What's The Point in 720p Front Cam If It Only Transmits Videochat in 320x240? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I traded my S2 for a Galaxy Nexus because I read that the GNexus front cam supports 720p videochat.
Well I just found out that it only supports 720p video RECORDING, not video CHAT. I tested in Skype over WiFi and it transmitted in 320x240, which is much worse than the S2 transmitted at! Same result with Google Chat!
What a crock!

Well you should have no problem trading back for a SGS2. If i had a SGS2 I'd make that trade all day long.

Loading software off of LP cassette tapes to face to face video calls in 30 years... but no 720P?? Pointless.

how is a software limitation the phones fault. they limit it for bandwidth through their servers. I don't understated the problem here? just find a video chat that supports HD on ICS.

Isnt this just a software issue and could easily be fixed in an update? Or better yet any video chat app developer could just update their app to use the full 720p, no?

Yeah you really got hosed getting a 1280x720 HD display, pure Android, native ICS phone instead of your old WVGA TouchWizzed native Gingerbread phone, because video chat makes all the difference. Cry me a

Terminators run on Android

I can't see any Video chat allowing 720p. For a conference, thats 2 HD video streams (in and out). Your not going to be getting the bandwidth required for that kind of streaming
That would require each member to have TWICE that to send and receive. Plus how networking works, you'd bounce between so many servers that there is no way to guarantee that kind of bandwidth.
Streaming video is much different then streaming live service. Quality of Service is very important here to make sure Video and Audio sync up on the fly. It can't "buffer" minutes ahead (time travel?).
This is why most Video Conference are limited to 320x240 or (at most) 640x480. [email protected] is considered pretty good.
The higher the resolution the choppier it will be. And if your looking for a HD slideshow, then video conferencing isn't the best option. Trust me, when your away from your family for a few weeks, you'll take any resolution.
720p capability of the Front Camera is mostly related to taking stills and local recording.

HD Netflix App

****4.0.3 users - it is not currently working on most 4.0.3 builds. I will look into it****
I take 0 credit for this file, but I have rehosted and used it myself. Here is the 1080P Version of the Netflix app.
*im sorry about the first file. Mediafire seems to have botched the original file on upload. Ive triple checked the MD5. Confirmed working on a LTE Nexus on 4.0.2
NEW FILE!
http://www.mediafire.com/?i7j7mdqsgypm9cs
MD5 4CD35DA0E4D392538462BDC390544561
Dont be Tricked!
The app does NOT go full screen like the market version of the Netflix app, but the quality is 10x better. For a test I watched both Tron and Toy Story 3 for 5 minutes each on both apps to allow enough time to buffer. There is no graininess on the HD app and it just pops more. Test both out and see the difference!
* I believe this is from the RAZR but dont quote me on that
I did some HD and Non-HD testing. Now Im running a LTE Nexus on 4.0.2 w/Revolutionary 2.1.0. Ive seen issues with the GSM Nexus not being able to install, but it works perfect on mine. No issues, which is weird. But heres some HD and Non HD photos for comparison:

Not to troll, but why would you want a 1080p source on a 720p screen?
I would want a 720p stream
the current one is just okay resolution wise, and has the buttons active instead of going full screen...
I don't understand why there are so many versions of the app... And why us international customers need to download the app from random links in forums. Instead of blocking in market they should (if they have to) block only in app, and people wouldn't risk malicious apps that steal login details. This only creates trouble for themselves.
Offtopic kind of, but since market enabler isn't working anymore (right?) how do people get apps from other regions without relying on someone to upload to the forum? Is there a trick?

I would think it is better to downscale 1080p to 720p than upscale 480p to 720p.

Mine won't even start up. Screen goes black for a split second, then goes away.
Perhaps it has something to do with the Verizon service.
If someone could take it apart, I'm sure they'd remove the Razr specific resolution and Verizon requirements. Thus make it work for all phones on all networks.
Perhaps post this in the General "Android Development" thread with a request to look at it.

Just like was mentioned, you get better quality when running a 1080p stream and running it on 720 then you do from 480 to 720. I don't know if it bothers everyone but the graininess killed my Netflix experience on the nexus. I'm happy its working for me. But is anyone on a GSM running revolutionary rom? I'm also on 4.0.2

I don't think Netflix does 1080p streams... HD by definition is 720p. So perhaps it is just displaying the movie in it's native form.
Although really, having a HD 4" screen with 300+ DPI, I'm surprised if the 480p movie doesn't look steller.
Posted up and new file. I believe the File got corrupted on the upload. Ive triple checked the MD5 this time. Try it out and let me know!!!

Its only seems to want to stream at 720p, it definitely is not streaming at 1080p and i'm verifying that by looking at my hdtv which shows some minor pixelation (enough to tell me that it's trying to upscale), but definitely an improvement over the stock app

Thinking about a Nitro?...Compare to other 720p phones!

A prevalent question on these Nitro forums is whether or not to buy it...As compared to <whatever> phone. I think the most common comparison is with the Samsung Galaxy S2.
The problem is, the GS2 is an 800x480 resolution phone. To get an idea of why that doesn't make sense, go ahead and set your laptop's screen resolution to 800x600. How's that look to you? Now walk over to your computer and set it to 1280x800, how's that?
Not exactly a controlled and scientific comparison right? Different systems, different screens, different just about everything.
IMHO, if you're considering the Nitro and want to compare it to something?...Then there's really only 1 other phone (in the US, anyway); the HTC Rezound which has the exact same CPU/GPU chipset and 1280x720 screen (LCD though, not IPS). You could also compare with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, there's a LOT of variances there too but it's one of the only phones that also has the 1280x720 screen.
I stress the commonality of 1280x720 because not everything works properly (or even at all) when trying to display at this resolution and also there's potential draw delays to compensate. So make sure you're looking at the other phones that could share this same hurdle so you set your expectations accordingly.
good points, thanks!
To add two more 720P phones were announced at ces coming to AT&T. The Sony Xperia Ion and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD.
@Namura: Appreciate the "cold water" treatment. might make others think twice both for flaming the P930 and the comparison to other units.
@Kindawack: prototypes/announced phones don't figure into what he is talking about, as they are not market launched yet.

Yeah, I wonder about the validity of their info as well. Considering the Samsung Note LTE for AT&T was only announced yesterday at CES...With the only confirms being 1.5GHz Qualcomm chipset (but no verification as to which model) and availability as "in the coming months"...Whereas that pdadb shows it as releasing in Feb and has the same APQ8060 chip as our Nitro.
man, i am way past waiting for the next kick ass phone to be released. I had been waiting since the droid bionic announcement (the 1st one ;-0) prior to getting this nitro.

Same here. As long I am rooted, debloated, custom launcher (zean) and sim unlocked I am good. Custom roms would nice but a lot of time, they are a pain to keep up.

I know benchmarks dont mean squat, but I am surprised how Nitro HD fairs well in any 3D benchmarks especially with 720p screen and sub-optimised soft. See attached Antutu benchmark. Barely behind Galaxy Nexus with ICS.
I just fired up Shadowgun and it does drop a frame here and there. No Tegra afterall but 4.5 inch 720p is looking better than I remember playing on Atrix 4G.
LMAO
IPS is just one type of LCD,
IPS, MVA, PVA, ASV are all good screen types,
the only bad screen is TN, which is never used on high end android devices.
AMOLED sucks IMO, over saturated, and your vision killer. Dont even mention most of the AMOLED on the market is pentile display.

Also curious if anyone can confirm how much better the loudspeaker is as Samsung has been weak there (my original HTC EVO loudspeaker always seems way stronger than Samsung handsets I've tried) but very glad to read (however have yet to actually hear) that its loudspeaker is:
http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-II-Review_id3134/page/3
"The loudspeaker here deserves special attention - it is very strong, stronger than on the original Note, and much stronger than on the Galaxy S III - but what is more, it sounds much fuller and with deeper bass than what we are accustomed to on smartphones."
Can anyone confirm this? -Thanks

Thanks, I guess I'll try to contact Samsung to find out why such features would be removed?..:

Not sure why reviews have mentioned subpar sound recording with video footage on Note 2 unless the following video was flawed (hard to believe the iPhone 5 comparison audio is that bad?):

"PROS

I'll be curious to see what the lag (delay) on this is like when streaming or mirroring from the phone to the TV (hopefully minimal)
It certainly looks a bit more elegant than the normal MHL cables

why would you need it for the nexus 4 given that it supports miracast out of the box?
Because this is the counter part you need to connect to the TV. What else do you think this device is for??

I wonder if the Sony IM10 support would extend to the Sony XPERIA M and XPERIA L
I can't see why it wouldn't unless there is some sort of screen size compatibility issue.... or something.
I wonder about the price...

Talked to a Sony representative yesterday on their chat, to fish for a release date.
All he could provide me with, was "sometime in december".
And he answered that this was for the northeren market.
About the price, the norwegian sony page just says coming soon.
But the english one has it up for "£79.99"
Anyone else heard any specific about dates?

I pre-ordered mine through Clove (I live in the states) on 10/4/13. It was originally set to be released early November then changed to mid-November. I just emailed them asking for an update and received a response that they still expect it to arrive to them this week.
I think £79 a bit steep. Does chrome cast not do the same thing?

I don't think Chromecast can use WiFiDirect at this time which means you have to have an outside WiFi source. For me, I choose not to pay $160/month for cable and internet. This device will save me greatly because I have unlimited data with T-Mobile and can stream all I want.
Clove in the UK has the Sony IM10 listed for £66.66 but appear to awaiting stock at this time.
That's the ex vat price, it's £79.99 which is the rrp.

Don't expect too much from Miracast. I have it built-in to my TV and while it's great to show off a few photos or a webpage it's absolutely not smooth enough for video. It gets stuck from time to time, framerate is low, and the quality isn't brilliant when displaying video. You can't compare it to MHL.

I hope not. Your TV is Branded Sony? If not maybe under Sony Quality Menagement they have to put out a respectable device. I hope will be good because I want buy one. I am just worry about Audio and Video Synchronization when you transmit the signal.

It's one of the brand new Sony Bravias. Clean WiFi spectrum as I live in the middle of nowhere and the only WiFi network near is my own (which wasn't in use at the time).
You can't expect something that has to be encoded on the fly and transmitted over WiFi to be brilliant quality? It's OK for photos and low-quality video like I said, but it's nowhere near good enough for high quality video. Video looks like 480p on YouTube if you play it through Miracast. Sound is good though.

You right. That is to much for that kind of device but you have to admit, it's very convenient. We are not ready yet for 1080p via Wi-Fi.
