[Q] Rooting for Tethering - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Sprint EVO that I want to be able to tether to my Samsung Tablet. My question is, can I "just" root the phone and use an app from the market to tether?
I am not interested at this time downloading and using new ROMS, as I do not have the time right now to experiment with different ROMS.
I just want to keep my current stock ROM, but be able to tether.
Also, Does any one have experience with unrevoked and other similar programs to root? Again, I am going for ease and time!
Thanks~! All suggestions, comments, and ideas welcome!!

You can just root the phone. Also the root method you use will be determined by your firmware and android version. If your on 2.2 unrevoked is your option to root. If your on 2.3 revolutionary.io is your root method. If your 2.3.5 HTCdev.com is your root method

There was an APP called opengarden that you could do wifi tether, but I don't see it in the market anymore, and that could be that it doesn't work with GB I don't think.

All rooting methods are ez to do. Use an app called "wireless tether 2.0.7" which can be found on google.

Wireless tether for root users is the easiest and is a free app. It's no longer available in the market, you can download it at http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Good luck!

Same thing i just said -_-

Wireless tether is still there, it's just that all the carriers block it from showing up (silly carriers). If you can find a device it'll install on, you should be able to pull the apk and install it on the other one.

You can google it and dl the apk ftom phone browser and install. Have to have unknown sources box checked.

[Q] Native Tethering for Rooted Users

Forgive me if there is already an answer to this on the forum. I did some searching and didn't see one. Basically, I am wondering if any of the custom ROMS available for the EVO unlock the native wifi tethering that is part of froyo. I am running the rooted version of the 2.2 update, but the feature is hidden. It seems like if it is part of the OS, it should be able to be unlocked and included in the custom ROMS. Would be greatfull for anyone who can point me in the right direction on this as I don't want to have to use the wifi tether app if I don't have too.
Thanks,
Justin
CM6 does that. You will lose Sense though.
I was looking into that one. I am ok with looking sense, but I don't want to loose 4g. Does C6 have working 4g yet?

Tethering is working on the latest rom from Fresh if you run Netarchy's kernel.
am i missing something or why not just use wifi tether?
does that not hit 4g? if it does, why not just use that and keep sense? (not that sense is all that wonderful)
At the time of this post, WiFi tether app was not working with froyo. It is now, but its performance isn't that great.

Root question

I am new to the rooting incredible scene. Came over from the vogue/android scene. I would like to know if I can root just to remove bloat and add wifi tether, then set my phone back to the state where it will automatically receive OTA updates (even if that adds bloat back in until I re-root). I am trying to keep my inc as stock as possible, but would really like to clean some of the sh*t off, and would like to have true wifi tether hotspot. TIA.
Let me clarify. I want to have my phone as close to stock (verizon sense stock), without the bloat apps, adding wifi tether, but be able to receive VZW updates OTA without issue when they come out.
Closest I can think of is Virtuous.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765447
It is stock sense with bloat removed and other enhancements.
As for getting an OTA, you have to be on the stock recovery. But Virtuous updates the Rom on the latest OTA anyway.

Also wireless tether for root users can be found on the market or the latest version is always here:

What are the cons of the Virtuous ROM? Is there anything not working? I am used to something not working coming from the Vogue scene.
All of it works great - that is the ROM you want for the setup you described.

Is it easy enough to return to stock (vzw returnable)?
Pretty easy really.

USB Tether for Rooted EVO

Hi,
What is the best way to USB tether my rooted EVO? I would like to tether to my PC which doesn't have wireless.
A free app would be best and I need access to secure sites.
Thanks!
I believe nearly all roms now have that native feature of the phone unlocked. You shouldn't need a third party app to do it. What rom are you running?
If you do want to use an app, you could try Easy Tether or PDAnet. I don't think either are free for the full version though.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I'm running the stock ROM... I couldn't decide on which one to use. I guess its time for me to pick one.
Thanks!
Does this ROM have USB tether: VirusROM Kingdom REVOlution?
I couldn't see a list of all the apps included.
thanks!
you could try this:
code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/
if the rom you have doesn't have the usb tether functional.

Any ROM Manager Love?

I successfully rooted my A100 a few days after buying it.
Without ROM Manager installed, rooting is almost useless to me.
I want to at least be able to do a Nandroid backup.
Anyone have any success getting Rom Manager and Clockwork Recovery on their A100? If so, how?
Thanks!
+1 from me. I'd love to see a recovery of some sort with nandroid.
I am just waiting
Don't get the wrong idea, but I've been hoping to get this tab for Christmas. I've been trying to get familiar with android on my Linux computer and hopefully once I get my tab I can build a recovery. Not making any promises though!

just the fact that you're willing to try is great news.
To the OP, three good reasons to root: AdFree, Titanium Backup, and enabling ad-hoc connections on your Wi-Fi.
If one of you guys want a recovery THAT bad, here is a website that could either teach you to make your own recovery or you could send the tablet to him to make a recovery and he'll send it back. Go here. Thanks to BobZHome for providing the link.
Does anyone know if this device have a locked / encrypted bootloader? I might be able to port cwm to it but if the bootloader is locked I dont think it'll work unless someone finds some way to unlock/decrypt it.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Nevermind, answered my own question and the bootloader looks like a pain to crack! This wont be something an average developer could just compile, its not as simple as just looking at a set of build instructions and making it work like shown on koushes site you linked. Someone (smarter than me) will have to figure out how the a100 bootloader works and build a custom recovery based on their findings.
An example of this is the a500 recovery where they are using a custom script to generate an md5 descriptor for the boot image. Like someone said in another thread even the new a500 bootloader that comes with their 3.2 update hasnt been cracked yet.

Can you overclock and underclock this tab? And also can wireless tether from my phone work on this? Or is there a special thing you have to do in order for it to work? I would like to use it anywhere I went...
I haven't messed around with ad hoc stuff, but I can tell you we can't OC until we have an OC kernel.

No OC/UV yet, but as far as wifi tether from phones, I use "Open Garden Wifi Tether" on my rooted thunderbolt to provide internet to my tablet, and my PC at home, even at the same time. You can find it free on the market. Only for rooted phones though. I use my dad's evo shift on occasion when he gets better signal than me, and his is not rooted, using the stock mobile hotspot app.
Oh, and my A100 is not rooted, so you should be able to use it anywhere.

How do you create profiles???
You need to be rooted and install setcpu, you can't over clock but you can under clock and set profiles which will let you save battery while doing things like listening to music and reading ebooks.

Request: Sprint Hotspot hack or hacked app

I haven't found any evidence that this has been done yet, so I was wondering if someone would be able to either tell us how to hack the stock Sprint Hotspot app or upload a pre-hacked app for us to download.
I'm willing to try ideas out to see if they work, so let me know if you have suggestions!
The hotspot app is built into the framework. So it would take some editing. Are doubting to use kies?
Use wireless tether for root, it's in the market.

Wireless tether may or may not work from the market, wouldn't work for me. If it doesn't try this link: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta14.apk This 1 worked for me the 1st time. ROOT is required of course.
Q. How do I use the WiFi Tether app?
Download from the store or see above link....
1. Open the Wifi Tether App
2. Press Menu
3. Press Settings
4. Choose "Change Device-Profile"
5. Choose "Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE)"
6. Press Back twice to return to initial app screen
7. Press the big ole WiFi Signal icon
8. Allow Superuser Permissions
Profit! :highfive::highfive::highfive:
I should have clarified in the first post, but I was hoping to get the stock app hacked to work for tethering (wired and wireless). I'm familiar with WiFi Tether and I'm sure I could get that working (thankfully!), but I prefer the stock app. From my experience with the stock app on the Evo 3D, One S, and Evo 4G LTE, it's a lot faster and more reliable than third-party apps.
I'm not even sure what kies is yet, so I'm not using it, no. I think it's some sort of data/calendar sync service.

Htc handles the 3rd party apps a little differently than Samsung. For instance Foxfi which did not need root at all would not work properly with HTC phones unless rooted. I know you may want to use the stock one but at the end of the day you still pressing a button and I have been using wifi tether and it works flawlessly and actually to me was faster than stock. I have owned and Evo Evo3D, Epic Touch Galaxy S2(Tmobile) Galaxy S3(Sprint). Must say that wireless tether app has held me down on more than one occasion.
Don't hurt to request it though but I am quite sure whether you asked or not someone is and has been working on it.

I always thought it was the same 1 from the market until I installed it and it wouldn't for the life of me allow SU. I uninstalled it, installed the one from Google code and it worked perfectly the 1st time.
With wireless tether change profile to galaxy nexus gsm not cdma and you must use access control.
Have you tried the following:

Question??
So... we don't have a stock hotspot hack yet except for CM10??
If you are running stock rooted this is worth giving a shot. Its a nandroid of a stock cspire rom. Same ROM with the exception of a few sprint apps missing. Fully functional stock tether if your on sprint http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32460393&postcount=21 think it runs better too. Just throwin it out there
Will this work with the Sprint Galaxy SPH-L710? Can it just be flashed over the existing ROM?
