[Q] GNex on Stock ICS 4.03; can't root or flash - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey guys i bought a GNex off a Google employee and the phone came stock with 4.03. I've already unlocked the bootloader but can't get the phone rooted or flash with a different rom. I've even tried to upgrade to 4.04 that was just released but it will not let me upgrade.
Is there a way i can flash to 4.02? any help will be greatly appreciated

Have you rooted and installed CWM Recovery?

cannot root the phone, i've tried and phone just hangs

Have you downloaded the gnex toolkit in the development thread and tried that?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

tried the wugfresh and the gnex toolkit 5.2; wont let me root 4.03

Have you installed a custom recovery?

which custom recovery? cwm recovery will not work without root access correct?

you can not have cwm recovery without root. do u have a GSM or LTE GN?

LTE version
I cant seem to find a way to root 4.0.3

Incorrect.
Root access gives you write access to the OS, which is separate from recovery. The standard root method for a Nexus device is to remove security from the bootloader, which then allows you to install non-signed images. You then install a custom recovery image. The custom recovery allows you to flash non-signed OS changes, which means you can flash the su binary and busybox (giving you root)...
You need to use fastboot to flash cwm, then you can install su and busybox...

ok gotcha, i was under the stupid assumption that i needed to gain root access to install a custom recovery. im going to give it a shot and see what happens

If you want to install recovery from the OS, then you would need an insecure/rooted OS. If you want to install recovery from the bootloader, then you would need an insecure/unlocked bootloader...

thanks so much, got recovery on there and updated the phone and rooted it as well. appreciate the help

Same here
Same thing happened to me. I installed the Gnex toolkit and unlocked the bootloader. Then I tried to root the phone: It restarted and I turned on USB debugging as it said and nothing happened.
So you're saying that I can skip the rooting and "Rename Recovery Restore File" before I "Flash CWM Recovery". After that I can try rooting through Gnex Toolkit 5.2?

Can I flash CWM on Non-Rooted Nexus, but Unlocked Bootloader?

Hey.
Title says all.
Or should I just boot into recovery without flashing when I need to do it on the toolkit?
Also, for flashing kernels do they require root?
Thanks!
Cwm can be flashed on non-rooted as long ad its unlocked.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
ok thanks man and do you know if kernels require root? To install?
edit: Tried to flash CWM and it said "an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!" Looks like it requires su.
Without root, you'll have to do it via fastboot. Go to clockworkmod site and download the one for your phone, your call as for touch version or not. Place it in the same directory as fastboot, then "fastboot flash recovery <filename>".
Alright thanks Johan. Do you know if flashing kernels requires root?
No, but you'll have to go into CWM (or use fastboot) to flash one, meaning you can't just use rom manager or other apps that install stuff.
Alright, thanks.
Root is only require inside the os. Everything else can be done with just unlocking.

Root after 4.0.4 update

I have a GSM Galaxy Nexus that i manually updated to 4.0.4, i'm just wondering how i can now get root back?
I restored root with Voodoo OTA root keeper however i do not appear to actually have root, despite it saying that i do and still having the super user application installed.
Screens: http://i40.tinypic.com/5v1y05.png and http://i42.tinypic.com/156ffdh.png
How would i go about getting root back? I have tried running superboot again which is how i originally rooted, however my phone appears to get stuck on the screen with the unlocked padlock if i attempt that: http://android.modaco.com/topic/348161-01-feb-r4-superboot-rooting-the-gsm-lte-galaxy-nexus/
Any help would be appreciated,
Cheers
to root... download su.zip and flash in recovery
this su.zip is the newer one

Do i need a customer recovery for that? my boot loader is unlocked and i had the stock rom rooted. I never flashed any customer recovery as i believe it disabled OTA updates?

After installing 4.0.5:
Use the Galaxy nexus Toolkit and select the option to "Boot to CWM without flashing recovery". And just use CWM to flash su.zip for root. Thats what I did.
Stock 4.0.4 - Rooted Galaxy Nexus.
link not working
The link is not available:-(
"Error (404)
We can't find the page you're looking for. Check out our Help Center and forums for help, or head back to home."
After you flash clockwork and superuser just reboot your phone and the stock recovery will be restored. You have to delete a file to make the custom recovery stick.
hi, as I said in other topic , for rooting i use GALAXY NEXUS TOOLKIT 5.1 ! all work fine
at opening tell you have 4.0.2 ICL53F, and then choose 4 for root

Tried all the above: the su.zip does it's job but it is not rooted, in toolkit I choose root phone and does nothing. How do I do it manually with an insecure boot? I'm on 4.04 GSM.
10x
I understand that OTA RootKeeper is to keep root when you receive an OTA update. Not if you manually update (the app description in google play says this). Has anyone tried OTA RootKeeper, gotten the 4.0.4 OTA update and stayed rooted? I myself will wait for the 4.0.4 OTA update and have installed RootKeeper. Will I keep root if done this way?

In Android 4.0.4 this is not necessary.
Custom recovery will not be overwritten after reboot.
If you flash Clockworkmod via fastboot,it will remain, and you can flash Superuser.
Hey guys I am A BIG NEWBIE so don't judge lol.
I had root with 4.0.2 and had the OTA 4.0.4 update and lost the root. I tried to get root back the same way I got my original one (with fastboot-windows) but does not seem to work.
Any help?

[Q] Re-Root After 4.1.2 Upgrade?

I have an unlocked I9250 Galaxy Nexus that was rooted. I recently upgraded to 4.1.2 using the automatic update. I had Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper installed which worked for the last upgrade, so I didn't even think about it. But I lost my root. Is there a way to re-root without losing any settings or data? When I boot into recovery I see the android with a red exclamation point. I assume My custom recovery was removed with the upgrade. Thanks!
I know this isn't answering your question, but I wanted to mention that I, too, had Voodoo OTA RootKeeper installed when I updated to 4.1.2 and it worked perfectly. I was on stock 4.1.1.
Sent from my rooted GSM Galaxy Nexus
Was I supposed to run the rootkeeper app prior to upgrading? I did not do that. Although I would think that it would have saved the superuser file from the previous run. I'm not sure how it works. either way, I definitely am not rooted anymore and not sure what to do. I'm not even sure if there are tools to root 4.1.2, or if the old toolkit works the same with this upgrade.

Hmm good question. All I did was open it prior to the update to verify that all of the checkboxes under "Status" were filled in and su was protected.
After the update downloaded, rebooting took me into ClockworkMod Recovery where I had to give the ok to install the new file.
The only thing I needed to do after updating was flash ClockworkMod Recovery again. Everything else was fine.
As for rooting your new stock 4.1.2, here's a good place to start. You shouldn't loose your data assuming the bootloader is still unlocked.

Thanks everyone. Will doing this require a factory reset or any internal data loss? Or does that only occur when unlocking the phone?

[Q] Getting broken andy trying to root on linux

Hello all,
I'm still a beginner with rooting but just picked up a gnex as a replacement due to breaking my other phone. Anyway I really only have access to a linux machine right (ubuntu 12.10) and am having some trouble rooting it. I'm using this toolkit found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1848036
and it worked fine for unlocking the bootloader. Now trying to root it copies over su.zip find but when the gnex tries to reboot it just goes to the broken andy screen after showing the google splash image as well as the unlock symbol. Not sure what to do next... Sorry if this is a dumb question just want to get root access so I can flash a 4.2.1 rom. I'm currently on Verizon with their 4.1.4 version.
Thanks

That makes sense. So do I flash the ClockworkMod Recovery first? I tried that and then the root and it still failed.
you need to flash cwm, then boot into cwm and flash su.zip.

Best way to root, unlock BL and install custom recovery

I have Xperia z1 compact running stock non-rooted 14.6.A.1.236 rom. My bootloader is locked. I want to be able to install custom roms. What's the best way to root, unlock bl and install custom recovery? I've been searching forum for past few days but most of the download links redirect to d-h.st. and that breaks the chain of needed files.
Also i never used flashtool and i don't know should i use Sony flashtool or "original" one

I don't think so. Just need adb...
I guess I don't have to open a new thread for this: I've been reading a lot about this recently and trying to get my thoughts straight about this:
I found PhilZ Dual Recovery (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2647480) which works with locked bootloader. Some people wrote there they installed the recovery on 5.0.2, so it seems I have to downgrade first (I'm on 5.1.1), even though it doesn't say that in the manual..? - if you can't answer that I'll ask that later then in the linked thread.
Next thing: I rooted with Kingroot, but want to switch to SuperSU - cant switch because theres a problem with the binary, so I have to flash it anyway through custom recovery.
Can I now root with Kingroot, install PhilZ Dualrecovery and when it boots into Recovery Mode, can I just flash the SuperSu.zip?
OR would I need to boot normally first after custom recovery install, then uninstall Kingroot, to unroot, and THEN flash SuperSU in Recovery?
Ive been using root for years but never really got into flashing before so I'm quite new to that and appreciate your help. Thanks a bunch.

You don't have to downgrade to flash NUT. It's been a while since I did it, but I'm pretty sure that flashing supersu won't totally remove Kingroot. Best thing to do once you're rooted, if you don't want to unlock bl, is probably to install recovery, then in recovery flash a prf, which will wipe your system and install new system with supersu instead of Kingroot.

I don't trust any universal rooting apps. Only way to legit root your phone is to downgrade to kitkat and then root using exploit, then flash prerooted lollipop (that is if you wan't to stay on stock rooted rom). If you don't plan on staying on stock room and only want quick root you have to use kingroot since that's only universal root that can root z1c. When it comes to recovery there you have two choices. To use xzdualrecovery or to unlock bootloader (you will loose drm keys which means you will lose stuff like x-reality) and flash normal recovery. I would go for dual recovery because if you ever wan't to get back to stock you can since stock recovery isn't getting overwritten with xzdr. But if you choose to unlock bootloader first backup TA (you have to be rooted) and then unlock.
Hope this helps

I would go with unlock bl method. You can restore TA after rooting so you done lose drm, and it's easy to root with unlocked bl - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72547776&postcount=6
