I'm trying to find a decent set of on-ear wired headphones (not around ear and not IN ear) to use with the galaxy note for music listening. I'm not concerned with the expense.
I'd prefer on-ear, as they tend to be lightweight and easy to walk around with. I'm currently using a pair of Sony 7506's - and while I appreciate the sound from them, they aren't very portable.
I have several in-ear models (mostly shure), but I'm finding that they are becoming uncomfortable. I guess that as I'm getting older, my ear canals are getting more sensitive.
I really do NOT want some overpowering bass headphones, and I refuse to jump on the "pay too much for a brand name" bandwagon. Clip on's are not acceptable. I'd like them to be somewhat isolating, but I know that good isolation simply isn't feasible with lightweight headphones.
This would be easy if not for one last requirement: no external amp.
Any suggestions?

I know you specifically said you didn't want to pay too much for brand names or anything, but nonetheless, Bose OE2's or OE2i's may offer what you're looking for. Sure they're an expensive brand name, but you get what you pay for, and they're quite comfy!
If I were looking in this category, my search would be between Beyerdynamic, Ultrasone, Grado, Bose, and Sennheiser...probably even in that order myself. You will find a good mix between open-air and closed on-ear headphones in those brands. If you really want a closed on-ear design, you should probably skip Ultrasone and Grado though.
Sennheiser PX100 are pretty detailed & portable, but open backed.

If you are not concerned about the expenses the go for the Westone 4R

After you wear those for 5 minutes you will find out there are sounds is the music you are listening, sounds never heard before. It is an amazing experience.
I simply love them. The only drawback... expensive
one more thing. try to use them with with complyfoam.com earbuds. they really make a difference.
Before dismissing IEMs make sure you tried different tips.
The Shure olives f.e. are very comfortable on my beloved Etymotics HF5, I can wear them for 10 hours straight on a flight without any discomfort, whereas most tips irritate me within 30 minutes.
A populair on-ear with reasonable isolation is the Sennheiser HD25.

1. Use Poweramp or another music player from the Play Store. The standard Players often don't have a multi-channel equalizer, so these programms are worth their price.
2.Good in ear-earphones cost more than 150$. So don't have long pockets and short arms.
I made very good experiences with Shure Headphones. They start at around 100$
but you can also spend 500$ if you are audiophile.
I bought the Shure SE315 for around 160$ and im very contended.

Westone 1 Use with the Grey Memory foam, comfy, low profile, the best overall for me daily IEM and motorcycle IEM, great for all genres of music... I saw the thread you started in the i9000 forum. Does Poweramp interact directly with the DAC? I believe Voodoo Sound skips the Android channel mixer, using the i9000's Wolfson DAC chip directly. The sound is amazing. I use it straight no equalizer (personal prefs), but you can salt+pepper to taste with DSP Manager. This seriously made the i9000 the best portable media player I've ever owned. Bonus that I don't need a headphone amp, too.
I used to have a bad headphone habit. I'm pared down to three now, and only two get regular use. $100-$150 is a good benchmark, but don't neglect the handful of great headphones under $50. There's other threads about that in Android and i9000 accessories, but my faves in that category are the Koss Porta Pros, Sennheiser PX200, and the discontinued Sennheiser MX500. They started a new line, and I'm using Senn's MX471s for daily beater headphones now, and they sound great after burn-in. In that in-between period, a lot of people seemed to switch over to the Yuin PK3.
In the upper end, I love the Sennheiser HD25-1. It's one of the standards for TV/radio news for its great clarity and noise-blocking. There's a great little company out of Brooklyn, too -- Grado, for open headphones. They did a collaboration with another 'boutique' hi-fi shop, Allessandro, and made some great headphones. I have the MS-1 and it doesn't get as much love as it should. Way more airy + super clear mids and highs, and you can hear amazing separation of instruments. The HD25-1 is good there too, with a stronger but clear bass.

I used to use the Senn PX200 and then the HD25-1 in an office to block out noise, sometimes not even plugged into anything. Both are great headphones. The HD25 is now called the HD25-1 II, and *should not* be confused with the cheaper HD-25SP. For a little more on the 25-1, you get a lot.
The stock earbuds that come with the Gnex aren't half bad. SHURE makes great earbuds.

I'm still waiting for a good mobile headphones. The problem is you can't try them before buying so it makes the searching efforts frustrating.
i was able to try those earbud beats and they are good. They're mainstream and sometimes an eyesore seeing everyone wearing them, but in the end of the day, you want some good sounds, the beats can help you with that.

I kind of disagree with this statement.
Good in ear-earphones can easily be bought for 80euros (or around 100$) and up. I am currently owning Sennheiser in-ears for around 60 Euros (don't ask me about the model)
Also Klipsch does high quality in-ears for a very reasonable price.
Secondly, it highly depends on your Hardware. My Desire doesn't serve as a decent MP3 player at all, as you can hear so much interference with the antenna.

I'm getting a galaxy nexus next week and heard it has one of the best "soundcards" in it, and wanted to get an "higher end" earbuds than the ones that comes with it. I have beyerdynamic dt770 pro 32ohm already for home use, but im looking for earbuds that I can use on the bus/plane and when training/running. My friend has iBeats on his htc sensation and he is pleased, but sometimes he calls random people because its only meant for iphone I think? So this is what I want
- Good quality (durable)
- Good sound (Listen mostly to hiphop, dnb, metal)
- Good bass
- Volume control (dont REALLY need this)

It has a built in slider volume adjust which works with any phone and a single button/mic for answering calls and music control. I haven't tried spotify yet but when I use poweramp I can pause/change/play all my songs with the one button.
They are noise isolating earbuds and come with various bud sizes. They are about 50$.

Thanks, but dont seem to find Zagg here in Norway Ive heard good things about Klipsch image s4, they cost about half of the ibeats here in norway.
I'm using the Klipsch s4a model (designed for Android) and I love them. I've also swapped out the tips with Comply T-100 foam tips. They're much more comfortable, better noise cancelling and bass.
+1 for Klipsch S4's, been using them on my galaxy nexus and love the sound.
If you're looking for something instead of beats you should try ultimate ears triplefi out. I got them not to long ago and they've been working great so far.

If you want something cheap, but yet has damn good sound then I recommend the ZAGG Smartbuds. ZAGG always has 50% off coupons through their Twitter so I got it for 25 bucks. If you want something a little better and a little more expensive, then the Klipch (I think I spelled that wrong =/) is your best bet. I believe they're under 100. Good luck!
i have the Pure Pur-1000 and i've gone through many earbuds and these are the best sounding kind.
make sure you break them in correctly though-- i left mine playing on a playlist overnight-- takes around 20-30hrs though for a full break in.
I have used the Kilpsch Image s4's as well as others in here and agree they do sound great. The problem I ran into with them was getting them to fit comfortably. They are IEM's meaning the go into the ear canal. I have Sony MDR XB40EX model ear buds. They are great if you really like bass, and the overall sound quality is pretty good.

I've been using the Yamaha EPH-100. I would say its one of the best under $200. Do dig into head-fi and check reviews
These won't win any awards for looks, but they sound DAMN good for the price. Give all those higher end buds a run for their money.

No noise cancellation, but they do isolation pretty good.
If you really like bass, but want clarity and natural sound and don't mind paying a little bit more I would totally recommend the Hippo VB (Variable Bass). They have the deepest bass of the bunch, or at least appear that way because they lack a distracting midbass hump. Their bass is also quite controlled and rich in texture, more like a good full-sized phone, and clearly performing way above its price range. You can read some reviews of people who had them (and know what they are talking about) here and get them from ebay.

It depends on what sort of sound you're looking for. I, for instance, appreciate the lush midrange (vocals, many instruments) of my Thinksound Rain headphones. They're durable, too. I accidentally put them through the washer and they came out just fine.
Thinksound's TS-02 would be a good model for a cell phone. I'd buy them myself if I wasn't already happy with my Rockboxed Sansa Fuze.
The guy who owns Thinksound, Aaron, is amazing. I sent him an email complaining that none of the included eartips were a good fit for my ears, and he contacted the factories in China to see if any others could be special ordered for me. The answer was no, but it's the thought that counts.
I don't know about the Klipsch. But I had the Zagg ones and decided to use my stock ones from my old xv6700 instead, just wasn't a fan.
I use skull candy 50/50. Great sound and bass. Just wish the in line mic would work.

I've been using Meelectronics as of the last year or two. They have lots of great low priced ones (my current pair is $10 and are on par with $40 pairs I've owned). They also have some higher priced ones in the $50-$80 mark, and from looking at the reviews, they're worth that much as well.
The company is all over Amazon. Check out a few pairs of their headphones and some of the reviews, and if you go with them, enjoy!

For exercising, especially running in a soft rain like you mentioned, you should look into wireless headsets. You don't want to be bothered with hanging wireless or reaching out for controls. The two popular choices are Jaybirds BlueBuds X and Plantronics BackBeat Go 2. Look into my signature link for an index of all my reviews, including these two. For your price range, BBG2 will definitely fit the bill and they sound a lot better than BBX. Both are treated with water repellent, have just two earbuds with a wire between them and in-line controls (play/pause, volume up/down, track next/prev) and mic for taking calls. BBX has longer battery life, but BBG2 comes with a neat little storage case that has built-in battery for juicing up between trips. And also BBG2 is a lot cheaper, plus has a more detailed wider sound. Both benefit greatly when used with Comply Foam tips to stay better inside your ears when moving around and also for a better isolation (and deeper bass ).
I have no problems with running with a cord under my shirt. Rain is no issue this way.

Second: Don't buy anything with vents or adjustment screws, as rain can get in (so can sweat).

It's a shame as it makes using the Bluebuds with my phone useless unless I disconnect the pebble first, which sort of defeats the point of using apps like "music boss." Since it works fine on 4.4 on my Nexus 4, I'm guessing that the bitpool of the bluetooth connection lowers when the pebble is in town. Really hoping for a kit kat update soon to sort this out!

I'm currently looking for some buds to replace my Sennheiser CX300IIs.
I am wanting a good sound at a good price and I've narrowed my options down to 3 possible buds:
RHA MA750i
Beyerdynamic DX 160 (after reading this)
Klipsch X7i (I think my favourite)
But I am no audiophile and these would be my first pair of half decent in ear buds.
I'd love your opinion and which ones would you go for?

To be honest, $25 Xiaomi Pistons were designed as an alternative to CX300 Klipsch has a very poor quality. Beyer sounds good, but Pistons have the best value.

It's hard to buy earphones off the internet because of an inability to test them before committing to the product. I would like to have good audiophile quality and perhaps the extra functionality with my HTC One will be nice (although not having it will not be a dealbreaker).

What is your budget? Your price spread is from $25 to $125 (Beyer phones are over $100). If you are constantly on the go and prone to loosing your headphones, I wouldn't invest into anything expensive. Stay within good value budget so if you loose it - it's easier to replace without breaking a bank. Klipsch quality went down. Shure lower price model is a junk. Except for E10, I'm not too familiar with others but see reviews with a mixed bag of comments.
If you want to stay on the budget in $25-$35 range, Pistons 2 and E10 are great. Btw, Soundmagic just released E10S version with in-line remote, I'm getting it for review toward the end of this week. Going a little higher in price you have Ostry KC06A and Audio Technica ATH-IM50 (with removable cables). Hitting $100, you have a great choice of Beyer DX 160 or Brainwavz S5.

Thank you for your response and I will look into the suggestions you have made. I would also like to inquire as to how well these headphones would handle use during sports like jogging. Your advise is very much appreciated.
When you a dealing with this type of wire down headphones (versus wire over the year or with removable in-/over-ear stabilizers), the fitment while you are exercising will depend on how well eartip is jammed into your ear If you are using Comply foam tips, they expand creating a great inner ear seal and hold earpieces secure. BUT a big drawback with Comply tips is their superior noise isolation which cuts down on your awareness when outside running/exercising/cycling, etc.
For exercising and great sound quality, I would highly recommend Monster iSport Victory (look up in my list, I reviewed those as well). Totally forgot to mention about those, but their sound quality is on part with DX 160ie, and they got in-ear stabilizer. The neon green one is on amazon for $118, the same price as DX 160ie.
I am kind of hard of hearing.
I am looking for suggestions on the following for headphones/buds. I would prefer buds but over the ear is okay.
1. Loud. (Loud enough to use while I am mowing the lawn and weed eating) I listen to both music and podcasts.
2. Clear/Good sound.
3. Not too expensive.
First one that says "Beats" gets my AR-15 pulled on them. Though no one should make that suggestion since two of my requirements are that they sound good and are inexpensive.
I use the ones that came with my M8 for everyday use and I had a certain set that I used while mowing. (They were earbuds and came with one of my MOTO phones I think) I broke them the other day mowing when they caught on the handle of the pull start and ripped apart.
Anyway, is anyone in a similar situation that has suggestions for me?
Also, down the road, I would like to find some BT earbuds or headphones that fit the same criteria.
If you have seen a sticky with all my reviews (also the link in my signature), I reviewed a ton of headphones. When it comes to wired ones and on a budget, Xiaomi Pistons might be a good choice for you but wires will get in the way. Speaking from a personal experience when I'm working in my backyard, you need to go with a wireless headset. I absolutely enjoy using my LG HBS-730 because of all the controls under my fingers. HBS-800 has a better sound, but some of the controls are not as easy to access and 800 cost $90 while 730 is on sale for $43 now. Both were reviewed and in my list. 730 is a great choice under $50, you can get it loud enough, and all the controls are easy to access.
It really depends on what you want to use them for.. Yes obviously listen to music but is that all?. Do you want a pair for watching movies with big sound or are they just for your way to work on the bus..
Perso, I bought the cheapest pair of sony buds and they work like a charm.
On a side note, if your hard at hearing why would the sound quality be a priority since your probably going to phase out the deeper hrz you would find on more expensive gear.....
If somewhat hard of hearing, I think sound isolating headphones (either closed back ones that just keep sound out, or active noise cancellation ones) would be the way to go. In my experience, managing the signal-to-noise ratio is as important as total volume. Knock out the background noise, and the signal that you want to hear will be easier to hear at moderate volume.
Xiaomi Piston 2 have very good sound from what I have read. If you use Comply tips they will also isolate very well.

If you have seen a sticky with all my reviews (also the link in my signature), I reviewed a ton of headphones. When it comes to wired ones and on a budget, Xiaomi Pistons might be a good choice for you but wires will get in the way. Speaking from a personal experience when I'm working in my backyard, you need to go with a wireless headset. I absolutely enjoy using my LG HBS-730 because of all the controls under my fingers. HBS-800 has a better sound, but some of the controls are not as easy to access and 800 cost $90 while 730 is on sale for $43 now. Both were reviewed and in my list. 730 is a great choice under $50, you can get it loud enough, and all the controls are easy to access.

Sorry for just now getting back here but I have been busy. Thanks for the replies. As recommended both by you and note10 I will check out the Pistons.
As for the LG BT buds, I picked up a pair a few months ago at the Verizon store. A lot of the employees in the stores had them on so I specifically asked about quality and volume. I was told they were great. So I bought them. They were the LG Pro. On sale for $59.
Well they sounded like crap. no volume and it was like I was listening through a tin can. So I took them back. Someone I know was working theat day and I told him my problem. And he was wearing a pair. So this guy leveled with me. The ones they are carrying are the second gen and they have been getting them all back. Just about everybody in the store that was wearing them had the first gens. Huge difference.

Perso, I bought the cheapest pair of sony buds and they work like a charm.
On a side note, if your hard at hearing why would the sound quality be a priority since your probably going to phase out the deeper hrz you would find on more expensive gear.....

I will mostly use them around the house and yard work for both music and podcasts of talk shows.
As for wanting sound quality, I am hard of hearing, not deaf. I have losses in some upper ranges. And I also have tinnitus which is mainly why I need the louder volume. I still like deep rich bases and clear highs (at least the ones I can hear)

I don't like buying headphones that are too expensive. That's why I bough the Skullcandy Ink'd 2.0. They seem to be really solid headphones and even after 5 times in the washing machine were working for me. :good:
They can go pretty loud and they're really clear audio quality. That is my recommendation
If volume is the biggest problem, something like a Fiio E11 ask amp, or even an E6, would help.
However, I fully agree you should first focus on isolation and clarity, thus salvaging whatever hearing you can. Foam tips are your friend.
Bluetooth will likely never be as loud or as clear as plugging directly in, also.
