[Q] What 3D gaming performance should I be getting? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So, I seem to be getting really poor 3D performance out of my Galaxy Nexus, and would like to know if I should be worried.
Something like Shadowgun will fluctuate between running pretty smoothly (30-40 fps, I guess) and chopping noticeably (15-20 fps) on my phone, whereas other people report it running perfectly smoothly on their GNs. Even simpler 3D games like Wind-Up Knight or Cordy fail to run smoothly on my phone, constantly feeling a bit choppy and occasionally dropping to pretty bad framerates. A game that does run very smoothly is Minecraft, but it seems to be something of an exception.
What are your experiences? What version of Android are you running? I'm on 4.0.2 stock, and I'm trying to figure out if my issues have something to do with that (I've found some accounts of people claiming their performance dropped with the 4.0.2 update) or if my phone is actually not giving me the performance I should be getting.

I was playing Shadowgun last night and was amazed at how fast and smooth it was. No lag or stutter that I could notice, but I have no idea what fps I was pulling.
I'm running the latest GummyNex and Franco kernel. I highly recommend both.

Yeah, that doesn't sound at all like my experience. In the very first area of the game, the framerate was noticeably low on my phone, especially when looking out over the open area (it got a bit better when close to walls, etc.). And again, I'd like to find out if this difference is because I'm running 4.0.2 stock or if it's something else.
Could a certain GN unit really have significantly worse 3D performance than another without there being something seriously wrong with the GPU (which would probably show up in other ways as well, such as visual artifacts, etc.)? I seem to be getting similar scores to other non-overclocked GNs in benchmarks such as Antutu (yeah, I know they are not a good measure of performance, but I figured they could at least be useful when comparing the performance of different units of the same model).

FPSe performance on GNex

Hey,
i just bought an HDMI adapter for my GNex and wanted to play Crash Bandicoot with the FPSe Emulator, but the performance is like a wave ^^
For some seconds very smooth and then it begins to lag for some seconds and so on...
I also noticed that the warmer the phone the worse the performance, but why does it even go hot?
i mean the PSX has a 33MHz CPU
My setup: Apex 1.0.2
PopcornKernel 7.2
Does anyone have a simular problem?
cheers
I have the same "issue".
Fpsce works perfect on my Xperia Play, for example with Colin 2, always 50 fps, always perfect.
In Nexus i have over 40 fps with hard downs who makes the game inplayable, even with dual core boost marked.
I donĀ“t understand anything, maybe is about the 720p, maybe ICS, maybe GPU....

so when your phone gets warmer it has lower performance?
its probably due to throttling due to high thermal output. regardless of governor, kernel, or settings, if the chip gets too hot it will throttle down to the lowest state, usually 350mhz. causing massive lag. this is normal practice in a lot of poorly cooled, space confined chips. maybe try undervolting to keep the temps down. stay away from overclocks. they are not stable due to this reason. i rather play smooth 30fps then 50fps with constant stutters and freezes. overclocking does not solve all issues, it usually introduces new performance issues due to bottlenecking

okay i will try, but why does the CPU even get this hot while emulating? even my calculator has more power than the good old PSX
Because it have to convert it to a higher resolution + the emulator might not be that good...

[Q] Do the newest games lag on your phone?

I noticed that newest games lag a bit on my gnex. For example, Death Dome is a great game and it doesnt lag in gameplay, but it is terrible in menu and while loading. It gets 2-3 seconds lag. Other game that lags in Vice city which should be a joke for gpu. Even on medium settings i get frame skips and 20 FPS. Dragon Slayer worked pretty well, actually. Got only few frame skips on it. and Most Wanted also works perfectly. Is it normal? I'm running Xylon rom with Purity kernel. Other roms dont work well with my phone

RipTide GP2

Hello!
I run this game, with my nexus (AOSP R11 w/ Franco kernel r384, 1,2Ghz CPU and 512Mhz GPU) with all settings maxed out (lens splash, boost, water reflection, hi-res textures...)everything, maxed out, and it gives me 10-20fps, reasonable for a dual core, 2007 GPU.
BUT, if i turn shader complexity to low (only has medium and low settings), it turns the game 30+fps (with 25fps spikes on jumps, because the water splashs the screen, but it's lovely and i won't turn it off, since it's nothing compared to the 30+ fps i always get).
That setting, that eats up my phone like a savage, seems to do NOTHING to the visuals, really, i've tried to find something it changes, but with little sucess.. the waves stay, splashs, everything!
I just want to ask the pro's, what the hell does that thing do? Shader complexity... despite the fact that eats frames.
I really love this phone, old as sh*t hardware, but still kicking some ass on top notch games
Love it so much!
Btw, great game too! Much better than the first riptide, now without tegra only crap

Don't worry bro
I also love this game !
I turned everything on and maxed out the settings and i'm on a solid 30-32 fps !
I'm on ASPK kernel right now and yeah what should i say great game !
And well to your question i don't really know, but maybe it's something about the details displayed.
Sorry if i'm wrong but it's just an idea
I just downloaded this game and I'm quite satisfied , it runs perfectly for me no lags or skips

On my Moto X Style, there a lot of dropped frames.. Even on a lower setting. Any idea what's wrong?

Samsung Tab Pro 8.4 - Overheating and rebooting during gaming??

OK, someone is willingly to sell me a Tab Pro 8.4 for a good price. Now everything works well, except for small fly in the ointment. He said while heavy gaming sometimes the tablet reboots. SO not sure if this is a software or hardware issue?
I have personally never had this problem, nor have I ever heard of other people getting this problem. The 8.4 can get pretty hot on the left side in the middle, where I assume the processor is located, though. Seems like a hardware problem specific to that tablet though, maybe a bad batch of CPU's.

Nor have I, seller says everything works just really heavy gaming that its rebooted at times.
Shouldn't reboot, the tablet has thermal monitoring and will down-clock the cpu if it gets too hot, it could be a software issue or a problem with knox as that is known to reboot the tablet...
maybe it was a return and someone installed a custom firmware then flashed it back to stock.
Though can't really rule out the possibility of a buggy game, some apps such as reicast will cause this tablet to reboot due to a kernel bug / snapdragon bug (on stock firmware).
I have tab 8.4 and it heats fast when I play some racing or 3D games (example Asphalt 8, NFS:MW,Roblox,Minecraft, etc) or even if I watch YouTube videos on 1080p60 or 4K for about 10mins. And when it overheats, performance is worse than not overheated(on YouTube, not a big effect). That thing is only when I play that game or watch that video. Can I somehow make it not overheat without losing performance?

if you are rooted you can downclock the cpu or limit the number of cores active at one time.
Turning the screen brightness down can help too.
I am NOT rooted, brightness is about 20%.
Poking around with the kernel, and experiencing this myself, the cores are pretty hefty and can generate some heat under full power. The GPU is not so hefty, so can generate heat when overworked (e.g., by playing games). It underclocks itself to protect against overheating, but of it gets to a certain temperature, it will restart to remove the load on the cores and stop the generation of heat. There is nothing adversely wrong with your device. That's supposed to happen. Trust me. I have had the Tab Pro for a while.

terrible performance with exynos is it just me?

having used the note 10+ for a day or so i can safely say that the performance is pretty bad, it feels sluggish and some demanding wallpaper apps actually lag
this app for example sometimes slow down to a crawl what feels like 5 fps https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maxelus.motionlivewallpaper
it's corrected by going to settings and changing from 60 fps to 50 fps but then it slows down again, i know this wallpaper is demanding but this is not acceptable on a 1100 smartphone
Well, I have had issues with various live wallpapers in the past, I dont know why, but live wallpapers do not work equally across devices, more to it, sometimes some lwp work fine for a while, then stop working at all, I went to playstore to check this lwp, and there others complaining about an update that made the lwp worst, I think the problem is not exynos related

I agree im dissapointed it feels very sluggish to the point i am considering to sell asap..
Thats why snapdragon is a better option
Isn't the exynos chip not better then snapdragon? I read somewhere that the Exynos chip is a tad more powerful then then snapdragon although barely noticeable
I have no issues with exynos.
Mine is fine.
Mines fine too, compared to my S10+ battery life is a good improvement, speed is similar
