[Q] E4GT HDMI Mirroring - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Has anyone gotten hdmi mirroring or any hdmi output on the epic 4g touch? I bought the micro usb to hdmi adapter plugged it in and it did nothing, also searched for mirroring apps with no luck. Samsung mentions hdmi output for it in there specs on the e4gt. Does anyone know anything about it or gotten it to work?

Did you plug power into the adapter??

Yeah, it works great for me. Does need AC power to drive the high def.
I ordered the adapter that was recommended on these forums; can't recall the name but I can find out.
Which adapter do you have?

As long as you use TouchWiz it will just work. It NEEDS an AC adapter to power it, I don't think USB port on a computer will work. If it's plugged into the wall, the TV, and the phone, then you may need to try a different TV or monitor.

I have a cable
I have a HDMI to MicroUSB that I bought at Target.
When I plug it in, it doesn't work. This is a scam considering it was $20 and my phone needs to be plugged in for anything to work... LOL so learn from my mistake and don't buy a single cable. You need to buy the thing where you can plug your phone into the HDMI and power all at once. Kinda like this one (I think. I'm not responsible if you buy it and its total crap)

Thanks for the video, it is really cool.
When I had my G2x with micro HDMI out, I bought all kines of cables to plug it into the TV from the comfort of my bed, and I really only used once or twice.
Maybe in the future I'll buy it but I think it will end up in my cable's cabinet.

I think people who travel or game more will use it. I hook my phone up to hotel rooms to watch Netflix and my dish network programming/dvr. Gamers may want a bigger screen.

How does this play out with USB host mode in Android?
Do I need another adapter for host mode? Or can I use this one while I also have HDMI out?
http://www.amazon.com/Menotek-Adapt...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1325341220&sr=1-1
This one seems to be "certified" for the Galaxy Nexus and also has a charging port to use while doing HDMI output. Does the Samsung adapter come with this?
I'm most certainly interesred but I want more details before shelling out money, even if it's small money
Edit: Looked at the video and I see the USB port there. Still though, how does this play wtih USB host? Do I even need an adapter for that?
Using the HDMI adapter and playing games with a controller can only be done with a bluetooth controller? Is there any way I can use HDMI and a USB PS3/360 controller?
(using the PS3 wireless is not a option for me i cannot get the app and phone to work together)

to ppl with questions, i got the official samsung gs2 mhl adapter. its 11$.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/230721222527?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
works wonders. i am 4.0.2 stock.
it uses full hdmi. 1$ on ebay.
it has a charging port, but it shows plugged in as usb charger even when plugged into the wall. it only draws enough power to power keep the charge constant, that is your battery does not go down, nor does it go up. and no, you cannot connect usb host when watching in mhl mode. would have been cool, but doesnt work.
One more thing, apparently THE PHONE HAS TO BE PLUGGED IN FOR THE MHL ADAPTER TO WORK. So, unless you plug in the charger, the mhl adater wont give output.
i hope i answered all questions.
OMG I need me on of these. It's not a Amazon prime item so that mean I have to pay for shipping lol.
nice!

Wow. So emulator+wifi+bluetooth+mhl= dead phone. 500ma is not enough to keep the GN floating.
Seems like a huge oversight on Google's part or perhaps it's just a MHL limitation. I know data does not work, which is why people have to use BT. But 500ma, what a joke.
Can anyone else confirm this?
Awesome video and post, thanks!!
Does the MHL to HDMI work with Android Movies? I know on my stock Transformer TF101 HDMI out is blocked in Movies. ...worked fine for Netflix and others though.
As far as battery is concerned. Would it be possible to program the screen to turn off when viewing in HDMI and still view it on the TV? seems like this would cut battery consumption dramatically. If not you could set the screen brightness to as low as possible.
Thanks man! Gonna buy this ASAP

Battery drain seems to be corroborated here too:

What a downer.
Great minds think alike though:

So it looks like the only option is to use some sort of dual charging situation where one charges the MHL adapter and the other charges the phone via pogo.
Perhaps the native HDMI doc allows AC charging? I guess we will have to wait and see.

modding Atrix lapdock to charge other phones?

Ive since moved on from the atrix but kept the lapdock to see if i can use it for a hdmi monitor and charger. I now have the galaxy nexus and wanted try and use the lapdock with it. Im going to order the MHL adapter for the galaxy nexus to connect to the lapdock's hdmi with a female micro hdmi adapter. Ive read that the lapdock can receive HDMI input from other sources besides the atrix but will the lapdock accept HDMI source from a MHL adapter. Another problem is that in order for the Samsung MHL adapter to work it needs to be plugged in to a micro usb power source. I need to be able to use the micro usb from the lapdock if i want this set up to be portable.
i bought a micro usb extension and tried that but it doesnt charge galaxy nexus or Optimus P500. Unfortunately i sold my atrix before i got the cable so i cant test it with that but the micro usb extension charges all my phones fine when plugged into an AC adapter. So is it possible to mod the lapdock or micro hdmi cable to charge my other phones?
I can't speak for different phones made by different manufacturers (samsung, etc), but the atrix lapdock can be modified to work with other motorola weptop enabled phones. I am typing this on an atrix lapdock plugged into my Droid 4. I had to modify it when i bought it in order for it to work, but it was a simple 10 min job and it has been working well!
All I had to do was unscrew the cover of the hdmi/microusb ports, and flip over the connectors that were upside down for my use, and put it back together. A bit of shaving the plastic in the corners was necessary, but was not difficult. I am a happy user since this keyboard is a bit larger than the lapdock 100, and it was cheaper on craigslist than a lapdock 100.
Now I just need to see if anybody has managed to find any happy ways to hack/modify the atrix lapdock for greater functionality, like multitouch or scroll areas. If you have happened to see someone getting this to work, please do tell!

no need to mod!!! there are two powered usb ports on the back of the unit. when it senses hdmi, it turns on the usb ports and you can charge or power your usb device assuming 500ma is enough. not sure what it outputs, but it does charge a phone.
Where i can buy the lapdock charger?

Galaxy S III MHL Adapter Supports USB OTG--Work with GN?

The new MHL adapter for the Galaxy S III supports both HDMI and USB OTG simultaneously, according to this article:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/06/29/galaxy-s-iii-new-mhl-connector-also-enables-usb-on-go/
I'm wondering if this means it could be used for USB OTG with a flash drive while charging the phone at the same time--something that's impossible with current adapters and cables. And does it also work with the Galaxy Nexus? Does anyone happen to have the adapter and a GN to test this?

My friend has an S3 and I know the 5 pin MHL adapter we use doesn't work with his because of the pin configuration, so I would assume if he can't get HDMI out using the 5pin, we won't be able to get HDMI out using the 11pin. Of course I am only guessing, but it makes sense to my mind.
I don't see how it could work, to use the HDMI out you need the charger cable plugged in to the MHL adaptor. So where would the OTG cable go?

Looks to me like the standard S3 MHL adapter has a micro USB "charging port". Could be that it could also accept an external drive. I don't have the phone or the cable yet, so I can't test. Maybe somebody who has both could post results?
it's not actually a charging port, it's a power port because apparently it needs more power to output HDMI, i.e. if you don't have the charger plugged in to the vacant port, no HDMI.
Samsung does sell a bunch of dual head micro usb to usb cables.... so maybe you need one of those and they sell this: http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ET-R205UBEGSTA which says it allows you connect drives, keyboards, etc to S3's....
Yeah those work, I actually use this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-2...100-Note-i9220-Nexus-i9250-XOOM-/120894431890
or something similar, but you still can't use HDMI when you use those
you can however plug in keyboard, mouse, usb drive and anything else you want all at once which is cool

only MHL is affected by the pins, usb OTG is not affected by the new layout

Getting MHL/HDMI video out to work

I have both a genuine Samsung MHL adapter and the S2 mhl adapter with the 5pin to 11pin converter and I've seen both of these work on other phones.
However, I can't get my video out working on my S3. Both of them connect and bring up active charge and indicate onscreen that "HDMI cable connected". So I know the adapter and cable is being detected but no signal on HDTV. The HDMI cable is good as is TV and monitor I tested on and of course proper input is selected.
Now as far as I remember as soon as it is plugged in the video should automatically show up on HDTV screen...correct? No TV out setting has to be turned on as in past Galaxy correct?
Fyi..I have multiple S3's but currently only have one on hand...its a 747m with KyanROM on it... so not stock..it is rooted and has KT747 9-18 kernel as well.
I have a feeling its the rom(and I could easily test this if I had other phones but don't for a while).
So if both MHL adapters are confirmed working and both the HDMI cable and TV are working AND even the phone states that HDMI cable connected, then what is the issue with no video display?

Do you have the power plugged in? That is, a AC/DC charger to micro-USB cable plugged in to the micro-USB port on the adapter.
Should work automatically
I just received the Min-Suit 11-pin adapter sold on Amazon. Mine switches on automatically as soon as I plug in the adapter. Of course, to make it work, you should first plug a charging cable into the USB micro port on the adapter and you should connect an HDMI cable to the tv. Also, make sure you're selected the correct HDMI input on the tv. If you do all of that, the picture and sound should start up as soon as you plug in the cable.
Unless it was a mistake, your OP says you have s2 adapter. From my understanding, the pins are different on the s3 and will not work with the older adapters.
If you read closer Woody you will see that he says that he uses an old MHL adapter, WITH the 5 to 11 pin adapter
That should work. But I think your ROM is the guilty one...

Dont give up yet, I thought I had the same problem, but my ballistic case was preventing the MHL adapter from going all the way in. I took the phone out of the case and the adapter clicked in. Worked great on the TV, but best of all, worked in the truck via a down converter. Had to play with it to get in deep enough (kind of phone foreplay i guess:laugh to work, but it does.

You do not need root. All you need is the correct mhl adapter for the note 2 and make sure it's connected with the power adapter and it will work instantly. It's actually pretty cool.

you may need to get a 5pin to 11pin adapter. The GN2 has a 11pin port. And most HML adapters use 5pin ports.
No root required.

Monoprice HML stuff
And from what I've seen others post and seen on other sites, you'll going to spend in the $10 to $20US range for the equipment.
On a side note, I like that new cable monoprice has with both the mircoUSB and regular so you can plug into the phone and charger. That may actually not eat up juice or much of it In my setup, I run into the battery drain when doing WiFi tether and HML at the same time.
The video is something I did to show HML working and what not. I'm using the USB cable and charge that came with the phone. It's plugged into the monoprice HML adapter. The white thing adapter that is plugged into GN2 and HML adapter is plugged into is a 11pin to 5pin adapter.

would any of these adapters work? and i also just need the usb charging cable and an hdmi to hdmi cable right?
yes, they should work. Doesn't look like you need an 11pin adapter either.
Yes you will need a USB cable, USB charger and HDMI cable. You can just use the USB cable and charger that came with your phone. Just an FYI, the HML adapter will take some power to run, so your phone will charge while using, but not as quickly. Also, if you're doing power consuming things all at one on the phone, it's possible the phone will drain, just slower, like I have with I did that while running WiFi Tether.
I tried several "standard" MHL adapters, and the only one I could get to work was the Samsung OEM adapter. Can't speak for anyone else, but that adapter + standard HDMI cable works great.
You'll find it by searching for 'B00AG33VHU' on Amazon. (sorry, I can't post links yet)
