[MOD] How to enable built-in wifi tethering - LG Nitro HD

Things you will need:
1) rooted phone
2) root explorer app (paid)
3) sqlite editor (paid - root explorer will direct you to it)
*** Now that cm9 is available I wanted to update this posting to let you know that these instructions are for stock gingerbread as well as the custom gingerbread roms. Cm9 has this option natively and you won't need to do this on cm9. Just want to save anyone from having problems with cm9. Now if your on gingerbread, go for it. ***
Now go to this directory with root explorer:
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
(You will have an option to open it with the internal viewer or SQLite editor, choose SQLite editor)
Select secure
Now locate tether_entitlement_check_state and change the value to 0 then save and reboot.
Now you can use the built in tethering without the pop-up saying that you don't have a tethering plan.
I hope this helps you guys out.
Disclaimer: As chrisd1a1 pointed out doing this is at your own risk as far as breaking your terms of service with at&t. I do not know if at&t can detect this or what the result will be if they do. I'm just throwing this out there as another option.
Sent from my LG-P930 using XDA App

Yeah, it's working and working great!
Big fat thanks, dude!

Yeah it does work great. But I'm not sure if at&t can see it being used. I've used it on and off for about a month and had no problems with them. Glad it worked for you!

This is exactly why I'm using the ClockWorkMod app. I've already been kicked off my unlimited data plan once for "unauthorized tethering" and it was hell getting back on the plan. The loophole to do so is no longer available, so I really don't want to get kicked again.
I'll have to wait and see how it works out for others. But good job on showing us the way to enable it. Thumbs up!

If I'm not mistaken, the tether_entitlement_check_state will not be available in the database until first attempt enabling tethering.

interesting thread. moved to DEV as this could be handy for future development.
the only disclaimer I'll put in is that it's at your own risk if you break any terms of service from your carrier....
regards
Chris

This is good, thanks! but I've been using pdanet along with foxfi from the market and these apps work too

Excellent
Thx.

I've done this with my phone I only use the tethering maybe once a month and only for a short time. I do not know the effects of this with at&t but I figured I'd throw it out there as another option. Also I'm updating the op to state that.

I can't think of any reason why they wouldn't be able to detect it. It works the same way as it does on any other Android device.

this method has been DISABLED by ATT in the latest leaked ICS.

[Q] T-mobile wifi hotspot bypass??

Just got my Galaxy S3 today and upgraded from mytouch 4g, im on t-mobile's 4g prepaid plan with unlimted everything (5gig 4g data). on my mytouch i didnt need to pay for tethering service but now im trying to connect my itouch to my wifi hotspot on the s3 and it doesnt work.....would anyone happen to know a workaround or fix for this??
p.s. im not paying tmobile for tethering service
Thanks all
Its working for me. I thought the 5GB plan included the T-Mobile HotSpot app, the guy at the store this morning offered me a 2GB plan for $20 or a $35 5GB plan with tethering.
Thinking you probably need root.

I do have the app it's just that when I turn it on and connect with another device it redirects to a page that tells me I need to add the service from T-Mobile...I have been skeptical about rooting as I've never done it before, can anyone confirm that this will solve my problem??

This worked for me. I had downloaded the wifi tether w/ root, but I couldn't get it to work off the bat. The missing thing was changing the profile to "generic ics-profile". Using a stock rooted Tmobile SGS3 T999.

You have to change your user agent on the PC side. I reccomend Firefox with the add on called "user agent switcher". No matter what don't use internet explorer, immediate giveaway.
Here's my current one as an example:
Mozilla/5.0 Linux U Android 4.0.4 en-us Galaxy Nexus Build/IMM76I CyanogenMod-9 AppleWebKit/534.30 KHTML, like Gecko Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/534.30
Here an example of what will get ur ass redirected to the tmo up sell page:
IE 7 ? Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.30)2011-10-16 20:20:09
Hope this helps

If all else fails you could also use PdaNet and use the "hide tether usage" option.
Try using Firefox. Works for me even when Chrome redirects.

Best tethering app

What app Oscar anyone using on their rooted Samsung s iii?

WiFi Tether from the market works best for me!
I am seeing a lot of negative comments about this app 'wifi tether' and gs III stock. It seems to indicate that it does not play well together. This is why I was asking, because this was my experience today: No consistent connection, it simply drops the tether and the app stops.
Sent from my AT100 using Tapatalk 2
Better get used to it if ur stayin stock. All that works unless u have the means to Bluetooth tether. If u can do it with Bluetooth try foxfi. Normal tether doesn't work with it yet. Also if u haven't done so, in addition to setting gnex profile in the tether app and unchecking the disable wake lock option, delete ConnectionManager.apk from /system/app. Probably the cause of your tethering woes
Thanks for confirming

WiFi Tether works for me just fine (gotta select the GNexus CDMA/LTE profile).
The only hiccup I've found is that before I activate tethering, I often need to do a fresh reboot on the GSIII, or else it will claim its broadcasting, but it really isn't.
And, of course, root IS required for this particular app.

I don't know enough about the rules on posting links so................
I did a google search for "wifi tether versions"
Down toward the bottom of the results I came across a page from the androidpolice site.
Right above the row of three screen shots is the following sentence: (If it does get pulled, however, you can always grab the apk from Here).
Click on the word "Here" and it will take you to the android-wifi-tether project home page.
Click on downloads and that will get you to where you want to be.
I am running Jelly Bean on my GS3 and have yet to be able to get wifi tether or foxfi to work at all.
I am about to start at the oldest version of wifi tether and work my way forward until I find something that works.
Until I find something stable, I will be using pdanet for wired tether. Hey, it works all day long for me.
On EDIT.............
Ignore most of the above and just google "android wifi tether project"
It will cut out most of the steps and is the first result on google.
Dang, I've been here almost two years and still considered a new member?
Had to wait 5 minutes before I could edit the post with better info.
Trust me, I'm a real person........not a spam bot!
Sure it has something to do with post count.
Any luck with older versions of wifi tether?

Not yet.
Work got real busy right after I made the post and I wasn't able to go through the apk's.
I have to go over to another house and do a few hours worth of work before I can really get in and mess with these.
It may be late this evening (for me) but I am still going to try and run through them.
Sorry about the delay.
I wasn't able to do anything with this until this morning.
I was unable to get any of the versions to work with JB.

Could possibly be that I am simply missing something.

WIFI TETHER on JELLY BEAN (FAKE)

So the title says it all!
This is aimed at us GS3 owners who are fortunate enough to be running Jelly Bean thanks to Freeza...Well one of the down sides of the LJ7 JB update is that WiFi Tether no longer works for us! What a shame!!
Well I may just have a solution that will make you and your phone very very happy.
Follow the steps below:
1) Download WiFi Tether app from Play Store
2) Open app, and hit Menu, then tap Settings
3) There should be an option in Settings to configure your device with the app, in that option change Galaxy SIII to Galaxy Nexus! This worked for me and I am now enjoying the pro's of LJ7 JB while tethering like a boss! haha
If this worked, please hit that thanks button, it helps me greatly

I am trying this but I can not make it work. The app says that it is working but nothing can see the SSID or connect.

I'm just going to assume this method does not work. Sprint blocked the tethering in purpose, it doesn't work on jelly bean for the moment, unless you can show proof?

So this whole wifi tether issue. It seems fixable at some point and time. I had the hotspot working for like 2 days but never paid anything extra for it. It no longer works so I guess sprint is paying attention to something. LOL. I love the Jellybean though.

Does anybody know if it's possible to do USB tethering on Jelly Bean?
USB tethering works fine for me, using the 'easytether lite' app. Let's hope the wifi team solves the JB issue soon.

Are you getting "error" or you can start tethering but no data is transfered from your device ?
My post solves the "error" problem as described here

100% stock rooted, debloated.
Im trying to get the native tether with security check bypassed.. i found the code but of course when i debloated i dont have the files, so i got to wait 3 hours to dl the rom with the file ..ugh useing th previous rom files i can get it to launch and run, and show up but going into settings crashes settings
I'm stock rooted except running ObOne kernel. Didn't think the kernel was the problem but didn't run tether on 4.3 before flashing the new kernel. When I ran into the tether problems I wasn't debloated but since then I've dumped some stuff.
Based on the error messages it seems as if the app can't write to the directory but have no clue why. Tried OpenGarden and it had the same errors.

I decided to check out the sprint forums for the one, and the exact same thing happened to them when they got 4.3 . It seems it was hit or miss with the tether apps. and it seemed that a reasonable fix was to use native tether with security bypassed. The person who modded the one tether app that we are having problems with seems to be MIA
Workaround
All,
I believe i found a viable workaround

ROOT Looking for wifi hotspot app for root

I had a galaxy s3 a while ago also rooted where i had used pdanet+ to create a hotspot without paying an arm and a leg to my carrier for the option. It had worked. Now that i have the g4 i want to do the same. when i try to use any app that says root wifi hotspot or whatever, they dont actually ask for root access nor do they work as intended. I was wondering if there was any other apps out there (for free this is the point) that i could use... Or if theres a method im neglecting to use to get this working.

Which did you use? I found one from 2013 on google code, but it's not working correctly and throws a lot of errors.

It depends on what device ure using. Fool around with the settings, there's lots of options.

I have a unrooted H815 on Cricket and I can confirm that the wifi hotspot on the phone works, accessible via the toggle switch in Settings. No use for it, but good to know it's there.

This worked for me as well. The LTE connection will reset/refresh, and it instantly started working. I am running rooted stock 5.1 (ZV5) on Sprint.
