[Q] Chrome Beta - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Chrome Beta is released for ICS. I just downloaded from the market. Any pro and cons compared to the default browser?

Pros
Faster than default browser
Nice transitions
Easy tab management
Cons
No Arabic/Hebrew support (awkward)
no flash
Pretty much the same with visual enhancements
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App

I find they made the zooming a lot better than the stock browser. It has more of a mobile safari feel to it which I think is a good thing. Also, I love the fact that you can get to the open tabs on your desktop chrome.
There are missing things such as the quick control and the URL bar doesn't go away so you can't have full screen. I think it is also missing the feature to request the desktop version of a page also.

The no flash is defiantly a deal breaker for me, but hey, remember it is free and still in beta!

Also there is no way to change the UAString which means it will always be stuck in "Mobile" until/if they add the ability to change it (All websites will come up in mobile view).

Great info here. I was not aware of the lack of flash, but everyting else seems ok. Since it is just Beta, I am hoping for some great improvements. Browsing is WAY faster!

Cons:
- no flash... Ever
- pages run as mobile with no option to switch to desktop
- no accessibility options ... Can't run pages with inverted Colours
- runs as a service, eating up precious ram
- no chrome extensions - vs. Firefox mobile with plugins, Chrome is pathetic
I have no idea why anyone would use this as a primary browser, considering the stock browser is superior is almost every way.

It is just a Beta release.....

Is that how we justify crappy, unfinished software?
The browser is what it is, featureless.

Beta means that you can't complain for it missing something.
Google likes to "release early and iterate quickly". Which means a lot of things come out as Beta.

Immediately after getting ICS on my TF101, I installed Chrome Beta, it is nice, but as others have already said:
Pro:
- bookmark sync, i just LIKE IT, works same as desktop chrome: start typing url and it will autocomplete from your bookmarks... missed it on old browser.
Con:
- No arabic support (while default browser does support arabic)
- No flash, which i don't need much, i have it disabled on default Browser.
will it ever support extensions? that will be great

Which part? The way people use the term beta or the fact that there aren't many features?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk

I see people didnt bring up the fact that you cant get rid of (at the very least) the status bar like you can with the Google Labs option in the stock ICS browser. Id use Chrome beta every second I was online with my SGN if I could "maximize" the screen.

I'm not questioning features, i'm questioning your expectations of a BETA product and your understanding of what BETA means. It seems to me that you're expecting this to be some magical browser from day one, which it is certainly not - that's why it's a damn BETA!

You guys are not aware of this pro:
It stops redirecting websites, just like desktop browsers. Opera, Dolphin, Firefox, or stock browser doesn't have this.
For me, this is the biggest plus.

When you email yourself or someone else a page using Chrome on your GN? Does it leave the subject blank? It's driving me nuts!

Chrome Beta vs. Stock ICS Browser?

Just trying to get some feedback on the the launch of the chrome beta and how it compares to the stock ICS browser. Even after the 4.0.4 gapps update Im feeling they're pretty similar in speed. Overall Im not not yet sure which one I prefer. Hopefully your insight will help me out.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
The UI/UX is far superior, but it lacks critical features to make it a replacement - at least for me.
We'll see in a few months when a better developed version comes out.
I heard that Chrome is a good browser. I think i will download it once flash gets support on it. Still may give it a go than delete it afterwards. I have the newest GAPPS though so i do notice a difference in speed as far as the stock browser.
no full screen and hide status bar was a dealbreaker. hopefully it will be added in later.
The UI is good, love how the tabs work, and the speed is okay.
I notice that some pages will automatically zoom in, then zoom out, and then zoom in again while the page is loading, without me ever touching the screen. Very distracting.
Also sometimes the zoom goes too far in.
And I can't render pages in desktop mode.
I probably need to wait for another beta release or two before it's ready for me.
I've noticed it to be a bit more of a battery hog compared to stock browser. Once they add support for extensions and some more features I will switch.

Chrome will not be getting flash.
http://www.computerworld.com/s/arti...chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8&q=chrome+android+flash
Hoping for improvements in the laggy typing (esp in URL bar) and "request desktop site" to show up then it'll be 100% primary.
I'm sticking with the stock browser, more than enough for me. I tried out chrome, wasn't a big fan but I don't hate it though. I didn't like was the look of it, it was disappointing.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I noticed that too :/ but hopefully that'll be improved
I like it overall, but I think i like the stock browser a little more
comparing a beta with a out of beta software is like comparing a pair of chop stick with toothpick.
as of right now, i set chrome as default because it is faster than the stock browser. chrome offer keyboard prediction, which hands down a win for me.

I still like dolphin hd best. Stock + as a close second. Chrome is nice for a first offering.
I personally can't stand Dolphin HD. I used to use it a lot back in the day, but now it just seems too bloated and laggy. I really like Chrome beta, though I'll stick with stock ICS Browser (especially with the 4.0.4 update) for now.
I did notice that Chrome beta cannot handle proxies. I can use the Wifi at work just fine with ICS Browser (I have the proxy info entered in the System Wifi settings) but Chrome beta cannot seem to use those same settings, so it just fails and gives a generic error message that is actually meant for the desktop version of the browser.
I'm really digging chrome so far. Tab handling is awesome and so much better than stock. Directly syncing open tabs from chrome on the computer is awesome. Syncing all bookmarks from chrome is awesome.
The only thing missing is flash but who cares. It is used little enough these days and I don't usually need to see those pages on my phone anyway.

Exactly.
I haven't run into any bugs yet, and it syncs. I even switched back to Chrome from Firefox on the desktop because I want tab sync (and Firefox Mobile just doesn't seem usable to me).
I really like Chrome but if I want flash I have to use stock browser. I think stock browser is excellent too though..

And about native browser 4.0.4? Where i can find? Needs root for update it?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I'm definitely loving chrome . Already am using it as my default browser. Its fast and pinch to zoom is butter. The tabs are fun little add on too, I like the whole 3d effect. The only things I miss from stock browser are the on screen controls and ability to request desktop site easier. Even though it doesn't really bother me to scroll down the page to get the desktop site, and then from what I've noticed , once you click on desktop site for one website , every website after that automatically loads in desktop form , which I think is great. I think for the initial beta release Google has done a great job. Definitely like how it dominates all the HTML 5 tests too

What's the best browser for this phone?

I like the native web browser application that comes with the phone, but too many times I feel when I scroll on a page, the page doesn't move.. and I need to scroll again.. or there's a lag with the scrolling. Regardless, what do you think is the best browser to use on the Galaxy Nexus for performance? I have plugins set to on demand btw.
I don't have any browser problems. Fast and responsive on stock.
Google Chrome is a good alternative browser for ICS.

Whenever I've tried Chrome and scroll there's block of white that take forever to load the rest of the page. The native app is snappier than Chrome IMO. I'm on the latest CM9 btw.
Been using Chrome Beta because I'm a total Chrome addict on my laptop machine. Everything just integrates perfectly, including address and form autofill data.
The stock Browser works good though can't fault it. Much improved over the 2.3 browser for sure.
Ics + browser is easily the best imo. Built off the stock one with enhancements I worship that damn browser. Especially with the quick control edits for 3 rings, gestures, etc.
Chrome would be good but its not as smooth and is choppy. And I loathe its service that runs constantly.
Chrome beta for me
I swap between the stock one and chrome beta.

Chrome all the way.
ICS+ works for me! Much better than stock in terms of fluidity!
I'm using chrome beta at the moment
Currently in terms of performance I think the stock browser is better on balance due to the flash integration. Although its very close to chrome on the other aspects of performance.
I'm going to stick with chrome though as I don't really use flash content and its still in beta so the performance can only get better.. makes sense to get used to it.
Oh and the chrome icon is nicer.. looks better sitting in my dock

Chrome for Android, or for our device, simply sucks IMO. Slow when switching back/forward and has an incredibly annoying bug when you're searching for something on Google(ironic) and when you input letters, they misteriously get deleted, switched around, etc. It works when you're searching from the address bar but when you're on google.com and editing the search field, things get messed up seriously.
I can not recommend Opera Mobile enough. It's fast as hell and offers more features IMO. If syncing your browsing history is not of huge importance, switch to Opera.

So the author of "chrome is garbage" is refuting my post for being subjective?
Of course it's subjective... I wrote it, is unlikely to be someone else's opinion.
There is only two things I can think of that chrome doesn't have.
Flash support. This is worthless to me but some people want it I guess.
Some sort of decent word wrap or page fit on resize. Not major but would be nice.
Tab, bookmark and history sync. Tab switching. Full screen. These me than make up for formatting for me.
If I wanted flash for some reason I would use aosp or this I guess. But I don't.
chrome eats a lot of memory though
it heats up the phone wtih constantly using
it LAGGS
there are many other browser, like mozilla(or many other),that are faster

Chrome sucks on this tablet

I always felt Web browsing was too sluggish on my T800. It even felt felt like pages would take a long time to load... as if my internet was slow.
I saw in another thread someone mentioned that the stock browser performed better for them, so I gave it a shot. Man, what a difference. It is VERY noticeably more responsive. Smooth scrolling, pages load faster (though I still feel not fast enough... no idea why).
Why does chrome perform so poorly on this tablet? Or is it that the stock browser is just that much better?
I wish I could import my browsing history, bookmarks, etc from chrome. Main reason why I used it.
Anyone else noticed how bad chrome runs on this tablet?

I'm just as disappointed as you especially when chrome is a Google product. Lately I've been using Opera for tablet and it's much better then all of the other ones. There are some minor bugs but nothing i can't live with.
It is rather slow on this tablet.
The thing the stock browser does best is embedded videos. It is almost at PC level performance. In Chrome or Dolphin forget having a positive experience. In Dolphin videos take 10 seconds to load then constantly buffer.

Hmmm. I'm running Chrome Beta as well and I guess it seems to load pages faster. The way that Chrome does bookmarks continues to annoy. 3 clicks. Every time I want to access a bookmark it takes 3 clicks, menu, bookmarks, bookmark. Could Google literally make it any harder? Neater Bookmarks which works so well on Chrome desktop isn't available on Android. Also I can't even add a new bookmark to my desktop bookmarks from my tablet. And in Kit Kat Google removed the ability to sync the stock browser with Chrome bookmarks. No worries, want to just import your bookmarks into the stock browser? Sorry you can't do that now either. It's as if instead of fixing Chrome they are trying to force us into using it by breaking everything else.
How about a bookmarks sidebar Google? I mean would it KILL you?
Don't you just hate it when that nifty software "upgrade" breaks all of your favorite features?
Chrome keeps your browser history in sync on all devices, so no need for bookmarks, manual syncing, whatsoever.

That is if you want to use Chrome. Before KitKat you could sync Chrome bookmarks with the stock browser. No more. Also you cannot add a bookmark to your desktop synced Chrome bookmarks. Try it. You can't. So so lame.
Just tested. Samsung tablet hack doesn't make stock Chrome any faster. Does seem to speed up Beta a bit. Considering all of the other hassles Chrome browser delivers almost not worth it.

Atlas shows promise but a couple things make it not yet competitive with the stock browser:
1) It needs a dedicated bookmarks button on the menubar. As far as I can tell you have to click menu then bookmarks and then your bookmark. 3 steps just like Chrome. I could have missed the dedicated button if there is one.
2) The bookmarks tree collapses every time you select a bookmark. It should reopen to the last folder you had open so you don't have to drill down each time.
3) Doesn't seem to play embedded videos yet. It will play them on the YouTube website but could not get them to launch in other websites.
4) It is a little slower to load Web pages with Javascript enabled than stock browser IMHO.
Nice start but not a stock replacement yet.

Atlas shows promise but a couple things make it not yet competitive with the stock browser:

I don't sync my pc bookmarks with my mobile devices. My activities on the pc, financial transactions, paying bills, etc I don't typically use on my mobile devices. (I travel every week so my pc doesn't get much other use) The few that I use on both (XDA) I just save on one device then it syncs with the rest.

As far as I can tell the only browser which allows for complete unlimited bookmarking across all platforms is Maxthon. They have a nice desktop browser and seamlessly syncs over the cloud with your Android Maxthon. Also easy to import bookmarks from other platforms. The ONLY thing that makes me nuts about Maxthon is that every time you choose a new bookmark from your bookmark tree it opens it in a new tab so you end up with 80 tabs open. There is no way to turn this off and no reason for it. It is like they created the perfect browser then left one insanely stupid thing right in the middle of it, like a supermodel with broccoli in her teeth. Tons of people complain about this on their message boards but they never change it. For some reason THEY think it's a good idea. It's not.
Anyway for multiplatform bookmark syncing and fast browsing you can't beat Maxthon - just that one damned stupid "feature" makes it just a little less that perfect.
If you try this use the Fast version, not the Tablet version. Embedded videos are super fast using this.
UPDATE. Damn this latest version of Maxthon BLAZES.
