[Q] Looking to buy, various questions - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Yes, I have done some searching. These are the questions that I did not feel I found a definitive answer to, or, perhaps, I missed the answer in the mountain of search results.
I am looking to buy a gsm Nexus for use on tmobile in the relative near future.
1. On various sites I see the "international" version, the "canadian" version and the "uk" version. Are there are significant differences that I should be aware of?
2. I have seen conflicting reports about getting warranty work when buy through sites like negri, expansys and handteck. Some people seem to say any of those will let you send it to them and they will send it in. In other threads I have seen doubts and caveats. Has anyone actually successfully done this with any of them?
3. I have seen lots of posts about 3rd party warranty/insurance that *won't* work. Has anyone found one that will cover this phone?

The different "versions" have slightly different firmware. This is all the talk about "yakju" vs. "yakju**" models. Unless you get it from the UK it probably won't be yakju. Doesn't matter at all, as any version can be flashed to 100% yakju without rooting or anything, and you'll be receiving OTAs from Google.

If you buy from a reputable importer (like those listed above) they will help you with the international Samsung warranty. You ship to them, they ship to Sammy, ship it back, ship it back. It takes a while though.

Believe Squaretrade will work.

Thanks !

So what happened to T-Mobile UK? No Nexus announcement at all?

I haven't heard a peep out of them. Even phoned them up today to ask and the lady simply told me they have nothing on their systems.
I find it strange as they were always such strong supporters of Android and from the G1 to the Nexus devices. I've seen this, but nothing else to back it up.
Anyone know anything about T-Mobile and if they are simply going to offer it later or they are actually not offering it at all?

Replies on their Facebook page vary from "no info yet" to "we're not going to stock it".
It seems the only way to get it on T-Mobile is going to be through a third party supplier. And none of those are advertising upgrade prices - they all ask you to call.
I'm seriously considering porting my number to a PAYG O2 SIM and then returning to T-Mobile as a new customer.
there's already a topic about this

Is the Galaxy Nexus sold on Google Play the exact same as the international version?

Looking to leave Sprint and go with a Galaxy Nexus and use it with Straight Talk (on T-Mobile's network). I was going to buy online but now i'm thinking about buying locally due to time constraints.
Just wondering if the Google Play GNexus is the same as an International version that many are advertising on craigslist. Is there anyway to verify as well?
Yes. The only variation is the NTT DoCoMo version from Japan. It's a bit different than others, but by in large, the unlocked GNEX is the same everywhere, including directly from Google. Of course we don't know what you are looking at on Craigslist, so it's really a guess, but it's likely the same as what's sold everywhere else.
Exact same with 99.9% same software. The only difference is that it has Google Wallet pre-loaded on it. And you get a full US warranty.
Otherwise, it's the exact same. Unlocked (pentaband), unbranded, etc..
ah, never thought about the wararnty. i guess i'll be getting it from Expansys USA then. Thanks

Not quite exactly the same. The one's sold by Google on the Play Store seem to have a bootloader that does not wipe when unlocked, compared to non-Play Store devices.

Seen threads on this. Fully confirmed? If so, still has no real-world effect on the use of the device compared to international i9250 models.

Fully confirmed that it exists. What's not confirmed yet is whether it is a hardware or software issue.
You're right, no material real-world effect, but the OP was asking for differences, and given that may be a hardware difference, I thought I'd throw it out there.

I do want the US warranty. http://www.expansys-usa.com/google-nexus-prime-android-smartphone-unlocked-16gb-224148/
i guess looking at the expansys listing, it doesn't say anything about a US warranty but rather their own 1 year warranty.
I got mine from Expansys USA and it came loaded with the yakju ROM <- which means it's actually the european phone. But no worries, all you do is download and flash the takju ROM and it will be exactly like the Google Play store phones. (only difference is google wallet anyways)

is the bootloader not wiping a roadblock when customizing? i'd be looking to root and flash a custom ROM.

Then you should buy it from the play store comes with a full one year USA warranty

No, not an issue. You still end up doing a factory data reset on the phone through CWM whenever installing a new ROM.
It's just nice that the bootloader doesn't wipe the phone if you've been using the phone for a while and can't back anything up without root ... which usually requires an unlocked bootloader if no exploit is available. Did you get all that? I tried to make it as confusing as possible; as you can see. <

They just act as a middle man for a European warranty. They take the phone, send to Europe, Samsung fix it, send it back, send it back. Takes longer and requires Expansys to be in the middle. If its not that much more expensive, I'd order from Google Play personally.

yeah i figured that may have been the case. i contacted some guy on craigslist listing a new few days used google play nexus for $400. i'm gonna see if i can get on that
pretty excited!
Hmmm, I'd be wary of someone selling a few days used GNex - from what I've read on this forum some of them are lemons. Why isn't the guy just returning it to Google for a refund?

That's what I'd wonder. He's got a full refund period.
what kind of issues are there?
Screen color issues and some phones are just generally buggy. Various people have reported having issues with their GNex until they get it replaced with one that isn't buggy.

There are threads in the dev section related to c-spire. I'm sure you can Google the company to get all the info that you're looking for.

C-Spire is a regional carrier that is generally located in the Southeast of the United States. They used to be known as Cellular South and offered Nextel phones, if I'm not mistaken.
As far as roms go, you may be able to find a handful of them through out the Sprint forums on XDA.

You'd probably need a modified framework, but there's no chance as its impossible to modify anything in system with your device. No root available as yet.
I live in the UK and I'm a little bemused as to why US carriers lock down their users so much:?

It's like an abusive relationship. They abuse us because they can.
On a side note. I didn't end up getting the tablet because apparently Best Buy had the wrong price on Ebay. They cancelled my order and refunded me.
I think they should have had to honor the price but there is no way to open a dispute since the item didn't ship on ebay.

What version S4 to get (Carrier, Unlocked US, Korean)?

So I have the S3 and talked the other half into why I need to upgrade!
I'm on AT&T and am using a US Cell S3 w VzW Oreo so am not afraid of porting and making it work.
I do want AT&T NumberSync though, which is why I'm leaning towards getting it direct. But, I've seen a few forums mention getting the Korean version for the 6GB of RAM.
I'm looking to be educated, so please let me know your thoughts. I need it to be cell.

IMO go with Korean. Unless you don't care about paying for additional tablet line and rooting.
I'm able to use my existing voice sim in the tablet and it has a phone app and messaging like a regular phone.
Originally I bought the Verizon version - no oem unlock, requires tablet sim and only 4gb ram
Basically only downside I can see to ordering Korean one through eBay is the time you have to wait for it to get here. Not that bad but not the instant gratification we all want! I never knew about ordering foreign tablets, was always scared off by lack of warranty. But due to how carriers restrict US tablets, I will be buying from Korea every time in the future.

Because the international version lacks a warranty, at least for USA consumers, I purchased a Squareteade warranty.
Being in HK, I'm not sure if a warranty might apply to you or not, or if there is another similar 3rd party warranty available.

so if i don purchase an extra warranty i can get it replaced only if it's damaged or not working properly?
also, does the extra warranty cover all imperfect problems observed including but not limited to those i mentioned above?
and how about rooted device? covered or not? for example, rooted but green lines found later?

Yes. I'm on TMobile can use play store, Samsung dialer as if it were a phone, texting everything. Works great no issues.
TMobile sees it as an unknown phone I notice no throttling whatsoever besides the same video throttling that applies to all phones. (A VPN handles that anways. )

Thanks. I'm on AT&T so it will definitely work.
I've tried finding a definitive answer but I couldn't find it. I've watched numerous videos that showed the phone icon but nothing showing it being used. Thanks again. This will definitely be my next phone.

My Korean t835 is rooted.
Afaik the only one that can't be rooted is Verizon bootloader locked one.
I have the AT&T model.... I just assumed that it couldn't be rooted, like my note pro 12.2...
