Sprint throttles 4G - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

For some time now ive been doing some speedtest on Sprints 4G network and it seems that they throttle 4G because it seems consistent with standard ISP's who throttle also unless you pay for a higher speed. WiMAX is way much powerful and faster than LTE and it has been proven so why is it that sprint seems to only get 10mbps Download and ONLY 10mbps.could they be doing this for a reason ?? I want to know what you guys think ??

There is people that pull over 10 mb/s

wimax is CAPABLE of much higher speeds, however it is dependant on soo many factors i.e. signal stregth, server loads, amount of users connected to the tower, etc, etc.
Just because your not getting the stated speeds (theoretical) does not mean they are throttling. this goes for any ISP bro

It all depends on how many people are connected at the same time. There's only so much bandwidth to go around. There are times when your speed will be slower because more people are connected to the same tower. Just like cable broadband... There are peak times when your speed will be slower

Obviously i know that look at verizon they have more customers and their LTE can pull off 22mbps plus WIMAX (clearwire) has i believe the largest bandwidth/spectrum in the U.S.A
ISP do throttle if you didnt know that if they didnt all the basic data suscribers would be hitting 50mbps.

Couldn't say myself, 4G keeps disconnecting for me constantly, not exactly thrilled with the 4G performance of Sprint at the moment .....

Where I live I get 2 bars of 4G. 2 out of 3. Wimax 4G sucks for me. I probably get around 1mb download.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

1mb is still way better than Sprint 3G!

I think it may have something to do with heat/power. I know wimax is capable of >10mbps but at what cost in terms of battery life? If there were low power cool running wimax chips im sure they could push the envelope.

But for 4G speed it's terrible. It's suppose to be 4G!! My brother has the Google Nexus S on T-Mobile and his 3G tops out around 3MB. Makes my 3G look like garbage lol. He's able to tether and the speeds are not bad at all. It's decent enough to tether. I can not tether on 3G because the speed is so slow. I have to be on 4G or else it's not even worth tethering. No internet at home so I rely on my phone.

WiMAX is a lot larger frequency, as where LTE is short. It is a lot easier to push LTE than WiMAX because WiMAX requires thrice as many towers to keep the signal from fading.

At work, I pull anywhere from 4-6 down and 0.7-1.5 up. Out and about in the Orange/Santa Ana area, I've gotten as high as 16 down and 4 up. It really just depends like others said, on area and users.

sorry we don't throttle, now what the network can handle during peak hours may be when your affected, but overall we do not touch delivery speed, go talk to t mobile they will tell you we don't, they are the experts lol

From very close by and it depends on how busy network is and where you are. There are also "bursts" which is why you will get 4-6Mbps download then suddenly get @ 12 Mbps down score. My upload speed is consistently 1.4-1.45 Mbps up. The cap on upload is 1.5

That is a speed CAP not throttling. CAP is set top end limit and you won't go faster.
Throttling is when they gradually (or not so gradually) reduce your speeds after a certain period of time or data use.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I could've sworn that if Wimax was deployed at a lower frequency it can have just as good penetration as LTE. Its just Clearwire's Wimax is at 2.6GHz which sucks with penetration.

T-Mobile vs Sprint GS2 SpeedTest

For what its worth did a little download test about 10 sites.
Cleared cache. Both had very good signal. I'm on 4G of course. All browser settings identical.
And...yep...Epic was faster 9 out of 10 sites, usually by quite a bit.
And I'm no 'Homer'...actually pushed TMobile a split sec faster to make sure.!
That's because T-Mobiles "4G" is the GSM varient 3G technology equivalent to Ev-Do Rev. B. It's not official 4G, it's "3.5G" technology known as HSPA+. But glad Sprint's 4G speeds are kicking butt where you are. At my house, 4G rarely connects and when it does, it's slower than my 3G speeds. (I luckily pull 2300 kbps on Sprint's 3G.)

it kills the battery, but my 3G is in the 300K range---

You are very luck on 3g! Most people on Sprint 3g get 100kbps to 900kbps. 4g for me anyhow inside or out is 300kbs to 1.9 kbps...Upload 500kbps to 700kbps..I am in Dallas TX in the top 10 market for any rollouts! Sprint sucks when it comes to data. Had a friend that did a speed test yesterday on regular 3g on Tmobile and got 3000mbps up and down. SMH I just only wish.....Feel sorry for the iPhone users who will have no service lol to 500 kbps on average.
Yeah I don't know what's happened to 3G here.
When I had the Evo 4G...Chicago had a big surge here...like AVERAGING 2500kbps on 3g.
Was poorer on the Evo 3D days but not too bad.
Now (with Epic) it averages 600 or so here.
All I can say is....if there is a surge of IPhone buyers coming in they are going to.be monumentally dissapointed in data speeds!
Whatya thinkin Sprint?
I remain on 4G here...(have a MiFi unit in my bag which helps!). Almost always run 4M average on either 4G or WiFi MiFi.

Ok Einstein....never said it reflected GLOBALLY. Why so irritated?!
It WAS a data transfer test of Wimax vs TMobile HSDP++ of 10 sites I use for 'testing'. Connected to respected networks...not Wifi. (WiFi isn't a network test).
Both had superb signal strength. Both with identical browser conditions.
I suspect if I took both deep inside a building Wimax would not fair as well.
U OK now?

Skyrocket avg'd 12M Note avged 7M.
Then Dually downloaded Gizmodo, and howardforums etc (bout 10 different sites).... and Note downloaded those sites slightly faster than Skyrocket. Also downloaded a 250+ file and same result.
The LTE speedtests are a crock vs real world performance. Who cares......less you just get off on speedtest app contests.
Edit... Both devices on ATT network. Wifi testing:Note was better by more.

3g Speeds

I dont know if it is just a coincidence that the iphone came out today but my 3g speeds have went to a mind numbing crawl. With full bars and using speedtest app, I have not hit over 60 kBs all day. Stopped at sprint store and they said network was overloaded and they couldn't even run normal tests on my phone to diagnose. I think I am having issues anyway since I can't seem to get over 175 kBs in the last two weeks before today and I have a tower 1/4 mile away. I have dreaded the iphone release on sprint since announced.....hope this is not what I can come to expect from here on out. I've been with sprint for 14 years and really don't want to have to change.

That's about how 3g is for me yesterday in Torrance, CA. Very poor performance. When calling Sprint to ask about possible network issues, they kept me on hold for a supervisor for >30min before I hung up. Sprint's network is starting to be a major concern for me.
Sent on the run.
Where i live I am very lucky to break 50k and that been going on for about a yr.
I was going to make a topic about this earlier. Yes sprint did increase the data throughput. As soon as i woke up i checked my speeds as they could not sell a 3g phone that cant even stream music. Sure enough speeds almost at 1mbps normally in my area 50kbps to 300kbps.
I am not a lawyer by any means but since the actual sprint website says:
Sprint Mobile Broadband devices operate at average download speed ranges from 400-700 Kbps with peak rates up to 2 Mbps, and at average upload speeds of 40-70 Kbps with peak rates up to 144 Kbps in Mobile Broadband (EVDO Rev 0) coverage areas.
Sprint Mobile Broadband devices that are EVDO Rev A will operate at average download speed ranges from 450-800 Kbps with peak rates up to 3.1 Mbps, and at average upload speeds of 300-400 Kbps with peak rates up to 1.8 Mbps in Mobile Broadband (EVDO Rev A) coverage areas.
https://www.sprint.com/business/products/products/evdoCoverage2.jsp
Do I have any recourse based on what they say I should get vs what I actually get? Maybe a breach of contract or something or violation of TOS......thems my only legal terms I learnt and can use, lol.
In all seriousness, it just doesn't seem right that I am told I would get one thing and I am locked in for 2 years with it but yet I get another. Kind of a bait and switch thing..........wait.......another legal jargon phrase that just came to me, haha.
Increase In Speed
For the past month I been doing a speed test every morning as soon as i get into work. Till today I have not gone over 0.5 Mbs download (Honolulu, Hawaii)
But today I ran the same test i do every day and was able to hit 1.56 Mbs!!!!
Did a 4G test and got 0.1 Mbs ...super crap speeds as always.
Ran some more speed test on 3G and was surprised to get all of them around
1 Mbs. Sprint must have upped their throughput for the iphone 4 crap.
Wonder how long it will stay like this. If my speeds drop again after the initial iPhone crap I'm going to be very pissed.

Starting?! Man, sprint's network has sucked big bawls for roughly the last 2 years. maybe even longer but iv only been with em for 3 years. I got 1 year left. Hopefullly ill be earning more by next year and jump ship to verizon and their vastly superior LTE network...even VZW's 3g network matches Sprints 4g in most areas of Los Angeles.
3g gets me 1.30mbps down and .50mbps up. Haven't been able to test 4g speeds, as I can't seem to get a 4g connection eventhough I'm smack dead in a 4g area.
I noticed I dramatic increase at my work. I couldn't believe it. Previously it was less than 300 kbps.

I don't trust the speedtest app anymore. I did a test and it showed that I was getting some horrendously slow speed. Shortly after, I got a notification that doubletwist had an update. Almost 7mb program, downloaded and installed in, no joke, about 20 seconds. Did a speedtest on Speakeasy's website and got a very different result
Speeds have improved dramatically, but I'm not sure why the app doesn't reflect that.

Speeds have been fine for me personally, this is all 3G at my home in eastern West Virginia.

Stay with Sprint?

Sept 1st and my contract is up.
I love the epic, but time for a new phone. It got me thinking how much do I like sprint. Honestly I love the price. The internet has been awful. Phone calls have been dropping like flies for the last few months.
I saw this test about 3g/4g speeds
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2405607,00.asp
So I started to look, and it seems like T Mobile would be the same price as sprint. The others would not be much more.
Just wondering what you guys are thinking, and if anyone has had t mobile.
Now if only I could get the peoples rom on it I would be sold.
September first for me too.
Only difference, I'm being ripped off financially by Sprint.
So I'm definitely jumping ship.
As for me I'm looking at T-Mobile at $70 savings over Sprint, and Verizon at $30. Verizon has superior everything, T-Mobile has price. Hmmm.
Frankly it's all the same as far as T-Mobile and Sprint go. The coverage you're going to get with T-Mobile will vary depending on location, and will get better signal in some places as opposed to Sprint, and vice versa. I get full bars at my cousins cabin up north, while my uncle's T-Mobile phone can't get a signal whatsoever. A few miles further and it's flipped.
As far as data speed go you will see a defined performance boost. Sprint's data is the worst in the business, so the only way is up. HSPA+ gets the same, if not better speeds than full bars 4G on Sprint. I'll take throttling over consistent crap speeds any day.
My contract is up at the same time but I think the smartest thing for me to do would be to see how good lte is by december. I work in a sprint store but still not satisfied with the data like u guys. LTE should be covered as much as wiimax by the end of 2012 and should be covered double of wiimax coverage by next year. Still have hope lol. However I am extremely satisfied with my bill though. On a family plan with jp morgan discounts. Each of us pay exactly 50 a month and it covers the whole bill.
I'd say if your not going to be covered in LTE or have at least decent coverage, then jump ships. I should be pretty much covered here in Central Texas so... I'm not to worried about my .20mbps 3G connection for very much longer.

Cell strength bars and 4G speeds are unrelated. I have had no bars and no 3G and still connect to 4G with better speeds than that. 4G is a different band.

IMO,this is very clear, given the endless hardware and compatibility issues you have run across
As to speeds...
I get 4-5mb speeds on 4G in both DC and Baltimore, though 4G is DC is much more spotty than in Baltimore.
My 3G speeds suck, but are close to the 1mb range typically.
I would be VERY hard pressed to leave Sprint.
Verizon is WAY to expensive, and has data caps
T-Mobile is cheaper, but has no batter coverage than Sprint, AND throttles data
AT&T? forget about it!
In reality, unless I am willing to shell out a bunch more $$, and live with data caps, I feel I would be hard pressed to do better than Sprint
I live in Salt Lake and Sprint has as good a service as Verizon.
AT&T is garbage. I moved down here for school from Alaska where they were the best hands down. Tmo is about the same. With roam control to get Verizon when I travel somewhere Sprint sucks there just isn't any reason to switch. My 4G speeds here are 4-5 mbps. 3G is about the same as AT&T.

When you actually go and download something are you really hitting those speeds? For Instance I Have Clear internet at home and Speed Test Says I'm getting anywhere from 2 to 6 MBps but never hit that the most ill get is about 400 to 700KB/s.

Because you are probably misreading the results. 2Mbs - 6Mbs translates into 250-750 kBs downloads. The b lower or upper case makes a big difference by a facto of 8.

Read my post I said uppercase B I said 2MBps which is 2MB/s. That's why I hate clear it says I'm getting 2 to 6 MB/s yet when I download I'm only getting slower speeds like you said 250 to 750 kBs

well it may be misreading but misreading and actual performance are two different things why isn't it downloading at the correct speeds this is what i'm talking about because when i visit my fathers place on his wifi i'm hitting MB/s not Mb/s.

Interesting Fact about 4G LTE

Apparently if you have 4G in a very low population area where there's only a few people hooked up to 4G and not a few thousand, you can get an upwards of 100GIGS download speed and 75GIGs upload per second! With 4G LTE you can get an upwards of 300Gigs. But whos ever going to have their own personal 4G tower? =p
I read about this in an article of how 4G and 4G LTE works.
I dont know if they where full of bs or not but it sounds likely.. If no ones taking up the bandwidth, then whats stoping you from using it?
Edit:
-facepalm- Didnt see the LTE discussion.. Please delete

Nope real LTE is 100 Mbps not what we get in the real world

Why would a cellular company spend that kind of money to put in a 4G LTE in such a rural area anyways?
Never mind
I didn't know u can get up to gigabyte. Last time I check it only up to megabyte. U must have ur byte wrong.

You can't, internet speed is measured in bits, not bytes. But as for true 4G, 100megabits for mobile internet connections, 1gigabits for home connections if i remember correctly.
Company's can get up to 1 terabyte of download speed, but none of US are that rich. Anyways what I was saying is we get low speeds due to mass usage. A ton of people for 1 tower. The article may be off. But same principle less use more speed.

So with all this 4G lte talk will things truly get better?

I'm not trolling just getting tired of sprints crapy speeds.
This evening I have made a conclusion: at 2 in the morning I have decent speeds. they're around 1.5 mb. I used to get this all the time. Anyways it seems that there are not many people using the network at 2 am. If I get dial up speeds during the day due to congestion won't I still have the same congestion issuer on this 4G lte, that I am probably not going to see for years anyways?

I once hated sprint I had speeds of 0.3 mbps speeds. Wait it out lte is a blessing it's fast and unlimited. My friend got verizon and scared to use his phone for fear of going over his data limit lol . I almost went back to T-Mobile but lte came on and I get it everywhere in town and the surrounding cities. I use to average 2gigs a month before lte, now
I use about 30 gigs lol lte make you use your phone alot I download roms, movies from frostwire and tether to play xboxlive and it only take 5minutes to download a 1 gig movie sometimes quicker. WAIT YOU WON'T BE SORRY.

Its jerks like that tether for xbox live that make it lag so crappy in multiplayer. Cant you just get internet where you live?

If your city is getting 4G LTE soon then it will definitely get better. In Atlanta I get 4G everywhere I go so I rarely see the 3g icon pop up on my phone. And yes it is fast!

Network Vision isn't just about LTE. It's an entire overhaul of the whole network. That includes switching from overloaded T1 lines to either fiber or microwave-based back haul (depending on the tower's location). The new back haul will be much better at handling the data load, so overcrowded towers shouldn't be an issue anymore.
And for info on when you can expect your market's Network Vision upgrades, check out www.s4gru.com.
