Galaxy Note Desktop Cradle with HDMI output - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Accessories

Fellow Movie Lovers and Galaxy Note fans
Mugen announced a desktop cradle with HDMI output for "LET'S WATCH A MOVIE! ON TELLY" situation. I think it is a smart accessory for this phone, since Galaxy Note is a movie friendly device in general.

Comments? Expectations?
Release date is April 20, 2012

Will only be impressed if the screen turns off while it displays movie. Otherwise will stick to my cheap mhl adapter.

I would like to see an audio out on the device for older TV's/monitors that have DVI only. I don't want an audio cable sticking out the top.

are you serious? how can you control the movie when display is off? like swiping on the navigation or the movie itself to go back and forth. the cradle also charges the phone so having the screen stay on will not hurt.

Yeah it's a Galaxy Note, are you jealous?

Now why did they make it portrait? While the Note is sitting in the dock playing a movie, the movie on the Note will be sideways.

It is designed to be used either way, portrait or landscape - it sits very neatly on its side- perfect for landscape viewing as I do all the time.
It is a good dock given the limitations of the micro-usb connector. Given that, you have to put it in in portrait mode anyway, then turn it sideways.
I just have to wonder why they did not add pins so it can dock properly in landscape orientation. I am hoping somebody will come up with a back, or back plus battery combo that includes pins and a decent desk and car dock.

Yes I am serious. On my elocity tablet I use a widget called tegra display selector and guess what, it allows you to still use the screen. People also have things called Bluetooth keyboards and mice to control the screen while it is plugged in. I also hate having the glow from the screen of the note if I am trying to watch a movie in a dark room.

So did anyone get one of these? Does TV out work?

I have this good cable.

HD Dock for Atrix, any reviews?

Hello all.
Just wondering if anyone has this and wouldnt mind putting up their opionion on it. It looks cool and it's currently $79.99 with free shipping on amazon. I know theres the mod to make it work with just the HDMI out, but the added function with the USB ports, make it a little better and less of a "hack job.."
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Mult..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0HWYEBKJMAYFCF63E22S
I like to know this as well.
Hey guys,
I bought the same one from Amazon. It is just a dock with ports for connecting the USB, Power, and HDMI. The only thing I hate about it is getting the phone into the dock slot. You have to hold it just right to have the two ports on the phone aligning with the dock. The dock slot was not designed to help guide the phone into the connectors. Once you got it into the dock it’s fit great. The dock is usefully if you do not have a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse. I plug my wireless keyboard into the USB and it is good to go.
I did the WebTop mod and it is great to use when you are at friends house or traveling. The dock also allows you to access other options when it is dock.
WebTop
Entertainment Center
Clock Dock
I like the Clock Dock, since my phone is also my alarm clock.
Oh, if you got a case on your phone it will not fit into the HD dock. I own the Incipio case. It’s very thin but still doesn’t fit the dock.

Multimedia dock for Atrix
I bought the dock with remote for the Atrix (came with the IR remote).
I concur with the issue regarding aligning the unit to the usb and hdmi ports on the phone -- I spend a few seconds each time trying to get everything lined up (and hope I'm not scratching the phone in the process).
Other than that, the dock is very nice. I prefer using wired keyboards and USB mice rather than bluetooth -- it keeps the BT free for audio (listening to music).
I have my dock set up at work and connected to a KVM switch to connect my phone to the keyboard/mouse I use for the two computers at my desk. I don't switch video with the KVM switch, and I leave the phone in the "do nothing" mode most of the time so I can use the phone without the monitor.
The keyboard works great and I can use it to compose emails and SMS messages while it's on the dock.
My biggest disappointment is the operation of the mouse when it's on the dock and not in Webtop mode. The phone does not create a mouse cursor in the "do nothing" mode to allow you to use the mouse effectively, so you have to reach over and touch the screen to control the device. Using the mouse is pretty much useless as it jumps from icon to icon and you can't really predict where you are going when operating the mouse.
In webtop mode, you get a cursor, and operating the mouse is as you would exepect -- you can control the phone display mode with the cursor and it's as intuitive as using your finger. This is what should have been available when you're not in Webtop mode with a mouse.
If you hook up the monitor without a keyboard and mouse, the phone display turns into a laptop touchpad control. A keyboard icon is also available to switch to keyboard input as well. An external mouse and keyboard are highly recommended, however.
In short, the dock is awesome, and I plan on getting two more (without remotes); one for my desk at home and work (this one will be put on my home entertainment system so I can use the remote to control the device for music and videos.)

P.S.
I also am interested in what Motorola may be offering in terms of the "ruggedized case" mentioned in the manual for the dock. If you have an Otterbox or other protective case for your phone, you will likely will have to remove the device from the case in order to dock the unit.
The manual for the dock mentioned another insert you can place on the dock to accomodate the ruggedized case, but I can't find anything on Motorola's website for ordering either the insert or the case.
Just had my HD Dock yesterday.. Is there a way I can customize the webtop (desktop) other than change the wallpaper? Nothing special, it looks like it just blow up the 4" screen to 42" screen but the resolution is still the same. I was expecting somethin like opening multiple windows at the same time and multitask.
I had it connected to my 42" 1080p LED TV but looked like 50pixels all around the screen is gone! I can only see the minimize button on the upper right hand corner, restore can still be clicked if i drag my cursor all the way to the corner and click blindly, but the close button is totally gone. Is there an "fit to screen" option?
It great nonetheless..
powered ports on dock?
Usually, the fit to screen setting is on the tv itself. Check your remote for the aspect or zoom key, or in the settings somewhere.
But while I'm here, I had a question for you dock owners. Are the usb ports powered with 500ma? Has anyone tried connecting an external 2.5 hd to it?
Might want to check this out

You can remove the insert on the dock and the Incipio will fit. The only problem now is it is too loose. A thicker case like Speck or Bodyglove will probably fit better.

Desktop Dock Existence Question

Perhaps this is a thread better for Q&A, but I figure it is specifically about an accessory. As I've done searching through various gadget sites and Google I've yet to find an accessory for the SGSIII as below:
Coming from the Droid X, there existed a dock which when the DX was placed in it the phone would go into desktop dock mode. I forgot where I got mine. I think it was an ad on droid-life that I clicked through. I've seen that Samsung has a dock that charges the phone and is a multimedia dock, but it appears as if it holds the phone in portrait mode. Is there a dock that allows the phone to sit in a landscape position and have the screen show a clock, calender, etc.?
On another note, does anyone know if the SGSIII's dock is triggered via magnets as the DX was?

S3 does not trigger by magnets.
you have 2 options:
USB trigger, or NFC tag.
BUT samsung has a nice dock with multimedia out, and there are a couple aftermarket ones too... that i can't yet link to.
Hopefully they'll release a desktop dock with HDMI and USB OTG on it, in addition to a charger port. Would make a nice portable computer...
I wish I could put my DX into the "desktop dock" mode to snap a picture of it. It doesn't seem to want to cooperate with CM7 on it. Perhaps it was a Blur thing. I mainly wanted to have this big ass clock/calender/news ticker to sit on my desk. I sit on the corner of cube row so people probably would break their neck as they rounded the corner checking it out!

[Q] Smart Dock on Note 8.0?

I'm wondering if anyone has tried using the smart dock with the Note 8.0
Note II is really similar, so I would hope that the Note 8.0 will work
The Samsung site says Note II and Galaxy IV so now I'm a little iffy.
The MHL and OTG adapters are pretty universal, but I can only use one at a time
2 usb ports plus the HDMI would be great for me at the office since I can plug in the tab and have it running on my 2nd monitor (along with KB and mouse)
Has anyone tried yet?

Are you able to put the Note 8.0 into landscape when using the Smart Dock? Also, is the device stable enough to be written upon with S-pen while docked?
BTW, is there any other way to get USB- OTG and HDMI functionality simultaneously? (sans the Smart Dock)
I have the Smart Dock for my Note II and it works well. I haven't received my Int'l 3G Note 8.0 yet to test it, but it's good to hear that others have it working.
Since the Smart Dock holds both devices in Portrait orientation, it will not automatically put the display in Landscape mode unless you are playing a video. You would have to use a 3rd party app such as "Orientation Control".
I doubt you could write on the Note 8.0's screen successfully while in the dock. The dock is roughly 3" square and is not heavy enough to stabilize the tab for anything but very light screen taps or swipes. The device is not secured in the dock other than the by microUSB connector. The device just rests in the dock under its own weight, vertically.
The Smart Dock is not made to hold the device physically in a Landscape orientation. I'm not sure if a microUSB-to-microUSB extension cable would work to retain the functions and allow a separate landscape "holder" or case/cover to be used without the actual Smart Dock attached? Hmmm...
Oh, AFAIK, and I've researched fairly thoroughly, I couldn't find any other way to achieve HDMI, Audio, and USB OTG simultaneously. You might be able to use the Allcast Media Hub for wireless HDMI & Audio, and then connect a USB OTG adapter to the Note 8.0's microUSB/MHL port, but I haven't tested that.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, it was very helpful. I was thinking of getting the Smart Dock in lieu of the HDMI adapter. USB-OTG + HDMI at same time isn't much of a necessity for me. HDMI is still primary for me. Audio, when required could be used from the 3.5 mm jack.
Guess, it would be better to go for the HDMI adapter.
BTW, do you have any experience on HDMI to VGA converters?Do they work well? Actually I need to hook up the Note 8.0 to a VGA projector?
^No worries.
I don't have a ton of experience with HDMI-to-VGA adapters, but I would trust the people at the following link to steer you in the right direction...

Click on the "Adapters" tab, have a look, then shoot them an email. They're very helpful and knowledgeable.

VGA doesn't carry Audio signals, so you would most likely need a unit that would extract the audio from the HDMI as well as the Video signal, and then route the Audio to a separate connector/cable. I have seen some VGA cables that also have a 3.5mm Stereo audio plug at each end, so you can hook up the audio output from your PC's sound card and plug it into the 3.5mm audio Jack on most video projectors. You can find these at http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=180-285
Good luck.

Yes, I have seen some which can extract audio from the HDMI feed.
There are a number of listings on eBay in my country. I would love to get it from a reliable website, but most of them are overseas and the customs department in India makes it a lot of hassle.
I ordered a display adapter from dx.com once. No problems with website or the product, but it was held up for a month at the customs office and finally I had to pay a 50% duty as well.

I picked up a smart dock today and I am playing with it right now.
Some issues, having to repower up the dock for usb to work after tablet is inserted.
And I am not having any sound come out of the 3.5 jack on the back of the dock.
Also it I am using a HDMI to DVI adaptor for my moniter and I am using an orentation control app with it.
Wish it worked with my Galaxy s3.

Is your Note 8.0 battery level above 80% when you put it in the dock? If not, the tablet will draw too much power from the power adapter just to CHARGE the tablet, and the USB ports do not have sufficient power. If your tablet or phone battery is over 80%, this isn't a problem and you shouldn't have to "re-Dock" it to get the USB ports to work. Samsung should have made the power adapter more powerful (3 or 4 amps).
To get audio output from the 3.5mm rear Jack, you need to go into SETTINGS > ACCESSORY > AUDIO OUTPUT MODE, and Check the box for "Use External Speakers when device is Docked".

I thought I had answered your Portrait/Landscape question in paragraphs 3 & 4 of Post #4? Read through it again. The smart dock does not hold the tablet in a Landscape (horizontal) orientation at all. You could possibly use a case or cover on the Note 8.0 that would hold it in landscape, or use Samsung's Note 8.0 Car Mount and then connect the tablet to the Smart Dock with a 11-pin Male-to-Female micro-USB extension cable.
Hope this helps.

But the other member claimed to have already used it with the Note8, whereas you told me that you were still expecting your note 8, so I was keen to know more about the actual experience of a user.

Take a look at a picture of the smart dock, or look at nztechfreak's YouTube review of it. Just from its physical size and design there is no way that the Smart Dock can support or hold a tablet in a Landscape or horizontal position when on a desk/flat surface...or any surface.
For reference, I just tried my Note II in the Smart Dock with the phone and dock laying on its side. The dock will hold the Note II in landscape position, but the phone is at a perfect 90° angle to the table's surface, which makes it hard to use the touchscreen, and it will easily become undocked, as there is no pressure or weight to secure the device. And there is nothing directly behind the phone to keep it from moving or sliding back when you press the screen. Also, at least one USB port will be inaccessible because it or they will be against the table's surface when the dock is laying on its side. This dock was simply made to only hold a PHONE (either the Note II, SGS3, or SGS4) in a vertical Portrait position. It's obvious from the design that it was not made for landscape use whatsoever. It just happens to hold the Note II on its side because the dock is the same width as the phone.
I don't believe that Samsung will ever make a LANDSCAPE Desk dock for the Note 8.0. It is clear from its general design that Samsung intended this tablet to be used as a "Notepad" in a Portrait (vertical) orientation. The only odd exception is the position of the IR Blaster on the side (the SGS4 IR Blaster is on the top). I would definitely like a landscape desk dock as well, but I'm not convinced that it would be practical for this particular tablet. However, there is a car/windshield mount listed on Samsung's web site that looks like it will hold the tablet in landscape mode.
I'm searching for the extension cables now and will post here if & when I find them.
Thanks.
I never tried the S-Pen while in the dock. Also I tried the settings mentioned above to get the 3.5 sound to work, but no luck.
I took it back, I'll wait for a proper one to come out, or try with the wifi all share hub and build somthing that way.
Got one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/23108138465...769&_trkparms=ga1m=T1&ga2m=T0&ga3m=T1&ga4m=T2
If I hook up USB+charger and THEN the HDMI, it works. For some reason (lack of power???) it won't accept a flash drive if I plug a hub in and the flash drive into that. (I use a Bluetooth keyboard and a USB mouse.)
Haven't bit the bullet on the official smart dock yet though :'(.

It does not fit my official extended battery cover with Diztronic cover. Thickness is not an issue but the male USB plug is too short to reach the jack. You all can have fun with that statement.
Any more updates on this dock?
I'm looking for something that will charge and put my phone into dock mode. I have a blue tooth connected speaker that I can play music out too.
Ideally I would prefer if the doc was horizontal so that I could watch video on it as well, but I haven't seen much available like that.

I'm interested in some updates on this as well. However I'd assume from seeing the low rating on Amazon that this isn't that good.

[Q] Smart Dock MHL HDMI output Resolution

Hi,
I have a Note 8 on 4.1.2 with Samsung Smart Dock, There are a few questions i would like to ask if anyone has experience of this combination.
1: Screen output to TV, its seems its outputting 1280x800 therefore i get a little chopped off at the top and black bars down the sides in landscape, Nearly full screen but not quite. Videos will play full screen though, just games and android desktop/apps seem to have this chopping off effect. Is this normal ?
TV's i have tried are all 1080p and 720p and a 2560x1600 Dell monitor.
2: Anyway to make 4.2.2 work with Dock ? it only charges
3: Extension cable - I have purchased a 20cm 11pin female to male cable so i can sit the Note outside the dock in landscape. Nothing is recognised using this. I know there is an app to force rotation but i feel safer placing it in landscape with a Moko case.
Would i be right in assuming the Dock is 11pin connector ? and the note 8 11pin also ?.
4: Anyway of editing the default keyboard layout without rooting ? MelE F10Pro needs a few default keys changing.
Advanced apology if this should be posted in Accessories sub
Thanks in advance

I don't know about the Smart Dock, but I do have the MHL to HDMI adapter.
Your monitor or TV must have the ability to do a smart sync or have options to allow for vertical and horizontal size adjustment.
As for the wired HDMI, you will need to plug in the Samsung charger into the dock (it should have a USB connection), and use a good quality 6ft / 1.6m HDMI cable.
My Samsung TV has a hidden HDMI feature for PC input. You must use the HDMI source that has a PC DB15 input associated with it. In my case HDMI 3 input, and go into the menu for input label and change it to PC. Once that is done, you will have the ability to adjust the TV and should note that the image may have a blank unused area for a boarder (picture frame) around the image.
The maximum resolution is 1280x800 but the kicker is the app and the resolution of the tablet itself. All 1080i will be converted to 1280x800 maximum. I got tired of cabling, and ended up getting a mid priced HDMI dongle which allows miracast. They are both compatible for picture image. Just there is a distance and bandwidth limitation with wireless, so you must have a good signal and proper connection speeds to maintain high bandwidth to the dongle.
