Noob questions need answers - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So im getting my 4g touch today but have issue with sprint data signal around my area. Im in AIT training and need my phone tether without costing and without getting caught. Also is there any way to strengthen the data signal. I see 3g x1 but no clue what that means and last whats the best rom for what i listed for. Appreciate anyone that helps and much appreciation.

The 3g and 1x just means you are either A) in an area that you are getting full 3G coverage. B) 1x means the speed of your service has dropped to below that of what 3G is "supposed" to be so things like internet and the like are going to perform slower. Not sure about the tether as I do not use it sorry :/

for tether hop on a custom rom. I believe most if them here have a hotspot hack. try calkulins 2.9.1 or blu kuban 2.0. I have had best results with those. welcome buddy. happy flashing. remember to NOT use rom manager and to read around beforehand so you don't own a brick.

Why not

I've used Rom Manager for quite some time.. never had an issue. Also, soft bricking is a worry.. but not life threatening for your device. It's more of an annoyance. Also, if you are using an Samsung Epic 4g Touch.. MAKE SURE YOU SEARCH SAMSUNG EPIC 4G TOUCH. The Galaxy S2 on here is not your phone.
Happy Flashing to you sir..
P.S. I recommend Changing your PRL to 11115 and getting Roam Control.. So far it is the best combo that I've found.
If you don't know how to change your PRL... there are many threads devoted to such a task. Good Luck

[Q] Download and Upload speeds swaped !!!

Did not see any previous treads that mentioned this condition.
Its been going on for a while since I started flashing ICS. Three different builds by different Dev's and I get the same results Slow download speed and CRAZY fast upload speeds, with good 3G and 4G connections, I live in a metro area with tons of anteneas and towers around me. Using control Epic (Wifey's stock Epic) on same networks while running speedtest at the same time on both Epics.
I still get data, but its butt slow while stock Epic just wizzes along with Youtube, play store, Emails, whatever it is concerning data. This time around WiFi is not affected that works fine on both phones, streaming, downloading, both are equal. On on build i had reverse WiFi speeds also, but not this time.
Anyone come across this BUG??? Currently running Calk's E4GT 2 v1.2, FC18 Modem, ICS 4 ICS theme. Great looks fast Rom everything works, (kinda)
Rouge recovery.
When I revert back to stock/rooted EL29 all is normal again. Fast D/L - slow U/L.
Pp.:confused
PS. Second time around with this question.
Common where are those android brains, is this stumping you guys!!!
Give it your best shot, I'll consider any idea or suggestion. Don't just look , post.!!
try changing your modem?
Will try fc22 see how that works. maybe reflash rom too.
did it work?
No. Still the same. Luckely I'm around WiFi most of the time. On FC22 modem. Now.

very strange
I'm having the same problem. I'm also in a metro area (NYC). Fast data on stock/gingerbread ROMs. Slow data on any ICS roms. and i mean slooooooow.
I've flashed multiple ROMS, kernals and modems, no avail.
I actually get decent speeds in Manhattan (but not stellar) but in Brooklyn (a mere 12 miles away) i get .10 Mb speeds, no exaggeration. I find it hard to believe that someone is going to tell me that Brooklyn won't have the towers i need for decent data.
Wifi works perfectly on both ICS and GB.
We can't be the only two having this problem. I've googled it and searched the forum but I can't find an answer. Could it be that ICS isn't officially out for the e4gt yet so the ROMs are having flakey service?
Please help, anyone.
On a side note thought, the ROMs that I have tried have no other major issues for me. great job to those who developed them!

Bump I have this issue in Washington DC and I thought T-Mobile 3g on crack sucked

They are upgrading the towers in Brooklyn. I received a letter a few days ago.

I know sprint is upgrading the LTE towers but a far as 3g/4g speeds is that the reason also?
Why do gingerbread ROMs work but ICS ROMs do not in BK?

Help with E4GT radios needed

I had the Evo 4g for about 1.5 years and it was a great phone. It started having problems so I decided to upgrade to the Samsung S2 on Sprint. Ever since I got it I have low signal most everywhere, can't connect to 4g unless I'm out under open sky, and my phone flips to roaming a lot. I have updated everything but still no fix. I'm rooted but on stock ATM. Please I need some suggestions for fixing this with tweaks or a better rom. Specs below.
SPH-D710
2.3.6
EL29
All I can suggest is try all the modems,at most I get 4 bars,4g cuts out alot for me

Ignore the low signal stuff. Our phone is just really accurate. Nothing wrong with our radios. You'll still be fine if its low signal usually

A lot of times when I am roaming or have really low bars I can't make or receive calls at all. I seem to remember having similar problems with a Samsung device on T-Mobile. Is the hardware side of Samsung's weaker than HTC? If it was just low signal but I could still use the device as a phone I wouldn't care, but it is just an expensive toy a decent portion of my day as it is right now.
Try clearing your nvram and reactivating.

Yeah I ignore my signal bar as well.. Even when it's low, my calls data sms are just fine.. But then again I'm in a area where sprint works great

How do you clear your nvram?
Part of my point in all this is that I am in an area that has good Sprint coverage, the only difference between my usage is the phone. I was consistently on 4G with my Evo now I very rarely can connect or stay connected, I always had cell service on my Evo, now lots of dropped calls and static and unable to send/recieve texts unless under open sky.

Your best bet might be to try a bunch of different modems. [modems here = radios on other devices like HTC]
You'll have to root and add CWM to flash them. Modems are build 'independant'. Meaing you could be on EL29 and use an FG20 modem if you'd like. By far the best reception (both 3g an 4g) has been on the FG20.
If you want to keep your phone on EL29 stock use sfhub's 'Autoroot' and add EL29+CWM-Rogue. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
Hit up the 'Modem repository by rwilco12 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295
After each modem flash I suggest updating the PRL and Profile too.
Find one that gives you the best signal for your area.
There are also '3g/4g speed tweak' posts in this forum That will work on GB and ICS builds.
Good luck.

You would think they would've mellowed this out of the all the phones by now, but you may be experiencing the infamous Loss of Service (LOS) issue this phone wrought when it was first released.

You can either use odin or a dialer code + your MSL.
There are new PRL out and I get a better signal now and better 3g speeds. Update prl and profile first. Next try different modems, I like FE22
Thank you everyone. I just updated the PRL and Profile again. I'll see if that makes any difference and if not I will start running through the modems. If I find something that works I'll post back.

Roms (Best Rom for Sprint to Boost flashed Epic)

Hi,
I am in need of a few answers. I searched everywhere and did not see anything directly relating to this specific issue. Similar but not specific.
I have a Sprint Epic 4g touch currently flashed to boost mobile for service. I was hesitant to root but I took the plunge and did some research as to the safest way to do so without breaking my phone or its settings.
Now that that is done, I want to take another plunge and tweak this phone to get the best possible setup. I live in South Carolina and the sprint coverage here is craptastic so maybe there isnt much i can do get better signal strength and faster data. But I at least want to get a rom that is compatible with my situation (boost flashed sprint phone)
I took a chance and started flashing different modems and prls none of which helped with signal or data. But none of them gave me any real problems other than one modem which gave me an error 16 when attempting to use Boost 411. <------ I love boost 411 so i went back to the default modem of FF18 and that fixed my error 16.
Sorry rambling none of that is my issue. The phone works perfect. I am asking some of the more experienced users who have took the plunge did the flashing and reported the problems or successes if they have any good suggestions for roms that I can flash that will tweak my phone to get the most out of it on boost mobile. APK suggestions are so welcome. Phone settings or mods that can help me really make this thing better even on boosts crappy service. Not complaining I know I am getting what I pay for. CHEAP. But cheap doesnt always have to mean crappy. So any help or suggestions would be so wonderful
THANK-YOU
Which roms did you not have problems with? I'm looking for a good ROM as well, in central florida.
I am using CM10 from Phantomfreak. Works well for me.

Epic 4G on Page Plus

So I found a couple posts here regarding flashing the Samsung Epic 4G to use on Page Plus, along with the comprehensive Google Document on how to do it.
My questions are:
If I follow this process and get an Epic 4G on Page Plus, can I flash custom ROMs to the phone whenever I want or will flashing the ROMs overwrite what I did to get the phone on Page Plus and will I have to do it every time I flash a custom ROM?
Also, I could really figure out from the posts or the document if everything works normally on the Epic once on Page Plus or if it is quirky and has random things that don't work.
I guess what I'm asking is, is this a good idea? I don't need to do this but I'm on Page Plus with my Droid X2, which I am beginning to hate because I cant get a decent up to date ROM on it (JB), and a friend is offering to sell his Epic 4G for a good price and I want to stay on Page Plus, which I really like.
Thanks!

I've been using Pageplus on my Epic4G for almost a year now and I can tell you that flashing any kinda of Rom (stock or custom) will not effect your pageplus service, except maybe for data which you need to edit the APN settings (using "apn backup" app from the market) every time you install a new rom to your phone.
Data speed are spotty and so slow with Sprint phones on Pageplus that if the data worked for you in the first place. ( I have 100mb on my PP monthly plan, but I didn't use any of it since I've migrated to cm10, used to be working with stock roms).
also, I don't know yet if voice-mail notification is fully working now or not, but mostly keep checking from time to time just in case someone left you a voice-mail.
Other than the data and voice-mail issues, everything else is working fine like any other phone.
Thanks for the reply Sohip. I am unclear on the data issues though. You said:

Are you saying data is really spotty and slow on Page Plus with the Epic in general or doesn't work at all? I have a 2gb data plan and I've never had speed or spotty issues with PP on my Droid X2 at all. Is this something specific to the Epic on PP?
If that's the case I suppose I'm just better off sticking with the Droid X2?
Thanks!
I think they are specific only to Sprint phones on Pageplus, my data speed on speedtest.net are like 0.2 mb only.. do you know what's your data speed on your verizon phone with pageplus?

[Q] G-apps, 4G, and GPS questions

Hi all. I think this is the right place for this..
I have looked around the forum and I have gotten the answers and solutions to some of my questions. But not definite ones.. :L
First, this isn't really ROM related but, is Sprint's 4G still Wimax? And are they ever going to go to LTE?
Second, when I flashed AOKP 4.0.4 my GPS didn't work at all. Then I read that I had to flash to a GB ROM, get a lock, then flash back to ICS or JB. Which I did, and it worked. I have GPS now. I was wondering should I do this again when I flash to CNA 3.5.6
Lastly, which isn't in the title but, is there a modem for this phone that improves 3G and 4G signal and speed? At school I have no 4G at all and 3G is incredibly slow. But yet when I literally go a block away, I have really fast 3G and 4G..
And for really the last thing xD My battery life has sucked terribly ever since ICS. I don't do a lot of heavy usage on my phone, but just using the facebook app for 2 minutes will drain my battery from 99% to 81%. Not kidding. It's really annoying and I read that kernals can affect battery life as well. So I'd like suggestions on that too.
Thank you kindly for taking the time to read this :fingers-crossed:
Edit: Never mind about the gapps =)

First, sprints 4g is currently a mixture of LTE and WiMax. They are currently deploying LTE and have it available in some markets. They will continue support of the current WiMax network thru 2014.
Second, once you have a lock on aokp, if you lock it before flashing it should stick. However you may need to go back to GB to lock, not 100% just depends on several factors
Third, modems vary for area to area. You'll need to try them to see what works best in your area.
Finally, battery issues depend on a lot if things besides just kernel, this is another thing you'll have to find by trial and error like modems. One thing you should check is the actual battery to see if its swollen. Try spinning it on a flat surface, if it spins like a top its starting to swell. If its not swollen you'll just have to try different setups til you find something that works for you. If it is swollen you'll need to replace it, corporate sprint repair centers will usually swap it out for free if its swollen, otherwise amazon has some for pretty cheap. Non OEM brands to look for are anker or Hyperion, in that order.
Hope that answers your questions.
