Downloading Apk files ? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

My friend has been downloading files from 4shared is that illegal to do ? So he is pretty much getting free paid apps lol
xXHELLBoy91Xx

you are not allowed to post any free paid app information in this forum. I think even asking that kind of question is not accepted.

Exactly. This is a disallowed topic, really.
And yes, what he's doing is illegal, and frowned upon by most people here.
And not to mention risky. Great way to get your info stolen, get push msgs spam, generally f*ck your phone up.

Exactly him doing that isnt right at all smh i rather pay for apps then to download apk files and risk myself smh he is an idiot

How dare you ask any question in regards to what is and is not legal.
Seriously, when did questions become heresy?

It became "heresy" when it was made a rule to not discuss, link to, or suggest where someone might aquire, pirated applications.
Don't get yer panties in a bunch over it. The OP didn't.

He's not asking where he can do it, he's asking if it's illegal. A simple yes and a link to the specific rule set would be helpful instead of treating piracy as a taboo subject.
This isn't China or N. Korea; so I'm assuming, yes I know what happens when one assumes, that we can still have civil discourse over legal matters.

Interesting that you bring that particular point up, as I do believe it was your interjection of sarcasm that took this to an uncivil place.
Up until that point we had just been pointing out that the subject was inappropriate for XDA, in general, and had in no way been rude about it. And in fact the OP had agreed with us re: the choice to use pirated apps, and took the conversation is stride.
And then comes you. Huh.
And since you can't be bothered to follow your own "constructive criticism":
Rule # 6 states:
6. Do not post warez. If a piece of software requires you to pay to use it, either pay or find your cracks and serials somewhere else. We do not accept warez nor do we permit any member to promote or describe ways in which Warez, cracks, serial codes or other means of avoiding payment, can be obtained.

Depending on your country/network, you may find an original WM5 rom on Wiki... this problem have ocurred a few times already, so do some searching... there's other threads out there on the subject already
search first then ask
PLZ search first then ask. Several times members discuss this issue.

Thanks Shogunmark,
I really think it's time for an overhaul of this Forum.
This Forum should be representative of decent individuals who know how to behave.
Should the Moderators not start taking strict control of the postings on the various threads, XDA-Developers will loose credibility and become a circus.
Stupid questions must simply be removed and misbehavers banned.
I for one would not like to be associated with the kind of behaviour that certain senior members display.

Good. I agree. The n00bs should leave, and you with them. Go to HoFo or some other dumb site where everyone can have a great love-in and chat about all the different ways you can change your wallpaper, and how the Telco's charge you to change the wallpaper, because, well, it must be true because they sell it themselves online!
I'm not interested in group-think and silliness like this. The true thinkers understand the issue. All the little sheep on here that can't see past the drivel that's been force-fed to them by the state, the church, or whatever the hell nonsense you're believing, don't see it as an issue. They also don't see their actions as selfless. No, not selfless in the common sense. But in the sense that they have lost their sense of self. It's no longer decent for me to attack them, but it is decent for them to waste everyone's time by not searching themselves.
Everyone on here that is screaming that I and others like me are doing something wrong, while essentially condoning the actions of those who have no respect for anyone else, have got it wrong. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that you, the whining masses, telling me that I am doing something wrong, are the victims here. Victimized not by me or the noobs, but, by the very nature of society that says that it is better to be polite than to be honest. That it is far more valuable to be a sheep than a leader. Take a few seconds to think about what I'm writing, not merely to dismiss it. You'll see I'm right. You may disagree with the method, but, you can't disagree with the opinion.

Or you COULD do what I've begun doing. The forums have a neat feature called an "Ignore List". Mine currently has three individuals who have earned acceptance status, and yes, a couple of them are sadly regular contributors and senior members.
I also boycott their threads, and thus, I rarely see any of their posts. The only time it happens is when somebody Quotes their childish vitriol in his/her own posts.
Shogunmark has the best solution to the underlying problem, though. Simply DON'T ANSWER any ridiculous posts that show no-effort on the part of the poster. If you ignore something, it tends to go away. But any response (even a negative one) tends to be a positive reinforcer for the behavior you're trying to reduce.
At any rate, bringing the entire forum's professionalism down by showing how many four-letter words your can string into a sentence is not the solution. But as the members who practice this are limited in number and predictable, the Ignore Lists work a treat.

I agree. Definately. The third useless and irrelevant post made by a n00b on the same question should result in a ban.
Legolas,
You are right, the true thinkers do understand the issue. There are two issues though...the n00b questions and the pompous, intellectual snobs such as yourself who regularly ignore simple courtesies. If I wanted what is essentially verbal abuse, I'd go visit my in-laws.
I don't think anyone wants MORE n00b/repeated/irrelevent questions, but your delivery kills the message.
It's not better to be polite or honest but last time I checked, the two are not mutually exclusive.

Unintended side effects of 10 post rule

I understand what the 10-post rule is for - it's to prevent really dumb questions getting in the way of productive work, in addition to preventing spam, obviously. But it can be a big problem for some people.
XDA is pretty much the only forum out there regarding the jailbreak for Windows RT. I'm working on some stuff, including a newly improved jailbreak, but I have no way to talk about it in these forums due to the 10-post rule. I'm a competent programmer who has been reverse engineering for many of her programming years, but can't find anyone to talk to about it. It's clear that I can make some contribution to the RT jailbreak community, as small as it is.
As for trying to get to 10 posts, how can I do that? I have an iPhone, not an Android. I don't know anything at all about Android jailbreaking or flashing, nor would I have any questions to ask about it. The forums I can post to don't really talk about anything outside of Android devices.
By the way, I ported the open source Windows debug tool Process Hacker to Windows RT. Of course, the Process Hacker forum on SourceForge has forced moderation, and apparently their mods haven't been online in a week, so my posts from this weekend haven't showed up yet. Similar situation to here, I guess, except for a different cause.
As for why I'm posting this, well, this is post number 4 out of 10...
You could try pm'ing a senior mod stating and proving that you are a dev and they might lift that restriction off you. But i don't know how long they might take to process that.

A lot of us understand the issue you are posing here. I'm a Windows programmer, but I still had to follow the 10 post rule too. All of us did. There is a forum somewhere, lord knows there are plenty here, where you can post to help someone else out. I didn't know hardly anything about Android when I signed up here at XDA, but I did manage to contribute, and with out complaining about the rules. And now, a year later, I'm a Recognized Contributor. So, it's not that hard.
Rules are rules. Whether here, or out in the real world, they still stand.

I'm probably one of those guys that sometimes gives snarky responses. I really am trying to be nice and help the person find what they are looking for. That's 90% of the reason I post on here: I remember what it's like to not know much and to come to this community with very little knowledge.
That being said, I also hope people would follow the rules when posting, one of which is to search before starting a thread. I completely understand the complaints of people saying that there's too many threads on this site and it's difficult to find what you're looking for with search, but making a thread that's identical to an existing one is compounding the problem.
The way I try to help out with the problem is to take the time to write out a full response (not just give a link) and to (hopefully gently) point out that this topic has been covered and to look at the correct thread. I know Cnexus and I have been pretty good about this, although sometimes the deluge of MB1 update threads do make me a little short-tempered, and for that, I apologize.

But yes it is annoying when people ask / post same stuff that's been posted already 400 times before them again people should just be nice " hey man that question / concern / opinion has been posted already please search google and forums thank you "

I know that the user is traditionally at fault (the old IT adage of PBMAC - the Problem Between Monitor and Chair), but I also think it's partially the fault of the xda app on the phone. The search function on there is so woefully inept that I have only used it once or twice (and have never found what I was looking for). On the other hand, when creating a thread on the PC, the website even gives you a list of similar threads that might help you out. There are many times where I've been creating a thread and when I put in the title, a half dozen similar threads popped up with the exact answer I was looking for. I know coding this into the android app would be difficult (if not impossible), but it must be noted that almost all of the MB1 update threads had the "sent from the XDA app..." tag at the bottom. I still tell them to search before posting, but I honestly can't blame them because of the apps search function's shortcomings.
Hi
To respond to the first part about allowing abuse...we don't. But bear in mind we have 5 milllion users, 50000 new posts a day and moderators that are constantly moving questions from the wrong section, breaking up childish nerd fights, responding to reported posts, investigating kang issues, and trying to have a job, family and life. We are not reading every post that enters XDA. We respond to reports by users. And every mod action requires several minutes of "paperwork" to document what was done.
Now to the post about searching, yup app search stinks, however if you switch to browser view there are more search options available as well as googling and adding XDA in the search parameter. The phone is quite large so searching through browser view or just with google is a lot easier than in days past.

What's frustrating is all of these rule quoters that do nothing but add to the spam. Just answer the question then point them in the right direction or just ignore the post...
There is a saying you can led a horse to water but you can't force them to drink. But if can shoot the f*cker if he is too stubborn
I know sometimes when I was new to this forum (i am not a developer), I would get irritated when posting a question and you would see a lot of "views" but no replies/posts with any help. But you have to realize (as I did), as smart as these guys are, sometimes, nobody knows the answer to your question! So posting "crickets crickets" or something else snarky to that effect won't help you get an answer either. Most people are nice enough to help and will either post a link that you may have overlooked, or a real answer (or at least acknowledge your existence)...so in that case just be patient for an answer. Alot of the times when you google search, maybe you did not type in just the right terms and didn't get the link you were looking for.

Man I like this forum but don't at the same time.. I love the fact there's so much stuff on here that's so helpful to everyone but at the same time the people on here are 50/50 meaning about 50% you are nice and do realize a beginner has to start somewhere and learn as they go and are willing to help as much as possible you also realize you were once there yourselfs mean while there's the other 50% forget they where beginners and noobs at one point and still think that everyone shouldn't ask questions and automatically think you know the answer as well as give rude and smart butt answers or links... uncalled for is about the best way to describe those answers its amazing that the admin allow these people to give rude and uncalled for comments but when someone responds with a rude or smart butt comment that person either gets a warning or banned and the other person gets nothing kind of interesting to me .... everyone should be treated fairly and evenly .. but had to say something from a lot of posts I've been reading

as far as posting links example I was referring to about smart butt links is the google one I've notice is when you click on link takes you to google it automatically writes in the question the person would ask then at bottom it would say " now was that so hard " kinda funny but smart butt to I'm its a simple question that person could of easily just said hey man look please go read the forum rules and make sure you post in the right section simple and nicely said you know

So it bothers you that they held your hand instead of spoon feeding you the answer? Talk about first world problems... If they were really being anal about the rules then that link would take you to www.google.com and you'd be on your own for the search terms - be grateful that they held your hand as much as they did

If we just answer the question, we encourage further infractions... It would be kind of like banks taking a policy of giving money to anyone who threatens to rob the bank - we would have more robbers, not less...
Ignoring them almost inevitably leads to more noise from them, not less, so that won't fix their broken understanding of the rules...
But if we add to that spam now, there is a chance that someday, maybe it will end... It isn't likely, but I would rather have the rules on my side
I don't enable people to hide behind excuses - every search on the Internet isn't broken, they just require a little effort (almost as much effort as creating a new post, lol)

How about just showing people how well searching works and provide them proof of it's efficiency by linking them to your search results. This both; enlightens the user of search functionality, while also assisting them with their question.

[Q] Now that the root threads have been locked

Should we communicate new ideas and attempts via PMS or email? Did someone have an open thread elsewhere on xda? I check multiple times daily and have been attempting to learn and contribute. .since I am a noob I am typically quiet but I am down to test fur people if need be.
Dude dont even try it , leave it alone , to many emotional people in xda

This is a legitimate question for the q/a forum...if they choose to lock it that is their prerogative. I have never made any trouble on this site...there is little reason. This post is not meantt to be inflammatory, I just genuinely want to know if XDAS part in our quest for root is over or not...I am not breaking any forum rules in posting this.
So do people still plan to work on the note 4 using this forum or is there somewhere else I should be focusing my attention to?

Because of the nonsense that goes on in root threads, no developer in their right mind will post any efforts in one of the threads in General. This is why developers have taken their efforts off of XDA and in private chats...and now no one learns anything here.
And no, you are not breaking rules by asking but you opened a thread where all the non-helping people from the other threads will have a place to go. So I am sure they will be quite proud to post something here to get this locked too.
Now Root will never be achieved, sadly.

Yes. Because closing a thread full of people with nothing better to do than post "are we there yet" and then start flaming each other will totally stop all work on root. Smh....I guess you didn't even bother to read my post above.
Wasnt their a bunch of devs in that thread finding exploits ??? Guess they are pming

As Kenny stated here. This is the best course to take. We know most of you guys think we are being jerks, but the bottom line is that thread is/was and would continue to be out of hand. Just because that thread is locked for now, does not mean devs are going to stop collaborating and find a method.

Whoa, excuse me . I read your post and found no value in it. I merely made a statement (not even remotely regarding your profound post.) We paid a substantial amount of money for this phone. I also paid for the stupid XDA premium app to support the XDA community. I also have contributed much money to many devs in the past for previous phones I've owned. I believe I have a right to be kept in the know. Whether the know is what exploit developers are using to find root or useless banter from idiotic foreigners and newbs who have no idea what is going on is completely regardless. It's a public forum. The thread was posted in the general section. There was no warning in the title that it was a "Dev thread only." It wasn't just the idiots who were posting dumb comments, it was a lot of the ATT Note 4 Community that would post 4-5 replies after the "are we there yet?" posts that got the thread shut down. I enjoyed the thread, I learned a lot about exploits that I wouldn't have ever thought to research on my own. It was purely entertainment for me and it was taken away because the moderation can never handle anything properly.
Bridge is closed, troll. Go shake your head somewhere else. Nomsayin?

First off as Senior Moderator and Team Leader of this section, I AM NO TROLL! You certainly failed to comprehend my post and have some reading comprehension problems. YOUR post had absolutely no value and made no sense that a closed troll filled thread would stop you from getting root! Wow...just wow.
Now if you had read my post correctly I stated there IS an area for developers ONLY where people can see what is going on and not disturb the developers with useless posts like "Now we will never get root" or "Are we there yet". Try reading the original post a few times...then before you respond read it again. Feel free to take this to PM with me if you have any more criticisms of the avenues presented on this PRIVATE membership only development forum.
Cheers

Private?! OK buddy. I could have 4 accounts to this "private" forum in 5 mins. You guys give any moron a membership. You guys even made it easier for morons to join by making them watch a video rather than actually reading the rules before signing up. This is dumb. I have lost interest in all doings on this forum. Thanks for the boost of support from the Mod team. Did you have to watch a video before becoming a mod? Cheers.

Actually yes we do. And please read those rules you so reverently talked about. Having more than one account is a rule violation.

No need for mods and users to be fighting and disrespecting eachother. I will continue my pursuit in other threads this one is finished for me.

Perhaps, but it's illegal in many other countries and this is an international forum is it not? Personally, I think banning any such discussion is too heavy handed based on the fact that it is NOT illegal everywhere. But the mods/site owner has taken a different view.
So are you saying nobody can answer or the mods wont let anyone answer

Ok, question, is there "Freedom of Speech" in the country where the xdadevelopers servers are located?

What are you asking me for? It's got nothing to do with me. I just visit here, I don't make the rules
Maybe you should PM one of the mods, or raise this on another board or thread?
This is a common misconception, there is no "Freedom of Speech" outside of the government trying to restrict it. This forum is provided by a company who make rules about whatever is discussed here, this applies to all other social communities as well such as Facebook, Tumbler, Twitter, etc. They can make whatever rules they like, ban people for breaking them, delete posts that break the guidelines etc, and you have zero recourse other than leaving the group.
I'm fine with it like I said sorry for posting will no happen again was just looking for information did not mean to stir anything up will not ask about it again. I respect your decision. Thanks again

this is a bit of a pointless comment, freedom of speech is a lie people like to believe, as soon as you enter private premises (web sites fall under the same heading) you have to follow the "house rules" so you may have freedom of speech by local law but the rules of the establishment they can kick you out and ban you for saying the wrong thing. as the people who own/run these establishments are held acountable for what they allow in their establishment, so really freedom of speech is nothing more than an idea used to make people think they have the right to say what they want, if there truly was freedom of speech there would never need to be a language rating on TV and Movies as people would have the right to say what they want when they want. it's the same as you wouldn't be able to be prosecuted for things like racial abuse as freedom of speech would protect your right to voice your opinion on those groups.
funny part is there is info on doing this so google play will see your phone as a different phone so you can download more apps but we cant help someone out that wants to use his phone and not show what he is using. Great.. Who ever asked the main question just search for the info by looking on how to change your phones info to download stuff i dont know if that will work but i hope it does.

It's a completely different thing though.
Changing the phone "type" so that you can download different apps, is not contentious and doesn't have any sinister undertones. Changing the IMEI is what criminals will try to do with a stolen phone. Blocking the IMEI number on the network is the only way the network operators have to block stolen phones. That's why it's illegal in most territories, because it's synonymous with criminal activity. Yes there are non-criminal circumstances where a genuine user may wish to change the IMEI number for his phone, but they are usually out of luck. I'd like to own a hand gun here in the UK, but I am out of luck with that too!
Discussion of changing IMEI is prohibited on XDA.
Freedom of speech does not apply here as this is a private site operating under its own rules and guidelines.
