[Q] Emulator Optimizations - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I just got an OEM MHL to HDMI adapter and eagerly began to play GBC games on my plasma. Problem is that I get a lot more audio lag when I am playing on the big screen so I was wondering of there is anything I can do to make the emulators run a bit faster. Also is there a way to make the emulator hide the soft keys (trying to avoid burn-in)?

i believe the latest versions of the "oids" (gameboid, n64oid) will hide them automatically after a minute or two without touching the screen. I bought an adapter as well but mine was junk and was not working. can you send me a link with the adapter?
hope this helped!

My version of GBCoid does not, nor my version of Gensoid. I am getting them from the SlideME marketplace so I am not sure if there is somewhere else I should be going.
As for the MHL to HDMI adapter, I picked up the OEM one from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005LGUDKK/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details
Its working nicely so far. Sometimes the AV hiccups and then rehooks up again in a second so I don't really mind. Ive played through an entire game of Toejam & Earl without any major problems so I would recommend it. It says it is for the SGS2 but I can confirm it works fine with the Nexus.
Playing a genesis ROM on my big plasma with bluetooth on really drains the battery (even if it is charging!) So one thing to have in mind. 4 hours took it down to 40%

SGSII MHL/HDMI Adapter

I got the Cable Matters MHL to HDMI adapter (no links- under 8 posts) from Amazon. Perfectly inexpensive, quality is alright. I use my existing adapter heavily; multiple emulators, Sixaxis Control Utility, and along with a keyboard and mouse I use it like a second desktop. However, sometimes video output ceases for a few seconds, giving a black screen on whatever you're outputting to. The video output on the phone is unaffected. Apparently this is a common issue for this adapter. While it's not deal breaking (it still works fine and only cuts out for two to three seconds every five to twenty minutes), I want to know if the official adapter has this issue as well. While it's twice as expensive, I may put down the money sometime down the road to replace the one I've got.
What do you have, how well does it work?

I've played FF7 via FPSe piped to my TV using the OEM Samsung MHL adapter for about 2 hours straight and never noticed any issues. Works great. And I got it for $16 off eBay shipping included.

Sounds like an idea. I use mine for FPSE as well. And N64oid. Spent about an hour playing Super Smash Brothers before work today. Only cut out about three times during that run, lol.
In my experience the cutting is interference from the phones antenna , tried it in airplane mode? WiFi doesnt interfere.

Have not tried airplane mode. Mostly, this is because I often use it as a desktop computer. Actually does the job fairly well. 19" flatscreen TV, BT keyboard and mouse, web browsing becomes a much more pleasant experience.
Mozilla needs to get off their asses and add an option to change the text size though. Dolphin works great but doesn't agree with some sites.
Indeed, that type of use shows the awesomeness of this device, i sometimes use Ubuntu, there's a nice package posted somewhere here, Firefox, GIMP etc on a cellphone is amazing. But enough of that ot, if airplane mode doesn't give you those cuts then when reconnected to cells try to position the cable in a way that it wont catch so much interference, i connect it to a 27" tv/monitor/tuner/almost coffee maker combo, and depending on positioning i can catch the moment when i'm going to loose signal by the tv's speakers catching the interference. Maybe you can find a position where it wont cut, i was able to position it in a safe way, so i believe it might be the lack of any screening at the chip on the cheap design.
one quick question i bought the mhl adapter from dealextreme a while ago but i´ve never really used till now since i bought a ps3 controller, my question regards image quality.
I am aware that the mhl adapter that i bought it isn´t the official but many people rated it high quality, when i play for example an emulator or riptige gp the image quality looks a lot better on the phone than it does on a tv or pc monitor, i´ve tested both, i don´t know if its just because the screen is smaller the image looks sharper but for example playing mario 64 on a big screen the image looks a bit squared/pixelated.
I even installed a pc emulator to compare (looks better), forced anti aliasing with chainfire and still looks pixelated.
The info that appears on my monitor is that the image is working at 1080i 1920*1080.
Is this normal ?
I have the official Samsung MHL adapter. It works great, the only issue is the display is a little bit trimmed off from the top and bottom. I have checked it on multiple TVs so I don't think TV settings are the issue.
mousiope, i know what you mean, it may be disorienting a bit, this is how it works.
The cable output is HD, but its only cloning the phones screen resolution when not playing high res videos, thats what produces the low resolution view on the monitor, so yes, it is because on the small screen it looks sharper. I noticed that on the emulators this is even more visible than on other uses, maybe the emulator itself is generating lower res than phones screen? never really looked at it. Try to change the LCD Density, its not quite the same than higher resolution but helps a little (mind tho that touchwiz doesnt scle properly with changes in lcd density, meaning it gets a little messy, small font, 4 icons per row always etc).
flippity, i never noticed trimming on my MHL output. Will check it tho.

My original adapter has cuts followed by a horrible noise. It was a lot worse when i used the charger that comes with the phone, probably the electrical distribution in my block sucks. Powering the adapter with USB power from my notebook almost solved the problem.
But it's quite pointless powering the cellphone with a computer instead of just using the computer's HDMI... In fact the MHL support sucks IMO, the only true 1080i/p is the video player, not even the photo viewer supports it! The other manufacturers like HTC, LG, Motorola and even NVidia had the descence of releasing an API enabling this functionality since it's not supported by Android itself.
Now that Bloodrainer mentioned, I never used the MHL in airplane mode... interesting...
Well, i get nasty noise in audio output when connected to a cheap car charger, so yea, i'd vote for your houses electric wiring, sadly i dont know much about electrics my vote would be to try a grounded plug with a surge protector?

No clue about api support, none of the AOSP based roms suport MHL, as it requires much of the samsungs frame and stuff, so sadly cm, miui, etc dont support MHL, not tried the leaked ICS yet, but i belive it should support MHL as its samsung's release.

Poor HDMI performance?

I bought a MHL to HDMI adapter and the first time using it, it worked pretty well. Every use after that has been terrible. Can't even watch a non-HD youtube video without the video being extremely choppy. Emulation is also pretty slow. Everything works good when not outputting to my TV. Is this some ROM/Kernel issue or the adapter or is this phone that weak? Anyone have any different experiences?
The slow performance may be from the hardware. The CPU or GPU may not be powerful enough to mirror a 1080p display. I had the same problem when I ran emulation on my Galaxy S2 using N64Oid and GenSoid the framerate would drop when connected to MHL.
Havnt tried on Galaxy Nexus though.
I been playing a handful of graphic intensive games while using the wiimote and haven't noticed any lag or choppyness, the phone did get really hit though. Im using latest Black Ice with the included kernel.

I think it is outputting to 720p. Everything runs perfect on the phone itself but the moment it's plugged in, it can't perform well at all.

That is the exact one I have. I ordered the one from Samsung and if any adapter should work it should be that considering the phone is made by Samsung. The reviews are good but I will come back and update this post once I have tried it out.
If your phone gets extremely hot this is where undervolting will make some difference and any kind of passive cooling will help also. I usually take my nexus out of my tpu and lay it perpendicular to the cavity side. And my phone will still charge slightly or not lose any using this method. And i havent had performance issues using snes9x or nes.emu. havent tested fpse though.

Anything to elevate it to give airflow. Just set your tpu down, ready like youre going to insert phone and set phone perpendicular on top. You should get a cross.

It should! Let me know if it doesn't because I do find it pretty weird that certain adapters cause different performance issues.
Problem isn't the adapter
I bought a Monotek MHL to HDMI and immediately had choppy video and audio from my GNex.
I brought it to work to test with the TV's here. I verified the output is 720p.
I also have a co-worker with a GNex, but he has a GSM version with jellybean running (4.1.x). Mine is a Verizon GNex with ICS (4.0.x).
My coworker's GNex worked flawlessly through the Monotek adapter. Mine still sucks.
Could it be the OS version on the phone? Can others verify what OS is running on their phone when it's choppy and when it's good?
Thanks.
Jelly Bean did the trick

Alrighty! Rooted my Verizon GNex to JB 4.1.1 and now the HDMI out is creamy smooth!
Problem was not with the Monotek connector, but with the OS. :good:
I wanted to report I bought a Skiva brand MHL to hdmi adapter and it works great. I did a lot of research before buying and it is the best out there. Over 4.5/5 stars on Amazon with over 100 reviews. Make sure you select sw decoding because since JB released HW doesn't do well. It's smooth and has almost 0 lag or choppyness.

Samsung EPL-3PHP HDTV Adapter

Just received EPL-3PHP HDMI adapter from Amazon UK (£23.00) and happy to confirm working with my GT-N8010 with latest UK JB 4.1.2
Is it possible to attach a BT trackball/keyboard without a dongle, or somehow use an other adapter I can attach (possible by a double adapter)
Once connected to my TV the only way to change any input is via the Note.

Hi Purchased from Amazon UK (seller was Amazon)http://http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0051D3KKI/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 actual price £23.55 but now looks like Amazon have suspended that item until they review a complaint, suggest you keep an eye on that link.
Surprised No has been able to answer my question regarding BT trackball!!!
If its a BT track ball I would think it will hook up just fine, same way a BT mouse would.
Just to let you know if you are in the UK with a HMV store nearby you can get these for £10. Picked up a couple last week.

Hi which one do you have, how do you connect it to the tablet, I assume its just Bluetooth no dongle, thanks.:good:
Simple the original one:
http://www.amazon.de/PlayStation-Du...HY/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1362585611&sr=8-10
bought it when it was on amazon for 35€ incl. shipping!!! nice deal i thought. I do connect it with the app "sixaxxis" (bluetooth). Requires root though, but pretty nice app. Now i can play all the games of my childhood: zelda (oot, n64), tekken (psx) without the need to install the damn ugly consoles in my living room .. thats just awesome!!
After installing the app I noticed that you can emulate a mouse. That is very useful to me for streaming movies from my server, look something up on imdb and so on with the hdmi adapter...
any more questions? ?

Thanks, not rooted, do not want to go in that direction, so am I correct in assuming you can only connect bt directly to tablet when you root it, otherwise I need a dongle??
So no way of having it connect to bt when using the hdmi adapter, bummer.
Question: Is the HDMI output lag-free, do the homescreens run smooth and is the image quality okay?
I just sent back the wireless allshare adapter because the streamed image has 15FPS when not buffered, the quality is worse than i expected and it ends every multitasking capability of the Note.

Well, keep in mind the ASCD won't mess with the resolution or color depth of the image displayed on the LCD, so if you see video quality issues (bad scaling or graininess or such) it's likely due to what your TV does with the not-quite 720P resolution of the signal from the Note 10.1 (1280x720 isn't a native resolution of most monitors and likely scales it to 1366x768), so I'm betting that the picture via the HDMI hard-wired cable will look the same (on static images) as did the picture from the ASCD.

New 2013 model of HDTV Adapter?
I'm shopping around for an HDTV Adapter for my GT-N8010 at the moment, and I've noticed that several online shops are advertising a new 2013 model - EPL-NPHPBKG.
e.g. - www dot amazon dot com /Original-Samsung-Genuine-EPL-NPHPBKG-EPL-3PHPBEG/dp/B00B8NJ6E4
They claim that it is the next verson of EPL-3PHPBEG (the model that this thread is about). Does anyone know what the difference is? The only thing I can see that might be an improvement is "Simultaneously charge your Galaxy Note 10.1 while streaming". I've seen reports on other threads about their tablet not charging while plugged in to the HDTV adapter. Can you confirm if this functionality exists on your EPL-3PHP?

Ah. See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2166540
Hi,
I dont know the id of my hdtv adapter but as far as i own it since the early days of my previous tab 10.1 (p7500) I am pretty sure it's the "old" one.
I can confirm the adapter is definetly charging my n8000 while connected to my tv behind the docking station (universal samsung), streaming .mkv from my ubuntu desktop / server machine and being controlley by emulated mouse with my ps3 gamepad (via sixaxxis).
Sure you won't win a speed challange with that configuration but the main point is it is charging. I guess about ~ 2..3 % / 0,5..1,0 h (never did a measurement ) but still charging. Thats pretty nice because sometimes when I come home from university and the battery is nearly empty (sometimes 2 days of usage with a single charge) I plug my note into the docking station, let it charge to 3 or 4 %, turn it on and start streaming. When I end the day and shut down the tv the note is at about ~10% and ready to get charged the whole night.

Looks good!
Update, just purchased apple Magic Trackpad looks like it works on my Tablet, No Dongle just Pin number input for connecting, so in theory I will be able to use it to control Note 10.1 whilst connected via HDMI adapter to TV, will confirm when it arrives this week.
Just received my EPL-3PHPBEG from Expansys. It was not the most expensive, but dirt cheap either. It works. It says it is for the Tab 10. The price on this seems to vary wildly with the cheaper ones (19-25$) all seeming to be out of stock, except today went back to Amazon and the Zeeestmm version now seems to be in stock and going for 29.00$
It works for my purpose - Powerpoint and other document projection. It does need to be powered, and the tab needs to be rebooted at least for the projector to recognize it. So it's working fine on my Tab Note 10.1.
What chaps me about Samsung, it the myriad of numbers and letters, all a bit different, but all seeming to be the same item. I thought it was bad with the phones and tabs, but it is beyond annoying with accessories.

Thanks for the reminder. Probably the image will look not better than before. However, it was not a difficult decision why i sent the Allshare Cast Hub back to amazon. For 60€ it's just to much for what it would have been for me. Ending all MultiWindow possibilities is probably the worst part. Well, with the HDMI cable i won't be able to connect USB anymore .. so everything has pros and cons. For what it offers, the wireless adapter was just too expensive and i was really annoyed that it was never remarked on ANY website i read that it ends multitasking features of the Note 10.1.

Slimport performance?

I am experiencing lag using slimport. I have an HDMI adapter for my Note 2, and it works great. With the Nexus, there is a slight lag even if you are using basic apps. Has anyone else ran into this issue?
Thanks!

I suggested the lag might be because the slimport adapter (according to reviews) is always sending HDCP (encrypted content) even for content that doesn't need to be copy protected.
I don't know for sure if that is the cause, but HDCP can introduce slight delays depending on the equipment.
Some people claim to use HDFury to strip the HDCP and use VGA input on their displays. I presume they feel HDFury can process HDCP faster than their TV can. However, if the issue is on the nexus or slimport adapter side, then HDFury really wouldn't help because the lag already happened.
I don't know if this is the case, just providing info for you to look into.
I suppose one could buy the VGA slimport adapter and test that theory out as VGA doesn't have HDCP.
BTW does anyone know how the always-on HDCP protection is working on these slimport adapters?
Is it
N7(HDCP1)---->(HDCP1)SlimPort(HDCP2)---->(HDCP2)TV
where HDCP1 and HDCP2 are 2 separate encryption/decryption cycles.
or is it
N7(HDCP1)---->(HDCP1)SlimPort(HDCP1)---->(HDCP1)TV
Where HDCP1 is more of a pass-through across the slimport adapter.
I looked at the specs for the slimport transmitter and receiver chips here:
http://www.analogix.com/pdf/ANX7805_PB.pdf
http://www.analogix.com/pdf/ANX7730_PB.pdf
and it seems both transmitter and receiver have HDCP capabilities, so it seems like the first option is a possibility.
Just got my slimport, it works great for games with almost no lag. I noticed the home screens are the only source of minor lag

I would like to know which Slimport adapter you are using and also your HDMI cable. I just received my analogical Slimport adapter and there is definitely a lag when playing games. Works fine for viewing videos showing pictures, but I have a logitech revue that I can use for that.
I Tried to play some SNES games and the lag made them almost unplayable. Killer instinct and super Mario world were the games I tried. I really hope it's my HDMI cable, but since it works fine with my PS3, then I think it might be the slimport adapter. If that's the case, it really sucks that I wasted $30.

So it appears the TV you use plays a factor. I was originally testing the Slimport adapter with my 32 Inch Phillips LCD TV, model # 32PFL3504D/F7. I went to my bed room and plugged it into my Walmart brand 26 inch ILO TV and to my surprise, I was a able to initiate combos on Killer Instinct with no lag at all.
Not only was it an older seemingly lower grade TV, I was using the lowest grade HDMI cable I had, one I paid $2 for on Amazon. So I took the cable from the ILO TV and went back to the living room to test it with the Philips TV. It produced the same crappy results as my other two High quality HDMI cables.
What I did notice though, is that it wasn't a lag from the nexus 7 2nd gen to the TV but a complete tablet lag. Everything was delayed by a half a second even while looking at the tablet vs looking at the TV. I have no idea why but I have no lag on one TV using my ps3 controller wireless and I have noticeable lag using the same set up on another TV. Also the lag shows on the tablet as well...
Guess it's time for a new living room TV. I wanted to get a bigger screen TV anyway but couldn't justify a reason. Could you tell me what TV you are using?

Thanks man. I was definitely thinking Samsung since they are the leader in electronics right now. I wonder if best buy will allow me to plug my Nexus seven in via slimport adapter to test HDMI performance?

Question about hooking up to my TV via hdmi and not getting full screen.

Has anyone found a way to hook up their tablet to their TV with full display? I bought an hdmi adapter but it has a black bar on each side not covering the whole TV display. My note 10.1 2013 version didn't have this problem.
I have the same issue and haven't found a solution so far. What makes it worse, it defaults to a 1080i 24hz signal which is very noticeably laggy especially when gaming. And the colors are bad. Makes no sense, the note 10.1 should have 0 issue pushing 1080p/60hz when it does usually alot more than that.
what we need is hdmi options. I also want to be able to turn off the screen of my tablet when it's outputting to the TV.
Exactly!!! I even bought an hdmi cable that plugs into power and it's not charging the tablet at all. I also would love if you could shut the tablet off while doing so. Do you think the samsumg all cast wirele hub is the answer? For now anyway? Correct me if im wrong but doesnt it fix all problems were discussing except the "covering the whole screen" part? Well and slight lag... man this sucks... how is this tablet not as supported as the 1st generation one? Lame...

I did some testing today and it really grinds my gears... I have a 3rd party adapter 5 in 1 (hdmi, usb, sd card, micro sd, micro usb) standard 5 pin mhl and an adapter for 11 pin mhl.
-my wife's galaxy s2 works perfectly with the 5 pin. Outputs full 1080p / 60hz smooth and responsive.
-My sgs3 doesn't work at all with the adapter (4.3 stock), it starts charging but there is no image on the screen.
-my note 10.1 2014 works but it outputs 1080p / 24hz and it has a really bad delay that makes it impossible to play games, and of course 24 fps is laggy as ****. And of course it has black boarders on the side.
I can't believe that there isn't a settings menu for hdmi. Even my old transformer tf201 had one. And you get the best experience with the 4 year old sgs2(running 4.2). Unbelievable.

Its extremely frustrating... I don't know if it will ever get fixed... That's one of the main uses for my tablet too.

I've never used a physical adapter so can't really draw one. AllShare Cast works really well on the N10.1-14, a lot faster than my old N10.1-12. Video apps that were barely usable on the '12 are no problem on the '14. I'm not a big gamer so perhaps someone who is and uses AllShare Cast can comment.

Thanks for the info. Does it cover your whole TV screen? I can't really tell in the pics. I don't game on my tablet trying to look at a TV lol I personally think that's kinda dumb. I have a ps3 and games on my tablet that I just play on my tablet.

The TV's got a black frame so it's hard to see. I'd say the picture being mirrored is 100% with some small bars on the sides that are necessary to adjust 16:10 to 16:9. I've noticed nothing distorted in any of the apps/content I've viewed.
PS3
Here's another question, I just hooked my tablet up to my ps3 via bluetooth and it will allow me to share video, pic's, and music. But I have some videos downloaded and put them in that folder where the ps3 is looking for them. I rebooted and the ps3 still does not see the video. its an mp4 so Im not sure if I need to convert it to a different format or what. Anyone have any insight on that? Im still new to the ps3 as I just got it a few months back.
I'm not prepared to pay for another 70-80$ device (that's what allshare costs where i live) to get a good image... This tablet is a highly advanced device and i expect hdmi out to work. As I said it works very well on the 4 year old sgs2 why would it work worse on a 2014 device?

I agree that's a lot more money for something other cheaper devices already do. You go on a still keep your tablet?

EDIT: Never mind. I got it all to work. So I guess thats my work around for now. Im just going to use my ps3 to view the videos I want. Not the ideal solution but it beats spending more money! Hopefully something gets figured out in the mean time. I shouldn't have to rely on a ps3 for this type of thing on such an awesome device.
