RESOLVED:SUPER SLOW HSPA speeds (652kbps) with FULL signal! What can I do? (T-Mobile) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have a Stock (rooted) Galaxy Nexus GSM (4.0.1) software on T-Mobile. I'm getting HORRIBLY SLOW data speeds even with full signal HSPA.
Anyone else having this issue? What did you do to fix it?
Thanks in advance!

I know this sounds really weird but when I have GPS-enabled and use the app, it drastically slows my results. Try disabling it and report back. Also, your ping is VERY high!!!

try a flashing a new radio im currently on KL1 but some say KK6 and KK7 are good choices too.

Choose a server closer to your location? 220 ms.

It depends on ur location too...what have u averaged with other 4G phones? Keep in mind that roms use "H" or "4G" to depict the "strongest" signal....but maybe its your radio too...I'm on KL1 and it works great for me

I'm on KL1. Weird thing is, my wife's phone is really slow too and she has a Nexus S. We have great service here, I even called t-mobile and they said we have full 4G coverage, as good as it gets. I just downloaded a 4mb app, and it took 5 minutes! that's bad!

That's the closest server to my location. But it's not just the app, market is slow, browser is slow, everything's crazy slow!

I would try a different radio/baseband. Although people have different results, the UGKL1 and UGKK7 are made for North America including AWS bands (T-mobile). You can read more here.
The latest North American radio, UGKL1, has been working well for me. Give it a go here.

try a different server. Tmo is using a different line. The server closest to you geographically may not be the server closest to you . You get what I mean?

Wow! This is just pathetic! Anyone else on T-Mobile experiencing anything like this?
Edit: Don't mind the wifi indicator...I did these tests with wifi off.

What server are you using? Try using one near an internet backbone for the best results, the distance from you can be misleading because the connections don't always lead directly there.
Servers in or near Washington DC, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Dallas and Los Angelos should be the most reliable.
Is there any way to check if T-Mobile is throttling you?

I will try a different server. I called T-Mobile and they are doing a service check to see if the towers are jacked. They said they saw something fishy reported about the towers on Feb 29th, and they aren't sure if the issue has been fixed yet. Hopefully that's the problem and they're working on a fix. I don't think it's the speed-test app though because anything that has to do with data is incredibly slow. Took me 7 minutes to download a 2mb app! My wife's nexus s is doing the exact same thing, so I think it probably has to do with the tower (hopefully!). I'll try changing servers though and report back if the numbers improve significantly. Sad I'm the only one having a problem with this. Thanks to everyone for the input. Thanks xHausx for checking in!

This is kind of my speeds with changing the server around. Not bad at all.

Oh, well if the other phone is doing the exact same thing, you know its not your issue specifically.

also, wasn't T-Mobile throttling heavy users?

No. They only throttle at specific levels. Either 2GB or 5GB depending on your plan.

Figured it out!
I figured it out! The T-Mobile tower right next to my house is bad. I was driving around and ran the speed test in a couple other spots and got some great speeds! When I got back near the tower by our house I tested again, and again it sucked...so thank God, it's the tower and not the phone! Thankfully at home I have wifi, so who cares about the tower...I mean, it'll be nice when they get it fixed, but I'm good for now. Love the 4G speeds and really glad I can use them in other spots! Had me worried for a sec! Thanks to everyone for your suggestions! Really appreciate the help.

Holy high ping though

I think this was pretty apparent when you said you had two separate T-Mo phones both having the issue in the same place.

[Q]Wcdma?

Hey everyone, I recently got a new Android phone, Samsung galaxy s2x, it should have dual 4g capabilities. The speed isn't great compared to what others have been getting. I usually get around 3-4mbps, the Telus website says 7-14 should be attained...
My question is basically, in the wireless options, I can choose gsm, wcdma or both. Is wdcma considered hspa+ ?
I live in Montreal, where the Telus network should be fully developed. Highest speed I've got was 6mbps.
Anything wrong, or were my expectations too high when buying this phone?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Also, my girlfriend has an iPhone4 with Telus also, its often quicker than mine on the net...and its a 3g phone.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
see this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306045
there are some from Montreal they are getting great speed
the thing is with cell phones, it depends highly in your location and tower
also in Canada do not believe anything that says 4G it's all fake
our infrastructure is poor compared to the USA, at best we can only get good 3G speed even when you see 4G
even the Rogers LTE are no where near as good they also top out around 15 Mbps at its best, while the USA or other counterparts they get like 30 Mbps on LTE
So i'm stuck with slow speeds lol?
I kinda regret going with Telus, they have terrible reception as well as slow speeds...

I just tested mine and I got 19 down and 4 up on Telus. Most days I get an average of 10. I live outside of Vancouver. Downtown I am lucky to get 3.
Telus has always given me faster speeds than Rogers. I am very happy with Telus's network.

I think you are just not tech savy enough to use a cell like the S2X. Try doing a speed test in your browser and you will see that the speed test.net app is crap. I get 21 mbps downlink on telus in mtl using speedtest.net in dolphin HD (using app I get 3-10mbps). Stop blaming the carriers. People like you are just never happy but its your own fault! Maybe also if you would test your phone outside your basement it would help! Mtl reception is flawless, actually reception in QC in general is great.
I have tried all the different modems from the kj3, vk1 and even the Blaze LB7 and different roms and I still get miserable speed on my phone. I have many friends with different phones even 3G phones that are doing alot better. I am getting speeds of less than 300 k downlaod with with full bars.

I think some people had similar problems as you. I don't remember exactly but some workarounds are using the supercharger script and running those 3g scripts or whatever it's called.
Someone if i recall correctly couldn't get fast data at all, he opted for a warranty exchange and that fixed it for him.
If anything you could try making your own thread in the Q&A area and maybe those people who had similar problems can answer it for you. Obviously it's not because of your location because your friends' phones get fast speed in the same location

I'm surprised there isn't more chatter about Sprint's LTE plans on this forum. I think the success or failure of the NV program will make or break this phone, and Sprint itself. For sure it affects my own decisions about both. The timing will be critical.
p.s. I second the recommendation about the s4gru.com site. It is must reading for anyone who cares about the Sprint rollout, and who wants to make an informed choice. There is also a deep font of knowledge there about RF stuff.

I agree 100%. The rollout of NV & LTE is the crux of Sprint as a network thus far. Def going to be a make or break time for Sprint in the next few quarters, especially with regard to timing. They need to make a significant impact, and soon.
Also, just saw where Buffalo, NY got some love.

My guess is they're upgrading towers for LTE. 3G speeds are still the same though, that is to say, beyond belief terrible. But 4G has gone nuts. I might try to find a Sprint store in the area and check to see if LTE is live yet.

Data speeds.

I've never in m whole life used a gsm phone. I have the unlocked nexus and got myself tmobile service. It was the best coverage for the cost. But it seems my data speeds are sh*tty. Everything is super slow. Do I have to configure my phone for proper use with tmo? Everything seems to be OK except data. I've checked coverage I'm all green everywhere, doesn't make sense. have you tested the speed in another location? example if that test was done at home, do one at work/school and compare
if it is just as slow you can try flashing a different radio..
i have generally been getting about 3-10 mbps depending on where i am/time of test...faster speeds as it gets later (network traffic slows down quite a bit at night around 10pm-midnight)
Somethings not right there. Did you just activate the service? Sometimes it can take a couple days for everything to get squared away on T-Mobile's end.
Also, have you double checked your APN settings to make sure everything is in order?
I'd also try some reboots and airplane cycles to make sure its connecting. Although it looks like you've got full HSPA+ connectivity. It could also just be a fluke with the tower you're on or the speedtest server you're testing on.

I'm not bootloader unlocked or even rooted for that matter. When I do I will play around with radios. I even tried googling a way to force 3g instead of HSPA+ to make sure it wasn't the tower. No luck yet. I did a speed test at my home and it was the same. The speed test I posted was at work.

APNs seem right from what I can remember.
I think you either have a SIM problem, a tower problem, or data hasn't been activated properly on your account. I'd give it another full day (T-Mo can be slow to activate fully), and if its not working, call and tell them your phone's data speed is extremely slow. They can try to reset it on their end (or send new SIM) or check for a tower issue.
Did you get the 200MB plan and use it all up? Because they throttle you when you use it all up. Them look like throttled speeds to me.
Or maybe, they are throttling you by mistake...
Also, have you restarted your phone?
Power it off for a bit. Pull the battery... then start it back up. I've seen that fix MANY things, and it's easy.

So its been about three days and its still the same. I flashes a few different radio firmwares and I found one that will give me anywhere from .1 to .3Mbps down. I have opened a ticked with T-Mobile thinking it may be the tower(s) in my town. Haven't heard back yet but I want to keep this updated. If it doesn't work out I will probably end up going with an at&t mnvo

The same things is with my phone. Three days since activation and data speeds are 1x slow. It's time to play with radios
I've tried more radios than I can count. So I ordered an st att sim and got it activated today. There is a huuuge difference from .05 tmo to 3.5 att st so I guess even if coverage is good and they say its fine there are some places where the actual back haul of the network is seriously lacking. If it still doesn't work for you go ahead and try a different provider. Made a world of difference for me.

Spoke to a rogers rep and they said with the Galaxy S3, 20Mbps is highest achievable, with Iphone 5 42Mbps on the LTE Network. This is a load of poo.Any fix to making LTE faster on Galaxy s3 for rogers?

are you using the google play Speedtest.net APP? you have the Dual Core Galaxy? What Modem you using. If you guys can test RIGHT NOW let me know your speeds in TORONTO
LOL.
The speed of your LTE is going to depend on a few things. Your signal strength, and current network traffic. It will vary throughout the day; the speed is only relative. Each phone that can support LTE will have, theoretically, the same speed range. The only difference will be where you are, how far from the network towers, etc.
If your phone is getting 19kbps, then it sounds like there's actually a problem. If your phone is rooted, flash back to stock touchwiz and double check. If there is still a problem, call to make sure that your account isn't throttled or something, and that there aren't any network issues locally.
Edit: I see you said you're getting 17mbps. Why is this a problem? That speed tells me that your network is working, but probably having traffic issues. 17mbps is not slow in any way, so why even complain.
Rogers rep? More like Apple rep.
Stock ICS on my S3
Lmao the first guy you talked to is tryin to sell iPhones. I just checked and there's nothing about that officially in any of the Rogers customer rep sheets. Realistic speeds are 15-25mb/sec.
That's strange. I'm on bell and have been able to reach 45 down at work.

My highest is 47.5 I am usually over 40 when I check, this is in the burlington ontario area
One thing I have learned over the years is that the majority of cell phone company reps (there are exceptions) don't have a clue about what they are talking about! Here is my fastest, on Rogers, Sept 22, 2012. I was so amazed I saved it!

rogers user here
I have seen 56mbps in scarborough
I reckon you've been bamboozled by this representative. A few people on Rogers have refuted your claim. It seems like it could be something to do with your phone or your location.
If actual representatives are telling you you're being throttled to half speed all the time though, then you should seize this opportunity. Tell them you only want to pay half the price and threaten to switch to Bell or something.

I usually get around 30-49 in Vancouver area (GVRD).
I tested right now and got 46Mbps. Yes, I'm with Rogers running Rogers' i747m with Bell's Jelly Bean leaked ROM.

Yep, Google Play Speedtest.net App on a Rogers i747M. I'm running the pre-rooted stock rom from Mr. Robinson. I didn't fiddle around with modems or kernels.

Hey David Dee,
yup I can confirm, I clocked 64mbps DL.
Typically, I get around 15-25 in the areas I most go to.
But there are some good spots where I get between 40-60.
FOLKS...when testing with apps like speedtest.net, change servers and retest. Network congestion isn't just wireless user congestion, it's also the network path to the testing server....after the tower receives your signal.
