Samsung Galaxy S Glide AKA Samsung Captivate Glide question?? - Samsung Captivate Glide

How come the phone specifications at rogers say no for Video Calling, Digital TTY/TDD, TeleNav, Wi-FI Calling and MobileMail?
But at ATT it says its TTY/TTD compatible and has video calling are the phones the same? or different models completely? I also noticed the battery time is completely different... and is there apps that can enable all the missing Specifications?

Sometimes Providers only list what they choose to support but these lists are bogus. I have the Rogers Glide and I can tell you I have used video conferencing on many different apps from Skype to Tango and I think once with Fring (Someone called me and I answered, I think it was fring had it open in the background). They work great and depending on your reception can look rather good to really choppy. As for battery life depends on what you have installed that is eating up battery life in the background. Unfortunately I do not know if I believe that android uses the apps in an efficient manner as most people say. I just say if there is an app that you have not used in 1 week uninstall it. Android remembers your settings when you reinstall it. THis way it will not use any power for sure. Just use a backup program like Astro file manager to backup your APK's on your external SD card and reinstall the app when you wish to use it. Installs take only seconds!!

[Q] newbie looking for advide

Hi folks,
I am going to buy my very first smart phone. I am currently debating between iPhone 4 and Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S (in Canada) Without going into the question og whether I need to get a data plan or not, I have some very specific questions that I would appreciate your words of wisdome on:
1: Is there a free third party GPS app that does not consume data while on the road (i.e. direct satellite connection). Would a paid app such as CoPilot Live 8 still be not good enough because Samsung GPS has reliability issues?
2: Does Google Maps continuously consume data while showing you your route on the road or does it just downlaod the map once and then simply use the gps-satellite channel? I need a good gps system on the phone so that I can have the phone in my backpack and follow the directions via my motorcycle's blue tooth enabled helmet.
3: Does Samsung Galaxy S have capability of turning speech into a text SMS?
4: Is there an alternative to the dreaded Kies for Samsung?
5: From being a complete noob up until a week ago to words like jailbreak, rooting, froyo, etc, I have come a long way and have explored several options. So wondering rooting is even necessary and it it is, is there a Cydia like application for Android. iPhone users use Cydia primarily for installing pirated software such as TomTom.
6: Can I turn off data consumption and use wifi and still receive calls?
Thanks in advance

Copilot is available for Android too, but in my opinion, Travroute suck. There are plenty of alternatives, but depends on your country. We aren't really too sure how good navigation is on the final froyo either, but car navigation should be fine. Worst comes to worst, you can get a bluetooth GPS.

There are some that read off the directions.. Depends on the app.

There are apparently a few, but maybe best to give it a try yourself at a store, to see what results are like. Speech recognition has a habit of being slightly "meh". With VOIP though, in some countries, short phone calls cost cheaper on VOIP/skype than an SMS though.

For flashing, there is heimdell and odin. Contacts sync with google contacts anyway. You can set the phone too mass transfer mode to expose it as files in normal file browsing tools to copy data/music.

We don't need jailbreaking really because Android is open, whereas Apple screws developers around with restructions. And you can root if you want to, but you only need to do so if you are messing with low level OS stuff.
And unlike iOS, anyone can open an app store for Android, because Apple restricts apps which can be install.

Use Wifi to receive calls? For voice calls, you simply hold the power button, and there is an option to turn off 3G data/HSDPA. Haven't tested it properly, but pretty sure it works the way you want (maybe check the manual). VOIP apps exists too, like Skype and Sipdroid (and in late firmware's, they actually work properly).
Other considerations are:
1) The iPhones are MUCH more restrictive for developers. Apple will tell you they are the most consumer friendly company on the planet, but the harsh reality is, they REALLY aren't.
2) Android is far more customisable than iOS.
3)If you own an iPhone, you should assume you need to use iTunes (say goodbye to flac support, and many other things).
4) You buy from the Android store, I think the purchased apps should also work on any other future compatible android phone. If you buy on the iPhone store, they will only work on future Apple devices.
5) Some people will tell you the iPhone doesn't lag, etc. I tested an iPhone 4G the other day, and this is DEFINITELY untrue.
6) Steve jobs is no better than most politicians. He does consistently deceive people and blatantly lie during announcements. For iinstance, at first he tried to claim there was no antenna issue (and it was simply shonky software), despite antenna experts PROVING there was. The iPhone succeeded solely because people were sucked in by Steve Job's exageration of multi-touch. The first iPhone couldn't even run third party apps.
7) Android is growing quickly. The app store now has over 100,000 apps. Whilst there are less apps than Apple's platform, you'll find that all the good ones seems to be there.
Anyway, my opinion is that consumers should avoid the iPhones.. Another phone you may wish to consider though is the new HTC desire HD.
thanks for your very very detailed reply. Much appreciated. I am still confused about the GPS stuff. Hopefully other people will pitch in as well. I should have phrased my question about turning off data better than I did.
What I'd meant was whether I can turn off 3G so that I don't use internet data while using a GPS app such as CoPilot but would doing so prevent me from receiving/making calls?
Thanks,

Is anyone juggling both Android and WP7?

I'm asking since I'm gonna be picking up a Dell Venue Pro (again) I been using Android for a while and I enjoy it. The thing I love the most is the integration with gmail and calendars. Being able to open my calendar on my Macbook and for it to automatically update my calendar on my Droid Pro is convenient. From what I remember, WP7 should sync up the calendar with your gmail account but I'm wondering if theres anyone out there that is able to balance using both phones? For example, I want to be able to write down notes on one phone and for somehow that carry over to my Dell Venue Pro. There was a program called AK Notepad for Android and whatever notes I'd write down on my Droid Pro, I'd be able to access on my Nexus One.
I still carry around my Nexus One without SIM...just because Android allows me to do many things I still cannot with my Optimus 7... so for now, at least until Mango update, I will be carrying two phones.
I have several android devices to play with but still carry my surround as my every day phone. I like both. As to having full cloud based sharing on multiple platforms? I don't think they play that nice quite yet

Apparently Evernote (http://www.evernote.com/) is almost ready for Windows Phone 7, which should allow you to create/access notes on pretty much every platform out there.
Try using cloud based apps. It's pretty easy between iPhone and Android, or Android and Android.
It's not that easy with WP7 because we don't have too many apps right now. Looking forward to it!
Juggling between a samsung focus and hopefully in a few hours a galaxy s2. Until mango, the galaxy s2 will be my main phone tho
I have both.
Actually the fact that many users use both speaks for itself....
Anyway I have both of them and ditched WP7 because carrying two devices to do the same thing is kinda nonsense.
There's nothing WP7 does Android can't do
However there are tons of things Android does while WP7 just can't.
WP7 may be very appealing in some scenarios.
Just write your notes in the gmail calendar and sync it on both devices, that's what I do, works like a charm.

That's actually so simple.
Plus on Android you can send to calendar notes from Note Everything
I also have my wildfire without sim and my htc trophy. I don't now if i will keep the trophy. I am giving it some time to convince me. I am carrying 2 phones for now. One of the most annoying things in windows phone 7 is that the wifi sleeps when the screen is off, so nothing that syncs (gmail, gtalk, calendar, etc)...syncs! Microsoft says its "by design", well i don't like it. Maybe after the Mango update.

I'm not a big wifi user but the same thing happens with bluetooth and it's so disgustingly annoying!! I will be streaming music to my car radio using bluetooth and when a song ends while the screen is off, the phone will automatically disconnect the bluetooth connection and I have to go back to settings and reconnect it and why is bluetooth always searching and discoverable??? What, they couldn't add another slider to switch discovery mode on and off so I don't have to see 50 headsets on my list??
I'm not a power user so i don't need all the fancy stuff Android can do. WP7 is great for me as I mainly use exchange and office, but it's the stupid little details that get you frustrated!

OneNote Exists for WP7 and you can view it in a browser. EverNote has too many restrictions for how much data you can transfer, and it requires yet another account creation (ugh!).
Android phones usually come with a memo app (my Vibrant has it), and they typically allow you to send notes via SMS/MMS, Email, etc.
I carry both an HD7 and a Vibrant with Active SIMs in them everywhere. I put my Unlimited Data SIM in my HD7 when I got it because of Zune Pass, but I'm about to switch it back to my Vibrant.
Audio Quality on the Vibrant is 200% better than on the HD7. You basically need headsets with the HD7. The Vibrant's sound can fill a decent sized room. Call and Speaker Phone quality ... the comparison is the same. Vibrant is wildly superior. It's like comparing a surround sound system to a pocket radio...
The HD7 is useless as a phone comapred to the Vibrant. The signal is consistently 2 bars lower and call quality is more volatile. I feel like I'm in the middle of New York on an AT&T iPhone 4 when I'm on the HD7. The Vibrant performs flawlessly.
The HD7 is only useful as a PMP IF you have a decent pair of headsets or a BT Jabra device with FM transmitter in your car (like I do).
The terrible speaker and cell radio in this thing is already enough to relegate it to backup status, but there is the issue of Apps and Services integration.
Android has better apps. After heavy use of both phones. The Android versions perform better and are more stable as well. Twitter for WP7 (even Birdsong) and Twitter for Android... the Android version runs circles around it. Same for Facebook. LinkedIn doesn't exist for WP7.
No decent IM Applications. Half-baked MMS. Can't send Videos off the device via MMS or Email.
A phone can be made better (maybe the DVP has better speakers than the HD7, and a better radio with better data speeds and call quality), but the OS is half-baked and puts way too many limitations on what you, or any app can do. This means there is a definite roadblock IRT functionality that anyone can hit on WP7 that isn't possible on some other platforms.
In addition to that, there are a ton of applications that are missing from the market, and those that are coming (that matter) won't be here for another 6 months or so.
If I was "upgrading" from a dumb/feature phone it probably wouldn't be an issue. But coming from WM/Android/WebOS and having used iPhones more than enough... It's unacceptable as a daily driver.
It has all the detriments of an AT&T iPhone in New York (poor reception/call quality/wildly flunctuating signal strength that never goes above 3 bars even standing under a 3G tower) with none of the benefits (High Quality Apps, Services Integration, Top Apps). In addition to that, the Audio Quality makes it hit and miss even as a ZuneHD replacement, and the Codec Support is just not cute compared to something like a Galaxy S device. There is no DLNA capability, either. Battery Life is not better than an iOS/Android device, so that's not an advantage.
Disclaimer: Some of these issues (in particular the reception/call quality problems) may be an issue with the phone and not the OS itself - but T-Mobile only sells one WP7 device in carrier stores so take that for what it's worth. One other person I know has an HD7 and when I asked him how he likes it he responded (I'm quoting him word for work...) "The call quality is ****, but it's okay I guess." So I'm pretty sure it's not due to having a lemon device

I don't use BT much but I understand the frustration, however the entire platform has been launched under the premise that it's not static or even completed as far as I understand. And given the track record of how MS usually deliver products (a main product and then many "hotfixes" and service packs) I expect most of these small things will be fixed in time.
Still annoying that they manage to miss such apparent things.

Android does this as well, that's why some applications (like Trillian for Andorid) have a setting to keep WiFi on when the phone sleeps.
I actually prefer it that way. If the phone is charging the WiFi stays on, however. They do it to conserve battery life, and that was a good decision...

Well atleast the option is there unlike in Microfot's product.
BTW, in the areas where you might have a weak cellular data signal havung your phone connected to a Wi-Fi access point is morr power efficient netting better battery life.
Kind of surprised at the number of people with dual phones. I have a Surround and an Inspire 4G. Before I upgraded to Gingerbread, the Inspire 4G was just so damned choppy, I couldn't really use it for long before I was ready to throw it. Now, it is my primary phone. My Surround has so-so build quality and much more limited functionality. I certainly wish for turn-by-turn directions via Bing maps. NoDo has made it much more fun to use as a communication tool with C&P, and it's smooth as can be. If my work would get the Exchange server up and running instead of using a third party host, I could see it being my primary phone. Until then, its all Android.

with an HD7 that would be everywhere, becuase the radio is so terrible it can never go above 3 bars even if I'm standing under an HSPA+ radio. My Vibrant's radio is 100% better.
I cannot use the HD7 as a phone, it's just too terrible. I only use it to play music these days and after I ETF one of these lines in a month or two I'll probably think hard about getting rid of it - probably just enough to cover the ETF fee, of a bit less than that...

[Q] [?] Total noob needs help

Hi,
I am what you might call a total Apple zombie, in fact I never had any other SmartPhone but an iPhone since '07. Due to the huge disappointment with the 4S, I was finally fed up and switched to the Galaxy Nexus. However, while this seems to be a cool developer phone, I have huge issues with using it in a productive environment. But that is probably just due to my own ignorance ...
[Backup&Restore]
Poor me is hit with an update notification like 50 times a day. I suspect that I will lose all data when I hit install so I am quite hesitant here. With my iPhone I did not even had to bother with stuff like that, it synced with iTunes over WIFi whenever I was in one my home networks. The Nexus does not seem to offer such functionality.
What I expect to be backup'ed is all:
of my mail (around 4GByte) that I frequently need to have available offline
my Navigation system and maps (Sygic + Navigon atm)
my music would be nice due to reasons I elaborate on later
SMS, phone records, etc ...
I tried the following means for backups already:
ADB: with command line "adb backup -apk -shared -all -f ./backup_all.ab" --> result was only 700MByte so I won't trust it a bit (my data is around 13GByte)
Titanium Backup: told me all worked fine but my phone has not enough free space for saving the backup to the pseudo-SD, the file is corrupted, and dropbox is rejecting the maps and my email account data (looks like they are bigger than 400MByte or something ...)
Google Sync: is missing all that des not have a google stamp on it
[EDIT] Noting is worse but to switch on Navigation and get the message that the map was not downloaded and to reload 400-800MByte of maps over a roaming 3G connection at the airport or use a super slow paid airport WiFi. Same goes for my e-Mail, I need it searchable and accessible.
What are the pro's suggesting here? I only have around 3GBytes of disk space available on my phone, the cloud services does not like big files, and the ADB backup seems to lack some stuff (though I cannot really tell what it is leaving out).
[Navigation]
I am abroad very often and do not like to pay insane roaming fees for online navigation systems. That is why I acquired two products, Navigon and Sygic since Navigon Europe is crashing right away.
I am used to the iPhone 4, which means: load App, set destination, boom, go ... My Nexus however, needs a warm-up of around 15 minutes and then constantly loses its signal. Furthermore the screen is not always auto-rotating so that I go in the wrong direction from time to time. Am I just too stupid to operate such things?
[Music Sync]
As I said, I am used to iTunes and all is synced automatically. With the nexus I tried Google music but it is not originally available in my country and it cannot find any management software apart from sync. The Music webpage does not let me logon since a couple of weeks now but the Music Manager works on Windows and uploads some of my files. However, how do I add or delete new songs? Am I stuck to add the to iTunes, import them by Music Manager, and wait for an upload?
I also tried Winamp sync but it crashes whenever I want to sync by WiFi and my Mac is not seeing the device sometimes.
[Car Mode]
Both of my cars support the iPhone by cable and BT. I usually use the cable mode because the phone needs to be charged anyway. My cars are playing the music right away and I can use the steering wheel controls to skip tracks, etc. With my Nexus all I see is "cannot play". When I use Aux-In, which sucks btw., I have no knowledge of any way to make the buttons bigger etc. I needs some filigrane fingers to operate that thing when on the go. The Google car App does not want to install itself because it seems to be incompatible with the nexus ...
How can a fit-finger syndrome person like me control their phone in a car?
[Network Access]
Whenever I am in highly shielded environments (that happens often), such as a underground parking garage, a hospital white room (MRT, CT, etc.) or in a research center with much electromagnetic interference, my Nexus is losing its GSM network access and this is okay. However, it does not gets it back when I am out again when I am not switch the phone off and on again! I have already had overflowing mailboxes so often that I have a habit now to restart my phone whenever I am outside again. That is ridiculous! Is that a hardware problem of the phone or do I just have a bad model?
I hope you could enlighten me, as I am totally ignorant concerning Android and their phones. They are indeed a world on their own! Please keep in mind that I am not very knowledgeable so I would appreciate human-understandable information

OTA 4.0.2, it is rooted for the Titanium Backup, stock ROM and kernel (4.0.1, KK1-Baseband, 3.0.1 Kernel), no other tweaks I am aware of.
An OTA update doesn't erase anything..

I'm in a similar kind of position and I think that provided you have standard recovery the update will work fine and you'll lose no settings although I've seen some suggestions you'll lose root by updating. Not sure how it would affect you if you have a non-standard kernel tho...

Having root doesn't mean anything. As long as you didn't do any changes to the kernel, or anything outside of /sdcard/ even though you have root. You'll be fine, it won't wipe anything. Just accept the OTA and everything will be okay.
I'd recommend using https://market.android.com/details?...m9yZy5wcm9qZWN0dm9vZG9vLm90YXJvb3RrZWVwZXIiXQ.. as it will keep your root access post-OTA.
@daz.g: Not having the stock kernel provided by Google and accepting the OTA is a huge-nono and will most likely fail. You can keep root with the app I linked above. But using stock ROM + stock kernel + root, your options are rather limited and it's better off going off with Custom ROMs. If people are going to be risky and root, might as well go all the way. Risking and flashing ROMs aren't even that scary

[Q] How to delete Sprint phone from EVO 4G

Hi, all
I have a Sprint HTC EVO 4G that is not activated on Sprint and never will be.
It is rooted.
I want to removed all the Sprint Phone related software, including all "phone only" related software.
So when it boots you don't see the option option to open the Sprint dialer, etc
Right down to the phone's radio (CDMA) device drives (or unmount them), if possible.
It will become basically a wifi only mini-tablet to run apps, surf the net, use google voice and email etc.
This is my first post so please excuse me if I missed required info.
Thanks

You can delete or freeze any Sprint Phone related apps via root explorer or titanium backup etc. But they will be called from the framework-res.apk forever like a zombie. That will drain battery and RAM.
I recommend searching for ROMs which don't include Sprint apps. Maybe AOSP ROMs will do fine.

Xperia ION 40 hours of battery life

My Xperia ION AT&T lasts for about 38-40 hours on WCDMA only and constantly active 2 sip accounts through Csipsimple (on WIFI and WCDMA), plenty of sip and gsm phone calls and internet usage. I am on T-Mobile and have all LT28i bands including T-Mobile's 1700 band and LTE.
Here is what worked for me:
First of all, I flashed generic deodexed 6.1.E.3.7 firmware, which is available on this forum. This took care of AT&T bloat. What I also discovered was that in AT&T firmware radio signal is weak. As such, when I went to *#*#4636#*#* and into phone information, I noticed that the signal was jumping all the time from HSPU to UMTS. That wastes a lot of battery power.. Second of all, I got rid of Google and some Xperia own bloat. I uninstalled or disabled (using Root Uninstaller) the following applications:
About PlayStation; All wallpapers I don't use; Android Live Wallpapers, Google back-up restore, Bluetooth Share, stock browser, bubbles, calendar storage, chrome browser (I recommend Dolphin--fastest and less battery consuming), com.android.providers.parterbookmarks, com.android.sharedstoragebackup, com.sonyericsson.appshare, com.sonyericsson.newsoftwarecheck, com.sonyericsson.warrantytime, connected devices, content sharing, cosmic flow, crashmonitor, devicemonitor, download music info, drm protected content storage, drmdialogs, stock email (kaiten mail is much better and has open gpg), enchanted forest, event stream engine, face unlock, all facebooks, friends music, gmail, google account manager, google backup transport, google services framework (you can still have access to google similar to that on a regular computer), hdmi (can enable if need to), help, learning client, mono, movies, musicFX, my uploads, network location (still have access to internet), neoreader, news&weather, nfc service (can enable if need to), notes (instead I use NoteCipher), OMA clients and services, play now, poBox Touch, protectedMedia Scanner, QC SEMC Service, R2R client, RRetail Demo, remote control service,
smart search, sony select, google play (I use Aptoid), Sound recorder (can enable if needed, otherwise, I don't want google to listen on my surroundings), swiqimasterreset, tags, talk, all timescapes, twitter and tv launcher, update center, bunch of verifycertificates dummy apps, wisepilot, and all google applications such as maps, earth and others. I use Sygic as main navigation. It is second to none in my view.
I also use LBGuard with phone ID availability disabled for all applications including system ones. As far as positioning, only Sygic is allowed to use it (prompt to allow only), I have a tight leash on all applications as far as internet access. Only Sip client, Skype, Dolphin and Aptoid (only when I use it) are allowed to access internet. I use adaway with Dolphin. It works like a charm. Even adaway is not allowed automatic updating (I do it manually once a month). LBGuard is also not allowed to access the internet (why?). I also use Total Screen Control with brightness set at 60% (it is enough for indoor lighting). I put a small widget on all screens, which allows to disable the setting in bright light.
And the result speaks for itself. Here is a screenshot attached.
Again, I have 2 sip accounts active all the time, plenty of sip and a little voice talk. I can access internet and everything that is available for a PC... It works for me.

You can't calculate this way.. Plus it's charged twice in this 16 hrs.. So no ways 40 hours.. Useless thread..
Edit : My bad, but charged thrice

Agreed with Harsh. And most importantly you should've posted this in the battery life thread which is existed in general section already. Nothing new here, so creating another thread about battery life is not helping.
And since the screen shot is showing 3 times of charging, so there's no point it it.

I clearly posted a wrong picture. I apologize for that. I am doing a fresh test and will post a new picture in about 24 hours.
The point of the thread, though, is about bloat applications from AT&T and Google, which waste battery, have very limited benefit to the user and hugely intrude on user's privacy. BTW, you don't work for Google? Do you?

Here is a new screen shot. It shows that 10 hours and 25 minutes took about 28% out of the battery. And keep in mind I could get more hours if I disable my 2 sip accounts. Also keep in mind that I am on WCDMA only, which eats more battery than GSM signal.
See, I was right you were affiliated with Google. I kind of figured out that you were a bit offended by the idea that 80% of Android is actually nothing more than malware/spam/tracking/spying. Best to you and your brother. I didn't mean to offend any person. However, in my opinion, Android, as it comes out of the box, is a deeply flowed operating system solely due to the fact that it is developed by Google. Also, about bloat: when people talk about bloat in the context of smart phones, they mean operator branding. I am talking about Google bloat, which is larger than all operators' bloat taken together. It is larger and more dangerous, because this garbage is embedded in the system. That is my view, which is by the way, shared by quite a few...
