Power Shutter toggle in camera? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Anyone has any idea what this power shutter toggle does?
Initially i though it meant i could use my power button to take pictures, but nope.

That's exactly what it means.

Am i missing something?
Even with it enabled, when i press the power button, the screen just turns off.

I dont even have that setting in my camera options?.

Its ICS Camera+ that has this option I believe.

I have the ICS+ Camera (paid version) and that option is not there. I am also wondering what app is OP using.

This option is in the regular camera app in the rom that I am running. AOKP Milestone #4. ICS 4.0.3 last time I checked.
You first hit the settings button (the sliders button next to the zoom) then you hit the three little squares icon that is on the left. There you will find that setting.
That function works well on my phone. I set it to ON, and now my phones power button is the shutter button when my camera is open of course.
Thanks for letting me know about this feature =)

I just tried it and it works perfectly! Nice!!

Yeap, i am using AOKP m4
Doesn't work for me though.
tried it on stock kernel and franco's m1 but it still isn't working. it just switches of the screen.
Edit: you'll have to close the camera app and run it again and it'll work fine =)

Turn it on reboot your phone and then it should work.

I found you need to hold the power button down for a few seconds, then it takes the picture. Simply pressing it quickly does indeed turn the screen off. It would have made a lot more sense to use one of the volume buttons.

It doesn't turn the screen off for me. It works fine. I can press it quickly, or hold it down and release. Both snap the pic normally for me.

Yep I agree with the poster above. I can also do it as quick as possible, or hold down for 5+ seconds and let go, and both times it will take the pic normally (focused and everything).

Any method? Power button also great... Just tired to use soft button.
Most custom roms have this option if you go into camera, then go to settings, then Camera Settings (more), then Power Shutter toggled on On. I have attached my Camera.apk that has this option, but you have to push it to /system/app

Thx dude yeah I can use it
But I found that it is inconvenience to use power button since it will make the phone sleep or even off
So the question is here how can I use volume buttons to capture photos with stock rom?
What do you mean using the power button will make the phone sleep? The camera app disables the power button as a 'lock button' when in 'power shutter' mode. When you press the camera button, it just takes a picture and doesn't do anything else. If you want to lock the phone, just press home then power. It's just one more button press.

MOD --> disable home wakeup

Hello,
For the S3.
the home button & the volumes button are disabled with this zip.
Just the power button will wake up your phone. Battery saver
Flash it with CWM.

How is this a battery saving mod? Does the home-button wakeup feature actually consume some battery?

Me too! Very useful when out at concerts etc. I found that the constant movement would cause the power button to be hit, then screen would stay on for a minute with contact through thin trousers/shorts.
Eventually I found phone was quite warm and battery was slightly reduced.
And I have no idea what the volume wake does, but I have left it enabled.
How about wake up with volume keys

Basically, the file gpio-keys.kl contains four lines corresponding to both volume keys, power button and the home button.
The zip I posted removes the WAKE from just the power button. So the volume keys behave in the same way they would without the modification.
The zip the op posted removes the WAKE from the volume keys and the home button, but not the power button. (so the volume keys will no longer wake the device).
I don't know what this difference means, I assume it may have something to do with volume changing when listening to music? But I have no idea.
Does this clear it up?
But the volume keys dont wake up the phone by default right?

Nope, not as far as I have ever seen.
But they were set to WAKE, so I left them that way.
Is there a flashable file that can enable that?
Thanks1

the button doesn't, but the screen coming on does. Disabling the button is handy, when phones in pocket, and button keeps pressing.

Enable wake on volume key press? I honestly don't know how, according to the file that I modified they already do - but we know that they don't actually visibly affect the device.

I think acccidently pressing the power button is much easier than accidently pressing the home button, so arguably, you would save more power disabling the power button, and not the home button?
ThankĀ“s for this, love it.
i have a case on my s3 so pressing the power button is eliminated accidentally, however the home button i seem to press accidentally every time i pull it out of my pocket or even just shuffling it around.
Hey,can't test it because i have cm9!
Looking good though...
Could you make a zip for cm9 too?

This *should* work for you no issues, with the revert working aswell. Of course, nandroid first...

Tried with your Power button disabled mod.. Doesn't work.. After flashing, it still wakes up my phone.
I am on Stock firmware with Siyah Kernel.. Any suggestions. Thanks.

The vol up and vol down buttons can be pressed at the same time, right? Then why..

I remember when I was following guides here at XDA after I bought the Galaxy Nexus back in February, one step said "press both vol up and down buttons, then power on". you know to enter recovery mode and stuff. I remember thinking "wow, I can't wait to see what custom ROMs are gonna do with that" but I never saw it.
If the the vol up and vol down can be physically pressed at the same time, why can it be used to trigger/toggle something when the OS is running? Isn't possible?
Imagine something like opening up the camera, or muting the device without touching the screen, anything.
Hmm. I just tried it running CodeNameAndroid 10/6 nightly and it seems to toggle between full volume and silent mode.
CM introduced the dual press to toggle silent mode a few months ago, although I'm not sure if it's been merged into CM10 yet.
You raise a very good question.
My current ROM, XenonHD, doesn't make use of both buttons at the same time.
However, I could imagine it being used to launch apps, toggle airplane mode (or others), or maybe even be used as a camera button.
Someone should capitalize on this

Now this is embarrassing. I use the stable CNA 3.5 ROM myself, I just tried it and it toggles between silent and ringer! haha! nice!
Are there mods or an app to control the action? I'd love it if it could launch the camera.

How are you actually meant to turn this off?

Did anyone at HTC actually use this device? The power button is an absolute joke. 50% of the time I wind up messing with the volume on my way to turn the phone off and put it back in my pocket.
How do you guys sleep this thing? The nexus 5 buttons are so much better.

1.swipe2sleep
2.notification double tap on viper rom
3. OR u can just customize a button on ur NAV bar to turn off the phone

First I have a nexus5 also and there is no comparison on the buttons. They rattle when you shake it. Anyways maybe you have a bad device. I just set mine to hold home to turn screen off so I never even have to hit the button but my button works fine if I need it.

Indeed. I'm contemplating a return and sticking with either my moto x or nexus 5 so k won't be rooting it at the moment.
Its bizarre that they added motion gestures basically acknowledging the button isn't great, is there no off gesture?

I will look into this. Seems odd HTC has an "on" method (acknowledging they need one in addition to the sleep button) but not an off button.

Except sometimes, I long press the power button, then I get a short vibration & several options regarding resetting or powering down my phone. Thanks for confirming the presence of the other features tho! I am glad to see that the power button functions to start the device, as well as turn the display on & off. I am certainly happy to discover that the power buttons function didn't change just because HTC located it somewhere other than where LG located it!
Seriously, I also have a N5 (with ZERO button issues, rock solid), but I much prefer the HTC button placement. No accidentally turning the device off while just trying to adjust the volume with only a left hand available at the time.

Yeah, I actually prefer the button being in the top. I never really liked the power button on the side.
My hands aren't big either, if anything they're smaller than an average guy.
It just takes a small shift to turn it off with one hand, just being careful you don't press the volume buttons. Which became easy after a couple days of use for me.

ElementalX double tap issue

Just a quick Q, does elemental work flawlessly for those who use dt2w? I've found if I leave my tablet for a while without using it and then come back to it (Like an hour or 2), double tap just does nothing. Just wondering if this is a known issue? Sorry, I'm new to the n7, but have had the n5 for a long time now so very familiar.
Doing a little research..
Before locking your tablet, I think you have to back out of all apps first to your homescreen, then lock it. Can anyone confirm this?
I've not had any issue with it. I have been running Elemental X on Clean ROM v2.7 for a week and it has worked as advertised.
Make sure you turn it off in correct way, since it can be disabled.

Thats' the problem. Pressing the power button cycles through the swipe/tap to turn on function. I never use the power button to turn it off, i just swipe across the bottom of the screen, or close the magnetic front cover to my case to shut the screen down

That setting is found when you flash the kernel. If you want to change the behavior of the tap to wake etc, you will need to reflash Elemental X
