing since modern nimh, li-po, li-ion batteries don't got the memory effect.
actually going down to 0% would only test if the low voltage cutoff works as it should or if you damage your battery.
no need for that!

Batteries that comes with the latestmpgones these day do not need to be charged for 8 hours!
Just charge it till its full and continue to enjoy it!
You can preserve the life of you battery by not fully charging it and you can damage it by draining completely. I've no source for this information.

So here's my problem:
About few weeks ago, my battery started to fooling with me. When I use it for Facebook, Twitter and normal web surfing, the battery goes down, fast, from 100% to 10% took only about one hour plus. Then I left it aside. Check it again after 30 minutes, the battery went up to 27%. So I think battery was miscalibrated so I tried to calibrate the battery using all the guides I can find on the net for weeks but none worked.
So what should I do? Should I change a new battery?
Did u try calibrate it properly, eg.. wait till its charged fully then wipe them. using an app from playstore is the best way. If u wipe stats when its not charged100% then it will start jumping percentages.

Standard batteries are terrible anyway. I couldn't do without my 3600mah one now.
As wedgess said, get an app for calibration. I use 'battery calibration' (simple enough) which works perfectly for me

PROBLEM SOLVED... this works with all xperia play models and it fits with the back cover that comes with the phone...O and it comes with the instruction on how to change the battery build prop.

Well try to underclock it and make the screen brightness lowest. Try to look at the battery stats too as you may have an app which is using a lot of resources of your phone. If you can live without your phone then switch it off completely, try to find the charger with highest mAh output (the higher the mAh output is the quicker it is charging), connect your turned off phone to the charger, make sure it's charging, leave it for 2 days charging like this and then disconnect it, boot it straight to the recovery, wipe the battery stats from recovery. If this is not going to help then I seriously have no idea what else you can do.

Phone's not overclocked, brightness is always low, I used it for texting my gf for whole day, played word search for a while and my phone left 50%, no data no WiFi nothing, When I turned on WiFi and keep using it, battery drops fast. Reached 4% I left it, went back to 16%, continue using, left 4 % again, left it again went back to 10%, then I used it till 4% again, now left 6%. Using stock charger but with different cable since my stock cable is broken. Is that related? If yes I'm going to get a new charger.

I bought my S3 on july and no flaw what so ever, I used to play PPSSPP, I would say its a battery draining app cuz I needed the phone at full power to play, I could play while changing and the battery actually charged, but now. Even by using Mango (which doesn't need much resources) and power saving turned on, plugged in and the phone's charge drops instead of rising. Any idea as to why?

yes, im rooted. in terms of what im using: i am running Official Android 4.3, dont know about Bootloader or Modem, sorry
Im rooted and on 4.3 and I can go from 100% to 30% in a little over 4 hours. The only way I can get my phone to charge now is through a wall charger. Even then its taking forever. Not like it was before when I was on 4.2

my phone only accepts OEM Samsung chargers (cant use any other charge cable or box), and a really good wall plug in order to charge
That happens to me sometimes too but usually it charges normally after a reboot.

i shut mine down every day before bed, so i think im giving it enough reboots
