Blurry screen with MHL to HDMI - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I bought the more expensive mhl cable and when I connect to any TV at all when I stream nextflix or play any movie the quality is horrible. Its hard to even make out what's going on. Is there a rom or something to fix this?

try and stream a hq quality youtube video and see what pic is like. ive noticed most time trying stream netflix the quality of netflix is causing it to give bad pic.

I tried it. It looks good only with HQ YouTube. Is there anyway to get normal streaming videos or Netflix to look good. I saw a YouTube video were a guys gs2 looked perfect with all streaming

well there are some hd movies on netflix or a movie from market will both look good idk about if there way get reg netflix to look good i havent seen it done.

a lot of shows on the the netflix app is like 480p at best thats why when shown on your 720p-1080p tv it would look very uhh.. bad. You probably need to find shows and movies at higher resolution for it to look crisp.

Well it definitely isn't showing in 480 . Its so horrible I can't even make out faces. There has to be something wrong. Cause the cable is useless

obviously if viewing hq youtube videos produces a good pic then the problem lies within the netflix app itself and its lower quality being streamed. the cable is serving its purpose you just need to stream hd quality video

netflix sucks on my phone
I notice this as well and if you look very closely the same distortion can be seen on the phone as well. I hope we get a better netflix app. I can't believe my wii gets better picture than this great phone. This totally sucks.

Netflix just needs to get it together and make there **** all hd...no reason y I should have to watch low quality picture on phone or streaming on my flat screen

It has nothing to do with this or your NHL HDMI converter. Its more then likely the sync issue between your TV and output of signal from your phone. I can almost assume your outputting to a plasma? Which has a higher refresh rate then a LCD has, this is the problem. Your phone can't satisfy the output request of the plasma, in other words it can't keep up. On a LCD it would look pretty good.

I believe his "blurriness" is referring to the resolution and not the refresh rate. The refresh rate translate to the smoothness and clarity of movements on the screen. I can see what you think he meant by the blurriness, but ultimately, the resolution on netflix is too low to be projected with clarity on a 1080 lcd/plasma screen.
and damn 4.5 years on here with no thanks.. here is one.

+1 - Teo032, there's your thanks.
Anyway, Netflix automaticly cuts the quality down if its not streaming on wifi
Remember when Netflix was first released, it was only to a few phones. The dev masters had to develop work arounds and hacks to get the apk to work. Soon Netflix caved (so we think) and made it available to the masses. You don't think the engineering that went into the final development of the app will prevent total streaming from phone to TV? The Netflix apk is for personal use, for your personal phone, not for streaming to some capture software to be pirated off of some torrent web site. Just put yourself in their shoes. To keeps the deals they made with the production companies, that had to appease them somehow. You can't stream HD quality content from your Netflix app on your phone to any TV out there, no matter if its LCD or plasma. They don't want you to. Its only intended to be viewed from your phone.

People pay Monthly for there Netflix services...you can stream from ps3 to your TV why would it matter that your deciding to use your phone? Either way your paying for the service...bottom line is Netflix is primarily low quality movies...
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App

ps3 requires a TV, same thing with xbox360. You needs a TV to view Netflix, Hulu+ with game consoles. That's a given. But your smartphone already has a viewable screen. No need to attach any TV. So, they can purposely lower the quality. One of the MAJOR concerns with the movie (old school) studios is piracy. They flawed it from the get go. INTENTIONALLY!
Believe you me! I'll be watching "The Human Centipede" from Netflix on my HD 70" 240hts LCD TV from my phone RIGHT NOW if it can be done. With good quality.
Sorry, but it can't be done.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

Nope I tried on 2 LCD TVs. And no the picture on my phone will always look great while the TV is unviewable. And I can have a megavideo movie playing on my phone that looks excellent when the TV quality is still horrible as well. Is there any app out that may help this problem?

[Q] 1080p output from HDMI?

Hey guys I have been using the GN with 720p for a while and it's fine an all but I want to try and get 1080p output, is this possible?
I have been using the Samsung G2 MHL cables.
Thanks in advance.
Only if you play movies in 1080p i think. Not the homescreen itself.
Where do you guys get movies in 1080p for phones? Legally of course
Sent from my iPad 3G using Tapatalk
Depending on where you live, you could use something like MakeMKV to rip your BluRays (in sane parts of the world that would fall under fair use, in other parts the MPAA would track you down and beat you with your own entrails for causing millions of dollars in losses by watching a movie you bought on a device for which it was not intended).
However, since the MHL adapter mirrors the screen I highly doubt you'll get anything more or less than 720p without going through an upscaler which would kind of defeat the purpose.

If you just want a short for testing or demonstration, download a few official Angry Birds shorts off youtube with some extra programs . They are available in 1080p MP4 versions. I have a few of them on my phone.

hdmi adapter UK

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a good (cheap) hdmi adapter?
Cheers...

After over a week now, i will take that as a no?

Sorry, do you want a good one or a cheap one?
Both together is nearly impossible, but you are lucky!
We have a priceworthy and good MHL-adaptare (which i think yopu need): http://goo.gl/aD8T7
Shipping to UK is 4€ extra btw.
I got the samsung one from amazon at 13 euros. Decent enough but no HD video. Not with the somesung one or any other adapter i tried. Just keeps the Phones resolution. Fun to play games and maybe a movie though

that's for £15 and claimed to be official. Took almost a week to deliver but worked without fault. Going by few reviews of "cheap" adapters, it seemed hit n miss thingy. Thought price is in middle for something genuine.
I can't vouch for the quality of this as I'm waiting for mine to be delivered (only ordered it this morning), but for a tenner I'm not complaining...

Just got ICS on my phone and tried the HDMI adapter. It seems that it has better quality with ICS. Don't know if it upscales the resolution but it seems clearer.
edit: So the output is 1080p but the upscaling isn't always the best. especially in games where the downloades files are for 800x480. In movies and photos it works great though.

Decided at that price it just wasn't worth saving a couple of quid to get one that might work but likely have worse build quality.
Also ordered a HDMI to DVI cable from there for a stupidly low price of £2..
What's the actual conclusion on the SGS2s HDMI out? I've seen scattered reports of some people getting full 1080p out, others can't get any higher than the native 480x800. Then there's the Video Player app designed specifically for HD playback.
I'm getting 1080 with ICS but only on Videoplayback.
Tried several apps to resize the density for "office use" - everytime i had to reflash...

Used to be 480p but in ICS works like a charm. BUT the app you are running has to be in HD or the phone upscales it a bit but not an actual HD quality. In movies it rocks.

To me MX player works perfect, no problems with the stock samsung player.
Anyway even while the phone upscales the picture if you are at a big screen from the right distance you do not see bad quality. It is actually more than good. In photo gallery the quality is great, same on videos with any player. Only problem? Games. cause the downloaded files are for 800x480 which is low resolution if plagged on a 1080p tv.

Video resolution is independent of the phones native screen resolution. If the phone is 480*800 and the video is 1920*1080, then provided the media player can output 1080, and the tv being outputted to can display 1080, then the video will be 1080.

What if say the video is 720p and your screen only goes up to 720p
My 22" monitor can't do 1080i so I appear to be stuck at 720x480
I got this one from Amazon for £6.99 and a HDMI cable for £2.25, I've only tried it with my TV (which can only do up to 1080i) and I get 1080i on it, no problems at all.
I haven't tried it with my monitor yet (I got it mainly to watch films on my TV without having to burn any disks/buy a NAS or anything) but I can try it to see the 1080p output if requested.
From what I understood it doesn't support 1080p

mhl to hdmi adapter

Just bought 2 from Mertiline... i'm new here and cannot post link so here's product code #0005278. Price is 9.99 but if you buy 2 you'll get at 8.50 each. They're working good, i've just watch 720p video that i took with my T989D and quality is very nice.
That's cool. Im thinking of getting one too. Didn't know they were so reasonable.

Im using the samsung one..really great quality. was $20.00 @ frys i think?..read somewhere that some third party MHL adapters messed the phone up so i decided to use the factory recommended one:good:
i remember seeing the mertiline deal...was about to jump on it, until i realize it doesn't allow me to plug in the charger. I think I'll be ordering one from monoprince that adds an inline USB charging port. But good to see the video quality is good via the converter.

Sorry for the delay, i could not say is comparable to HDMI with your laptop but it's still very nice to watch. I tried youtube videos, WMV, AVI, and 720P MKV Videos without problem,...You can notice some small blur when there.s a lot of movements in the videos. Maybe the Original Samsung Adapter is better than this one, i don't know i don't have one in my hand to compare...

Did you try to reboot while it is plugged ?
I bought the cheapest one I could find for like $5 and it works great. The adapter doesn't seem to work with any of the JellyBean roms, just ICS and lower if that helps.
whenever i use my sgs2 with a MHL adapter the phone goes into 'auto rotation out of control mode' when i switch inputs on the target device. i'm sure it has something to do with it losing HDMI sync, but i've never seen a fix for it which is so damn annoying.
other than that it's pretty nifty.

Is anyone else's Netflix outputting in 4:3 format? (MHL Adaptor)

I'm pretty sure my Evo3D outputted in 720p.
Youtube displays in 16:9, native video player displays in 16:9, Other programs all display correctly.
Even the Netflix initial load screen displays correctly, just the video stream itself.
Netflix denies any problem with their app...

Hi, I'm wondering if you provide support for the Android App?
49 minutes ago You
I'm having an issue with my MHL cable (Phone to TV) It seems Netflix is outputting all the video in a 4:3 squished format, while Youtube, and every other video player on my phone is displaying 16:9 HD properly.

The quality is fine, it's that the video is in the "old" square format. It displays fine on the phone itself (say, The Walking Dead for example). On the phone screen it is playing in HD/widescreen. However the output to the TV is squished. It's not the MHL cable, as youtube, videos on my phone through the built in player, other streaming apps are all displaying the TV output in HD.

That has something to do with the connection now the when I say that I am not saying there is anything wrong with it what so ever. what I mean is that the netflix app takes more memorie and more speed than YOU tube does so the best people to contact would be the Manufactuer of the Television they would be able to walk you threw the step on fixing that picture with Netflix. it would have to do with some of the settings Now If you tell e the manufactuerer of your TV I can get you that number for you .. they only give us so many steps with each devices and connection is not one of them when it comes to connecting one device to another. and I don't want to walk you threw any steps that might damage either devise...
35 minutes ago You
Hmm, ok. Considering all other apps are working fine, I'm more inclined to think it's a Netflix issue. Is there an e-mail address for the guys/gals that make the android app? I understand this isn't a topic that's probably asked routinely, and it's probably something that happened with some update. It's worked on other phones fine in the past, so I know it normally does work, just seems to be broken in this "update." There's not really a way to "report" the issue, so I'm wondering if there's a method of contacting that team to report the issue/get further assistance...

the people that issue the App to your phone would be the Manufacter of the phone all we issue is the content on the app. Have you tried any trouble shooting steps to try to fix it ?

Alrighty, I've checked with my support and the Android Netflix App is definitely something supported by Netflix and offered on the Google Play Market to be played on Android devices; It's pretty cool that you have an adapter to use your TV as a second screen, I'd love to be able to do that! That adapter isn't something created by Netflix, so what you'll want to do to make that work, is contact the manufacturer of the adapter, so they can take a look into that snag and get that working asap!
21 minutes ago You
It's not the adaptor... Is there a way to send a pic? The initial screen (The red "Netflix" screen) takes up the width of the TV (widescreen) and once the video starts its squished. The picture(s) would demonstrate this much better... A picture's worth a thousand words right?
18 minutes ago Netflix Katie
I totally understand what you're trying to say here and if the app was designed to specifically work with that adapater, we could definitely help troubleshoot this little snag; the adapter isn't something that we created or support, so we aren't able to properly troubleshoot and get that working
16 minutes ago You
I understand that, however the pics kind of "prove" that the adaptor IS working... as the Netflix app displays in widescreen HD, until the video starts streaming. I'm ruling out the variables here.... It's kind of Put-Off-Ish to just "cross your arms" and say "there's nothing wrong here, must be "that other thing's" fault. Know what I mean? If the 6 or so other streaming video providers can do it right, they why should I pay for a service that won't even be OPEN to the idea that THEIR app may be at fault. Instead I get a canned response that says "Nope, it's basically your fault (my hardware's fault) when it functions properly with every other app.

Yeah there's a problem with my adaptor all right
I noticed the exact same thing. And exactly as you have I also proved to myself that it's not my tv or my ability to manage the aspect and overscan controls on the several different tv's and monitors I tried.
I still have my evolte and the STANDARD mhl adapters that fit thatn and the same nominal version of netflix for android, playing the same movie, on the same tvs (plural) displays fine.
It still might be the adapter or the OS doing something funny that confuses netflix even though other apps work, except the netflix splash and search & info screens blow that out.
Thanks for caring Netflix. I'll remember that as soon as any other service starts to compete. I already hate that Netflix forces me to install silverlight on windows, and that I simply can't use linux at all period. Jerks.

I just downloaded that, and not one of the shows I watch work... I did find one episode and the quality was worse than 360p.
I don't mind paying for a service... just make the ****ing service WORK. 95% of tje time Netflix works. Im not even upset that it doesnt work as its an easily remedied problem. My issue is "Katie" basically blaming my hardware for something "she" doesnt even understand. ATLEAST forward me to somebody else that can actually look into it.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using Tapatalk 2
it's not you. It's across mutliple devices, not just the GN2. It's in the app itself.
I have that issue on my GN2. I was watching Tekzilla, and they were doing a review on a Samsung TV and had a GS3 connected to it, and it did the same thing.
I tried the Netflix on my ASUS Transformer Infinity Pad (TF700T), and it was playing properly. It's on Android 4.1.1, which is also same Android version I currently run my GN2; just deoxedized. It's possible it could be the hardware with the HML and the code needs to be adjusted accordingly. The TF700T uses a microHDMI cable. Thus, it's the only difference I know about. It's possible since I've seen it on both the GN2 and GS3, it could be something with TouchWiz.
I'm not surprised about the response you got from Netflix. It's not like customer support is usually anyone that has any significant technically training. It's all about the scripts they have to read off. I've gotten it from several different services, and not uncommon. Sometimes you just have to be rude and tell them what you've done and you're beyond the scripts so you can get to tech support instead of customer service.
I got an MHL adapter for my evo 3d so I could stream Netflix to my LG tv. Same thing, everything looks great aside from Netflix. Very frustrating.
same thing happens with dish anywhere app
I have a gs3 and have encountered this problem as well. I feel like it would help in our troubleshooting if I let you guys know that the same problem you are describing with netflix happens when I use the dish anywhere app with the adapter. When i use the hbo go app the aspect ratio is fine on the tv. Youtube works also for me. So far its just netflix and dishanywhere that dont work correctly for me. When viewing video on dish anywhere on my phone there are overlays that show up when I press the menu button or just press the screen. These overlays are used to do things like change the channel or view program descriptions. When these menus or overlays are in front of the video on my phone they do not show on the tv, only the video is visible on my hd tv. Its so frustrating because it would be such an easy fix if my tv could properly adjust the video coming in. unfortunately the usual screen formatting presets do not fix the problem. Now im looking to purchase that samsung allshare cast dongle thing which looks great but is about 80 bucks. Wonder if the problem would still exist once I try netflix or dishanywhere on it. Anyways hope somebody can find a fix or a workaround cause I sure havnt yet.
INSTALL THE APP 'ORIENTATION CONTROL' AND FORCE A LANSCAPE VIEW. fixed the issue for dish anywhere. Havnt tried it for netflix yet but ill bet it fixes it too. I hope it works for yall cuz I am SO happy about it fixing my shiz. Good luck

Ok so that app did nothing towards fixing this problem. Only a low res video feed was displayed correctly. Soon as I put it on HQ (HIGH QUALITY) the problem resurfaces. And I remember someone saying only low res video was displayed correctly on their hbo go so really I have made no progress. Sucks but im back to square 1.

I have both an original 5 pin mhl with adapter and a new 11 pin adapter... Both with the same issue. One is sammy and another is a random brand with mhl built into the hdmi cable itself...

Its not because of the cord or your phone, it's because of the television.
I have an Mhl Hd adapter and I used my phone on a Philips television and Netflix was full screen.
Then I went into my room and connected it to my smaller television, went to 4:3 (with black bars on the sides of playback).
It may even be because of your television format?

It works fine on an evolte on 5 different tv's and monitors.
It fails the same way on my gn2 on the same 5 tv's and monitors.
And as has been pointed out already many times, other apps work fine and even the menu screens in netflix work fine.
It IS the app, but only ON certain hardware, and the insulting theory that no one understands the mysteries of the aspect and zoom settings on their tvs and monitors has been disproved many times over.

I've tried it on 3 different brands/sizes of LCD TVs and they all output Netflix in 4:3. :/

I had exactly same problem with netflix and smart dock. The solution with smart dock is to connect standard usb mouse to smart dock and netflix starts output in correct 16:9 aspect ratio. It has to be some problem wirh netflix app because you tube outputs in correct ratio with and without mouse attached.

On the contrary, I think there is definitely something to do with the phone/tablet and its interaction with the Netflix app.
On my wife's GT-i9100 international (SGS2) Netflix displays only 4:3 (when playing Netflix video, it's 16:9 for other uses).
However, with the same episode, Netflix apk, WiFi network, MHL adapter and TV, but using my LG E975k (Optimus G) as the source it displays 16:9 while playing Netflix Video.
Edit: Both i9100 and E975k are running Android 4.1.2, so "no" difference there either.

[Q] Apect ratio on old 4:3 tube tv with fire tv

Hi, I try to keep my old 4: 3 tube working with a fire tv. For this I use an HDMI 2 AV converter, because the tube does not. have hdmi The image quality quite well. Only problem is the image format/aspect ratio. The content is streched over the whole screen. In 16: 9 movies the top and bottom black bars are missing and 4: 3 series are shown as a square withe black bars left and right. Looks a little bit strange on a 4:3-tv . Does anyone have any idea or experience, whether you can change this somehow? On the old tv itself is not possible.
Purchase of a new current TVs in this case is incidentally not an option because it is an heirloom of my wife's grandmother. Must therefore not be proposed.
Thanks
They say it's cheaper to keep her, understood. Use old tv as tv stand for New tv. Problem solved. Far easier for Jesus to. Feed many with bread and fish than to get good viewing on old tv.

It still doesn't allow a 4:3 aspect ratio. 720p or 480p is going to look just as wonky as 1080p.
a device like this might work for you. I have one working on an old boob tube with a Logitech Revue. Picture is adequate but your mileage may vary.

Hi, I've allready solved the problem. I've showed my wife, how unsharp the old tube is compared to the lcd of my notebook. That was the missing argument to convince her, that a new tv is the far better solution . Therefor I got with rp201's suggestion but without the tv-stand .
@tekweezle: thats exactly the device I use to get the fire tv to my old tv.
