Best of the inexpensive MHL adapters - Galaxy S II Accessories

I see a lot of these on Amazon. Does anyone have a preference or know of a better brand (of the 3rd party type).
I've seen this one mentioned before:

I have the SGS2 world version (GT-I9100). Does the micro-USB connector on the bottom align up with all the other variants of this phone (Tmo, AT&T, Sprint..ect)? Do all of those have the plug in the same place?
EDIT sorry the pic is so big. I didn't know that before I posted...
EDIT #2 Reading a quick review of the Menotek adapter on Amazon, one of the complaints was its limitation of 720p output. Is that true? Cant the SGS2 output in 1080p?

Personally i'd just buy the cheapest MHL adaptor you can find. It's just a cable so why pay a fortune for it.

It's not just a cable -- there are some electronics inside (that's why they need a charger input).

Have you ordered one yet? I'd be interested in knowing which is the best option and weather there's any reason to avoid the really cheap ones?

gonna grab myself a cheap one of these adaptors and get my emulator groove on, on the big screen.. though god knows how gba games are going to look at 32inches...probably not great.

No.is only cable.

I got official samsung and it is working fine

I have the first one, if your phone is not in airplane mode the screen on your tv often goes completely black. You have to reconnect the mhl cable to display the screen on your tv again. Annoying when watching videos but putting your phone into airplane mode fixes this completely.
Quality is great, downloading a movie and watching it looks incredible, full HD. However if you plan on watching youtube videos on your TV, I suggest you download the app TubeMate, it allows you to stream YT videos in a much higher quality than the standard app.

I have used one of these but not branded.
But I am not so sure about what RCP is for as it is wired and provides no additional gadget for "remote control".
And it's only $13 elsewhere.

MHL Adaptor
I bought one a few days ago from Amazon.co.uk, offical Samsung for £14.99 with free delivery, bargain in my opinion.
You have to connect the Samsung charger to power it (although i haven't tested it without the charger to see if it still works). The phone battery seems to drain really fast with the MHL outputting via HDMI, and gets a little warm also, both cores doing their bit no doubt.
Have to say i'm very happy with, and the CEC function (if your tv supports it) is the icing on the cake. With it, you can use your tv's remote (or any ALL in One as in my case [Logitech]) to control the phone navigation, you can play games using the remotes d-pad, and use it to click on items in the menu, or on the internet, rewind, pause and fast forward videos.
I too had the screen blacking out on me as one person mentioned earlier, espcially when playing games, I'll try and see what flight mode does for it, but my conclusions where a less than perfect HDMI cable, as when i tested it on my brothers tv it worked flawlessly without a single blackout (Using a HDMI cable supplied with his SKY+ box).

Might have to buy one of these but i'm still looking for a solution to sending audio NOT over the HDMI since I don't have a HDMI input on my monitors, only DVI. Either over analogue 3.5mm out or bluetooth would be fine!
I think the reason it drains the battery still is because it is using the data pins to send the video. For fast charge these pins would usually be shorted and you can't have both. (That's my understanding anyway!)

I have bought on ebay 1 cable mhl + 1 cable micro usb --> USB femal for only 15€
But the max resolution of mhl is 720p

Cheap MHL cable
I bought my MHL cable from deal extreme for around $13.00. Not only did i get a samsung branded (probably fake) MHL cable, it came with a USB OTG cable and a USB retractable cable too. So far, all 3 seems to work fine and not too expensive

Thanks.

I actually did by the cheapest MHL adapter I could find on ebay and it works like a charm. Cost me around 6 € including shipping.

hi guys.
why cant we use the camera app when using the MHL function?...is it a hardware restriction?...i was using cm9 and when i start the camera with the adapter plugged in then close the camera app ,for a second the camera screen shows up on the tv.....if its hardware restricted then it would not do that at all...

on my mhl cable only outputs 1080i,is it adaptors fault?

Epic touch 4G HDMI dock question

Is there a dock for the epic touch 4G which can do HDMI out ? I have seen some which say charge and sync but what if I attached the mhl adapter for HDMI out to the back of the charger where I am supposed plug in the charge or USB cable ?
I want some thing nice to put the phone in when I do HDMI out. I figure I could leave the HDMI cord plugged into the dock and that way whenever I put it on the dock and go straight to HDMI mount. Works well because the mhl adapter has a charger cable
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
not exactly sure what u are asking but i believe if you look at mhl adapters they should have a port for the charger on the side. this way its sends hdmi out and charge at same time but dont quote me on that . good luck.

Well some docks have a slot for you to plug a micro sd slot like for a wall charger or a USB adapter to connect to a of or charge.
My idea is connect the HDMI out cord to that slot on a dock and hook into the tv. The HDMI adapter has a seperate slot to hook up the phone charger so the phone can still be powered.
Perhaps we could even then take the USB charge cable and attatch it to a pc and mount etc if needed

I have an mhl adapter. It has a micro usb on the side for charging. in order for it to work with a non mhl TV you have to plug the charger in. Newer TVs can charge via hdmi. I plugged the mhl into my stereo receiver and it charges but my older JVC LCD requires the charging cable

Doubt it, as I've tried connecting phone to computer for a simple file transfer but it would not see the data connection. Removing the dock from the equation worked which makes me believe that dock forces the charge-only mode. I do also have hdmi/mhl adapter but too lazy to dig it out and test it
HDMI dock
Ok. So I got a dock off amazon to try this out and it does work. I recorded a video to show it on you tube too.
I took my MHL cable with usb power to side and plugged the micro usb that would normally go into the phone into the back of the dock where the power goes. Put in phone and bam there it goes. Now if only I could find a way to disable the screen while mirroring. It slowly drains the battery even with extra power. Now to hook up bluetooth controller and play old school games
PS. I noticed i actually do gain a charge when my phone is in airplane mode with wifi on. Could just be my poor signal here causing drain.
Here's a link to the dock I'm using.

Does anyone know of any docks out there that fit an Epic 4G Touch with 3200 mAh battery (like the Seidio BACY32SSEPT-BK, sorry I cannot post link since I have less than 8 posts).
Thank you!
HDMI Dock
Cant post a link to an hdmi dock for the e4gt but I purchased one on ebay made by KiDigi. It works well but I wish the screen would shut off when outputting hdmi instead of mirroring.
It's likely that the micro usb port on the side of the dock is only wired for power and has no data capacity.

do i have to get the dock in order to be able to play the hdmi from my phone to my tv or can i just get a mhl adapter?
You only need the mhl cable. Mono price had then for cheaper. Then you plug your phone charger into the side of mhl cable. Then hdmi to TV and adapter.

Youtube Clip
I am an idiot that cant seem to get the youtube video link to work but I have a video of it
They have tons online ranging from $4.99 to $15.99. Some have charging ports, some don't.
Can you do a test to see if your battery slowly depletes while using it AND a charging cable? Some say that even when charging the same time, the Nexus screen and video out eats too much power for the USB charger to keep up with.
So as a test, could you hook it up with power and output to your TV for like an hour (maybe a movie) and see if the battery % is less, the same, or more then before you started.
There's a Thanks in it! Plus I'm thinking of buying one but there aren't enough tests to prove it's the USB Wall Charger, MLH Adapter, or phone that is the problem.
Also - That link is absolutely atrocious.
sorry about the youtube link. I tried a bunch of different things, all failed. Mine does have the charging port. I will test the charging functionality tonight. I tell you what, the one Youtube video that I watched with it looked great and I haven't found anything that isnt mirrored yet
I will say this, I picked this one because it was one of the ones being used at the MHL booth at CES
Can you supply a link to it on amazon please? Thanks.

I ran into this with the 700mA BlackBerry charger by my home theater, but I used a generic 1000mA charger with no problems (search Amazon for B005F9W6DU to find my model). I believe that the stock Samsung charger is also 700mA.
EDIT: Just for kicks I hooked my phone up to my HP power supply via a cannibalized USB cable. I measured just shy of 1000mA when plugged in directly. When plugged into the MHL adapter I was just north of 400mA. I'll have to explore more, but what I don't understand is how I was able to play a movie and not lose any charge at that charge rate. I suspect the voltage of the cheap-o USB adapter may be a bit on the high side, allowing a faster charge over the same current (with a non-zero risk) but that would require investigation.
Yea I think this is the cause of the confusion. The standard charger is slow. Seems it can't keep up with charging while using the phone. I have TONS of chargers because I'm an IT admin that services hotels. They always have a box of left over goodies behind the front desk (good tip to know). They are always happy to get rid of that crap. I always find some awesome universal chargers, backup batteries, laptop chargers, cell phone accessories, etc left behind by guests.
Good to know it'll work with the right equipment.

More good advice. I have a pair of APC UPB10 batteries because I can't stand the thought of buying spare batteries (and custom chargers) for every phone and Bluetooth device I own. With 10,000mAH it's enough to last me when I'm away from a power source, plus with the GN I don't need to worry about spare batteries making NFC more painful to use.

Samsung in-box AC charger is 1A. Their DC car charger is .7A. I picked up the Samsung OEM MHL (actual Samsung, not a fake) dongle with the OEM Samsung charger, it still drains a bit when in use. Since it's just a bit, the phone naturally gets blazing hot.
The official MHL outputs at 720p (having used two different MHL kits, it seems that's the phone's output most of the time), unless I'm playing a 1080i/p movie, where it switches output to 1080p. Does the one you have do the same or does it up-convert to 1080p all the time?

The cable works. If you have a use of connecting your phone to the TV, then its worth it. If not, then it isn't. You can check plenty of videos on YouTube to see the cable in action with our phone.
Did anyone try flash videos directly from a website? Youtube and videos from file work fine but when I try playing a flash video through a site, the video keeps flickering. I told the seller and got another one shipped. Same thing though. Wondering if I got two bad products or if this just happens with flash.

Looking for a micro usb to rca adapter for tv

Hey everyone, I unfortunately don't have an HDTV, so I can't use an MHL adapter. So can anybody recommend to me a good micro USB to RCA adapter that I can use on a TV?
Ummm wow. Uh you can pick up a MHL adapter and maybe try to convert HDMI to VGA (analog signal) then VGA to RCA.
The HDMI to VGA convert the signal from digital to analog required for what your looking to do.
I suggest monoprice for the adapters because it may not work. I think the phone requires some kind of communication from the TV before it will output at all.
Maybe go to radio shack and ask them. They work off commission and usually let you try the parts in the store before you buy it.

But I would still like some suggestions on what I could use through the micro usb
Please don't order that you are wasting your money, the phone doesn't support analog out of the headphone jack. Also you can't convert a digital picture to analog via cables. There is no way to go from HDMI to RCA without expensive conversion in which case you should just buy a HD TV.
Damn not the news I was hoping for, thanks though for the insight!
Search Amazon for B0047PDBP0, you've looking for an HDMI to composite (not component) video converter. However, even a cheap one is ~$50 and the quality won't be great even with a good one. You may be better off putting that $50 towards an HDTV. Amazon also has a few cheap 720p models in the $100-150 range.
Really??????

Without d/a conversion the signal is still digital and not analog regardless of the plug(s) the adapter changes the HDMI cable into. If your screen supports a digital input, then it might work, but I doubt it does.

Questions about HDMI dock

First of all, I already ordered original Samsung MHL adapter, as it's much cheaper, and I will use it from time to time. I also got the audio dock for charging, and not use the usb. And ordered original Samsung OTG adapter.
Now for my questions, from what I know, the HDMI dock can charge, and use HDMI to connect to TV, but it's limited to videos only? or not?
and second question, what if I connect OTG adapter to the microUSB on the dock? will it work? or it same limited port, like in MHL adapter?
What, no buddy here have the HDMI dock?

I read something somewhere that running pre-4.0.4 stock would actually allow the HDMI dock to function as a mirror. I didn't have this with AOKP 4.0.3 however. My phone is limited to just video (Currently 4.0.4 AOKP). I'd love it if I had the option to use the dock for mirroring.
The OTG adapter shouldn't work with the USB port, as it's limited to charging, no data. Says so in the manual for the dock.
Ohh, I just not sure if to cancel the order of MHL adapter, sure it's more handy, and small, so if I go to a friend, I can get the adapter with me...
The thing is, that here: http://www.droid-life.com/2012/03/23/review-samsung-galaxy-nexus-hdmi-portrait-desktop-dock/
according to manual it say:

So they recommend to update the ROM to thelatest, but they also say it limited to video only. on other hand, pre 4.0.4....yes you guess it, there was no any dock settings in the ROM, but it worked just like the much cheaper MHL adapter, I already spent some cash on the Pogo Dock, so my microUSB stay still ,
I know it more good looking with the dock, but if it really limited, then **** Samsung.
P.S, can anybody here comment on latest stock 4.0.4? is there same limitation to video only? because, you see, I have HTPC in one room, and watch movies and other stuff with it, so spent money on some sheet I may use from time to time, is stupid, as the Pogo Dock at least save my microUSB port, and even have line out with an option to use optical cable, but the HDMI dock, only can show videos, so why the **** I need it then ? I do see it good with emulators if I not at hotel or something, but if MHL adapter can mirror, and it cost much much less, why buy that dock? also some aftermarket HDMI docks can mirror the screen, like that:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Gal...s_Adapters&hash=item2ebd72c665#ht_2529wt_1859
hell, that thing, can charge, sync, and mirror hdmi, and even can work with phone in a case, **** Samsung guys, aftermarket sometimes can be over 9000 times better that original, to bad there no pogo aftermarket one.
Bump
I have both OEM OTG adapter and MHL adapter for my GNex. I am running IMM76K deodexed, zipaligned. I can view files from flash drive, connect external drive, or do almost anything you can do with a computer using OTG adapter. And I can mirror phone on TV w/ MHL adapter w/sound and everything.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
The thing is, that the phone recognize the dock as a different accessory, not like regular MHL adapter, but most people I asked, on 4.0.4 it not mirror .
anyway I ordered the MHL adapter, and OTG, original Samsung BTW, I will need them just in case, but that case both cost less then that crap dock, but I could not resist not to buy the pogo dock , I know it not cheap, but it a cheap price for working micoUSB port
PS, check Kidigi docks, they support MHL, and even can charge second battery, sync, charge, and fit a phone with a case on it.
I bought the official pogo desktop dock from the Play Store for my GSM Nexus with CM9 nightly on it.
The dock's micro USB port ONLY works for charging!
If you plug it into a computer's USB, it will charge but will not connect, manually even says not to plug it into the computer because it may damage the dock, says to use a charger.
So not sure if OTG will work or not.
I just opened the box. Plugged in a USB drive in the back of the dock, no power is being supplied to the drive. I am not using an OEM Samsung otg cable. If undock and plug in the USB drive straight tot the phone it world no problem.
I will try with a powered HD and ill experiment with mirroring and non video outputs
edit: the dock does work with the OEM extended battery (w/ no case), it's a little tight, but actually fits pretty good

SlimPort + v1.4 HDMI Cable w/ Ethernet

I've just received the Analogix SlimPort HDMI adapter (SP1003) for my Nexus 5 and it works fantastically with my short 1-2 metre HDMI cables.
However, if I try a 10 metre cable, the display cycles between on and off every few seconds.
Now, I'm not sure whether it's the length of the cable or if it's the cable's version. My shorter cables are most probably version 1.3 HDMI cables. The 10m one is 1.4 with ethernet.
I've read somewhere that HDMI cables with ethernet do not work with SlimPort. Is that correct? Should I order an older 1.3 version? I'm thinking 10m is a bit excessive anyway and I'll probably go for 3 to 5 metres this time anyway. But I didn't want to order one with ethernet and experience the same problem!
I have a 3m 1.4a HDMI cable and experience the exact same situation. Same happened with a MHL 1.0 adaptor I tried with SG Note 3, so I concluded the cable is just to long for a phone to provide signal. But I'm not sure about this.
I have a hdmi 1.4w/ethernet cable that I use with my slimport. About 2m I think. No problems.

I have been wanting to buy a longer hdmi cable for my Analogix SlimPort SP1003. After reading a couple posts, I'm not sure if a longer cable will work as well.
NEXUS 5
I don't suggest to use a cable longer that 2m.

If you don't mind me asking, from where did you pick up your Analogix SlimPort? It looks like it's only available from a 3rd party seller on Amazon for $50, and I can't find any other reputable sellers that still sell it for it's original $30 price (or preferably lower ). Thanks.
So I sent the 10m cable back and ordered the cheapest 3m cable I could find from Amazon UK here. It doesn't even say what version it is, so I assumed it was 1.3 without ethernet.
I got lucky as this cable works perfectly. No dropouts at all.

I got my adapter from Amazon UK here for around £20 ($30) as I live in the UK. I can't seem to find the same one on amazon.com. One of the cheaper ones might be just as good as the adapter is only passive anyway.
Anyone heard/tried Kanex SLIMPORT

Apparently it supports
Easily display and share your videos, photos, games and more from your Google Nexus 4, Nexus 5, and Nexus 7 to an HDTV with high resolutions up to 4K picture quality and full digital audio surround sound
Another MicroUSB to charge your device while its plugged in your device

Reading through their website they have some crappy editorial skills, so I'm not gonna trust them. Looks fishy.
