[Q] Should I buy a Galaxy Nexus? Coming from SGSII Exynos - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So it's been a couple of months since the Galaxy Nexus came out so I think I'll get better information now as opposed to when it first came out.
I have an AT&T GSII and I love it. I have the ICScrewd rom on it and it's very fast and fluid and I also have a 16GB card to bring my total storage space to 32GB which is nice since I have a lot of pictures on my device. The screen isn't 720p and that's something I'd love to have and I'd also love to have ICS.
I'd have to sell my GSII for hopefully $350 and I'd also sell a Captivate I have (it's cracked but still works fine so I'd sell it for maybe $60-$80) and pay the difference for a GN (probably $140 out of pocket).
What would you all suggest based on your experience with the GN and GSII (Exynos) if you had it?

The experience is still the same as day one. Very fast and quick phone, so no the information you get from those other threads compared to this one won't be much.
No regrets using the GN, came from Nexus S and Galaxy S (Vibrant) before that.

Do it.
You won't regret it.

How is the glass? I know it's not Gorilla Glass but it is as sturdy as the iPhone 4 you think?

Never used a iPhone 4 so I wouldn't know how to compare it.
I haven't gotten a scratch on it. No screen protector, just Otterbox Commuter + Extended GSM battery.
The screen itself is fortified, some people have complained that it isn't good blah blah blah. From my own experience, it's fine for me. Gorilla glass is not immune to scratches either. Just marketed better I guess.

I just ordered a GN from Amazon for Verizon and should have it next Tuesday. I am coming from the Epic 4G Touch (SGS2) from Sprint which is using the same processor at AT&T's. I am also curious if anyone has made the jump from this phone and how there experience has been.
I am looking forward to the GN and just hope it does not disappoint. Really looking forward to running ICS as well. Was never really that excited to run a stock Android device until now...

I never had the SGSII but I would assume the GN would just be like a sidegrade for you. I wouldn't get the GN if I already had a SGSII. Other than that the Galaxy Nexus is the best phone that I've ever had, coming from the Nexus One

That's the same thing I said when coming from Vibrant to Nexus S. I don't regret getting the NS either and you GS2 switchers most likely wouldn't either.

I'm in the exact same boat as the OP, sort of. I'm with Sprint and I've got the Epic 4G touch (SGSII with a stupid name). Anyway, my line is due for an upgrade in April (JOY) and I'm debating whether I should get the nexus. I've always been curious and kinda wanted a pure google phone. I love modding, flashing custom roms, tweaking, theming, etc. There is a VERY experimental CM9 rom available for my device but its not a daily driver. I flashed it though, just to check it out and I have fallen in love with ics, plain.
I guess my main question is: Considering the Verizon is also CDMA, will the custom roms and rooting methods available for the Verizon version work on the Sprint version? If not, I'd imagine there would still be plenty of development for the Sprint version, right?
To be honest, there are some nice roms for the Epic 4G touch but overall, I've owned other devices where the development seemed much stronger. I want a device that a LOT of developers will work on.
Any opinions, suggestions, advice? Also, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I've also got my eye on the possibility of Sprint getting the Galaxy Note.

Verizon CDMA will not work for Sprint. Only Verizon. Sprint is getting their own version of the Galaxy Nexus but it's unknown when it will be getting it officially but it will probably be soon.
Another thing to add, when purchasing Galaxy Nexus.. make sure you get it from a reputable seller that is willing to fulfill the warranty because you are not covered by Samsung (at least the GSM version).

I AM talking about the one sprint's getting. I'm not gonna try to buy a Verizon one and connect it on sprint. That would never work. My question is: do u think the custom roms developed for the Verizon version will work on the sprint version since they're both cdma?

Will have to wait for the Sprint version to come out to answer you on that. The rooting method will definitely be the same
1. Get Fastboot drivers
2. fastboot oem unlock

latest version of ICS (4.04) is awsome
I was already happy I got GN, but the latest version is great - battery life is substantial. Get it

I don't see why not. It's a Nexus device, and many ROMs for the Galaxy Nexus are cross-compatible (not in the same package.... but both GSM & LTE)
at most, the radio/basebands will be different.
Kernel flashable zips are cross compatible.

I'm on the same boat, trying to figure out if I should switch to sprint when the GN comes out (better plan purposes) but hoping the sprint version will get as much love from the developers as the Verizon version.
Just wondering ....... what kind of plan do ya have on Verizon?

My 32GB iPhone 4S has not been used as much since getting my Galaxy Nexus. I really like my HTC Rezound but I think I may like my Nexus more. None of my HTC Rezound's would have the mobile hotspot work for over ten minutes before dropping the data connection. My GN has not dropped its data connection while using the mobile hotspot yet. (Being that I'm allowed unlimited data on my SMARTPHONE I pay to connect to other devices)

You won't be disappointed at all also I read a couple weeks ago (and correct me if I'm wrong ) the the omap 4460 has the same performance as the current exynos processors , only the omap isn't as power efficient.

I just switched from the GS2 Exynos to the gsm nexus three days ago, and believe it's worth it. The user experience is a whole different and ICS is just so good. And the screen resolution is awesome, reading on my phone has never been such a pleasure. Just get it and see for yourself

Return SGS2 - Wait for Nexus?

I am debating returning my sgs II, while I still have 15 days left to return it to wait for the Galaxy Nexus. I love the hercules, and im not returning it because of problems, I just want ICS and I feel like even though its a top rated phone, it will take forever to get ICs on it. I also think the Galaxy Nexus GSM version will be available around the same time as verizon version. Anyone have any input?

I think you will be waiting atleast a couple of months after it released on verizon before you see the GSM version. Plus there are quite a few devices either identicle or very similar to ours. So I think once one gets ics the porting will be much easier.

Yeah its a hard decision because I really like this phone....just don't wanna pass up the time I am able to return it for full price, and then regret not returning it. You really think it will be a couple months for a gsm version? Why do you say that?
return it, cancel it, and get another SGS2 from another store
then you auto extent to another 15 days
Be careful with this. Took my Tmobile gs2 back because of the screen issues and rebooting. Got a new one with minimal line issues and it seems snappier, but the guy told me it was the last exchange in the store. Me thinking I had 10 more days. Apparently since I returned an amaze and bought a BRAND NEW phone, the 14 days did not reset for me. I was always told anytime I had a new device it would reset the return period.

Well, I bought outright, so i actually get 30 days to return Its only 15 days if you buy with contract at a discounted price. And I have thought of that also...i still have til the 15th so ill give it a few more days and see if we get any news about the nexus I guess.... i dunno
Galaxy Nexus comes mid November 17 to 28 according to the fans in the GN forum.
personally i'm not excited at all about the GN, it's like a side-upgrade compared to SGS2
if you want a HD 720 device that is as best as you can get for Tmobile
otherwise SGS2 is the top of the hill at the moment spec wise
Considering how long it took for the Galaxy S2X to show up on Telus doorstep I wouldn't hold my breath for any upgrades.
It sucks as two good phones will be out but you'll have to decide of which two has the more important features and myself I love the screen on the Galaxy S2X

They did. But you will still will be waiting 3-4 months for a gsm version also keep in mind importing it might be more money then just waiting for the release. It is suppose to be released on Verizon right after black Friday. It was stated by various android sites recently. I wouldn't upgrade to it. If we get cm support or miui we will probably get ics within weeks after source drops.

im keeping mine ,the leaked speculation for the next galaxy phone are incredible...5mp camera and no sd slot ,that imo is going backward .i know the resolution is there and so is ICS but i can wait for it and if the next galaxy phone is anything close to being as planned then i would think it would be the right decision to keep the phone....unless you just got a bunch of money to blow then go for it
stick with the GalaxyS2 boss! like someone said earlier in this thread - we'll get ICS support fairly quickly with a ROM after source hits. specs are better on our phone and the lack of microsd card was a bit of a deal killer for us.
i'm getting galaxy nexus with 1280x720 resolutions! that is like putting your home desktop monitor in your pocket! haha
and 4.65 screen which the GS2 can never give me!

Unlocked Galaxy Nexus from Google still a good phone?

I'm wondering if you guys would recommend the unlocked Galaxy Nexus (purchased directly from Google), considering it is a fairly old phone at this point. I have a Samsung Captivate (I897) that is REALLY slow and annoying. My current contract is up at the end of November. By that point, the next iPhone will be out, along with what I'm sure will be many new Android phones to choose from. Would you recommend I just put up with my Captivate until then, or put up the $349 and get the unlocked Nexus now? Thanks, in advance, for your input!
I see at least two new thread daily asking if the Galaxy Nexus is still worth purchasing considering it is "old". My answer is yes, and I believe the majority of people would agree. New iPhone or not, Galaxy Nexus is one hell of a phone to have. If you want you could wait for the next Nexus release, but if you are considering an iPhone over a Nexus - go Nexus.
I wouldn't say it's old at all. We're in a unique position in that phone releases have significantly slowed recently. As far as physical design is concerned, the only superior phone I can name would be the HTC One series, but that would still come down to personal preference.
But I go by external hardware, not internals. Thanks to JB, the Galaxy Nexus will be plenty fast enough for at least another year.
My captivate isn't slow or annoying!
I'd say mess around with the ROMs available for the captivate. We just got jelly bean yesterday in the development thread. We have some great devs who work very hard.
I've tried out the newer phones in the stores, and I'm still very happy with the captivate.
To answer the original question though, that phone would be a great buy.
Galaxy Nexus is still the best phone you can buy.

honestly, you won't find a better value-for-money anywhere in the android world, particularly with all the new googly candy flavors coming out first in vanilla style and ready to flash. as much as I hated my LG Optimus speed, this one's a keeper for sure.
My phone is rebooting with the Jelly Bean OTA as I type this so yes, it is worth it. Aside from a lackluster camera it's still a great phone that has enough power to handle anything you throw at it. I don't see any reason to upgrade to something new at this point. It's not like the performance improvements with the new generation of phones really adds that much IMO. The S3 has some really cool features like windowed videos and whatnot but when it comes down to it's not enough to warrant slow updates and the added costs.
What are the prospects for Nexus to be continually upgraded? How many years can I expect it to be supported. My Cappy would still be on 2.3.x if I was waiting for AT&T and Samsung to get their act together and release 4.x. Or they might say that the Cappy can't handle 4.x. So, do I have to worry that Nexus won't be able to handle 5.x?

Not unless it comes with major changes to the way it runs at the basic level, which is highly unlikely. The Galaxy Nexus will certainly be supported in the next major release, and maybe the one after it. So many developers have the phone, I'm confident that if Google drops support we'll still be getting updates for a long time. You'll want new hardware before it gets dropped completely.
Yes, I think it is. I have Verizon's model, and am debating on getting the GSM version to use on my AT&T account...it all depends on when Verizon plans on launching Jelly Bean.

Doesn't waiting for Verizon to push an update sort of defeat the whole "It's a google phone" thing? I thought one of the biggest advantages of having a Nexus was that they get the updates before anyone else, straight from Google with no bloatware or other tinkering.
I ordered the Nexus from Google!
When I bought my Captivate, it was from AT&T with a 2 year contract. That contract does not end until 11/30/2012.
The contract is connected to my SERVICE, not the phone, right? So, can I simply pull the SIM out of my Captivate and put in in the Nexus and everything will be fine?
And I can I also sell my Captivate before my current contract is up, right?
Thanks for your input!

Right. You'll be just fine switching the SIM card into the Nexus. And yeah, you can sell the Captivate at this point. Really, you could sell an upgrade the moment you walk out of the store (unless you upgrade with Amazon, since their additional discounts have some baggage).
The current price on Google Play for an unlocked Galaxy Nexus is amazing, and it's definitely not "old" by any standards. The SIII might have a slight edge over it, but I would consider "pure Google" an added advantage of the GNexus.

Well, Just bought myself a Galaxy Nexus

Finally. I ordered a Galaxy from EBay and now I have to wait 5-6 days for it to come. So I was wondering what has happened in the Galaxy Nexus community.
Oh I got the Sprint Galaxy Nexus (Toroplus I believe)
Also I was wondering if there were any good fast and stable Jellybean Roms.
So glad to become part of the Nexus Family.

Make the switch, you won't regret it. The specs on the Nexus are not only better (aside from camera and lack of sd slot) but development is light years ahead of the Amaze. There will of course be a new Nexus in the next 3-4 months, but it won't be $350 that's for sure. I came from an Amaze, and a T-Mo S2 and don't regret it one bit.

ugggghhh its just so irritating. they release phones with awesome specs but then you cant developed for it....
i hate it when people say "oh we'll get the latest update from cyanogen xx.xx...."
which is BULL****... considering half the time cyanogen wont ever be as refined or close to being complete on said device considering the lack of kernel source/lack of support from the manufacture... people buying non nexus devices are just being delusional. i have come to that conclusion. maybe manufacturers need to beef up the specs of their nexus device in the upcoming years
i believe the only non nexus device that i believed had a blossoming of development is the T-mobile G2\htc vision (i personally had that phone and had lots of fond moments flashing roms in)
other than that nexus all the way. i just wish htc makes the next nexus or there would be 5 of them in the future
HTC is becoming like Apple at the moment... Their One S .. non removable battery and no SD card slot.. and They won't release their damn Kernel Sources.. they discontinue any device and take a whole lot to update them. im not surprised with what you just said..
ugggghhh its just so irritating. they release phones with awesome specs but then you cant developed for it....
i hate it when people say "oh we'll get the latest update from cyanogen xx.xx...."
which is BULL****... considering half the time cyanogen wont ever be as refined or close to being complete on said device considering the lack of kernel source/lack of support from the manufacture... people buying non nexus devices are just being delusional. i have come to that conclusion. maybe manufacturers need to beef up the specs of their nexus device in the upcoming years
i believe the only non nexus device that i believed had a blossoming of development is the T-mobile G2\htc vision (i personally had that phone and had lots of fond moments flashing roms in)
other than that nexus all the way. i just wish htc makes the next nexus or there would be 5 of them in the future

Have to disagree with you on the "blossoming of development" part.
Have had the captivate. Which to this day. Is still going strong. And had a jellybean port before the gs3.
I had the epic touch 4g and the att gs2. Which are both still amazing phones going strong. And I am now onto the gs3 which isn't even 2 months old. (U.S release) and the number of ROMs and support for it is overwhelming.

You guys are making me inpatient. My Galaxy Nexus won't be here until 5-6 days. So all this reading is making me happy and impatient. I really want the Galaxy nexus :'3
I actually am getting a nexus on Tuesday, coming from a Droid Incredible which has working ports of - Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4.
Its a device that won't die with great devs still, sense 3.5 roms were last developed by Newt/Joelz/Wildstang/Puremotive.
We had an amazing dev and community spot, its dying down as others are upgrading.

High development and seems to be a great and strong community plus the nexus will be my second android phone.
I don't wanna say the nexus is the pinnacle of android phones per-say but its the one fellow nerd lovers and rioters alike will rejoice in a happy community thanks to Google and Samsung.
I honestly cannot wait to start enjoying this phone! Its big enough for my hands, my 3'7 incredible.. my hand swallows this phone and I needed a big phone.
Ahh I'm ecstatic!!!

+1 on that bro, I can't wait for it to be here. And for fun's sake I even spent all night watching an Unboxing video. The only time I have ever touched the Galaxy nexus was in a Sprint store. I looked at the Gnex Screen, then back at mine. Mine looked ****ty compared to the Galaxy Nexus' Gorgeous Screen Resolution. It looked so beautiful. Messed with the UI and felt so smooth. And that was ICS. They say Jellybean is 5x Better than ICS. The moment I get the phone I'll root it and install a good JB Rom.
What's a good Sprint Galaxy Nexus Jellybean Rom?

I also noticed that the people in the Nexus Community are cheerful and don't throw you off for saying something wrong. They're actually polite. Some people in the Evo 3D threads answer questions with sarcasm. As if they're perfect.

For your first jelly bean ROM I recommend going with Bug less Beast. I'm running it right now and it is as stable as anything and I'm about three releases behind (7/19 version.) Its my first rom and its making me a root believer!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I just got a nexus today the unlocked version. I'm debating whether I should root it since I have the stock jelly bean. I came from an iPhone 4s. This will be my second android phone though . My first was a skyrocket. I'm liking what I see so far though.
Of course you should root! The development is astounding I personally have spent many hours molding and tweaking mine and loved every minute of it. We have some of the best and most generous devs in the world

Samsung 4.1 Update List

Hey Just passing this along. Idk if our phone will get the update but since the galaxy sII is on the list there is a good chance.

Yes the official release may take some time, if ever, to get to us. But we might just some leaked builds along the way that would be more than useful.

I just woke up and came here to post this, thanks! lol
I really hope we get some JellyBean goodness, if not, sprint can go shove it!
We will get official Jelly Bean. It's not happening right away, but it will happen.
Our phone is CDMA which is one major reason that we won't see an update as quickly as the international SGS2…
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
If its anything like the moment or epic, it will be when the phone is at its end of life and no longer sold in the stores. Oh, and it will probably be the last official youll see.
I don't expect to see a jelly bean update for this phone. I would genuinely be surprised if it sees official jb.
Although they said the sgsII that doesn't mean the epic 4g touch variant. More stuff to support and more stuff to go wrong that becomes sprints problem. Also, people would see how capable this exynos really is and not go get an sgs3, with the only differences being the screen and a 4g chip you're never gonna use anyway, because sprint wants the world to buy iphones. I'm getting off this sinking ship and switching to verizon asap.

The epic branding has been retired, its now the sph-d710 galaxy s2, Samsung has promised support for a minimum of 18months after release on all devices starting with the gs2 series so we will more than likely get official JB, and it won't take as long as ICS since the upgrade from ICS to JB isn't as intensive as from GB to ICS was. Samsung has sworn off carrier branded devices and starting with the sgs3 all devices will be nearly identical except for the few differences for network compatibility. Mostly radios and modems, otherwise hardware and software will now be as close to exactly the same as the original international variant and all devices will be available on all carriers as close to the same release date as possible.

Wow if what you say is true I will probably stick with the samsungs galaxy line for my next phone, because I was thinking about going right for the next nexus no matter who it was who made it.
They can't even get ICS right, I doubt we get JB.

I'm trying to decide between the note 2 and the new nexus for my personal line, whichever I don't get for it ill be adding on my work line, ill prob be getting the sgs3 on my personal line and putting the et4g on my work line when the note 2 launches until my upgrade comes up in the beginning of Dec. My dads got the sgs3 and will be preordering the note 2 so ill get the sgs3 once his note comes in. That's one good thing about having a technophile for a dad he buys a new phone off contract everytime it drops and gives me his old one so i don't have to use up upgrades too often unless I want a nexus or something he hasn't bought yet. He's been sticking with Samsung since the et4g launched, which I'm fine with I got sick of dealing with HTC and their locked up bootloaders after the GB update on the og evo and after the moto photon I won't ever buy another moto device that thing sucked to try and mod, I can't go with a device that you have to sacrifice something to be able to flash

They won't do a pure Android release of Jelly Bean I don't think because it would be too much of a change for regular people, even though most of us would love it. We will probably be able to get it through sprint id though. I wish they would change the colors in tw to stock Android blue though, so much better then green and white.

Yes....but i believe that when & if that day comes, theres gonna be a butt-load of sg2 users scrambling to get back to stock in a hurry. Ironic, cause the first update is pretty much what helped to cause the mad flash frenzy in the first place,(that & growing old waiting)

Want to purchase a GNex

So with the recent announcement of Ubuntu on phones and my increased interest in android development I want to get a Galaxy Nexus. I found a few on ebay and such, but I wanted to get input from the GNex community on a few things. How much is reasonable to pay for a new or lightly used GNex? Also how much longer will the GNex be a current device with an active community since the Nexus 4 is now out?

Amazon has it for $339 today with prime shipping. Still a great phone.

I am developer too and I got my Gnex 2 months ago, because that phone is heaven for developers. I used to struggle with Galaxy S and few xperias, even One X. But still, Gnex is still king of androids. S3 is my secondary phone, but I prefer Gnex much more, its my prime phone. You can keep with Gnex for another year for sure, except you really want max fps for future games. Otherwise, the phone is great
Cool, thanks for the input. I currently own a HTC Rezound and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, both of which I have rooted and played with custom ROM's. Lately though I have wanted to do my own developing and from what I understand Nexus devices are some of the best for that. An extra bonus is that Ubuntu will be coming soon!

Will this model work with Verizon? I was looking for the SCH-i515 or SCH-i516 which are the Verison 4G models.
GT-I9250: Unlocked version sold on Play Store
SCH-I515 or SCH-I516: Verizon 4G version
I'm new to Nexus devices: Does the Verizon version get automatic updates by Google or is that only the Play Store version. Will my 4G Verizon SIM work in the unlocked version (everything but 4G)?

No. You need a Toro GNex.
Hey Ginger,
The Nexus is an awesome phone, and I to am excited for the Ubuntu phone developments. It will be while before I give up my Android, however,
Anyways in regards to your question, I found this for you:
slickdeals.net/f/5748592-Factory-Recertified-Samsung-Galaxy-Nexus-SCH-I515-Verizon-4G-LTE-220-00
I have seen daily steals around, but I have never used it before. I would research some reviews of the site. However, slickdeals is one of the most credible deal websites out there. I would browse there every now and then.
Hope this helps or at least gets you some more information!
Thank you guys again. I will be sure to look at that sight on occasion.
You could also look on Swappa for deals on android phones. It seems like they have some pretty decent deals.
Whats your opinion on new versus manufacture refurbished devices?
Keep in mind that the chances for Toro to get a running build of Ubuntu is very slim, the radio is very different and it may take a while for developers to get it working weigh all the features

Just an update,
eBay has it available for 189 now.

Same phone i had until tuesday. Bought a 32gb model off my friend for 125 bucks when he got his DNA. It's a sideways move aside from the roms are much better (no funky bluetooth if you run rom x, no volume issues with rom y) and the signal seems a little weaker on it, i used to get 4g in my basement, now i dont. But im very happy with it, since i can do whatever i want on it.

The android ril is open source for toro. Also any assumption toro will be easy or hard needs to wait until we see source code as Ubuntu may use androids ril or their own. The ril is just the layer between the os and radio firmware. I'd think a ril port to ubuntu shouldn't be too difficult.

Checked my local Craigslist (SF Bay Area):
Sprint: $160 - 200
Verizon: $190 - 250
GSM: $200 - 370
Also noticed several postings with the deliberately misleading name "Samsung Galaxy Nexus S" (doesn't exist, but they're trying to sell you a Nexus S, not GNex), and some sketchy ones that are probably stolen phones. Be careful with those (a phone reported stolen to Sprint or Verizon will have its ESN blacklisted and service unusable).
The GSM high end looks expensive, but since it's no longer available on Play Store (was $350 new), buying a new one costs ~$400 from third party now (Amazon, Expansys).
There was also a deal on Verizon GNex off-contract for $230 few months ago, but that's gone as well. Knowing this, you might be able to bargain with CL sellers though.
