[Q] Enabeling swap in custom kernels - Samsung Galaxy W I8150

Hi everyone,
What about adding swap support to custom kernels to overcome SGW ram shortage? Couldn't post to dev forum so posted here. Please someone reply.
I have my SGW now for about one month and its my first android device.
I havevsome years ofvexperience with Linux and while i was playing around with my phone i have experienced som lag while switching homescreens on Go Launcher.
I have quite some stuff on screens and ex taskmanager widget shows me
that my mem is easily filled when doing some more stuff.
My phone got root and terminal also set up so thought
i go make a swap file on internal sd to give phone possibility
to swap mempages out of ram when needing mor mem.
Been there done that, saw that even if swap helper progs (i.e. mkswap, swapon,
swapoff) exist gives error that kernel lacks swap support.
Dont know why swap not implemented in stock rom, went ask internet for
custom kernel for SGW. Reading Kezras custom rom thread and beeing unable to post
questions to him on his thread , got me here.
I ve also read on internet that there are custom kernel for other devices with
swap activated. Though our fon has quite good processor it lacks ram,
so i wonder if custom kernels here have swap activated and perhaps start discussion here about pros and cons.
Thanx for any replies.

Hi its me again,
searched and found this thread for Htc that points out it could make sense to add swap to phons with little ram but strong cpu .
Check it out here.

But, is our Wonder short of RAM, or short enough to require swap partition on slooooow SD, or comcache using precious processing cycles to compress/decompress ??
Would using memory management, such as zeppelinrox V6 TurboCharger, not be more appropriate?
V6 Main thread
Latest Beta's
Without having to further reduce RAM for comcache!!
or swap partition on SD which is much slower than RAM?
But, I agree, it would be interesting and useful to have Custom ROM, which supported swap or comcache, even for the ability to compare and contrast.
But, there will always be a trade-off when using either comcache or swap....it's just a question of whether the individual user finds it acceptable.

Hi there irishpancake! Just testing the V6 supercharger myself seems pretty ruthless...keeping my used RAM at 230MB almost permanently and lag free! Doesn't quite have the same effect with a custom launcher but TW is flying. I think ur right about our device needing memory management more than anything.

@irishpancake
I ve tried the script you suggested,
and it 'feels' very promising.
I appreciate also your speakout for activating swap support in custom kernels/roms so anyone could choose freely what way to go.
Still virtual ram don't interferes with good memory managment and
with swapspace you have a little extra even if you dont use it and the
slow access is relativated through paging. Wonder if one can set page granularity in kernelconfig ?
By the way if anyone could point a
Rom/kernel developer at this thread as i cant. I would like to hear their opinion on all that.
Thanx for replies so far ....

Hi 2g11 man.....
sorry, I just saw your PM, about V6, and just to say, I find it definitely snappier, and as you have noted, very good on the memory management.
I do not have enuff knowledge to actually give figures or stats, but it just feels much faster, and responsive, lag-free.
I am still using the Update 9 RC4, so I will try out the latest version Update 9 RC6 ASAP....
I use Launcher Pro, just coz I hate TW, and it is remarkably good with the V6 tweaks........and I am still Stock ROM 2.3.6 [KJ6].

Here is a nice article about linux and swapping.

And here info about page size

As i read here
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/...ot-login/437078-changing-pagesize-kernel.html
changing pagesize is no valid option to influence swapping behaviour. We have to stick to
"swappiness" kernel parameter which can be changed 'online' though.

@irishpancake I guess I didn't properly set the ADW Pro I was testing as the 'default' launcher as described by THE-E in another thread. Will try out the new script as well. Just wondering, do you use options 7,13 and 20 as described in Rio's Black Keys thread? Maybe some other options you've tried?

[Q] Low available memory after flashing evolved rom final

I flashed the final evolved rom to my evo "r3 charged final"
I have noticed that with all the roms I flashed since 2.3 came out that i have very little free memory the previous rom I had about 130 megs but now I'm running 80 -100 and that is with a task killer set on 1 min kill intervals.
I read about low ram and something called HSPL but i have no idea what it is or how I can flash it
can any one help
also on the rom install i wiped the phone and even formatted the sd card so i know the install was clean ( it also runs really good until the memory gets below 70megs )
thanks for your help
Had the same problem, you need to partition your SD card and install apps 2 SD., I use one called dta2sd( dark tremors Apps2sd. Before using I used to get low memory messages all the time...
Give it a try it helped me out..
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
is this for you to move your apps to or is this to use like ram it appears that my phone is running low on ram for the running processes but not room for storage ( I moved almost all my apps to the sd card already )
thanks for your quick reply above
Think its for more memory space for apps, but it must create more system memory as well, because before I used it I had moved all my apps to SD, but I was still running low on memory. Since Ive used apps2sd ive had no more memory shortages
Hope you like that Rom I've used it my self and its a good one.

I just partitioned my card but it did not affect my free available memory but i now have tons of storage space on my phone.
thank you for the advice though i really like having all the apps on a partition freeing up space in the phone any way ( i use alot of apps )

sounds like you don't quite understand the difference between ROM/storage space and RAM/memory.
A lot of people use memory and storage interchangeably but that is not accurate.
The OP is having a problem with low memory/RAM meaning that the OS and running programs are utilizing too much RAM, IE too many apps or processes are running or there is a memory hole/leak somewhere. He is not having a problem with storage space or room to install additional applications or store additional data.
you can use the V6 supercharger or Car-o-dope tweaks (i think thats what it is called) they will increase your RAM
If you get the RC4 release of the V6 (its still stable but not on the main page) you should do option 7 and 20. Be sure to nandroid before.

Thanks for the heads up on the RC4 release of the V6 I put it in and it did help my memory on this rom . So after partitioning and running the script I just have one strange question.
Does this rom have a built in power battery saver? i am not running any sort of battery saver, I am running a task killer still but only to see free ram since the script does the task killing now. I notice my wifi shuts off when the phone sleeps and that I have sleep mode that enables at about 11pm. Is there a way to kill this since I do most of my computer geek stuff late at night.
I have looked all through my apps and i have nothing installed that i believe could be doing the power conservation stuff
thanks

[Q] SuperCharger script?

If you look at the options available at the number input stage, one of these can remove supercharge settings.
I prefer ro zeppelinrox's v6..it's more reliable..

I dont know its hard to say. Ive used the v6 on 3 roms and its abit of a does it or does it not. Plus its hard to say. But it does free up some memory from looking at task manager it was always between 180 and 200mb of ram which is good.
At the minute im using ram manger and the ram is up around 220 to 250 but smooth just have it on normal balance setting.
Everyone is going to have their favorite's. I personally found the v6 to be annoying when setting it up and trying to get it 100% sc. But it seemed to work at the end of the day so cant argue.
A tricycle is easy to ride and is for kids.
And that app is a a tricycle, missing a wheel, and pretending to be a ferrari - it does nothing for the launcher or multitasking and you have to pay for the third wheel.
You can get the same effect as that app with autokiller or auto memory manager - for free.
I do have the V6 script in my phone now so based on your replies guy, i guess i'm gonna stick with the script instead of the RAM Manager.
@Zeppelinrox,
If i am to un-supercharge the script, the data of V6 is still in the phone, right? Where is it located then? Thanks!
If you unsupercharge the only thing left on the phone itself is nothing
But all the files stay backed up on the sd card for easy re-resupercharging

I'd like to know if anyone running the script on the SGW has had problems with the stock browser, particularly trying to open more windows/tabs. I realised the moment I opened a second tab the the phone froze while opening the web page and took several minutes before killing the browser. I've never had problems with tabbed browsing so its certainly linked to the V6 aggresive memory management. I'm also aware the browser can use up huge RAM(upto 100MB and over) depending on how many and how big the web pages you are opening. Any help here would be welcome.
PS: I'm running the RC6 Version of the script.

[Q] Ram doesn't add up? (Not the usual question)

Hello,
So I just recently got my Nexus, and I'm really really loving it. I had a question about the RAM. I'm on stock un-rooted and I noticed I had a little less that 700 MB ram. I know that's for system or gpu or whatever so I'm ok with that.
What I'm confused about is, I'm currently using 400 MB of it. If I combine the totals from the "Running Apps" section plus what is in the "Cached" section, it doesn't come close to the total 400MB being used.
So where is the extra Ram being used from? How can I free some of it up?
I've been reading that task managers are a no-no for ICS, so I'm more curious about which apps are killing my ram.
Thanks in advance

Well sure in theory make the phone run faster. I imagine having more free ram available to be used in the cached application section and not the "running application section" will help make apps load quicker too. My friend had a desire and the amount of ram she had did drastically effect her phone performance.
But also because I'm curious about where is that extra 200 or so MB of ram is being used from?
Linux shares ram within apps/processes in a very complex way where even the experts have difficulty explaining exact tallies on ram levels. This is why different apps report different free ram values like os monitor vs system panel vs stock settings etc. So i wouldnt wprry about how android OS shows your ram value in settings, its not gonna add up and its a tricky question to ask.

Hmm alright. So basically it's not something I should worry about? It's quite a large discrepancy. I guess I'll worry about it once I have errors that are "low ram" or something to that effect.
Thanks anyway
It's the discussion like there was in the galaxy s forum. The not displayed ram is used by the kernel it self and by the GPU. And besides it's a good thing to have a full ram in Android, because then many apps are pre loaded in the ram and can start faster this way.

Its always been like this on my android phones, i wouldnt worry. For example if you kill all current apps, you wont see free ram increase at the exact level of the total of all closed apps. Too much overlap and ram page sharing i think.
Don't worry about it. Some ROMs e. the stock ROM, don't have a seperate RAMDisk.
So, basicly, the ROM dumps some cached processes on to the RAM directly "clogging" it. If you however, have a custom ROM, eg. CynagonMod, the system uses half of the RAM it would use as a stock ROM, because cm uses a RAMDisk, which uses a minimal amount of space, on the device's memory.
But, there's absolutley nothing to worry about
Enjoy the phone and leave the RAM, as it is

Also, think you're in the wrong forum.

Speed Up The Galaxy Y

Speed up the galaxy y smartphoneGuys today I am going to teach you how to speed up the galaxy y.The galaxy y has many problems.Low ram and processor speed being one of them. However, this is mostly due to factors which can be reduced and avoided. This guide is divided into two parts.Root section and Non root section. The rooted users can follow the non root section too but the non rooted users cant follow the root section(Duh!!)After following these steps your galaxy y should run like a galaxy s2!!!:laugh::laugh:
Non Root Section
Apps
Get these two cool apps to boost your phones speed:
1)Android Speed booster(its Free)
2)Smart Ram booster(free and paid)
Some ppl use Nq mobile booster but i personally think its meant for high end phones. The Nq mobile booster itself hogs abt 20 mb ram in the background and,for the most part, its like an antivirus.
Widgets
Widgets are meant for quick access and are one of android's biggest selling points. However, loading up your home screen with widgets can be counterproductive as they hog ram.one or two widgets are O.K but over three? cause for worry. And,avoid interactive widgets like animated ones.they are ram hoggers!!
Service Check
Many people will be surprised to see this here but really, its one of the most important steps.Long press on the home screen.Go to Add>Shortcuts>Settings>Running Services. It should then place a shortcut on your home screen.Periodically, click on the shortcut and check how many services are running in the background.Useless ones like games services can be terminated!
This step may sound tedious at first, but itll soon beccome a habit for speed geeks.Try this step, youll be surprised how many useless servicves can be terminated, thus freeing up precious ram...
Antivirus
Are you using lookout? if yes, then change to AVG.Lookout hogs over 25 mb ram in the background!!Sorry lookout fans!!
App configurations
Have you configured a app to run in the background?? if so ask yourself this questiono I really need that service? At the cost of ram??If the answer is no,then change the app configuration. If its yes, then you arent a speed freak
Launchers
Launchers are awesome.period! Not only are they more customizable and look better, many a time, they also use less ram than your stock launcher! So,what are you waiting for,if youve not already got one, them get one!!!Some of the best launchers(graded on speed, storage usage, and memory)are:-Lightning launcher,Adw launcher and launcher pro.Go launcher uses too much ram and storage, making it an ideal choice for high end phones but not for the y!!
Root Your Phone!!
The following steps require root access. So go ahead root your phone! its 99.9% safe!Just google root the galaxy y and there appears the process! Its a really simple process really.Just6 downloading a file called update.zip and installing it in recovery!
Root Section
V6 Supercharger by zeppelinrox

Apps
Get the following apps for root to speed up your phone
1)Autokiller memory optimizer
2)Game booster
I dont think they are available on play store,so get them as apks!
Bloatware and Crapware
Apps preinstalled by the manufacturer and wireless carrier are called bloatwares. Most of them are absolutely useless and do nothing but hog ram and storage. So,do you want them on your phone?Hell no!!So get a root file explorer and delete them in system/app!!
Custom Rom
A custom rom can greatly enhance your phone!Besides, its also a certificate of geekiness! So,get a custom rom today!!But before that,i would like to say that custom roms and V6 Supercharger dont mix well. So,first check whether your rom is compatible or not before running V6 supercharger.
Authors NoteI would first of all like to say that I am not responsible for any damage to your device which may have occurred from not following some root steps properly. It is,as i said,99.9% safe but some noobs will have still bricked their phones!Secondly,I would like to ask you not to copy my guide onto other forums.Lastly, please rate this thread five stars if it helped.New steps will be added soon!!
Thank you ...

On the defensive now, apps like speed booster just kill unnecessary apps and clear cache, thus giving a quick, temporary, but effective speed boost.thus, they dont need root
As for antivirus,in this day and age its just stupid not to have an antivirus.AVG used5mb ram, lookout uses 26!thus i say switch to AVG.
By app config,i mean the setting of the app.for example, enabling real time scanner on a antivirus could have a negative effect on performance.such settings can be tweaked inside the app itself.
V6 supercharger works 90%of the time.and cuz of xda, even the other 10%can get it to work!!
I didnt get ur look above.
And,noobs are not generally speed freaks.so,i thought any not noob would know the difference between bloatware and important app
And custom roms give speed increases and a new lease of life to devices.
Thanks for the advice,
Hope i clarified things.

all task killer not kill unnecessary apps, they kill random unlucky apps. they don't know which one is unnecessary. if you open browser then need do something like check your mail, then your task killer think your browser is useless because it' not active, then all your opened page is lost and need to reopen (download). that's not fast
and what do you mean with cache? io/storage cache in memory? only kernel can do it, and it's completely automatic. and cache make io/storage access faster. or disk cache? you need root access.
and android already have build in task killer which is already working great in gingerbread.
antivirus? freaks don't need antivirus. freaks read apps permission. freaks not install apps from untrusted source. freaks aware if something wrong with his/her device.
good custom rom give speed improvement. bad one is not. the question is which one is good ? if your answer is non noob would know which one is good, then all non noob already know all you tips. they don't need it.
i love android. unfortunately android community have a lot of myth and misconception

if you insist...in a more explained reason. no user level app could kill another user level app. more ram space is also always be a bad idea in a linux based system like android. a simple test with an app like antutu will shows you an objective and measurable result. no performance boost

personally I prefer to use none of it. no malware reported could damage our system. most of them only a kind of data stealing app. we could filter it faster than any antivirus did. even if we accidentally installed one, we can simply uninstall it. system damage count-->zero. the ram usage is only one thing. we should also consider the cpu load on our device. these kind of app use more resource than usual app.

can you run it on stock rom with stock kernel? of course not. you can check the values between this tweak and the one in the system. most of them are different.
1. these tweak needs a custom kernel with init.d support.
2. galaxy series tweak like adrenaline, stamatis's or nitrospeed is more favored since they're specially designed for low ram devices like sgy. v6 is too general and not suitable with our device. you should understand it better than anyone else

3. most of custom rom have their own tweak. no need to add more tweak.
I didnt get ur look above.
copied-->any proof on it? most of these app just give placebo effect. a simple test with an app like antutu will shows you an objective and measurable result. no performance boost

nope...even a dev need that list. if this thread isn't for noob then why should it exist? most advanced user already know about this stuffs. they even make their own tweak and rom for theirselves.
for the custom rom, are you sure it faster? most of custom roms have a kind of placebo effect, makes the user 'feels' that it faster than stock rom. well, that's a subjective view on it. on an objective view, custom rom have average 1800-1900 antutu score. the highest result is ~2100 with repencis rom. on other hand stock rom could hit 1900+ easily. the highest score is ~2200. none of custom rom could beat it ^,^v

I think you didnt read properly!!!!!!This is to increase speed not battery life!!!!!!And androids default task killer is horrible!!plus game booster is not even a task killer.it is a tool for overclocking. dont ever post cuss words or ill report u to Techno!!!!"

Nope, it doesnt increase battery life too, it instead decreases..androids default task killer isnt horrible, its the correct balance between ram, performance and battery saving.
Game booster never overclocks(lol), its a placebo effect, you need a overclock kernel to do that.
Did I cuss something there? You seriously should learn what "Crap" means..Go on and report to techno, I did nothing wrong there..
LOL you a geek? Seriously dude, wait let me explain the whole thing you got there..you have many misconceptions, its not being a noob thats wrong, drawing misconceptions and false statements make it wrong.

It does give a boost, but you guys dont mean what boost is, it kills the background processes hence giving a boost, but the processes need to run in background at all times, hence they will open again automatically, you close them, then open, its like a cycle, will it increase any battery saving or performance? Its common sense..

Linux doesnt have any viruses(aside from spywares which steal your personal info) like windows..also, its almost impossible to create a virus on android..using avg or any antivirus is waste of ram+battery since the play store applications wont have any viruses in it, unless you download apks from unknown sources, an antivirus is not required. BTW,on my experimentation, avg antivirus with real time scanning uses more battery than a launcher or anything (Dont draw conclusions that its just 5 MB, it needs to run 24x7, needs to verify every site you browse, need to scan sd card every time it mounts up, so it takes more battery than a launcher or a refreshing home widget takes)

Apps
Get the following apps for root to speed up your phone
1)Autokiller memory optimizer
2)Game booster
I dont think they are available on play store,so get them as apks!

Same as the first case, your battery life, performance and everything will decrease, these apps dont do your device any good

Dude, you got any proof for this?
Stock ROM is way better than custom ROM, custom ROMs are just smooth to use thats it, battery backup, gaming, multi tasking, everything is a lot better
than custom ROMs. Go check antutu benchmarks and no custom ROM can touch stock ROMs benchmarks, now that makes some sense isnt it?
Guys u say that avg is best antivirus on speed . I use kaspersky. Is that OK or how compared to avg?

Hey! Give me cookies with choco's :<
I think you should've posted this in Q&A.
anyway, back to the topic,
>overclock to 710 Max and min could be around 350, if you want better battery life lower the Max frequency. use Smartassv2 as the governor.
>enable JIT,
>Don't use compcache!
>uncheck surface dithering (reduces CPU load)
>allow purging of assets
extra tips
Mods like crossbreeder also can make CM7 little fast.
you can share your SD card space with RAM, with Swapper, search XDA for more details.
V6 supercharger is also known as great script for increasing ram usage efficiency.
hope this info helps. you'll find more information if you read around XDA.
Ty for the info just 2 more things how to get crossbreeder and how to use swapper please tell me what's good for swapper ty again for making my wildfire run smooth and the battery is fabulous keep up the good work

I've made a thread about crossbreeder in the themes and apps section, check that out.
Get the crossbreeder Zip files and flash it in CWM recovery. That's it.
Now about swapper,
Android system usually caches apps that it thinks the user would use. That results in faster app opening times and better multitasking, because the apps are already loaded into the RAM.
But when the RAM gets low system clears out cached apps to make space for foreground apps, this is where swapper comes in.
Swapper uses a partition on sdcard (if you have a swap partition),or a file in the sdcard to act as an extended RAM. (sort of )
So, now when the RAM gets low swapper moves some cached data to the sdcard, and frees up space.
So instead of totally killing an cached app, the app still stay cached in the swap file, until its open. Then the data is moved back to RAM.
By the way, swapping will DECREASE the life of your sdcard.
Swapping is not necessary, unless you're into heavy multitasking
Tip - if you have terminal emulator installed, type free and enter, to see the RAM usage
